‘Going Faux’ can transform a home’s style THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Phoebe Taylor’s 20-year-old suburban Atlanta ranch house began plain and “builder grade.” A professional decorator, she transformed it with faux wood beams, decorative molding and a gold-spun paint job that looked like “soft marble.” Her vision: “what our dream house would have been if we had gone out and bought it.” It’s called “Going Faux” — turning homes into something they basically are not through prefab architectural embellishments and eye-tricking wall finishes. Enthusiasts say there’s no reason for even the most budget-conscious among us to live a cookie-cutter existence. “My house was not an expensive house. But even the million dollar houses don’t have this kind of detail,” says Taylor, adding that she recently sold the house in just one day. Other “faux” features to consider include ceiling decals that look like parts of elaborate chandeliers, cabinetry embellishments and painted AP wainscoting. Design options abound for driveways THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The driveway that came with the 1921 Craftsman-style house that David Ulick bought five years ago was the original concrete one, marred by cracks and with tree roots starting to break through. “I didn’t like the driveway,” said Ulick, of Pasadena, Calif. “I wanted something a little bit nicer.” He looked through books and drove through the Craftsman-rich neighborhoods of Pasadena to get ideas before deciding on a concrete drive with an antique finish, accented with reclaimed red bricks from the 1920s. “I wanted this to look like the original driveway, an original, nice driveway, and using used bricks gives it a nice old-fashioned look,” Ulick said. “It really makes it a grand entrance for the house,” he added, noting the brick walkway up one side. “I figured I’d treat the Craftsman the way it deserves to be treated, and maintain its design style and heritage.” While a driveway may still be a utilitarian afterthought for many homeowners, others like Ulick are adding some serious curb appeal to their homes by moving beyond basic options like grass or gravel, asphalt or concrete. “The driveway is commonly overlooked,” conceded Michael Keenan, an adjunct assistant professor of landscape architecture at the University of Minnesota. “Driveways are not cheap necessarily, but they are completely functional and necessary if you have a car and a garage.” Doing up the driveway, Keenan said, is a chance to “celebrate the function because it is a piece of the property you do use every day.” The design options have grown in the last decade or so, he said, as pavers — made from precast concrete, clay and natural stone like granite — are being turned out in a range of colors and sizes. Some have rounded edges for an older look; others are mottled to add color variation to the driveway. Installing a customized driveway is a way to put your own stamp on the hardscape and set your house apart from the rest. Depending on the neighborhood, the materials and the quality of the craftsmanship, Keenan said, a driveway also could increase a home’s resale value. “It does become a point of distinction,” he said. “It is something people notice. It is elegant.” The least expensive paved driveways are made of asphalt, which cost about $12 to $15 a square foot, and concrete, costing about $14 to $18 a square foot, Keenan said. Though concrete is more

Pavers, which start at about $20 to $25 a square foot, should last a lifetime, Keenan said. “The key is the fact that the pavement acts as flexible fabric and it can move with the earth, and isn’t a rigid system and isn’t prone to cracking,” he said. Pavers can be used to make traditional patterns like basket-weave or herringbone, or be fashioned into a custom look. For a less traditional look, use a paver that comes in three or four sizes and lay them out at random, Keenan said. Or get a custom design without breaking the bank by using concrete pavers accented with more expensive natural stone pavers. Keenan is also the co-founder and design director of reGEN Land Design in Minneapolis. He apworks with homeowners to find the best driveway for their home. People are most concerned with the color, which might be chosen by looking at the home’s roof, siding or trim color. “I don’t think you can make a value judgment on which one is the best,” Keenan said of driveway designs. “It’s got to fit the building that you’re paving next to.” He might recommend, for example, a traditional red-brick driveway to go

with a light blue Colonial home. For a contemporary, environmentally “green” home, he might choose light-colored, permeable pavers — a more environmentally sound choice because they let water back through to the earth under the driveway, rather than forcing it to run off and collect debris on the way to bodies of water. In Naples, Fla., landscape architect W. Christian Busk installs “living driveways” that feature real grass interspersed among pavers. That reduces heat and glare and provides some drainage. “We blur the lines between where driveway ends and where landscape begins,” says Busk, president of Busk & Associates. “It always looks beautiful.” Back in Pasadena, the concrete-andbrick option that Ulick chose is popular among the many Craftsman and other historical homes in the area, said Mark Peters, the chief estimator for Boston Brick & Stone, which helped create Ulick’s driveway. “It’s a very rich feel and it’s understated,” Peters said. Since he got his driveway in 2009, Ulick said, he has received many compliments, and people sometimes stop to ask if his driveway is the original. “That’s a bigger compliment,” he said, “that it looks like it’s been done years and years and years ago.”

Cabinets’ custom features lead to higher cost Q. What are the benefits of custom cabinets? I have priced both custom cabinets and semi-custom for my kitchen. I plan to remodel and there is a big difference in price and story. — Anthony of Clear Lake A. I’m over simplifying but here are the basics. Cabinets come in three categories: Good, Better, Best. Good cabinets that are designed SQUARE and made to be low CORNERS cost will have particle board sides, simple Jeff Deahl mechanical hardware, veneer finishes and come in very basic sizes. Better cabinets are manufactured with a huge selection of colors, finishes, wood species and sizes. Some lines of

cabinets called semi-custom will work with standard sizes where possible for the desired kitchen or bath layout. Then make a few cabinets to tie it all together or fill the space. Most of these cabinets will still use a filler piece to take up the small difference or to account for walls and ceilings not being perfect. These cabinet lines usually have a broad series of available colors, styles and makes of wood. Custom cabinets are built to size, finish and materials specified. Most custom cabinet makers produce a set of standard cabinet sizes, then vary when making the ends of special cabinets of you wishes to tie it all together. Some so-called custom cabinet makers will use lesser grade components just like the ones in the good category so you want to know the differences. Generally, custom cabinets will have superior grades and patterns to their woods. They will have smooth gliding drawers and solid hardware. Their fastening techniques should be superior; dove tailed drawer

boxes and high quality, even hidden components, should be included. Ultimately, a custom cabinet set would be built personally for you, changing standard features: Taller or shorter cabinets, cabinets with special features for disabled applications. Or cabinets deeper or shallower specifically for your needs. Custom cabinets are commonly used for theater rooms, bar areas, around fireplaces, that window seat under the bay window, cabinetry for the library, and so on. Custom cabinets are the ultimate in personal expression, but if you’re talking about a basic kitchen or bath and a budget is a concern, manufactured cabinets will give you the best bang for the buck. Cut back diseased foliage, but prune perennials later If a person were to take a look at my flowerbeds, they would immediately know that perennials are my absolute favorite. My beds are loaded with grasses, evergreens, ground covers and flowers. I especially like the fact that many of them reproduce and spread which gives me the opportunity to share my bounty of perennials with others. I like to leave some of my perennials standing during the winter months rather than cutting them down. Some perennials have rather attractive foliage or rather what is left of it after the cold weather has set in. Some also have seed heads that KNOWLEDGE are a source of food for TO GROW birds and stems that give them a place to hide when a predator is lurking about. For Karen Weiland some marginally hardy plants, leaving the stems aids in their overwintering. To help insulate the crowns of my chrysanthemums, I leave the stems standing and pack them with leaves. If a perennial is a late riser in

the spring, leaving the stems on will alert a person to not dig at that spot and harm the underground portion of it. There are some instances where you will want to cut back a perennial as in the case of a foliage disease. Diseased foliage should be removed to reduce the amount of re-infestation to the plant during the next growing season. If cutting is necessary or preferred, it should be done after the plant has gone dormant. This usually happens after a few hard frosts. When cutting, leave about 2 to 3 inches of the plant. Do not cut back to the soil as this can result in injury to the plant due to the fact that in some perennials, next year’s buds are right at the surface or a bit higher and not below the soil line. Wait until late winter or spring to prune woody plants if possible. Cutting them in the fall will leave open wounds that will not heal quickly and be an invitation for disease to enter the plant. If you have done some late fall plantings of perennials I would recommend that they be mulched very well to prevent frost heaving and the chance that they will not survive the winter. I generally like to place about 2 to 3 inches of bark mulch around a late planting. Fall is a good time to give

your perennial beds a layer of protective mulch in general. Prior to mulching you may want to spread a layer of compost, about an inch or two, which is much easier done when the plants are cut back in the fall. If you have lots of different cultivars of a perennial, such as daffodils, hostas or daylilies, you might want to think about making a map of where they are located in your landscape. Labels have a way of working themselves out of the ground during the winter months or even during the growing season with plant maintenance, and get mixed up…..a map can help you keep everything straight. This offbeat raspberry is worth growing BY LEE REICH The Associated Press

When I really want to impress a visitor to my garden, I offer a taste of Fallgold raspberries. Many raspberries taste good, especially when picked dead ripe and popped into your mouth, but Fallgold is perhaps the tenderest and sweetest raspberry around. Here is a berry that you’ll never see in a supermarket; it’s too fragile to travel much further than arm’s length. Fallgold berries also have an unusual appearance. Their pale yellow, blushed orange color seems to speak to their sweetness and tenderness, and also probably helps hide the fruit from birds. As its name indicates, Fallgold bears fruit in the fall. In this, it’s not unique. There are a number of so-called “fallbearing” raspberries. These varieties begin their fall crop (it actually begins in late summer) starting at the tips of new canes, with fruit continuing to ripen down the canes until stopped by freezing temperatures.

Fallbearing raspberries are sometimes called everbearing raspberries, although they actually bear only two crops each season. The first, in midsummer, is borne lower on canes that grew the previous season, the ones that started bearing near their tips the previous late summer and fall. Knowing where and when these raspberries fruit tells you how to prune them. Easiest is just to cut the whole planting to the ground early each winter. This method sacrifices the summer crop but avoids any problems from winter cold or hungry deer. It also cuts down on the chances of disease, not that raspberries are so plagued by diseases. However, it seems a shame to choose that easier pruning route for Fallgold. Why? Because if you let it bear two crops a season, you’re forced to suffer only a short hiatus — usually only a couple of weeks — between the end of the summer crop and the beginning of the second crop. You get berries from midsummer right into autumn.

Pruning for two crops is not all that difficult. In winter or right after the summer crop finishes, cut down to the ground every cane that bore a summer crop. You can recognize these canes because they show their age with peeling bark. In winter, go over the planting and cut to the ground enough younger canes so that those that are left are a few inches apart and grow in a swathe no wider than 12 inches. Selectively remove the thinnest ones. With Fallgold grown for two crops each season, there’s still usually no need to worry about winter cold damage on those canes that remain. Despite its beauty, sweetness and tenderness, Fallgold is a tough plant. Don’t fret too much about deer damage either: Deer aren’t all that fond of raspberry canes, and Fallgold will compensate for any canes that are eaten with a subsequent, larger late summer and fall crop. ——— http://leereich.blogspot.com/ http://leereich.com/

Collect your own seeds for next year’s planting BY LEE REICH The Associated Press September finds me saving seeds of some of this year’s best sweet peppers and most colorful flowers to plant in next year’s garden. Why? Saving my own seeds from year to year gives me a bit of independence from seed companies, which, for one reason or another, may stop offering certain varieties. It’s also a way to maintain an annual supply of seeds that seed companies never offer, such as some of the so-called heirloom varieties handed down for generations from parents to children and from neighbor to neighbor. And with a seed packet often costing more than $3, saving seeds is also economical. This year, for instance, I grew a giant canning tomato from seeds given to me by a friend. Where did my friend get them? From another friend.

Avoid hybrids for seed-saving Heirloom seeds are from plants whose flowers self-pollinate. Some varieties of vegetables and flowers may not have been around long enough to be called “heirlooms,” but still might be from self-pollinating plants. Hybrid seeds, in contrast, are produced when the pollen of one selected plant is made to fertilize another selected plant. Hybrid plants often are more robust than their parents — they have so-called “hybrid vigor.” Producing hybrid seed of a known variety is beyond the capabilities of most gardeners. Male and female plants must be known or chosen, and then pollination effected without contamination from other plants or even the female plant itself. When it comes to flavor or beauty, hybrid is not always “high-bred.” New varieties of sweetpeas have beautiful flowers, but they cannot match the intoxicating fragrance of an heirloom variety such as Painted Lady, which was introduced nearly two centuries ago. The old Golden Bantam corn may not be as sweet as newer hybrids, but it has much richer, cornier flavor. Seeds taken from a hybrid plant will not, when planted, yield plants the same as the parent plant. Take the seeds out of a hybrid sweet pepper, such as Candy Apple, and you will not get Candy Apple fruits on those plants next year. So you must buy seeds of hybrid varieties if you want those specific varieties.

own garden plants, select plants that are healthy. Let fruits or flowers mature, whether they are the dry pods of bean plants or radish plants, the fruits of pepper or cucumber plants, or the dry seed heads of marigolds or zinnias. Mature pepper fruits generally are red, although some might be yellow or purple; the fruits are very tasty at this point. Mature cucumber fruits are hardly edible, with thick or hard skins and hard seeds. Rinse well and then dry the seeds from juicy plants. No need to do anything with the dry seeds you pop out of radish pods or rub from the heads of marigolds or daisies, except to pack them away. (Botanically, the “pod” of radish or other members of the cabbage family is not a pod, but a siliques, which is a pod-like structure with a membrane separating its two halves.) Cool, dry conditions keep seeds at their best in storage. Small envelopes are good for storing small seeds such as tomato, pepper and radish. A jar is a good long-term home for larger seeds such as beans and corn.

And next year ...? What kind of plants you end up growing next year will depend on whether the seeds you collect are from hybrid plants, and whether the seeds were from plants that self-pollinate or cross-pollinate. Cucumbers, for example, have separate male and female flowers, so they readily cross-pollinate. To perpetuate a non-hybrid cucumber variety, either grow the plants in isolation from other cucumber varieties or else bag and hand-pollinate a few female flowers with male flowers on the same plant. A female cucumber or squash flower is easily recognizable by the small fruit at the base of the flower. The most predictable outcomes from saved seeds will be from those taken from non-hybrid plants that have not cross-pollinated or do not do so readily — such as heirloom varieties of tomatoes and peppers. Expect some interesting results with the others.

Eek! What to do when there’s a mouse in the house THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Maybe you hear a rustling in your dog’s food dish. Or spot droppings in the cabinet under the sink. Or come face to face with a mouse itself. Besides the yuck factor, mice in the home pose a health risk, said Stuart Nichol of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We strongly encourage people at this time (of year) to rodent-proof their houses and try to prevent the rodents from coming in in the first place,” said Nichol, chief of the CDC’s Viral Special Pathogens branch. As the weather turns colder, mice are “looking for a little bit of warmth” and a way to get inside, said Missy Henriksen, spokeswoman for the National Pest Management Association. All they need is the smallest of holes, as small as a coin, to gain entry. So a first step in pest management is inspecting your home for possible entry points. Have the screens on the chimney, attic or dryer vents detached? Is the weather stripping around doors or windows worn? Has the putty come loose around air conditioning hoses, or where the electricity or cable wires go into the house? Is there shrubbery close to the house or ivy around the foundation and up the outside walls that mice can use to hide or climb? “The most effective means of pest control is controlling the problem before it becomes a problem,” Henriksen said. Pest control technician

Shane Flanagan usually starts with a visual inspection of the property to try to see where mice are getting in and where they might be nesting. He’ll look in the kitchen and unfinished areas of the basement and attics. “All that insulation is perfect nesting for mice and (other) rodents,” said Flanagan, who works for PestNow, based in Sterling, Va. Then he sets traps. Placement is key: Mice run along walls. “If you put them in areas where they’re running, you’ll catch them,” said Flanagan. For do-it-yourselfers, there are many kinds of traps available. There are the “old-school snap traps,” as Flanagan calls them; peanut butter works as an effective bait. For the more squeamish, there are snap traps in a plastic housing, so you don’t actually see the mouse when it’s caught. You can also purchase electronic traps and glue traps. Flanagan uses snap traps. When he returns to check them, “That gives me more of an idea of the population, how many we might have.” After removing any dead mice from the traps, he’ll set up bait stations inside and out to try to prevent further infestations. He’ll also try to seal up areas where he thinks mice are getting in and around the house. That might include putting copper mesh along the dishwasher line, a frequent way that mice get into the kitchen. And he’ll recommend that homeowners remove

The CDC also recommends picking up pet food and water bowls overnight, using thick plastic or metal containers to store grains and pet food, and placing bird feeders some distance from the house. “Pest control is based on science, not magic; remove the conducive condition, reduce the population and maintain it,” Flanagan said. Many pest control experts recommend against starting with bait stations. Dead, decaying mice can leave an odor, so it’s important to know where they are so you can get rid of them. Mice left unchecked can cause problems by chewing on electrical wiring and insulation. In addition, the CDC says mice and rats spread more than

35 different diseases globally. Nichol said hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), two viruses carried by mice, are associated with “particularly severe diseases.” LCMV poses a particular risk to pregnant women because it can cause congenital defects in the fetus, he said. “You don’t have to have direct contact with the mice to get an infection,” he said. “You can get it just from the droppings or the contaminated dust.” Safely dispose of any mice caught, and disinfect the areas where they’ve been. A bleach solution or Lysol-like spray works well, Nichol said. “We all know whether we have in the past had rodent problems,” he said. “If you’ve had that problem, get out ahead of it.”

Beautiful and sturdy with a flair for the dramatic, alliums are a graceful way to add color and architectural dimension to your garden. With large globes of tiny white, purple, yellow or blue flowers that rise from bulbs on slender green stems as high as 4 feet tall, they look like giant, fluffy lollipops — something Willy Wonka would have planted in the Chocolate Factory garden. Most bloom in late spring or early summer, so they fill the gap between spring bulbs and summer perennials. They’re also easy to grow, and resistant to deer and many other pests. “For people who are considering planting them, my advice is, don’t think twice. Do it,” says Michaela Lica Butler, a 38-year-old mother and gardener in Schweich, Germany, who has planted the giant, purple Globemaster allium for years.

Varietes While many people think of the trademark Globemasters found in Butler’s garden, there are dozens of varieties of ornamental alliums. Try the shimmering white flowers of the Mount Everest allium, or the fuchsia with metallic undertones in the Stars of Persia variety, says Kim Fusaro, head gardener at the Mohonk Mountain House resort in New Paltz, N.Y. If you like the look but need something a bit shorter, Fusaro suggests the yellow shades of the moly Jeannine or the flavum alliums. Looking to plant allium in a shady spot? Try the

triquetrum, also known as three-cornered leeks, which bear delicate white flowers with shades of blue and a triangular stem. Want something unusual? The drumstick allium produces egg-size (and egg-shaped) heads in a rich burgundy color, while the bulgaricum blooms are creamy and bell-shaped with tinges of green and pink that hang from baseball-size flowerheads.

Uses Alliums are typically displayed best among perennials as a border plant, says Amy Dube, a bulb expert with Dig.Drop. Done, a North American educational campaign promoting flowering bulbs. They hide their leaves, which whither quickly, and don’t take up much space, giving room to quickly emerging perennials. But don’t be afraid to use them elsewhere. Hans Langeveld, co-owner of Longfield Gardens in Lakewood, N.J., recommends using some of the shorter, smaller varieties in rock gardens, where they can thrive in the well-drained pockets between rocks. Some alliums can do well in containers, while the larger varieties are perfect for cutting gardens. “They are gorgeous just by themselves, or paired with a large monstera or philodendron leaf or two in a simple glass,” says New York-based floral designer Rachel Cho. “They have really long stems that are very sturdy, so I like to keep them really tall.” Butler likes to dry allium heads for centerpieces and even holiday decorations,

spraying them white and adding sparkles to make delicate winter snowballs.

Planting Alliums grow best in full sun, though some do well in part-sun or shade, and they prefer well-drained soil. Plant them in the fall as you would any other spring-blooming bulb. Wait until the weather cools to allow them several weeks to develop a root system before the ground freezes, Langeveld says. The bulbs should be planted at least 6 to 8 inches deep, even deeper for the larger bulbs, which can be the size of a tennis ball. “The general rule of thumb is to plant bulbs three

times the depth of the bulb itself, and then you just want to make sure that the root is facing down toward the soil,” Dube says. She recommends spacing the smaller bulbs about 3 inches apart and the larger ones up to 8 inches apart.
