Undermount sink can be pretty basic Q. We are looking to replace our kitchen this fall and have been looking at cabinetry, counters and sinks. I have been into the large stores and looked at all their standard stuff. SQUARE I really like the undermount sinks CORNERS and have decided that I want a Jeff Deahl stainless steel under mount sink in our new kitchen. I did some research on the Internet and there is a special sink that doesn’t have the edge that you feel under the counter at the sink edge. Do you know anything about this sink? Patricia of rural Butler A. Funny, I know just enough to be dangerous, and yes, I have seen this sink. They call it a top zero stainless steel sink and it has the smallest

reveal in the industry where the sink and counter meet on the underside. It is manufactured with a rigid edge that is recessed into a relief routed into the edge of the sink bowl hole in the counter; the only problem is this seam has to be exact. A standard undermount sink is pretty basic and is just what it says. The sink is mounted to the underside of the counter and secured. The meeting point can vary in size and yes, it is a point of concern. Some basics are that the hole in the counter is simply smaller than the sink bowl and depending on how much difference there is determines the edge that you can feel by running your fingers around the bottom of the counter. The closer and smoother that edge is, the nicer and more professional the results are. That intersection between the counter and the sink has then a silicone seal that needs to be cleaned and maintained. This seam, although out of sight, can be hard to clean, allowing crud and bacteria to build

up. This caulk joint can also deteriorate and must be properly maintained

Q. In our last house we had wood interior doors. In the summer they would expand and stick. Sometimes they would get so that the door would literally not close. My husband and I are planning on changing the interior doors of our existing home that has smooth hollow doors throughout. We want to replace them with six panel doors. If your older house had solid wood doors that had not been refinished in several years or painted, they would expand and contract depending on the season. Of course, in the summer when the humidity is high, lots of wood doors, cabinetry and even flooring can expand and contract. The key is generally how well the porous wood is sealed. Today the right products are manufactured with high standards for moisture content during manufacturing and are thoroughly sealed and finished before leaving the factory. These products from quality suppliers also have warranties and tight insulation/installation guidelines that typically include acclimation to the house environment prior to installation. If your doors have an expansion problem, be careful to consider that if you take it down and trim it so it fits in the winter time it might become loose and rattle in the frame. You can sometimes tighten the hinge screws and improve the operation, but generally the door needs to be removed and refinished to seal it from the impact of high moisture. Q. We have had two remodeling contractors out to look at our projects and one very knowledgeable fellow told us about the “Lead paint renovator rule.” I think that is what he called it. A. Attic access stairs are better than crawling through a hole in the ceiling off of a step ladder. But an insulated attic is not the best place to store anything. You really want at least R-49 or better in your attic and that takes up a lot of room. Any attempt to floor the attic or frame laterals to get the floor higher to allow more space is still leaving you under-insulated. Yes, all your junk can add insulation value but minimal. The best thing to have is an attic that is well insulated, 14” high worth, and have a pull-down stairs for access to inspect or perform repairs. But for the most part you’re only going to visit a couple times a year. We have found that if we build a dam of either 2” ridged insulation or plywood to form a curb around your stairs opening your insulation can be even and at full thickness to get the best R value. Then make a lid for over the curb with ridged foam with four or five glued layers that will fit inside the curb. Then install weather

stripping on the pull-down stairs lid so that when it’s closed it stops air leakage. Q. My husband and I have lived in our house for 46 years and have done pretty well keeping things up and well maintained. We are now getting older and are starting to think about making our home more elderly friendly. We recently had grab bars installed in our bathroom next to the toilet and in the shower. The neighborhood carpenter did it for us but I noticed that he used a plastic anchor into the drywall and attached the grab bar with three screws on each end of the grab bar. The bar seems plenty strong but is this plenty of strength for grab bars as we get older? Ester of Waterloo A. So here goes a lesson on Screws 101. Screws come in various sizes and strengths and all kinds of ratings and functions. Screws and fasteners have taken on a life of their own. screw all that stuff. Also improvements to wall anchors have made a big difference in options available depending on what you want to secure and its weight. Plastic or metal expansion anchors are only as strong as the material that’s holding them. If they are in drywall they are only as strong as the drywall. They are reasonably strong if you’re trying to hold something perpendicular with the screw but if you pull straight out there is very little strength. The next type of anchor is a screw type that screws into the material. Yes, these are rated about double the strength of the expansion anchor but the best hollow wall anchor is a molly bolt or toggle bolt that spreads the strength into a larger area. All that being said, I try to always get at least two screws on each end of the grab bars to go directly into wood stud or blocking and use a toggle bolt as a last resort, never a plastic anchor!

Steuben County Lakes Steuben County might best be known for its lakes, of which there are more than 100 (for tourism marketing purposes, the number 101 is used). The county’s lakes range in size from a few acres to 1,034 acres, which is Lake James, one of the state’s largest natural lakes. A majority of the lakes are in Jamestown and Pleasant townships. That’s where the Lake James chain is located, which includes Big and Little Otter lakes, Snow Lake, Lake James and Jimmerson Lake. Other major lakes in these two townships include Lake George, Barton Lake, Crooked Lake, Fox Lake and Loon Lake. Clear Lake, in the northeastern corner of the county, is considered to have some of the best water quality in the state, according to authorities with Indiana University and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Hamilton Lake, which is practically surrounded by the town of Hamilton in the southeastern corner of the county, has 802 surface acres. Lake Gage, a round, kettle-shaped lake near Orland, is about 332 acres and like Clear Lake, has extremely high water quality.

With all of the lakes along with Pigeon River, Fish Creek and Fawn River (Crooked Creek) it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Steuben County has a lot of water. In fact, about 9 percent of the county’s surface acreage is water. Some of the county’s lakes are highly developed, such as Lake James and Crooked Lake. Crooked Lake was one of the earliest in the county to be developed for recreational use. There once were passenger trains that carried visitors to Crooked Lake and Lake James. Many of the early cottages on county lakes have either been converted to year-round use or have been knocked down and replaced with permanent homes, or modern second homes. A study sponsored by the Steuben County Community Foundation to inventory historic structures in Steuben County was buoyed upward due to the many older cottages on some of the lakes. Lake James’ hilly, wooded shoreline is dotted with lake cottages and homes. However, about one-fourth of the natural shoreline of James, in Pokagon State Park, remains much as it was when it was created by the glaciers. Pokagon’s shoreline extends to its northern boundary on Snow

Lake. There, a steep, tree-covered hill drops off sharply to the water’s edge. Some of the county’s lakes remain natural wonders, with little encroachment by humans. Those include the Seven Sisters Lakes, near Pokagon State Park, where a nature preserve, privately-owned wetlands and Trine State Recreation Area surround the shoreline. The Seven Sisters, the largest of which is Gentian Lake, are some of the most pristine lakes in the Midwest. Also, there’s Walters Lake, near Fremont. There are only two access points, and both are privately owned. If you can get there, Walters Lake produces some of the best pan fishing around. Somewhat more accessible is Loon Lake, west of Angola. Much of Loon Lake is preserved by the Nature Conservancy, a private, international land conservation group. Loon Lake is home to many different species of rare and endangered plants and wildflowers, including carnivorous plants. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources maintains a fish hatchery along the Fawn River in Orland. There, DNR Fish and Wildlife biologists raise fish for stocking in Indiana lakes and also use the facility as a base from which to conduct research on fish and fisheries in Indiana.
