Without the use of chemicals, EcoVantage Lumber — located just east of St. Joe — treats wood to overcome issues of rot, warping and twisting that happens when wood is exposed to the elements. Chemicals not only do not improve the dimensional stability of wood, chemicals pose potential hazards to humans and the environment. EcoVantage was established in 2007 by partners Allen Holman, Carlyle Holman, John Schmucker and Mike Westrick. Brothers Allen and Carlyle grew up in farming. Allen is a real estate broker. Schmucker is a home builder. Westrick is an engi-

neer and inventor. Carlyle Holman is sales manager. Jason Holman is production manager and Jason’s wife Vicki is bookkeeper. and heat in large kilns from Finland to bake out all of the water, sugar and resins that cause wood to rot and become food for insects. While a relatively new process in the United States, it has been employed for years throughout Europe, Canada and Russia.

EcoPrem wood can be used for decking and railing, structural lumber, pergolas, arbors, fencing, docks and siding. It is interesting to note that while EcoVantage’s products are becoming more and more popular with guitar manufacturers to make the necks and fingerboards, Holman said. The outfield fencing at Eastside High School’s baseball and softball fields are made from EcoPrem wood, he noted. “We started out wanting to change the way pine decking was done by offering a non-chemical option to outdoor decking,” Jason Holman said. “Since then, we now focus more on the high-end decking made out of hardwoods or high-end pine, and we even do things with siding, flooring and musical instruments.”

Future Plans/ Expansions The expansion of our facility to a secondary location has significantly expanded our lifting and capacity capabilities, giving us the ability to provide more substantial products for our customers. We recently expanded into the former Salga building at 601 W. Water St. in Fremont, Indiana, which was built in 1980 and is about 64,000 square feet. We continue to reinvest in the company with new laser and machining technologies.
