Pizza eating contestants set to chow down LIGONIER — See who claims the title of “king of the pizza eaters” at the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival’s pizza eating contest, which will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. The contest is for individuals ages 10 and up. Rules are: for ages 10-16, eat one 12-inch pizza as quickly as possible; for ages 17 and older, eat one 14-inch pizza as quickly as possible. The fastest time in both age groups wins. The entry fee is $5 per person, and the registration deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. Entry forms and registration fees can be turned in to the event’s sponsor, Cavin Street Pizzeria, at 314 S. Cavin Street. For more information, call Anna at 215-7847.

Welcome to the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival LIGONIER — This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival. Dating back to the days following World War II, Ligonier’s festivals and holidays were observed as a time for parades, fireworks, carnivals, hot-air balloons, family gatherings and great celebrations of local history. As servicemen returned to Ligonier at the close of World War II, the need for celebration and recollection of Ligonier’s history was revived in the form of an annual Labor Day festival that drew together the workers from factories, farms and stores. This annual festival was given the name Strawberry Valley Days, reflective of the days past when early settlers found bountiful patches of strawberries growing along
the Elkhart River. Attracted by the beauty of the river and the succulent berries, pioneers established a small settlement that would later grow into the Ligonier as we now know it. In 1992, the name of the festival was changed to the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival so that our community could take pride in one of the major products produced in Noble County. Deadline for grand parade entries is Sept. 3 LIGONIER — The 2016 Ligonier Marshmallow Festival is scheduled for Sept. 2-5. This event promises lots of fun, entertainment, activities, rides, food and much more. The grand parade will be on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. This year’s theme is “25 Years of Marshmallow Madness.” According to festival organizers, floats will be judged accordingly and winners will receive cash prizes for: • Best Use of Theme Award; • Best Organization Award; • Grand Marshal’s Choice Award; and • Other category awards will be given out, including antique auto, antique tractor, horse and pony and walking unit. The parade lineup will start promptly at noon on Grand Street. Parade entries should enter from Lincolnway West. Since it is necessary to prepare a lineup

No candy should be thrown from vehicles in order to avoid children running into the street. Instead, people may walk along the curb and hand out candy. The parade committee will choose judges, and their decisions will be final, according to festival organizers. Commercial floats will be considered business and industry. Neighborhood floats will be judged as organizational. Parade entries do not have to use the theme, but it is encouraged. Sponsored by the Ligonier Lions Club, the event will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, with all proceeds going to the Ligonier Lions West Noble Scholarship Fund. If participants register and pay by Monday, Aug. 29, the cost is $25 per team. If registration takes place after that date, the cost increases to $35. Cash prizes will be given out for winners. Enter your marshmallow-themed recipe in bake-off competition LIGONIER — Calling all cooks! You are invited to enter the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival’s Marshmallow Bake-Off! The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Ligonier Fire Department (downtown Ligonier at the heart of the festival grounds.) Bring entries after 11:30 a.m. but before 11:59 a.m. Judging begins at noon. Contest rules are you can enter most anything, but you have to use marshmallows or marshmallow creme in some part of it. Area fire departments will compete in water ball fight LIGONIER — Area fire departments will compete in the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival’s water ball fights to see who is the best at handling the water hose. Water ball fights will begin at noon Sunday, Sept. 4, at Pettit Memorial Park.
Parking at the park will be closed to the public from 8 a.m. Sept. 4 until after the water ball contest is over and firefighters have cleared the parking lot. For more information, or to register a fire department for the competition, contact Mike White at 221-2819.
Kiddie contest voting benefits food pantry LIGONIER — Voting for the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival Kiddie King and Queen Contest is ongoing to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. All of the proceeds collected through the contest will be donated to the West Noble Food Pantry. Contestants must be from West Noble Primary School and must be enrolled in the
2016-2017 school year. Voting will be based on the number of cash votes collected by the contestants. The boy and girl contestants with the most votes at 4 p.m. Sept. 2 will be designated the winners. Only cash votes will county.
