Stairways difficult type of carpentry Q. The large post on my stairway is loose and makes the whole hand railing loose. I can’t find any screws to tighten to correct this problem. How do I tighten my stairway up? Thomas of Auburn A. Stairways are an intricate SQUARE combination of CORNERS newel (the large post), banister Jeff Deahl (handrail) and balusters (spindles). It depends on when your house was built and how fancy it is as to whether you have goose necks, volutes or turnouts.
•
Typically in older houses stairways were very involved and required a superior wood craftsman. In my option stairways are the most difficult type of finish carpentry and are done right by a small percentage of carpenters. During installation even a hole drilled a 1/16” too big for a screw holding a newel post over time will become loose. Handrail systems have got to be strong and durable but also decorative and if the newel post is improperly installed can make the whole stairway shaky. The newel post should be notched into the floor system and hidden lag bolted to the rough framing of the floor and stair structure. To access these points would require removing stair
treads and possibly finish flooring. You can sometimes access the post from the underside of your floor system to additionally secure the post. Most commonly, to fix the loose post you would drill a hole and install longer lag bolts from the surface of the post into the structure of the stairs. Once the post is secure now cut a wood dowel rod (preferably the same wood species of your existing stairs) and fill in the hole. Finish the wood to match your stained or painted stairway. Consider other options for the home office THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The home office, it seems, is going the way of the fax machine. Interior designers say families are finding more inventive uses for their homes’ extra little rooms — optimistically called “bonus rooms” by real estate agents. With the spread of wireless Internet and portables devices such as tablets, it’s common now to send spreadsheets and emails from any room in the house, not to mention the nearest coffee shop. In fact, among major home-renovation projects, home-office improvements provide the puniest return on the investment when a home is resold, according to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “cost vs. value” report. So instead of that dust-collecting desk, many families are seeking creative ways to customize these alcoves as game rooms, dressing rooms, small theaters and more. “I get this question a lot,” says Elizabeth Cb Marsh, an associate interior designer at Jenkins Baer Associates in Baltimore. “Especially in large, new-construction homes, there are these bonus rooms that are just there.” When her clients make over a pre-existing office, she usually recommends trying to preserve any built-in features, such as shelving or cabinetry. If the space is large enough, she says, one option is to create a billiards room. Find a small (7-foot) pool table to place in the center of the room. If there’s a wood counter, retrofit the top with a waterproof material such as stone for an elegant wet bar, and if you have the budget, install plumbing for a small sink. Add barstools, a high-top cocktail table and a pendant lamp over the pool table. A smaller office can have a second life as a luxe dressing room, according to Marsh. Whether you draw inspiration from “Downton Abbey” or certain Beverly Hills housewives, the first step is to install a wall of shelving for shoes and clothes. Keep the decor minimalist, she advises, with a neutral paint color, a pair of sconces, and a tufted ottoman in the center of the room. Add a floor mirror and a vanity, and accessorize with vintage hatboxes, a dress form or an antique trunk. If the room has windows, be sure to hang light-filtering curtains to protect your clothing. Families with children have even more options for converting an office space. These days, it is common to

To begin, she recommends giving each kid a workspace: a small metal desk in a fun color with a clip-on lamp and a comfy swivel chair. Create a comfortable reading nook on the floor with beanbags. Then mount floating shelves from floor to ceiling and display books with the covers facing out to entice young readers. Appoint one wall as a place for scribbling ideas or displaying schoolwork by applying a layer of magnet paint and then chalkboard paint from floor to ceiling. Consider allowing a computer for older kids’ homework, but try to banish video games and other distractions, says Project Nursery co-founder Melissa Fluhr, who stresses the value of a quiet, contemplative space. If contemplative is not your family’s speed, Fluhr suggests using the bonus room as an off-off-off-Broadway theater. For a kid who likes to perform skits, play
songs and choreograph dances, build a basic plywood stage in the corner of the room. Above that riser, hang a rounded shower-curtain rod and a pair of dark, tab-top curtains. Hang costumes and dress-up clothes in a cubby, and store puppets, musical instruments and other props in a toy chest. Finish by hanging a mirror at tyke height so children can watch themselves rehearse, and don’t forget to add a few comfy chairs for the audience. If your child has another obsession, turn an undersized room into her special hangout. For example, if she is into outer space, turn it into a mini planetarium with a dark-painted ceiling and a night-sky projector. Just be prepared to update the theme in a year or two when your child’s interests inevitably leap to something else. “Having this little bonus room almost gives you the excuse to go wild,” Ginocchio says. “You don’t have to spend a ton of money or think, what’s going to be my return on investment? It’s a chance to have fun.”

How to pick the right mulch THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Compost or mulch? People often confuse the two, although each fulfills a different function in gardening. Which one you want depends on your needs. “Compost is used to feed crops; mulch is used to suppress weeds,” said Daniel McGrath, a horticulturist with Oregon State University Extension. “Compost is decomposed organic matter that is generally higher in nutrients and relatively low in carbon compared to mulch. Mulch is raw, un-decomposed organic matter.” Unlike compost, mulch is generally not mixed into the soil, he noted, but is applied 2 to 4 inches deep on top of the soil around a tree or shrub. Mulch has fewer nutrients and is not meant to replace fertilizer, which should be added as a supplement. Mulching does, however, maintain soil moisture, prevent most weed seeds from germinating and keep soil temperatures constant around plants, said Martha Smith, an extension horticulturist with the University of Illinois. Which kind of mulch you choose depends on what you’re growing and where. Some mulch, especially crushed rock and commercially made, color-enhanced mixtures, can beautify pathways, driveways and play areas. Good mulch is easy to apply and remove; is free of noxious weeds, insects and disease; and adds organic materials to the soil as it breaks down. “There are different byproducts used across the U.S. based on local supply,” Smith said. That includes pine needles in the South, hazelnut shells in the Northwest and buckwheat hulls in the Southeast. Some different mulch materials from which to choose: SHREDDED BARK, WOOD CHIPS AND SHAVINGS. Easy to spread and long-lasting, but can rob the soil of nitrogen and make landscape plants turn yellow. Look for “arborist chips” or ground-up tree branches that can make a good mulch and often are available for the asking from tree trimmers. Gravel and stones. Stone doesn’t have to be replaced like organic mulches, but it is expensive and will work into the ground. Stone is great for problem areas, though, like deep shade or in channels cut for stormwater runoff.

Enjoy this olive that’s not an olive BY LEE REICH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Outside my window is a large, rounded shrub with leafless branches suffused in a golden haze. That haze is actually hundreds if not thousands of golden berries clustered tightly along the thin stems. This shrub asked nothing more from me than planting and care — in the form of water and mulch — for only its first year in the ground. Although not considered so years ago when I planted it, the shrub — known as autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) — is now considered dangerous, an invasive species. It was brought over from Asia in the 1830s, and found the soils and climates here much to its liking. With the help of birds, which gobble down the fruits and subsequently eject the seeds, autumn olive has spread far and wide. There are dozens of wild autumn olives within a short bicycle ride of my garden. Autumn olive has its virtues Beyond its fecundity, adaptability and that golden haze, autumn olive offers
more pluses. The berries are preceded, in spring, by flowers that exude a sweet perfume. The wavy leaves are flecked with silver and are practically white on their undersides, so the whole plant is transformed into a shimmering globe in summer breezes. And the adaptability that makes this shrub weedy also means it can be used to re-clothe ground trashed by construction projects or mine spoils. The roots even harbor microorganisms that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can use, thus building soil fertility. Enjoy, but — in most places — do not plant Because of its invasiveness, autumn olive should not be planted wherever it is considered so; check with your state department of environmental conservation to determine whether or not it is invasive in your state. On the other hand, if you come upon some wild shrubs of autumn olive, enjoy the plant’s beauty and, after definitive identification, the berries. Eating them will make some small contribution to throttling the plants’ spread.
