Exterior concrete can be resurfaced Q. I have a 20 year-old home and have managed to keep things well maintained on the outside. One problem I have is that the finish has come off the surface of my outside concrete. The driveway and sidewalk have pits deterioration of the surface. Is there a way I can fix this up? Mike from Kendallville A. We have talked about good installation being critical to long term performance on anything regarding your home that you want to last 20 or 30 years. Roofs, concrete, masonry and framing things should last that long but that is way out of standard warranties. Of course, you can jack hammer all the outside concrete up and after proper preparation and forming pour new walks and driveways. If that is more than you were planning, yes, you can resurface your exterior concrete. Does it look
the same as new concrete? No, not if you look close enough. But, yes, you can resurface and get excellent results and most would not know the difference. After the development of latex or polymer modified Portland SQUARE cement resurface CORNERS materials you can Jeff Deahl now mix and apply a coating that will restore your exterior concrete. First off it has to be concrete that is structurally sound and will not continue to crumble. Waterproof gloves and eye protection is a must for this process. You will have to thoroughly clean the concrete surface with power washer and scrub

with mild acid wash to make sure the surface is clean and free of any oil or dirt. Then you’ll wet down the surface especially if it’s warmer weather and apply a primer. Now you can tape off sections and apply restoration cement material by toweling or squeegee across existing concrete. If your cracks and voids are large, filling those before the finish coat is recommended. This resurfacing is typically done be a professional for optimum performance; the skilled guys can add colors and all kinds of tricks such as texturing for stone type patterns along with imitation brick or paver look. Beach Pokagon offers two beaches that are open for sunning or swimming. The bathhouse and beach are open Memorial Day through Labor Day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bike Rental Bikes are available at the Saddle Barn to rent 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $4 per hour or $12 per day. Boat Rental Row boats and canoes are available to rent for $5 per hour or $23 per day plus tax. Paddle boats are $8 per hour plus tax. Pontoons are $250 a day plus tax and $250 deposit. Toboggan Visitors who enjoy fast rides will be excited to learn about the 1,700-foot, double-lane refrigerated toboggan run awaiting them at Pokagon. Slide hours are Friday 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday and holidays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The slide opens on the Friday following Thanksgiving. During Christmas break, the slide is open during the week with extended hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (except Sundays and holidays.) The open days vary by school holidays. Call the park office for dates. Sleds are $10 per hour, per sled, and hold up to four people. A valid driver’s license is required as a deposit to rent a sled. You must use a park sled.
HISTORICAL SITES • The Cline Memorial Museum, 313 E. Maumee St., Angola, presents treasures from the 1900s to the 1920s. It is operated by the Steuben County Historical
• Powers Church, located on Old S.R. 1 about a quarter mile north of U.S. 20, east of Angola. The church was founded in 1876 as a Free Church and has been fully restored. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and services are held there each summer. Call 6655498 for details.
PLANETARIUM • Prairie Heights High School has a planetarium in its facility and presents several public programs during the school year. Dates for the programs may be obtained by contacting the school at (800) 800-9596.
BUFFALO PRESERVE • Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve, 6975 N. Ray Road, Fremont, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment.
