One giant step: Pull the plug on the garbage disposal Q. My husband installed a new garbage disposal and now the dishwasher won’t drain. Are the two related? Vickie of LaGrange A. Vickie, it seems that the old adage “No good deed goes unpunished” fits right in here. Your husband in an effort to secure household SQUARE harmony has set CORNERS himself up for ridicule. In most cases, the Fred Kreigh dishwasher drain and the garbage disposal have a closer bond

than shipwrecked sailors on a sand spit. You see, the drain for the dishwasher enters the sink cabinet and is attached to a port on the side of the garbage disposal. This is done not only for convenience but as an opportunity for food particles to be run through the garbage disposal when the unit is done draining. The problem is that not all garbage disposals are installed in conjunction with dishwashers. Manufacturers install a plug in the port that the dishwasher hooks up to that must be removed before hooking the dishwasher drain to the disposal. It seems your husband left out one small step for do it yourself, but one giant step for successfully draining your dishwasher.
He will need to use a bit of care when removing the plug since simply knocking it into the hole will likely find this metal plug as part of the garbage the grinder is trying to shred. Picture the scene when you inadvertently drop a spoon in the running disposal — same basic result. I personally use our garbage disposal as a food processor for much of the fare that my wife provides. You might give it a try next time you’re offered broccoli cauliflower cream of mushroom jello.
