Finding beauty in subtlety THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Paint your walls a bold color and friends will likely praise your creativity. Invest in a standout piece of furniture or striking work of art and your decorating is bound to earn compliments. But creating a noteworthy room with subtle, understated elegance is a bit more complicated. Understated style “rides the fine line between too sparse and too cold,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn, creator of the FlynnsideOut design blog. “A lack of objects makes a room feel unfinished, and a lack of color can also read of lifeless.” But finding the right, subtle balance can be worth it. Although bold decorating has been in the spotlight for a while, a more neutral room, if well-designed, “will never become tired,” Flynn says. “Every once in a while, it’s nice to have a space that’s just simple and clean,” he says. How do you design a room that’s low-key and beautiful, not bland and boring?

Soften every surface Without warm, vibrant colors, you can create warmth in understated rooms by filling them with soft, elegant materials that look and feel appealing. “Think of a camel cashmere sweater,” says designer Betsy Burnham of Burnham Design in Los Angeles. “It’s the simplest thing in the world,” but it’s timelessly beautiful and feels great. Materials like cashmere, silk and “breathable fabrics such as linen or cotton blends” bring a sense of warmth and comfort, Flynn agrees. He also recommends wood surfaces softened by white-washing, smooth stone surfaces, and “broadloom carpet that adds texture and softness underfoot.” Use natural and artificial lighting for a soft glow. Sheer curtains can maximize daylight, while “in the evening, it’s about lamps,” says New York-based designer Jon Call of Mr. Call Designs. Place lamps to evenly spread light throughout the space, eliminating bright spots and dark shadows. Flynn also recommends dimmers to control light precisely.

To create this understated living room, interior designer Burnham, of Burnham Design in Los Angeles, balanced a subtle palette of neutral colors with a mix of rich textures and unique shapes. The effect is powerful, but the room has a soothing elegance.

to create interest, Call says. One strategy is using objects with interesting or intricate shapes that draw attention to workmanship and creativity. Burnham recently designed a bedroom with a large bed that featured beautiful wood carving, bringing some excitement to an otherwise subtle room. Flynn seeks out furniture with “interesting detail, such as fretwork or inlaid paneling.”

Contrast and layer Monochrome doesn’t mean only one shade; mix a variety of tans, beiges and creams into a neutral room. “I usually add several shades and tints of the same neutral tone throughout the space to give it depth,” Flynn says. Also use a variety of contrasting textures. Silk will maximize light, Call says, while materials like linen and cashmere absorb it. So use them together: Pair a linen sofa with silk pillows, for example, or a seagrass rug with a silk-covered chair. “Think of what materials and shapes are missing, and then keep adding until they fit together like a puzzle,” says Flynn. “The key to a well-balanced room

is a mix of natural materials.”

Eliminate what’s not special In a subtle but striking room, “everything you do use should mean something,” Burnham says. “Either it’s an interesting shape, or the finish is unusual or the fabric is so fine and special.” There are fewer items, but better ones. Your coffee table may be a neutral color and simple material, she says, but “maybe it’s a vintage coffee table that has this amazing provenance or patina.” Eliminate items that don’t contribute much. If letting go of them is difficult, Burnham suggests this exercise: “For everything you bring in, you take two things away.” Flynn agrees: “Editing plays a huge role in understated rooms,” he says. “In a dining room I did in Atlanta, I used all dove gray tones in the room, and every single element had highly sculptural qualities that made the play on shapes and texture the prominent story.”

Insecticides or hand picking can help get rid of Japanese beetles Japanese beetles are one of the most aggressively damaging insect pests of landscape plants and turf grass. Japanese beetle(Popillia japonica) larvae are a type of white grub that feeds on the roots of grass and the adult Japanese beetles eat the leaves and flowers on more than 300 plant species. The adults are about 3/8” in length and have metallic green KNOWLEDGE heads and metallic copper- tan backs. The TO GROW larvae are a “c” shaped white grub. The Japanese beetle Karen Weiland has a one year life cycle. After emerging as adults, they basically feed, mate and lay eggs. In late afternoon, the mated females will seek suitably moist turf grass soil in which to lay her cluster of eggs among the plant roots. A female can lay 40-60 eggs during her 4 to 8 week life span. After the larvae have hatched, they start feeding on turf grass roots. In the fall after the soil temperature drops to about 60 degrees F the larvae move deeper into

•

the soil where they remain throughout the winter. As the soil warms in the spring the larvae become active again to form an earthen cell and pupate. A few weeks later they emerge as adults. Just because you have a large amount of adults feeding on your plants does not mean you have a grub infestation in your grass. Adults will fly a long way to find food. But if you do find patches of dead grass in your yard that can be rolled back like a carpet, chances are you have a grub issue. Grubs will chew off the roots of the grass therefore causing the grass to be unable to take up water during the hot, dry weather of summer. Starlings, crows, moles, shrews and skunks damaging the lawn may be another indication you have a grub issue. The adults emerge from the soil in July and their activity is at its peak for a 6 to 8 week time period. The timing of pesticide application is important in the control of Japanese Beetle grubs. Because of their egg-laying, the best time to apply grub control insecticide is mid-July through early September using a granular insecticide applied with a spreader. Always be sure to read and follow thoroughly, all directions on the product label. There are numerous insecticides available to either kill and/or repel Japanese beetles. Pyrethroid insecticides offer a 2 to 3

week protection after a single application. Carbaryle (Sevin) is another good choice but its effectiveness will not last as long as the pyrethroid. These are just a few of the choices available. When making your choice, read all label warnings and cautions. Some products are highly toxic to bees and other pollinating insects and plants grown for food. Keep in mind, no pollinators=no food! Another effective but time consuming control method is to simply pick the Japanese beetle from the plant in the early morning and drop it into a container of soapy water. This would not exactly be my idea of how I would like to spend my morning, but it does work. Japanese beetle traps are not recommended as they tend to increase the damage done by the beetles by drawing them into an area in larger numbers than can be trapped. The exterior of the structure is covered with the curtain wall and normally is attached to the roof, floor structures and the foundation. Yes, the use of products that are designed for commercial applications can add incredible features to a residential application. A residential home with a true curtain wall can have an impressive view to the exterior primarily with tempered glass that goes floor to ceiling with minimal size dividers as small as 2 inchesº. The glass should be high efficiency and special attention needs to be paid to thermal and weather tight capabilities of the wall. This application should be

designed by a trained architect or engineer for loads need to be transferred to structural walls and floors. Residential applications often include operable windows with screens and interior blinds or sun shading. The framework of the curtain walls today has thermal breaks to add to its thermal efficiency and reduce interior sweating. Be careful these curtain walls can also be expensive — basically the more windows or glass you use the more the cost increases. We pamper our gardens all year, but then desert them to go on vacation during what’s often the hottest, driest time of the year. A little planning can soften the blow. Ideally, a neighbor or fellow gardener could handle watering and other tasks while you’re away. But if that’s not possible, here are some easy ways to keep your plants and flowers alive while you sip Mai Tais on the beach.

Watering systems From old-fashioned to high-tech, there are a lot of ways to keep your lawn and/ or garden properly hydrated while you’re away. First, check the forecast. If rain is likely during your vacation, you may not need to do a thing, although gardens typically need 1 to 2 inches of moisture a week to stay healthy, says Matt Armstead, creator of the gardening app Sprout it. “No matter what, make sure you water your garden very deeply right before you leave,” he says. “Soak it thoroughly several times in the days leading up to

your departure.” If rain’s not likely, or you’re going to be gone for more than a few days, a timed sprinkler or drip irrigation system is a better solution. Make your own by poking a few (tiny) holes in a milk jug and setting it in the garden near the base of your plants. Holly Jo Anderson, a 48-year-old gardener in Plymouth, Minnesota, goes even more low-tech, poking holes in a gallon-size plastic baggie filled with water and hanging it over her flower pots. Soaker hoses are another good option, and available at any home improvement store. Jennifer Feller, head of a sustainable design company in Arlington, Massachusetts, installed a drip irrigation system a couple years ago to keep her vegetable garden alive when she’s gone six weeks every summer. “Honestly, I didn’t think it would work that well, but at this point I’m in love,” she says. “I set it up on a timer and every morning it goes on for an hour by itself and delivers a steady drip to my plants. It doesn’t waste any water to the air, like a sprinkler, and I can set it up to go

wherever I want.” Easy Roller self-watering pots are also available for containers. Each holds up to 1½ gallons of water in a reservoir at the bottom. Or fill a 2-liter plastic soda bottle with water and insert it onto an Aqua Stick, a green plastic cone which you then stick in the soil of potted plants.

Fencing If you don’t already have some type of fencing in place, an electric or more traditional wooden fencing system might be something to consider to keep pests at bay. Self-supporting, mesh enclosures called pest-control pop-ups are also available for smaller areas. If you’d rather go the natural route, spray a mixture of garlic and egg substitute on your plants to help repel deer and other creatures, says Elizabeth Dodson, founder of the home-maintenance and organization software HomeZada. Bar soap, broken into chunks and hung from strings or in old nylons on trees near prime deer feeding areas, also works.
