Puppy-proofing? Protect your dog — and your home THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

We bought food bowls, borrowed a crate and dusted off baby gates. But soon after we adopted our 13-week-old puppy, we discovered the house really wasn’t ready. Clove, a Labrador retriever mix, chewed wires we thought were hidden and investigated stairs we thought she’d ignore. She rummaged through deep plastic bins holding smelly shin guards and plucked snow-soaked mittens from our warm radiators. Within a week of her arrival, we had to block off power strips, reorganize our mudroom, devise a new plan for drying winter gear and gate the staircase. “It’s a lot like having an infant in the household,” said Pamela Barlow, animal behavior counselor at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ adoption center in New York City. Barlow says puppies need constant supervision and a safe environment to explore. She cautions against confining them so much that they don’t get outside experiences. It is hard to go back and socialize puppies if owners miss the window of opportunity to do so. Puppies are drawn to things they can chew on and are stimulated by things that move, said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, director of the Penn Vet Behavior Service at the University of Pennsylvania. “Many times we think that we should protect our home from a new puppy,” Siracusa said, because the puppy could potentially cause damage. But more important is the opposite: making sure that puppies are safe in their new home. Most essential is to create a safe haven — a place where the puppy can rest and sleep when there is too much excitement or stimulation, such as when kids have friends visiting, Siracusa says. For the Sullivan family of South

Orange, N.J., a crate has proven to be more useful for keeping their puppy, Angus, safe than his exercise pen has. Angus, a Bichon Frise-poodle mix now 5 months old, learned how to get out of the pen the first day, said Elie Sullivan. She keeps the door of his crate, located in her sons’ room, open. “He’ll go in there and have a nap,” she said as Angus, as soft as a skein of cashmere, cuddled in her lap. Sullivan blocked stairs, moved low baskets into closets and bought tall hampers to prevent Angus from raiding the laundry. “I like my house,” she said. “I didn’t want it torn up.” She also ensured that her house plants are safe for dogs. Alexis Shield was prepared with puppy gear and house-training research before bringing home Teddy, an Australian Labradoodle, when he was 9 weeks old. Thanks to her planning and consistency with Teddy, she has been amazed at how fast he learned. What she didn’t expect, says Shield, who lives in a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C., was how hard it would be to prepare her three young sons and supervise them with the puppy. She has Teddy’s crate in the kitchen, a safe place for him amid the household hubbub. Initially, Shield would occasionally put Teddy in the crate when she needed to do something and couldn’t watch him; now a bit older, he’s just in the crate when she leaves the house and at night, when he sleeps. Puppy-behavior experts recommend these steps to protect your puppy at home: — Gate off rooms where you don’t want your puppy to roam. For instance, one of Barlow’s clients is an artist with a studio in her house. The artist gated off the studio so the puppy couldn’t run around the easels, paint and chemicals.

In this March 19, photo, a puppy rests by a gate that prevents her from entering a formal dining room where there are fragile items and furniture with sentimental value. Experts advise puppy-owners to gate off rooms where they don’t want their puppy to roam.

— Let puppies earn their freedom. Give them one space or room at a time. That way, owners can actively supervise them and limit any bad behavior. — Create a safe confinement area — a crate or exercise pen, for instance — where the puppy can stay when you are not home. There should be enough space for a sleeping area and a potty area when puppies are very young. Also essential is a non-spill water bowl.

Getting a counter to fit takes time Q. Mr. Deahl, I bought a counter top from the local lumber company to replace mine at home. We measured and patterned it well so it would fit and gave this information to them to have it built to size including installed end caps. Now I have picked it up and brought it SQUARE home. It has come CORNERS in two sections separated at the Jeff Deahl miter. I think I can put that together but how do I get it to fit the wall? Alan of Angola

A. Getting a counter to fit perfectly is one of the great crafts of our trade but it can be accomplished given you take the time necessary to make it right. It is not something you can just plop onto your cabinets and walk away from. First you want to make sure that there is filler blocking in the underside of the counter to make sure it sets at the right height. Then you can dry set both side pieces to see how they fit your walls. It is common that there are variations in the length of the wall in and out slightly. Take a pencil and scribe along the top of the back splash or flat counter surface. You can now use your belt sander to sand the edge to fit nicely to your existing wall.

Make sure that the miter corner will come together perfectly before you make any changes to the top because you might need to take a little more off one end or the other to allow the miter to come together just right. Once you have made sure everything is right you can get out the glue and miter bolts and put it together. You might still have to pull it away during installation to do a little more sanding; then final place and screw from the underside. Growing asparagus Rich in iron, calcium, vitamin C and B vitamins, asparagus is one of the first crops to be harvested in the spring and if given the proper planting and care, an asparagus bed can be productive for 15 years or more. The asparagus bed should be located in a sunny area. It can tolerate a little shade but the plants will not be as vigorous and full sun helps minimize the threat KNOWLEDGE of disease. TO GROW The soil will need to have a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 and be well drained as soggy soil Karen Weiland will cause root rot. It is best to have the soil tested as asparagus will not grow well if the soil pH is less than 6.0 and the levels of potassium and phosphorus are also important to the vigor of asparagus.

Asparagus can be planted mid-April through late May after the soil has warmed up to about 50 degrees. Dig a furrow about 6 to 10 inches deep and 12 to 18 inches wide. Apply to the bottom of the furrow about 1 pound of 0-46-0 (triple superphosphate) or 0-20-0 (superphosphate) fertilizer for every 50 feet of row. This will make phosphorus available right away to the newly-planted crowns. Planting 1-year-old crowns will produce a quicker crop than sowing seeds. Space the crowns about 1 ½ feet apart in the row. The crowns need to be centered in an upright position in the furrow and the roots spread out. If more than one row is planted, the rows should be spaced about 5 feet apart. Wide spacing promotes the rapid drying of the fern tops to help prevent disease. After the furrow is filled back in to its original soil level do not tamp it down. Asparagus likes loose soil. Do not harvest the asparagus shoots during the year it was planted. The ferns that emerge from the spears produce

food for the plant and move it down to the crown for the next years spear production. Asparagus is very drought tolerant and usually does not need any supplemental watering. However, if rainfall is short after planting, a little watering would be beneficial to the crowns. Do not cut the fern growth at the end of the growing season. Leaving it intact over the winter will catch snow for additional soil moisture and provides insulation for the crown. Remove the old fern growth by cutting or mowing it off about the first week of April. As always, happy gardening! Roofs get colorful: How to make good choices THE ASSOCIATED PRESS When a 2011 storm destroyed their black shingle roof, Carol and Ray Knoff of Vinton, Iowa, opted to replace it with a roof in vintage Victorian colors: a clay-like red and gray. Victorian homes typically had red slate roofs, which weathered gray over time, so the blend worked, says Carol Knoff. “It took Vinton a while to like it,” she says, but the neighbors have since come around. The 1901 house is among several Victorians built when Vinton housed one of the world’s largest canneries. Many homeowners these days are shunning monotone roofs of brown, black and gray and perking things up with color — blues, reds, purples, greens or combinations of those hues. “A lot of people are going with roofs that stand out on their own,” says Kate Smith, a Newport, R.I.-based color consultant. “They want something different that expresses them and expresses their personality.” Which could be a tricky proposition, says Smith: “You want to stand out while still fitting into your neighborhood,” she says. She admits to being taken aback herself when colored roofs first came into vogue several years ago.

Exterior home color should always be used judiciously, she says. But it is even more crucial to use it correctly when you’re adding it to a large fixed feature, like a roof, that is not easily changed with a fresh coat of paint. “Anything that’s permanent needs to blend,” she says. “You don’t want to have too many colors that aren’t working together.” One trick for doing that, Smith says, is to select roof colors true to your home’s history and architecture, and in natural shades. For instance, Victorian homes originally had colored roofs — reds, orange, purple and green were typical — because the color of the slate varied so much, she says. Homeowners wanting to restore that look should match those subtle tones. “When you saw purple, it was not a bright Barney purple,” she says. Bright metal roofs — most often red or green — are better suited for farmhouse-style homes, or used over small structures like porticos or bay windows. Steel blue is more European. Colored roofs are also starting to crop up on “new American-style” homes, which Smith describes as combining popular styles and materials — perhaps, say, a stone and

brick exterior with a copper roof. The demand for colored roofs led DaVinci Roofscapes of Kansas City, Kan., to create faux slate and shake (wooden shingle) roofing in 49 colors “so homeowners can mix and match those if they want to get really creative,” says the company’s Wendy Bruch. DaVinci’s palette is based on the naturally occurring colors seen on historically accurate roofs, she says. But custom colors are increasingly popular, too. “There can be some crazy things going on because we can create new colors,” Bruch says. DaVinci has worked with customers to create colors ranging from a chateau blue for a French provincial-style house to a green that matched the color on a metal roof with weather-related damage. Many customers appreciate help picking the right shades, Bruch says. “It can make it confusing for the homeowner when you have too many options,” she says. For Knoff, the risk of installing a colored roof was well worth taking. “We absolutely love it,” she says. “When you see our house, it really stands out. But Victorians are supposed to be homes that stand out.”

Walls can get dirty before you know it — from a splatter of spaghetti dinner to the crayon artistry of a roaming toddler to fingers simply reaching for a light switch. It’s easy to pass by walls and woodwork every day without a second glance, but spring-cleaning season is a great time to give them the attention they deserve. Like many housekeeping tasks, regular cleaning can help avoid bigger cleanup work later on. “It doesn’t have to be as difficult of a job as it sounds,” said Amy Panos, senior editor at Better Homes and Gardens. “The easier you can make it on yourself, the more likely you are to do it.”

Dirt and scuffs Walls tend to get dirtiest around light switches and door knobs. “Even if a hand looks clean, it still has a little dirt and oils that over time build up and eventually make that area of the wall dirty,” Panos said. Walls also get marked up from accidental kicks or the brush of a bag near the baseboards. Parents know how toddlers’ hands often find their way to walls, either with filthy fingers or with crayons or markers. These fingerprints and other blemishes are best tackled right away. “The sooner you can get to a mark that is noticeable, the easier it will be” to clean, said Sharon Grech, a color and design expert for Benjamin Moore. People are wary of cleaning or washing painted surfaces because they fear the process will remove the paint. But Grech said the technology has improved over the last decade, and paints now are more stain-resistant and durable for cleaning. Still, it’s important to use the right products. To remove everyday marks, Grech suggested using a clean cellulose sponge with a little warm water. “Just give it a good rub,” she said. “Wait for it to dry and see if it’s clean.” If the dirt is still evident, repeat the process using a dab of dish detergent and wipe the area dry with a clean sponge, rag or paper towel. “Warm water does miracles with a sponge,” Grech said. “You want to avoid using regular household cleaners that have ammonia and other products in them” because they can change the sheen

Cleaning those areas can instantly make the room seem brighter. “It really glistens,” Grech said. “It’s like putting on a nice lip gloss.”

Dust and cobwebs While most people know to take care of an unsightly mark, many overlook cleaning the whole wall, Panos said. Once you have a fresh coat of paint, lightly dust the walls about every three months. “You don’t need to get a bucket and soap and sponge and completely wash down the walls,” she said. “Make it easy on yourself by getting a tool with an extension pole so that you can stand on the ground and take care of the job in just a few minutes rather than having to drag out a ladder.” Clean the ceiling first, with a dust-attracting microfiber mop on the extension pole for smooth ceilings, or a slightly damp paint roller on the pole for a
