Tips, serious and not, for keeping squirrels away THE ASSOCIATED PRESS They’re vermin to some. Cunning adversaries to others. Squirrels have long been a source of fascination and frustration for gardeners and bird enthusiasts engaged in a near-constant battle to keep them away from the nuts and seeds put out for birds. Greased poles. Loud music. Motion-activated sprinklers. Bill Adler Jr. has heard all the strategies. And tried many of them. The 57-year-old humor writer has been collecting tips to keep squirrels from avian meals for three decades, and recently updated his 1988 book, “Outwitting Squirrels: 101 Cunning Stratagems to Reduce Dramatically the Egregious Misappropriation of Seed From Your Birdfeeder by Squirrels” (Chicago Review Press), for a third edition. The most important thing to know? While technology has changed, squirrels still have little else to do all day but strategize. And they’re good at it. “There’s no one technique that works for everyone,” Adler says. Try a few different strategies, and be willing to change. Most of all, Adler says, don’t sweat it too much. “I have to admit, I care a little less (these days). I care in a different way,” he says of his squirrel strategy. Squirrels still eat more from his birdfeeders than the birds do, but “I don’t mind that I personally don’t always win. “I enjoy outwitting them, I do. But these days I win the battles and not the war.” Here are some tips (some serious, some not) from Adler and others to bring a little harmony to

your backyard: Resigned to the fact that squirrels are going to call his Washington, D.C., yard home, Adler puts out some unsalted mixed nuts along his steps. “If you feed them, they will tend to leave the birdfeeder alone,” he says. Squirrels also love corn, so if you don’t want them invading your feeder, keep your birdseed corn-free. You also can try filling your feeder with safflower seeds, which are high in fat and protein. “Many favorite backyard

birds favor safflower seeds, but squirrels typically do not,” says John Schaust, chief naturalist for Wild Birds Unlimited. These days, there are motion-activated outdoor cameras if you want to monitor your feeder, and even motion-activated sprinklers to douse offending squirrels. “Squirrel-proof” birdfeeders abound. The best, according to Adler and other experts, are those that sit on a 5-foot pole and are covered with a plastic dome or “baffle” that’s hard for squirrels to cling to.

Getting a counter to fit takes time Q. Mr. Deahl, I bought a counter top from the local lumber company to replace mine at home. We measured and patterned it well so it would fit and gave this information to them to have it built to size including installed end caps. Now I have picked it up and brought it SQUARE home. It has come CORNERS in two sections separated at the Jeff Deahl miter. I think I can put that together but how do I get it to fit the wall? Alan of Angola

A. Getting a counter to fit perfectly is one of the great crafts of our trade but it can be accomplished given you take the time necessary to make it right. It is not something you can just plop onto your cabinets and walk away from. First you want to make sure that there is filler blocking in the underside of the counter to make sure it sets at the right height. Then you can dry set both side pieces to see how they fit your walls. It is common that there are variations in the length of the wall in and out slightly. Take a pencil and scribe along the top of the back splash or flat counter surface. You can now use your belt sander to sand the edge to fit nicely to your existing wall.

Make sure that the miter corner will come together perfectly before you make any changes to the top because you might need to take a little more off one end or the other to allow the miter to come together just right. Once you have made sure everything is right you can get out the glue and miter bolts and put it together. You might still have to pull it away during installation to do a little more sanding; then final place and screw from the underside. Spring is a time of year when many people resolve to give their homes or apartments a thorough cleaning. Spring cleaning projects help people revitalize their homes for the warm months ahead, when windows are once again opened, fresh air pervades homes and items that might have accumulated over a dark and dreary winter have become a distant memory. Many families have spring cleaning rituals that allow them to efficiently clean their homes in a single weekend. But it’s just as important for spring cleaners to place as great an emphasis on the environment as they do on efficiency when cleaning a home. Eco-friendly spring cleaning practices produce less waste and rely on less chemicals to rejuvenate a home and get it ready for those seasons when huddling inside under the covers takes a backseat to lounging around the house as fresh air washes into the home. The following are a handful of ways to efficiently clean a home while also protecting the environment. • Clear out the clutter. Clutter is an enemy to homeowners and the environment alike. That’s because addressing clutter is often an inefficient process in which homeowners methodically go through items that have accumulated over the years, individually choosing which items to keep and which items to discard. Clutter can also prove harmful to the environment because rooms filled with clutter tend to collect dust, reducing air quality and leading to more indoor air pollution that can prove harmful to human health. When sifting through clutter in a home, discard those items that have gone ignored for years, as they likely have little or no financial value and it’s safe to assume they serve no practical purpose as well. Once clutter has been cleared out, prevent more of it from accumulating by making a conscious effort to discard items once they no longer serve any practical purpose. This includes old newspapers and magazines, as well as any other items that are likely to sit in a pile or on a shelf for months on

end. Preventing the buildup of clutter reduces the amount of time you need to spend spring cleaning. • Use cleaners only when windows are open. Refrigerators are plugged in all day long, and those that are not operating at peak efficiency can cost you a lot of money in the long run. Periodically clean the coils on the back of your refrigerator so it can operate more efficiently. Vacuum cleaners should also be inspected before each use to make sure reels are not covered in hair, which can make it nearly impossible for the machine to collect dirt and dust from the floors. • Use reusable cloths. We bought food bowls, borrowed a crate and dusted off baby gates. But soon after we adopted our 13-week-old puppy, we discovered the house really wasn’t ready. Clove, a Labrador retriever mix, chewed wires we thought were hidden and investigated stairs we thought she’d ignore. She rummaged through deep plastic bins holding smelly shin guards and plucked snow-soaked mittens from our warm radiators. Within a week of her arrival, we had to block off power strips, reorganize our mudroom, devise a new plan for drying winter gear and gate the staircase. “It’s a lot like having an infant in the household,” said Pamela Barlow, animal behavior counselor at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ adoption center in New York City. Barlow says puppies need constant supervision and a safe environment to explore. She cautions against confining them so much that they don’t get outside experiences. It is hard to go back and socialize puppies if owners miss the window of opportunity to do so. Puppies are drawn to things they can chew on and are stimulated by things that move, said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, director of the Penn Vet Behavior Service at the University of Pennsylvania. “Many times we think that we should protect our home from a new puppy,” Siracusa said, because the puppy could potentially cause damage. But more important is the opposite: making sure that puppies are safe in their new home. Most essential is to create a safe haven — a place where the puppy can rest and sleep when there is too much excitement or stimulation, such as when kids have friends visiting, Siracusa says.
