Drafts can cause 40 percent of a home’s heat loss

Q. Jeff, my house is always cold around the edges of my floor. I have a basement underneath in part of the house and a crawl in the rest. Is there anything I can do to not have those cold floors? Margery of Angola A. This time of year that is a good question and an area of the SQUARE house insulation envelope that is CORNERS often overlooked. wall is a prime area to address in trying to better seal your home. At this area often called the band joist it connects to the sill plate on top of your foundation. Several pieces of structural wood all come together at this spot and form the floor before the walls are assembled on top. Nasty cold air can find its way in through all these seams and into your house around the edges. Air infiltration can account for as much as 40 percent of the heat loss of a typical home. You want to either caulk or foam seal all of these seams and any areas that pipes or wires come through the band board. All these seams and

holes if they were all put together could be like having a window open in winter. Once you have air sealed all the sources of air infiltration, add at least an R-10 insulation or have three feet of foam sprayed in this box joist space and down the foundation wall to at least 36 inches below the exterior grade. Right at Home: Bar gear gets swanky THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Home beer and spirit-making have become popular hobbies. Bars and beverage stores feature a growing range of artisanal spirits and craft brews. Cocktail parties are back in vogue. And retailers are responding to all this imbibing by offering furniture, barware and accessories with cosmopolitan flair. All you need are a few invitations, snacks and some good music for the party to begin. Let’s pop the cork on what’s new: “Nowadays, entertaining does not have to mean having a glitzy full bar. Bar carts have become more delicate, refined, and smaller in scale, so you can tuck them into a corner of a room or blend them in with the rest of the furniture,” says Veranda magazine’s market editor Catherine Lee Davis. West Elm’s Parker slim-profile cart in acorn-stained walnut veneer with brass rail trim has a mid-century vibe. The walnut-stained Dodson cart features a flip-down front concealing a mirror-lined interior with plenty of storage. And a cart in polished nickel with two foxed mirror shelves evokes Art Deco glamour. (westelm.com ) If you want the look of a built-in bar, consider Pottery Barn’s modular collection of wine grids and drawered cabinets. In black or mahogany finish, the pieces can be configured to look like a hutch or buffet. (potterybarn.com ) Davis says that with barware, the trend is toward shaking it up. “We see lots of different materials like hammered silver, tortoise, or shagreen,” she says. “It’s all about mixing and matching. After all, entertaining should be about having fun.” Gent Supply Co. has a natty collection of coasters, glassware and flasks printed with illustrations of turn-of-the-century gentlemen duelers, narwhals, anchors, and animals dressed in distinguished garb. (gentsupplyco.com ) Artist Richard E. Bishop, known for wildlife etchings in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, has his work on an array of bar glasses and decanters. Ducks, trout, foxes and horses set a “country house” tone. (richardebishop.com ) A punchbowl that rests in the clutches of an octopus, and a sculpted shell held by a delicate coral stand are part of an aluminum barware collection at Z Gallerie. There’s also a faux crocodile service tray in rich eggplant, studded with silver rivets, that makes a sophisticated statement. (jcp.com ) At Homegoods, there are hammered metal cocktail shakers with handy drink recipes printed on the side. Standing wine buckets are useful accessories, leaving more room on dining tables and buffets for nicely-sized tools — small muddlers, sieves, scoops and tongs, for example — that will have amateur bartenders looking like experts. (homegoods.com ; surlatable. com ) Making a good martini may be an art, but how about making your own gin? No bathtub is required, just a kit like one from Uncommon Goods containing all the spices, juniper berries and accessories needed to turn garden-variety vodka into a custom gin. New York artist Aymie Switzer’s laser-etched cedar coasters depict neighborhood maps of many major cities,

including Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco. Coasters recycled from old tires are stamped by Los Angeles artists with different graphic number fonts. And Colorado designer David Rasmussen’s black walnut stemware is distinctive and beautiful. All at uncommongoods. com . Whether it’s a swanky gathering or a casual movie night, provide your drinking guests with a variety of interesting treats. Pier 1’s Tasting Party collection includes one-bite ceramic dishes, shot glasses and spoons which can be stored in your home bar. Ebony buffalo-horn condiment spoons and mottled horn bowls from WilliamsSonoma would add flair. (pier1.com ; williams-sonoma.com ) If you’re setting up a first apartment and don’t have much money, consider giving an old nightstand or tray table new life as a miniature bar. Hit flea markets and junk yards for salvaged tool trolleys, medical supply carts or old microwave stands and spiff them up with paint, paper or other decorative materials like stick-on tiles and mirror. Right at Home: Decor with built-in tech THE ASSOCIATED PRESS It’s one thing to have a beautiful, comfy bed. But what if it also included a TV screen, game console and dimmable, color-changing lights? Or say you’ve got just enough room in your apartment for a credenza or speakers, but not both. How about one piece that includes both — and a whole media system? The integration of technology into home décor has come a long way since clunky TV screens peered out of armoires and media cabinets; today’s super-thin screens can come embedded in the bathroom mirror or attached to the wall like pieces of art. (seura.com ; robern. com ) TV manufacturers are moving into OLED — organic light emitting diode — technology, which can be linked to computers and other tech devices. It’s thin as a pencil and able to be curved. (lg.com ) As for sound systems, Symbol Audio of Nyack, N.Y., has a New Audio Desk that incorporates high-quality speakers into a slim writing desk crafted from maple, walnut, oak or cherry. Baby boomers may remember the family’s old hi-fi system. While iPhones and iPads can now hold the equivalent of hundreds of Mitch Miller albums, there are still those among us who like the mid-century chic of a retro-styled system. Symbol Audio pays homage to the hi-fi with the Modern Record Console, a walnut cabinet outfitted with a hand-built turntable, amplifier and built-in wireless router. “The act of removing an album from its sleeve, cleaning and placing it on the turntable is interactive and physical. Fall is best time to apply lawn fertilizer Applying fertilizer is one of the most important procedures done as far as lawn care goes as it influences grass color, helps it deal with stress and prevents weed invasion and disease. Two important factors to consider when applying a fertilizer are when and how much. Fall fertilization has been proven to be the best time for application as it helps to produce the healthiest turf throughout the year. Potassium (K) are the three major nutrients needed by grass. Nitrogen gives the grass it’s deep, rich color and promotes vigorous growth, Potassium builds strong roots and Phosphorus is important in stimulating early root growth and promoting plant vigor. It is recommended to obtain a soil test before applying a lawn fertilizer so you can determine what mineral elements your soil needs. There are two types of Nitrogen, quick release (soluble) and slow release (insoluble). A good turf fertilizer will contain some of both. The slow release will provide nitrogen over a period of time but is not available to the plant during cool weather. The fast release will provide nitrogen almost immediately after application and during cool weather. To avoid fertilizer burn do not apply more than 1 ½ pounds of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet at one time, spread it evenly, apply when foliage is dry and then water it in after application. Return your grass clippings to the lawn. It’s free fertilizer. Grass clippings contain valuable nutrients that can generate up to 25 percent of your lawns total fertilizer needs. Photosynthesis is high during the fall even with the cooler temperatures. The higher the photosynthesis, the more

energy the plant will store over the winter and into spring thus producing a healthier grass plant. Mowing off more of the grass blade will result in reduced photosynthetic capacity which will reduce energy storage and a decrease in plant performance the next summer. There is a direct relationship between grass tops and roots. The more tops to the grass plant means more and deeper roots, which in turn means the grass plant can withstand stresses better. One last thing, mulch those tree leaves. Layers of tree leaves can smother and kill the grass beneath it this fall. Layers of tree leaves can also contribute to snow mold, a winter turf disease. Mulching leaves with a mower is much easier than raking, blowing or vacuuming them. Regularly mowing them in the fall will cut them into small pieces that will then filter into the turf.
