Cadets marching to band regionals By Garth Snow

The high school marching band competition season begins Saturday, Oct. 11, when Scholastic Class bands perform at Homestead and two other Indiana high schools. Many Fort Wayne area bands compete in the four classes of the Open Class, and begin competition at the regionals on Saturday, Oct. 18. Festival Class bands performed for judges Oct. 4, concluding their season. No Fort Wayne area bands are enrolled in Festival Class. Homestead High School is working for a 28th consecutive trip to the state finals and another Open Class A state title. This year’s show is titled “Dance of the Wind Spirits.” Concordia Lutheran High School took the Open Class C title last year, following finishing as first runner-up in 2012. The 2014 show is titled

Diane Scranton knows how to prepare for a cold Halloween night, and hundreds of zombies, ghosts and monsters. “One of my employees gets the hot dog costume on, with her hot dog hat, and she stands out there and passes out treats,” Scranton said. Scranton has kept the grill at Jeff’s Coney busy through nine Georgetown Halloweens. Scranton will join her business neighbors once again Friday evening, Oct. 31, to welcome an estimated 1,800 children to Georgetown Square. “The New Haven Alumni Band plays right in the breezeway between us and Zifﬂe’s [Rib Bar], so we get a lot of people in here,” Scranton said. “And we sell a lot. I just put more dogs on the grill. I just know I have to be prepared for it.” “It’s the longest running trick-or-treat event like this in the country, going

members. “It’s just kind of cyclical,” she said. “It all comes out in the wash.” Concordia’s show, arranged by Kent Klee, encompasses three numbers: “Earth and All Stars,” “Be Thou My Vision” and “Ascending.” Mike Beights is Concordia’s drill designer.

She said her father, the late Tom Jehl, started Georgetown Halloween in 1972. “It started out to be a safe trick-or-treat event, around the time when people were scared for the kids’ safety. You could trust your merchants. And it was well lit,” she said. And so it continues in 2014. “Lots of people will bring chairs and watch the trick-or-treaters,” Partee said. A costume contest is open to all ages. “We have prizes for different age groups and categories — homemade costume or scariest or cutest,” Partee said. “It’s infant to adult. We have a lot of adults dress up, too. “People who have done it year after year said they have never trick-or-treated anywhere else. Corned beef sandwich sale is temple’s top fundraiser Congregation Achduth Vesholom’s 13th annual Corned Beef on Rye — Sure to Satisfy fundraiser also offers the public a chance to visit the campus at 5200 Old Mill Road. Dine-in hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Rifkin Campus at 5200. Pickup and delivery are available. “Just sit down and chit chat and have a nice lunch,” said Bonnie Pomerantz. The project is the temple’s largest annual fundraiser. “It takes about a hundred people to pull this off — all volunteers,” Pomerantz said. Proceeds go into the general operating budget for everyday expenses, including many programs open to the general public. “It gives us an oppor-

tunity to share what we could call a taste of Judaism, to share it with the community,” said fundraiser co-chairman Kris Gray. “It also invites the community to come to our facilities.” Gray said the Rifkin Campus at 5200 is designed to consolidate different Jewish entities, including expansion to accommodate the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation. That organization’s move to the campus became ofﬁcial on June 1. He said the fundraiser is consistent with an ongoing effort to identify with the 46807 neighborhood where the temple is located and with the broader Fort Wayne community. “Hey, come on down and share some corned beef, in a cafe style,” he said. Beef Fundraiser link at templecav.org. The boxed meals include an overstuffed one-thirdpound corned beef deli sandwich, coleslaw, dill pickle and brownie and drink. Meals are $14 if ordered by Thursday, Oct. 23. Meals are $15 after that date and at the door. Orders of 12 or more sandwiches can be delivered for a charge of $6 per address. Delivery orders must be placed by Oct. 23. Also this year, the public may order corned beef at $12 a pound, or extra rye bread, pickles or brownies. The temple traces its roots to 1848 as Indiana’s ﬁrst Jewish congregation. A Philadelphia real estate ﬁrm bought Fort Wayne’s largest apartment complex, Canterbury Green, for $85.5 million. GoldOller Real Estate Investments announced the acquisition of the 2,000unit complex from AIMCO Holdings QRS Inc. The apartment commu-

Guests, volunteers travel to church dinners COMMUNITY DINNERS

The word “community” takes on a broad meaning each Thursday evening at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. The free, 6 p.m. meal welcomes everyone. Volunteers from outside the church join with cooks and servers from within the church. Student supervisors belong to Aldersgate or to churches across the county; they attend nearby Homestead High School, or Fort Wayne Community Schools, or Canterbury High School, or Carroll High School. Guests come from across Getz Road and from across county lines. They come for a meal, and they come for the company. Some of those who are being served choose instead to serve others, said the Rev. Derek Weber, the lead pastor of the congregation just north of Time Corners. “It’s creating a sense of belonging,” Weber said. “Some of the people who are very faithful about serving are not here on Sunday, but they feel a part

Construction is under way on a new, 9,100-square-foot strip center on an out-lot at the Marketplace of Canterbury. The Shoppes of Canterbury, at 3128 St. Joe Center Road, will include a 3,000-squarefoot Cap nâ€™ Cork liquor store and smaller spaces for as many as four other businesses, according to CBRE/Sturges information. The local liquor chainâ€™s store at the Marketplace of Canterbury was one of those destroyed in a fire, and that section of the

The related groups include Job’s Daughters for young women, the Demolay for young men, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Among the other “appendant bodies” are the York Rite, the Scottish Rite, the Daughters of the Nile, and the Shrine, linking to Shrine clubs. Buskirk invited those groups to share in the outreach. “The Job’s Daughters is Bethel No. 8, which means they were the eighth bethel in the state of Indiana to be organized, so they have a long, long history,” Buskirk said.

Five stores in Michigan, as well as stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Iowa, are also in the process of shutting down, according to various news reports. The local Kmarts began their liquidation sales on Sept. 28. The Decatur store has 49 employees and the Fort Wayne store has 69, mostly part-time, Howard Riefs, Sears corporate communications director, said in an email. Last October, the company announced plans to close the Kmart at 7530 S. Anthony Blvd., and it was gone in January. It

Coliseum Blvd., along with one in Decatur, were among the newest roster of store closings planned by Kmart parent, Sears Holdings Corp. The Haunted Cave took a real cave-cleaning. Now it’s the Hysterium Haunted Asylum. Brett Molitor bought the attraction in southwest Fort Wayne just before the 2013 Halloween season. “We opened with the crew that was there,” he said. And he ﬁnished the season in keeping with The Haunted Cave’s 15-year run. “After the season was over we evaluated what we had, and the season, and we decided that we needed to let Cave fade away and rebrand it with the Haunted Hysterium,” he said. “It had started out totally a cave theme and over the years they put some different rooms in,” he said. “But we’ve gone through and changed every room but one and one hall.” “Dumpster after dumpster went out the door, and we brought in some new stuff,” he said. The Hysterium Haunted Asylum is at 4410 Arden Drive, just off Engle Road. Hours are Thursdays and Sundays from 7-9:30 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. till midnight. The season ends Nov. 1. General admission is

Buy tickets at hysterium.com. “It looks like a doctor’s ofﬁce or hospital waiting room and that’s where people start their adventure,” Molitor said. “The medical staff and patients are interacting with them in the lobby setting.” Guests meet insane inmates and experience a series of nightmares, he said. “There is some gore involved,” he said. “We recommend ages 10 and above. The actors are trained to scare, and they’re trained to follow the story line.” Molitor will reduce the fright factor for kids for one night only — from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29. “We will have trunk or treat in the parking lot,” he said. “We will have a costume contest, and they can walk through the Hysterium with the lights on. We’ll let them do that.” And then the Hysterium opens to adults for the rest of the evening, from 7-9:30 p.m. Hysterium art director Tom Scheer worked down to the wire, replacing webbing and adding other special effects on the eve of the venue’s debut. The Haunted Cave, Scheer learned his craft working in the convention industry. In a quick tour through the winding halls, Scheer pointed out the many changes to the attraction. “It’s amazing what you can do with wood stain,” he said of the “blood” spatters across the walls and ﬂoors. “I’ve gotten away from the old-school haunted houses,” he said. “We’ve added detail and added light. We want to show off what we’ve done.” The moving room still moves, but Scheer said even familiar visitors should expect the unexpected. Tastes change, and so do attractions, owner

He has managed the Haunted Hotel in Huntington since 2003, and bought the business in 2006. The Huntington Jaycees started the Haunted Hotel in 1968. The attraction occupies the 13th ﬂoor of an old apartment building, he said. “It took on the Haunted Hotel name in 1999 because general haunted houses started changing to more elaborate story lines and themes,” he said. “We have a lot of 3D effects in there, and on

Sitting before Allen County voters on Nov. 4 is a decision on whether to restructure their county government — a decision that is stirring debate among residents about what deﬁnes fair, efﬁcient representation. The current structure of

Allen County’s government — a county commission board with three members to govern — dates back to 1824. At this time, the county’s population was 996, according to a panel discussion hosted by the New Haven Chamber of Commerce. The panel debated the pros and cons of the proposed reorganization. The change would

replace the three commissioners with a single county executive, and expand the county council from seven members to nine. In emphasizing his belief that the current structure is outdated, Matt Bell, speaking on behalf of the Regional Chamber of Northeast Indiana, noted that 1824 is the year the ﬁrst steam engine was

An Aboite Township church is taking a fitness lesson from the Bible. The public may benefit, too, from 2-4 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18, at The Chapel, 2505 W. Hamilton Road. Separate walks will accommodate various ability levels. Children’s games and fitness resources will be available. The Daniel Dash and Fitness Expo will cap a six-week series of health lessons taken from the book of Daniel. “Each week is something different, having to do with faith, food, fitness, friendship and focus, and we’re challenging people to grow in those areas to become healthier individuals,” said Becca Graf, the director of children’s ministries at The Chapel. Drawing from the Bible, she explained that Daniel was in captivity as a young man and was asked to be part of

the king’s court. “He was served food that his people and his culture deemed unhealthy to eat,” she said, “and so Daniel challenged his superior to allow him and and his three friends to eat nuts and vegetables and fruit only for 10 days, and at the end of the 10 days to compare him to the boys who were eating the king’s food, and their supervisor found that they were healthier and wiser than the rest.” Graf said the themes are discussed during the weekend services. “And people are also encouraged to join what we call a life group, eight to twelve people who meet at various times and places and go through the Bible study together based off the Daniel Plan,” she said. The goal is a more balanced, healthier individual, Graf said. All activities are free. She said the Danny Dash for children is a half-mile run. The ﬁrst 150 kids who register receive a free T-shirt. Registration begins at 2 p.m., and the

Street fair to aid three causes Three organizations are pooling their energy for Hoagland Street Fest 2014. Catch the games and markets Saturday, Oct. 18, in and near downtown Hoagland. The festival grew from idea to ﬁrm plans in just a few weeks, according to publicist Sally Holle of the Hoagland Area Advancement Association. “The HAAA, the Chamber of Commerce and the Hoagland Youth League are going together for this event,” she said. “Thrivent [Financial Greater Hoagland Group] is offering to match the funds, and they wanted a

street festival, so we’ve been working on it about three weeks now,” she said Sept. 24. “It’s going to be a really fun day. These three entities are working really hard to put on the street festival, and it seems like it’s being very well received,” she said. “We’re working on enough money for our parking lot because it’s falling apart,” Holle said. “The Chamber has been putting in sidewalks and trails. And the ball diamonds need improvements. So this is a really good chance for the three of us to come together and

help promote Hoagland and hopefully raise enough money where we can have a nice slice of the pie.” Jon Niemeyer represents the HAAA and the Chamber. Roy Sorg represents the youth league. “The adults are going to have a bicycle poker run around town on bicycles,” he said. “Or they can use golf carts, or they can walk it.” For details, visit hoaglandin.com.
