Noisy pipe signals a problem Q. We had a house built several years ago and have had a nagging problem with the noise caused when we turn on or off the water. In the master bathroom and the outdoor faucet when we turn it on or off there is a loud bang that comes from the plumbing piping. Lately I have noticed it when the washing machine SQUARE turns on. What is CORNERS causing this? Can it be stopped? Is Jeff Deahl it harmful to the plumbing system? —Dewayne of Orland A. What you are describing is sometimes called water hammer. This is a pressure surge when the water is stopped or changes direction in the piping. It typically occurs when the fast moving water is turned on or off and the flow is suddenly changed or stopped. It is kind of a shock wave in you plumbing pipes. This can cause the pipes to move if they are not secured by straps or ties and cause a bang noise. No, it is not good for the plumbing system and as your piping begins to age it can cause joints to break or become loose causing problems. Appliances often cause hammering because they contain valves that open and close quickly. Properly installed plumbing should contain air chambers that are like a shock absorber in your water system. Typically they are installed above shut off valves and at the end of plumbing runs. Normally noise occurs in copper piping more often than with Pex or plastic piping but the effect is the same; you just won’t notice it until there is a problem. If the plumbing system used to not make noise but now has started those air cushions can get filled with water and won’t work. In this case, turn your water supply off at the entrance to the house. Open all the faucets and water lines to allow the water system to drain down. Then turn off the faucets and turn back on the main water supply. This should solve the

problem by allowing air back into the system. Q. We have been planning on doing some remodeling in our basement. Currently the space is semi finished with drywall on walls and drop ceiling creating a nice recreation room for the kids. Now the kids are teenagers and beginning to have their friends over. We want to put a full bathroom in down there and we are wondering how to do the in floor plumbing. Can we do this without cutting and breaking the concrete floor in the basement? — Tim of Rome City A. Well, there are some basic things to consider. First, where does the current waste water go out of the house? In houses that are on city sewers or in older neighborhoods, the waste pipe goes into the floor. In a lot of houses on septic systems that have a walk out basement, the waste line will go out through the floor. In most other cases the waste water would want to get lifted to the location where the waste line goes out of the house. This is done with a grinder and sewage ejector pit. Now, the waste water of your bathroom needs to get into that tank. It can either gravity feed into that tank through the floor just like the shower/ tub and just like the vanity sink would need to drain. The vanity drain can commonly run in the wall with slope to a waste line; the shower/tub are tougher because they go out the floor. You can build a platform for it to set on but that is always oddball; they make shower units with bases that elevate the unit to allow drainage to a wall. There are also small ejector tanks that will integrate with rear outlet toilets into wall cavities where the tank is mounted. They contain a small grinder and pump into an ejector pit or directly into a pressurized sewer line. Where there’s a will there’s a way to solve basement bathroom construction and the floor drain is not your only option. Q. Jeff, a few months ago, my wife and I discovered low water pressure at the kitchen sink on the hot water
side of the faucet. We could hear the running of water. We turned off the main house water valve and the sound went away; then we turned back on each individual faucet in the house and finally again the kitchen sink where we found the noise is coming from. Is there any way to know for sure and how do we fix it? Laurie in Kendallville A. How can this be? Under slab plumbing piping is supposed to last as long as the house and never have a problem, right? No, several times in my 30-plus years of working on houses we have found a failure with the under slab plumbing lines. Typically they are copper water lines because this is a common construction practice for slab style foundations and there were hundreds of thousands of houses built this way across the country. As the copper water line deteriorates, the wall of the pipe becomes thin and can easily cause a leak. I bet many leaks of this type go unnoticed for years especially if they are small. Another problem is that during this construction era welded wire mesh was commonly used to help strengthen the concrete floor slab. If the copper pipe is at all in contact with the steel wire mesh this will quickly deteriorate the wall of a copper pipe. If it is a hot water line I have been able to detect the location by the concrete slab being warm in that area. Once the leak is located, the slab can be broken up in that area and the gravel fill removed. When the copper line is exposed, the leaking pipe can be fixed. Several years ago we had a leak that we just couldn’t find. We ran a new water line through the wall around to the sink location and abandoned the under slab water line.
