We would like to combine two rooms for a master suite, turn another bedroom into an office, add an addition of three bedrooms with a basement and bathroom. So in the end it would be a bedroom; den/office; three-bath ranch on partial basement. Would adding the extra space affect the old septic system, requiring a new septic system? So if the number of bedrooms doesn’t increase by your addition and rearrangement you should be OK. If you’re converting a bedroom to a den the closet would probably need to be removed or installation of a set of French doors so its function can’t typically be a bedroom. In simpler times, container gardening was small-scale landscaping using flowering annuals. Enjoy their color for one season and go with something new the next. But shifts toward food production and mixed container planting — perennials with annuals — have changed all that, creating the need for over-wintering. “Many more people have limited or no garden space . (and) as a result are doing their food gardening in containers,” said Marianne Ophardt, an extension horticulturist with Washington State University’s Benton County office. “Cultivating small (perennial) fruit like raspberries, strawberries and blueberries is one way for these gardeners to grow their own fruit, and it’s fun.” Ignore the rules about hardiness zones if you’re trying to over-winter perennials in pots. Cozying up in a favorite sweater is one of the distinct pleasures of autumn. This fall, designers and retailers are stitching up sweater motifs on an array of home décor. So while you’re wrapping yourself in a big, soft cardigan, you can also grace your space with a dollop of knitted comfort. Hannah Millman, executive editorial director of crafts for Martha Stewart Living, says knitwear is a trend with near-universal appeal. She suggests some do-it-yourself projects. “Almost everyone has a memory of a sweater that makes them feel good. What’s so great about repurposing one of your own is that you get to keep it and enjoy it,” she says. “And if you’ve found one at a market that someone may have knit back in the ’40s, you can give it the opportunity to be loved again by making it into something new.” One of Millman’s favorite ways to

reuse sweaters: Collect a bunch of creamyhued ones, in one type of knit or perhaps several, and cut them up to make a blanket, pillow or rug. You’ll find project ideas and instructions at Marthastewart.com as well as Countryliving.com, where there are also how-tos for lamps, bowls and sconces. “Creating a little story on pillows using pieces of old sweaters is a big trend,” she says. Look for pieces in gradations of color — perhaps pale pink to deep cherry, or sky blue to indigo. Or search tag sales and thrift stores for sweaters with nature motifs to create a group of woodland pillows. Those dreadful Christmas sweaters of old can be transformed into new Christmas stockings; other heavily patterned and colorful sweaters make great rugs. Millman suggests using a rotary cutter and anchoring the edges of a loose knit with masking tape while cutting, to reduce fraying. She also advises washing any woolens in hot soapy water in case there are moths. If you then machine-dry the sweater, you’ll end up with a “felted” material, popular in crafting circles, where the fibers smush together. If you line-dry the garment, the

Clover comeback? ‘Bee lawns’ gaining favor THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Turf grass may be an attractive groundcover for homeowners but it doesn’t hold much appeal for pollinators. Add some broadleaf plants with flowers to the mix, however, and it’s a different story: great forage for the birds and the bees. Lower maintenance, too. “Bee lawns aren’t 100 percent flowers. They have some grass included,” said Mary Meyer, an extension horticulturist and professor with the University of Minnesota. “While bees don’t use grass, humans do. Most flowers, if you start walking on them, will die. Clover will tolerate a bit of foot traffic.” Nitrogen-rich Dutch white clover generally is considered the best companion to cool-season lawn grasses when the objective is attracting pollinators, said Mace Vaughan, pollinator program director for The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in Portland, Oregon. “You can mow it and keep it relatively tame in a lawn, and bees love it,” Vaughan said. “The good thing about Dutch white clover is that it is good (to grow) across most of the U.S.” There was a time when many turf seed

mixes included clover. Then came the rise of lawn purity: Yards were designed to look like the manicured greens on a golf course. All grass. No broadleaf plants. These formalized landscapes were attractive but contained little food value for foraging honeybees. Now that clean lawn ethic is giving way to herb and vegetable gardens, a desire for minimal yard maintenance and concerns about steep declines in pollinating insects. People are opting for smaller lawns, blended lawns or no lawns. “The trend is urban meadows, where homeowners take out their lawns and replace them with diverse wildflowers that can get tall and rangy at the end of the season,” Vaughan said. “But a nicely mown border around the outside keeps them looking tidy. Add a sign and people know you’re doing it on purpose. Mow in the fall and the whole lawn is cleaned up nicely.” Other flowering broadleaf plants include dandelions (which bloom early when little else is flowering), lamium (shade-tolerant) and thyme. Some property owners convert less visible sections of their yards into bio-di-

verse bee lawns. “Reserve some chunks,” Meyer said. “Devote your back lawn to a bee lawn and leave your front lawn traditional turf — the part that your neighbors and passing traffic see.” “For people who still want that green carpet look, try it with clover,” Meyer said. Are flowering broadleafs invasive weeds or beneficial grass companions? It depends on your aesthetics. But no matter how they’re viewed, they require less care and less fertilizing, and are more resilient to drought and pests than traditional turf grass. “I’ve seen some beautiful mats of thyme that are mowed and attract many, many bees,” Vaughan said. “Small varieties of yarrow are OK, but don’t attract a lot of bees. Other pollinators come to the yarrow.” University of Minnesota researchers are trying to come up with pollinator lawn-seed combinations that use native plant species — low-growing, non-invasive varieties that can take a lot of abuse. “That’s a heavy order,” Meyer said, “but they’re doing trials. Next year they’ll be planting demo plants to see how they flower and survive.”

Outdoor decorating for fall THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Homes in the northern U.S. are treated to a measure of effortless outdoor decorating for fall: Nature does most of the work by turning the trees a vivid palette of reds, oranges and golds. Add a pumpkin or two on the doorstep and the look is complete. In the rest of the country, it takes a bit more creativity to add the season’s colors and textures to the exterior of a home. Southern California designer Betsy Burnham says poorly done fall decorating can look out of place in warmer climates. And as Halloween decorating has become increasingly popular, many homeowners aiming for a festive fall look go overboard with big decorations and harsh shades of orange. But with a light touch and some strategic choices, homes anywhere can be made more attractive through the beauty of the season. Here, Burnham and two other designers — Brian Patrick Flynn of the Flynnside Out design blog and Lee Kleinhelter, owner of the Pieces design store in Atlanta — offer advice on doing outdoor fall decorating right.

Choose the right shades All three designers are fans of white gourds and white pumpkins. “We use them every year one way or another,” Kleinhelter says. “Grouping them on table settings or outside in multiples by the door is an easy arrangement.” You can decorate with gourds and pumpkins without adding “that crazy pumpkin orange” to your home’s exterior, Burnham says. Instead, pick other shades of orange and yellow that feel seasonal but aren’t quite so bright.

Cyclamen kin are dainty but hardy BY LEE REICH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

For the past few weeks, dainty pink or white butterflies have been hovering above the bare soil in some of my clay flowerpots. They’re not really butterflies, actually: They are cyclamen blossoms held aloft on thin flower stalks. These are not the cyclamens you typically find offered in florist shops, those plants with bold flowers and lush foliage. My cyclamens are among the few species of so-called “hardy” cyclamens (Cyclamen hederifolium, for example). They differ from florists’ cyclamens not only in their diminutive leaves and flowers but also in their ability to live outdoors year round, even in cold climates. My cyclamen plants are still leafless, the flowers being their first sign of life as they awaken from their summer dormancy. These blossoms will hover in place for weeks to come.

The show goes on Even after the blossoms finally fade and drop, the show will not be over. Soon to begin is the leafy show. The leaves

are heart-shaped, but rounded rather than pointed at the end, with silvery mottling painted over the dark green background. The silvery design differs from one plant to the next. The leaves last for weeks, perhaps all winter if temperatures are not too frigid. So there’s really no time of year when the plant is unattractive. It’s just that in summer, when the plants go dormant, the plant has nothing at all to show — no leaves or flowers. Hardy cyclamens are as easy to grow as florists’ cyclamens and need pretty much the same conditions: perfectly drained soil and shallow planting. Tubers should sit with their tops just slightly below soil level. My plants have flowered indoors at east windows and outdoors on the shaded, north side of the house.

Getting started Hardy cyclamens are generally available from specialist nurseries (such as Sunfarms, www.sunfarm.com), but once you have some plants, new ones are easy enough to propagate. Sometime after bloom, surely while the plants are dormant, you’ll note

seed capsules, each about the size of a small marble, lying on the soil surface. These seed capsules, like the flowers, are still tethered to the soil, this time by stalks now coiled like springs. The seeds would likely self-sow, but to multiply your holdings more deliberately, pop the seeds out of the dry capsules. Books and seed catalogs offer elaborate instructions for germinating cyclamen seeds, detailing planting depth as well as sequential requirements for both warm and cool temperatures. I’ve followed such directives and gotten the seeds to germinate. Then again, I’ve also just sowed the seeds shallowly in pots, kept the soil moist and waited — eventually they seem to germinate no matter what you do. What is important is to keep the young seedlings growing continuously through their first year. They’re not old enough for their summer dormancy until their second year, at which time they generally start to flower. You may wonder why, if I’m growing hardy cyclamens, they are in flowerpots rather than in the ground with other hardy plants.

Prepare amaryllis for a Christmastime show THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Ready, set, go. Just as soon as you have new amaryllis bulbs, pot them up, and in a few months the spectacular, colorful trumpets will unfold. (Technically, what are commonly called “amaryllis” are really species of hippeastrum.) With luck, or if the bulbs were from South Africa, Brazil or greenhouses in Israel, you’ll have blooms by Christmastime. That’s because it’s spring in the southern hemisphere, and effectively so in Israeli greenhouses. Getting any amaryllis bulb in bloom a little later in winter is easy, but again, get the bulb ready now. And that’s not hard, because most of what’s needed is neglect.

Keep cool Amaryllis bulbs flower best and most quickly after experiencing a cool period at the end of summer. So find a location where temperatures remain below 60 degrees but above freezing, such as in an unheated basement or garage, perhaps even outside for awhile, depending on your climate. This cool period sets the stage for the flower buds, already formed within the bulbs, to open. New bulbs that come from

Holland may have already spent some time in refrigerated storage or transit. During their cool period, the plants won’t need any water at all. Contrary to myth, drying down the foliage by withholding water is not necessary before the plants can flower; withholding water does slow or stop new leaf growth, but those old leaves pretty much hang on, green. If you find the leaves unsightly or in the way, just cut them off.

These dwarf amaryllises are so forgiving that you might even have to hold them to near-freezing temperatures just to keep them from flowering prematurely.

Preparing for next year After blossoms have come and gone, it’s time again to start preparing an amaryllis for the following winter’s blooms. Those flowers unfold from buds that form deep within the bulbs during spring and summer, so the better the growth during the warm months, the better the flowers the next winter. Your reward is one flower bud for every four to six leaves your bulb grows. Spur leaf growth with plenty of water, warmth, fertilizer and light. Repot the bulb if it’s getting cramped in its pot; tease some of the old soil away from the outside of the root ball, then pack the plant into a larger pot with fresh potting soil. An amaryllis bulb is prone to rotting, so should be set with only its bottom half in the soil, and the potting soil should be well-drained. A bulb can go for three or four years without repotting so long as there is an inch or so of space between the bulb and the rim of the pot. When warm weather reliably settles in come

Rest period is over After about eight weeks of cool neglect, the bulb is refreshed. When you want flowers, offer warmth, light and water. The plant needs only a bit of water to get started growing, then increasing amounts once growth proceeds in earnest. Blossoms will unfold within four to five weeks at temperatures hovering around 70 degrees, more quickly at warmer temperatures and more slowly at cooler ones. Playing around with the amount of cooling you give a particular variety of amaryllis sometimes influences whether flower stalks appear before or with new foliage. And some amaryllises — most notably the dainty Gracilis types — are especially easy to bring into earlier bloom.
