Old meets new in glass designs for home THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

When silica, soda and lime meet high heat, a beautiful alchemy occurs. The result — a taffy-like substance otherwise known as glass — has inspired creative minds for centuries. Artists and craftsmen today often combine old-school techniques with new technology to create one-of-a-kind works of arts for the home. Internationally known sculptor Dale Chihuly, based in Tacoma, Wash., has drawn crowds to a variety of public spaces with his outdoor “glass garden” installations of imaginative, other-worldly creations. (chihuly.com ) You can find some of his smaller pieces — glass baskets, wall art and table sculptures — atartnet.com . In her Detroit studio, Nina Cambron fuses opaque, translucent and iridescent glass into wall panels resembling totems. The enduring quality of glass as an artistic medium is what drew her to it, she says. “It’s just so rich, smooth, shiny and permanent,” she says. “Unlike painting or drawing, you can’t erase and rework an area. After it’s fired, you’re done.” (ninacambron.com ) Gale Scott, a glass artist based in Worcester, Mass., uses a technique called “electroforming” that involves blowing glass into copper forms. The hot, soft glass meets the rigid metal and billows into ethereal shapes. (galescott. com ) New Yorker Peter Byrum displayed his paintings on glass at May’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair in Manhattan. Using acrylics, he paints natural elements like leaf fronds and coral on layered sheets of tempered glass, sometimes half a dozen or more. The effect is three-dimensional, an organic, ephemeral diorama. (peterbynum.com ) Thor and Jennifer Bueno of Spruce Pine, N.C., are inspired by nature, and form hot glass into shapes evoking water-washed rocks or molecular structures. “Walking along a river, light bounces across the water’s surface,” says Jennifer Bueno. Each sculpture is made by blowing and shaping molten glass into “pebbles.” The colors come from adding glass shards or powders. The piece is then baked to hardness, sandblasted and given a protective luster; the result looks remarkably like a rock scoured by the action of a swift current over time.

In another series, the pebble shapes are made out of the mirrored material known as mercury glass. “In its liquid state, glass glows with intense heat and moves slowly, as if self-propelled,” notes Bueno. “Mercury glass has the appearance of liquid metal, undulating and three-dimensional.” The finished glass resembles electrons, particles, even sound waves. Bamboo stems, flowers, and black and white city skylines seem to float, making for arresting wall art, particularly for large expanses of wall space. (wayfair.com ) At LaylaGrayce.com, the Worlds Away Marina Ice Glass collection of furniture has a Hollywood Regency vibe, cool and elegant. Nightstands, chests and other pieces are clad in a milky, translucent glass. Multitasking homeowners demand more of their space THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Washing clothes in the bedroom. Sending email from the laundry room. Busy Americans are demanding more from each room in the house, and spaces designed for multiple functions are popping up all over floor plans, design blogs and magazine spreads. “People multitask all the time. There is a definite correlation and carry-over in the home,” said Wendy Danziger, owner of Danziger Design in Bethesda, Md. She has helped clients create rooms for eating and watching television; housing guests and working from home; sleeping and doing laundry. Some homebuilders have added space for seating, desks and charging stations in the laundry room. “It’s happening all over,” Danziger said. “There’s a lot of strategy that goes on — a lot of compromise.” Furniture manufacturers, too, are helping to make every square inch count, said Pat Bowling, spokeswoman for the American Home Furnishings Alliance in High Point, N.C. Modern pieces include end tables that double as file cabinets, coffee tables with adjustable heights to accommodate working at a computer or eating, and chests with docking stations for electronics. The portability of laptops, tablets and other devices means you don’t need a dedicated home office to work at home. People can — and do — use electronics in the family room, bedroom and kitchen.

“Today’s furniture is multi-tasking furniture that can help you stay organized, stay connected and keep clutter at bay,” said Kim Shaver of Hooker Furniture in Martinsville, Va. “In versatile styles and silhouettes, these pieces fit any room — from the kitchen to the bedroom and from the family room to the entry hall or foyer — and provide multiple functions in each room.” Danziger says a console table with hinged leaves is a good option for a TV room that sometimes needs to become a dining room: When guests come for dinner, just slide the table away from the wall under the television and extend the leaves to create a table that seats up to six people. Nesting tables — stacking tables of different sizes — also help increase the functionality of a space, she said. She often puts them on wheels so they can easily be rolled to another area of the room for another use. She has worked with retirees downsizing to a smaller home and with young professionals squeezed into urban apartments. “Once home offices were the rage,” she said. Now, “it is not unusual to see living spaces where people eat, sleep, work and play games just for the sake of living in a city where one can walk to everything, including their office.” Frank Pitman of Frank Pitman Designs in Orange County, Calif., also has seen the trend. “There’s a lot of dual

Why not wash the clothing right there?” he said. Some of his clients like having a room’s secondary use come as a surprise: Television or computer screens that seem to “appear from nowhere” are good examples, he said. Murphy beds, which are

stored vertically in a cabinet along a wall, or murphy desks, which slide out bookshelves, are another way to keep a space’s other function hidden. Often the need to get more use out of a space arises when an elderly parent joins the household, a grown child returns home or a young family hires a live-in nanny, said Amy Albert, editor of Custom Home Magazine in Washington, D.C. “Multiple generations needs multi-functioning space,” she said.

With windows, consider needs

Q. I want to replace my existing windows, but I’m confused. What’s the difference between vinyl and wood? Jill of Avilla A. Jill, you’re not the only one confused, I’ve been a builder for 30 years and I learn something new every day about windows. It sounds like you are replacing windows in your existing home and there are a couple options. A replacement SQUARE series window uses CORNERS your existing window frame where you Jeff Deahl remove the window sashes and insert a new frame and window into the existing frame opening. Typically these are vinyl windows with an optional wood veneer on the inside for appearance. Replacement windows are different from new construction windows and will

usually look different inside and outside. The advantage of using replacement windows is that they fit within the existing frame openings and can be installed quickly and easily without the need to remove the siding and trim both inside and outside. When you use a replacement window, the new window will be more energy efficient than your original single pane window, but there will be air infiltration and leakage in the gaps and wall around the window openings. With new construction windows where you remove the whole window including the interior and exterior trim, you now have the ability to air seal and insulate the surrounding area of the window. The process takes more time and is more expensive but you’re getting a more energy efficient home. Once you’ve decided the type of window you can look at the different materials such as vinyl, fiberglass, wood or cladding over wood. Material choice will affect the overall thermal characteristics of the window. When comparing similar good, better, best windows the performances will be similar. In

comparing manufacturers always look at the “U” value; the lower the “U” value the greater the windows resistance to heat and cool flow and the better the insulating value. Fiberglass is a stable material and when cavities of the window frame are insulated, the thermal performance will exceed that of wood and vinyl. If your interest is sustainability, vinyl is theoretically recyclable but only 1 present of the material produced is actually recycled and it takes generations for plastic to degrade in the landfill. Fiberglass is 60 percent sand, a plentiful resource, and fiberglass does not give off gas such as vinyl. Wood and wood clad windows are the most environmentally friendly and typically a closer match to your existing homes interior. You have to weigh the pros and cons and take into consideration you own home and budget.

Looking for a cheaper way to fertilize flowers or keep pests at bay? A better tool for planting tiny seeds? The answers may lie in your home, where common household items like coffee grounds or old pie tins can become easy, eco-friendly tools to give your garden a boost without breaking the bank. Turn old boots or shoes into planters, or reuse packing peanuts by laying them at the bottom of large flower pots to aid in drainage and make for lighter lifting, suggests Stacy Tornio, editor of Birds & Blooms magazine. “You can take anything you have and upcycle it,” she says. Some simple, easy ways to repurpose household items for a bargain backyard:

Creative containers It’s easy to spend a fortune on pots and vases. But one easy way to start “upcycling” in the garden is by planting herbs, flowers and houseplants in everything from worn boots to old teapots and even bathroom sinks. “They contribute a touch of whimsy and even a ‘settled’ look to a garden scene,” Tornio says. Cristin Frank, a 38-year-old author and gardening blogger from Williamsville, N.Y., uses yogurt cups and other recyclable plastic containers as small pots for her “starter” plants in the spring. Old take-out coffee cups serve as starter watering cans with their smaller, perforated plastic tops. Birdbaths can also be made from household items like an old glass light shade mounted on copper tubing. Justin Cave, an Atlanta-based landscaper and former host of HGTV’s “Ground Breakers,” recently turned old shipping pallets into a vertical garden by covering the backs and sides with landscape fabric, stuffing them with dirt, and planting succulents and flowers in the slated openings. “It turned out awesome, and was very cost-effective,” he says.

Even something as innocuous as old nylons can be reused in the backyard to tie up floppy plants or line the bottom of pots so water can get through but dirt cannot. Packing peanuts are also a good drainage medium, and lighten the load when large pots need to be moved around, Tornio says.

And much of what you need may be sitting in your kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Coffee grounds, for example, can be sprinkled at the bottom of any plant to improve drainage in clay soils, and especially plants that like rich, moist organic soils like azaleas and blueberries, Tornio says. Tornio says soap can keep deer from feasting on trees and plants. She suggests breaking a bar of soap into pieces and hanging them from strings or in old nylons or net bags on trees or other structures near prime deer feeding areas. The scent
