Ober Elementary School in Garrett will be holding a Back to School Pep Rally on Thursday, Aug. 8 in the Bateman Gym from 5:30-6 p.m. Parent-teacher meetings will be held following the pep rally. Parents who have children in grades K-2 will meet in their children’s classrooms from 6:15-6:45 p.m. Parents who have children in grades 3-5 will meet in their children’s classrooms from 6:45-7:15 p.m. While parents are attending the meeting, children will be entertained by several Ober staff members. Immediately following the grades 3-5 parent-teacher meeting, a presentation, “Personalized Learning at J,E, Ober” will be shown in the Performing Arts Center. All parents are encouraged to attend.

GARRETT — Garrett neighborhoods are invited to join with thousands nationwide to celebrate the 30th National Night Out crime and drug prevention event on Tuesday. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the City of Garrett. More than 15,700 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world are expected to participate this year. From 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, Garrett residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. The Garrett Police Department invites neighborhoods to host events such as block parties and cookouts, visits from the police, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies. People may contact the Garrett Police Department with any questions at 357-5151 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

By Sue Carpenter suec@kpcnews.net GARRETT — Molly Wilhelm won the title of Miss Garrett 2013 at the conclusion of a three-hour pageant Saturday night in the Performing Arts Center. Miss Garrett 2012, Shai Greuter placed the crown on the Garrett senior’s head. Wilhelm then took her first walk across the stage as the 52nd Miss Garrett to a standing ovation from the audience. She was presented a bouquet of purple silk roses, a trophy and gifts from many local businesses and organizations as the winner of the pageant. Wilhelm performed a dance to “On the Floor” by Jennifer Lopez during the talent portion of the judging, wearing a shimmery gold and black dance costume. She wore a pale pink strapless gown with rhinestone trim and train for the evening gown competition. The new Miss Garrett is the daughter of Tom and Teresa Wilhelm. She enjoys cheerleading, dance, 4-H, playing tennis and volunteering at the food bank. She plans to attend graduate college, attend graduate school and eventually obtain a doctorate degree Wilhelm was sponsored by The Hair Shed. Michaela Scherer was named Miss Garrett First Runner-up. She was presented a trophy by last year’s first runner-up, McKenzie Conn. Scherer performed a jazz dance to “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars, wearing a sparkly red halter top and black boy shorts for her talent. She wore a bright pink strapless gown with sequins on the bodice for the evening gown portion of the program. She is the daughter of Doug and Beth Scherer and was sponsored by Lila’s Nail Spa. West Nile virus found in county AUBURN — This summer’s first sign of West Nile virus in DeKalb County has arrived, the DeKalb County Health Department said Friday. A sample pool of mosquitoes collected July 17 in the county by the Indiana State Department of Health has tested positive for the virus, said Bernie Sukala, the county’s environmental health specialist. Sukala said mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus tend to lay their eggs in ditches and catchbasins with high organic matter, septic system discharge sites, unused wading and swimming pools,

vehicle tires and other containers of water. Most people — about 80 percent — of people who are bitten by infected mosquitoes will have little or no symptoms, Sukala said. More than 19 percent will experience a relatively mild illness or fever. Fewer than 1 percent will be susceptible to one of the more severe forms of the disease, which may result in encephalitis — an inflammation of the brain — or meningitis, an inflammation of the tissues that cover the brain and spinal cord. Animals also can be infected with West Nile virus. Sukala said to avoid being bitten

by mosquitoes, people should avoid heavily wooded areas or tall weeds, if possible. For people who must be outside during the periods from dusk to dawn, or in heavily shaded areas, Sukala offered these tips: • Make sure to use an effective mosquito repellent. • Make sure all windows and doors have screens that are in good repair. • Frequently empty containers of water around residences. • Make sure any ponds on a property contain fish or frogs that eat mosquito larvae. • Keep tall weeds and overgrown

areas to a minimum. • Place any tires without rims so that they cannot collect water, or dispose of them properly. Sukala said the Indiana State Department of Health no longer accepts birds for testing related to West Nile virus. Instead, the department now sets up sample sites in each county to collect mosquitoes for testing. Its site in DeKalb County tested positive, indicating that the virus is active in the area. Pianos on the Square program begins this week Four pianos installed in Garrett BY KATHRYN BASSETT kbassett@kpcmedia.com AUBURN — From curious children to talented musicians, the Auburn Arts Commission, Inc., invites anyone and everyone to tickle the ivories on the pianos set out across DeKalb County as part of Pianos on the Square. The free, interactive, outdoor event runs through Sept. 15 and features decorated pianos all over Auburn, Butler, Waterloo and Garrett. Clubs, organizations and individuals have decorated the pianos and the public is encouraged to play them. Pianos on the Square also will present free outdoor concerts and recitals, films, a musical, play reading and lecture in Auburn. Additional events will be held in Butler, Garrett and Waterloo. “Some are done. Some are started. Some are not started yet,” said Nina Bennett who has coordinated the decorating of the Auburn pianos. “Decorating could continue through the summer and be progressive over six weeks.” A baby grand piano takes center stage on the west side of the DeKalb County Courthouse. The piano, which was donated for the exhibit by the Auburn Presbyterian Church, will be decorated Sue Carpenter by the nonprofit Auburn revitalization group ADAC, with Auburn’s revitalization as the theme. Heftys to lead 2013-2014 United Way campaign The United Way of DeKalb County has announced that the Hefty family will be its 2013-2014 campaign chairs. David and Stacy Hefty of Hefty Wealth Partners, along with their four children, Sydney, 10, Matthias, 8, Isaiah, 6, and Isaac, 2, are taking on the challenge of bringing together a team of community volunteers to raise funds to support 21 partner agencies and many other nonprofit programs in DeKalb County. The Heftys will host a free kickoff concert with the popular local band Choice at the DeKalb Outdoor Theater on Friday. DeWald Northeast Dental Group is sponsoring the event. Crash injures 3-year-old By Matt Getts GARRETT — A Hudson woman’s blood-alcohol level allegedly was more than twice the legal limit when she crashed her car into a parked vehicle Wednesday night, seriously injuring her daughter, Tarlton police said. Erin Tarlton, 23, of the 7400 block of South C.R. 800W, was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury. Tarlton’s 3-year-old daughter was seriously injured in the crash, said Garrett Police Chief Keith Hefner. Another of Tarlton’s children, a 5-year-old, was in the vehicle but uninjured. Hefner declined to give specifics about the 3-year-old’s injuries, but said the girl had surgery late Wednesday. A preliminary crash report did not indicate whether the children were restrained properly at the time of the crash. A news release from the Garrett Police Department said police responded shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday to a crash of two vehicles in the 300 block of South Hamsher Street. Police said Tarlton was driving a 2003 Chrysler when it struck a parked vehicle. The airbags on the Chrysler deployed, Hefner said. Tarlton was treated for abrasions at DeKalb Health hospital in Auburn before being transported to the jail. Hefner said Tarlton’s blood-alcohol level after the crash was 0.17 percent. The legal limit in Indiana is 0.08 percent. “If you’re going to start drinking and you have two little kids, you better not be driving,” Hefner said. The father of the children was notified, Hefner said, as was the DeKalb County Department of Child Service

children and families. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a new or gently used books for children ages birth to 3. The books will be distributed to children throughout the county who are participating in one of the United Way funded programs. David and Stacy Hefty said they have enjoyed volunteering on several DeKalb County nonprofit boards over the past 14 years. However, as their family grew, they found it more and more difficult to dedicate time away from the family for these causes. “That is why it was an easy decision to chair this year’s United Way campaign when offered to do so, as a family,” Stacy Hefty said. The United Way directly benefits many of the groups the Heftys have worked with in the past, and they said it is a great way to introduce the needs

of the local community to their children. “We are incredibly excited with this new direction of our annual campaign,” said Julie Hill-Lauer, United Way executive director. “Our board views this as an opportunity to reach out to families with young children and help them see how easy it is to make time to volunteer and help others in their community.” Campaign volunteers working under the Heftys direction will be reaching out to families in every community of the county, encouraging them to look for ways to get involved with United Way and with other nonprofits in DeKalb County, the agency said. Seven sentenced in court hearings AUBURN — Judge Kevin Wallace sentenced seven people for criminal offenses during hearings in DeKalb Superior Court I Friday. • Michelle Webb of Indianapolis was fined $75 and must pay court costs for driving while suspended, a Class A misdemeanor. Her driving license was suspended for 90 days.

• Amanda Jacobs of the 100 block of Ridgedale Drive, Garrett, received a 60-day suspended sentence and one year of probation for conversion, a Class A misdemeanor. She was fined $1 and must pay court costs. • Logan DePew of the 100 block of West Clark Street, Garrett, received a 90-day suspended sentence and one year of probation for criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor. He was fined $1 and must pay

court costs. Four people were placed on the judgment withheld program for being minors consuming alcohol. If they successfully complete one year of probation, their charges will be dismissed. Architects report progress on high school addition in 1963 Architects, contractors and subcontractors presented a progress report on a new addition to the high school in August of 1963 for Superintendent Charles to LOOKING Puff review. The remaining part of the building consisting of a home economics department, music rooms, cafeteria and conventional classrooms would not be done before December, according to the report. A.J. Foyt signed up to drive a Plymouth in the 100-mile USAC stock car race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in September. Foyt also entered the 11th annual Hoosier Hundred at the same track later in the month. “Captain Sinbad” was on the big screen at the Auburn-Garrett Drive-In staring Guy Williams. Elvis would be singing and swinging in “It Happened at the Worlds Fair” later in the

week. A major construction project to widen Randolph Street was set to begin in early August. A Pendleton contractor won the bid for the $170,000 project from city limit to city limit, but revealed the three downtown blocks would not be included in the business district. According to a federal survey, the traffic pattern in the three blocks was not heavy enough to warrant the cost of widening. The project’s cost was split between the state and federal governments. Members of the DeKalb County Council accepted a recommendation by the aviation commission for a 3 percent tax levy in the 1964 county budget to initiate financing of the Auburn-Garrett Airport south of Auburn. A $175,000 bond issue was accepted by the council to finance the project. Garrett authorities reported a slow down in law violations in July with only eight arrests made in the 31-day period, according to Chief Chet Bartels.

25 years ago Eleven Garrett High School seniors competed in the annual Miss Garrett Pageant in 1988. Jamie Witherspoon was named the winner of the pageant held in the J.E. Ober Auditorium.

Witherspoon played “Via Dolorsa” on the piano for her talent. Shari Thrush was first runner-up and Michelle Anderson captured the non-finalist talent award for her tap dance to “Le Jazz Hot.” Kyle Leon and Jamie Fritz were named Little Prince and Princess for the 1988 Garrett Days celebration in August. Former Garrett resident Dan Miller, a talk show host for Nashville Network, was emcee for the weekend. Bike parade winners were Jayma Smith, Ginger and Holly Brewer and Josh Smith. Eleanor Teders and Jim Herzer judged the 19 pies entered in the baking contest. Linda Kapp’s mixed nut pie was overall winner of the event. Six apartments in the Oak Tree Apartment located at Warfield and Hamsher streets were nearly ready for occupancy in August 1988. The remaining six would be ready by the end of September. A recycling expert from Columbia City came before the Common Council to talk about the problems Indiana faces with landfills. A representative from the city’s refuse hauler was also on hand to report the county landfill would probably close by the end of the year and then garbage would have to be hauled to Fort Wayne.

ANGOLA — Arthur L. Myers of Angola peacefully expired on Aug. 3, 2013 at his Lake Gage home, surrounded by family. Art was born Feb. 21, 1932 to the late Orlo and Myrtle (Hevel) Myers of Altona, Ind. A graduate of Garrett High School, he joined the Navy in 1951 and served four years aboard the USS Waccamaw. Arthur married Sue Ann (Rowe) Myers, his wife of 61 years, on June 6, 1952. Following his honorable discharge, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Ball State University in 1959 and his Master of Science degree in elementary administration from Ball State in 1961. He began his teaching career at Price Elementary School in Fort Wayne. He also taught at Justin Study School, served as summer school principal at the James Smart School for several years, and served as principal of Rudisill Elementary School. He finished his career in education as principal of Maplewood Elementary and retired in 1992. After retirement from FWCS, Art and Sue moved to their paradise on earth at Lake Gage, Angola. Art became very active as a Cameron Hospital volunteer and met many new friends there. He recently received a certificate honoring his many hours of service to the Auxiliary. His children include Timothy (Debbie) Myers of Perryville, Md., and Susan (Tim) Scheidt of Warsaw. Papa is also survived by grandchildren Angela (Preston) Miller of Newark, DE, Ashley (Carson) McAbee of Monterey, Calif., Sarah Scheidt of Warsaw, and Andrew Scheidt of Warsaw; and great-grandchildren Preston and Sam Miller, all of whom he took delight in and kept him on his toes. Survivors also include sisters Annabelle Deuitch, and Barbara Strock both of Garrett. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, John, Jack and Jim. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at the Angola United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Tim Terrell officiating. There will be no prior visitation. The family will greet those attending immediately following the memorial service in the gathering room of the church. Interment will take place at Lake Gage Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Steuben County Lakes Council or Cameron Memorial Community Hospital Hospice and Swing Bed Programs. H.E. James is survived by two sons and a daughter, Jerry (Vicky) Fike of Daytona Beach, Fla., and James C. “Bud” (Paula) Fike of Garrett, and Deborah (Denny) Dallas of Garrett; a sister, Beverly Thurman of Garrett; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Elva Fike; wife, Dorothy Fike; three brothers, Harold Fike, Arthur Fike Jr. and Charles Fike; and a sister: Edna Schulthess. GARRETT — Lloyd E. Myers, 84, of Auburn, and formerly of Garrett, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 28, 1929 in Mr. Myers Garrett to Clarence A. and E. Madeline (Todd) Myers. He married Carol J. Rutter on Dec. 7, 1957, in Deshler, Ohio, and she died Jan. 3, 1993. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked as an engineer on the B & O Railroad for more than 40 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Garrett Masonic Lodge and the Garrett Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his daughter, Sue (Robert) Church of Marshfield, Wis.; his son, Todd Myers of Waterloo; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence A. and E. Madeline Myers; his wife, Carol J. Myers; a brother, William Myers; and a grandson. Services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Thomas Funeral Home, Garrett, with Rev. William Haworth officiating. Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at funeral home. Kruse joins Auctioneers Hall of Fame INDIANAPOLIS — State Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, was inducted into the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame recently during the association’s 2013 conference in Indianapolis. “The NAA Hall of Fame highlights those individuals who have made excellent contributions to the auction industry, but also made excellent contributions to the National Auctioneers Association. Pageant from Page 1 Katie Hunkler won the title of Miss Garrett Second Runner-up. Toree Brown, last year’s winner, presented her with a trophy. Hunkler is the daughter of Mark and Rhonda Hunkler and was sponsored by Tri Kappa Sorority. She wore a white gown with illusion bodice and open back for the evening gown competition. She performed a lively dance and played the drums to James Brown’s “I Feel Good” for her talent.

Caption awards Caption awards were presented in the shorts, evening gown and talent competitions and the Precious Moments Award was also named. Olivia Ruble won the talent award title. She sang “Cups” from the film “Pitch Perfect” sitting on the floor in front of the stage using a pink plastic cup for percussion. Ruble is the daughter of Scott and Carmen Ruble. She wore a pale blue strapless gown with embroidered bodice and train. Grueter presented her with the award. Kiersten Jarnigan won the evening gown award wearing a bright turquoise strapless gown with rhinestone trim at the waist and full skirt. Last year’s winner, Jessica Scalici presented her with a trophy. Jarnigan is the daughter of Michael and Jamie Jarnigan and was sponsored by Hixson Sand & Gravel. She sang, “Someone’s Watching Over Me” for her talent. Alyssa Patterson was named winner in the shorts category. She performed a tap dance to “There’s a Reason” for her talent. Patterson wore a strapless black gown with calypso skirt and embroidered train for the evening gown portion of the pageant. Brittini March, last year’s winner, presented her with a trophy. Patterson is the daughter of Brian and Barb Patterson and was sponsored by Tireville. Jacquelyne Zahner was presented the Precious Moments award. She is the daughter of Mona and Craig Zahner and sponsored by the Garrett Lions Club. She performed a flute solo to “Under the Sea” dressed in a green mermaid gown and bright red wig for her talent. She wore a strapless coral

gown with full skirt for the evening gown portion of the pageant. Last years winner, Cassandra Grossman, presented the award. Zahner was also presented the People’s Choice Award voted on by the audience at a penny-pervote.

Pageant contestants Fifteen Garrett High School seniors participated in the 52nd annual pageant. A panel of three judges scored the contestants on talent, evening gown and fitness during the evening pageant. A personal interview earlier in the day comprised 35 percent of the overall scoring. Also competing Saturday were: • Bridget Chisholm, daughter of John Max and Katie Boardman and Ed Chisholm, She was sponsored by Garrett State Bank and recited a sonnet for her talent. • Alexis Obenauer, daughter of Wayne and Randi Wells. Her sponsor was the Garrett Eagles. She performed a contemporary dance for her talent. • MacKenzie Davis, daughter of Tom and Heather Davis. Garrett American Legion Auxiliary was her sponsor. She sang “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” for her talent. • Katelynn Butler, daughter of Lissa Butler. Her sponsor was Dr. Mann Family Dentistry. She painted on canvas for her talent. • Jennifer Cleveland, daughter of Steve and Lana Cleveland. Her sponsor was MJS Apparel. Mardi Gras is theme for the evening The pageant stage provided a masquerade backdrop for the evening complete with glittery masks and a brightly colored café scene. The contestants opened the evening with a dance number to “Masquerade” wearing glittery teal and white tops with black leggings. Cathy Ann Dancers joined the contestants for the opening song. For the shorts competition, the girls wore purple T-shirts with white shorts and danced to “That’s What Makes You Beautiful.” The contestants joined together to sing “Forever Young” before the pageant results were announced. Judges for the pageant were Johnell Keely of Naperville; Scott Frazier, a professional chorographer; and Elaine Lengacher of Leo, whose has been involved in area and state pageants for a number of years.

Jack Houser handled the lighting and Kelly Gomes was in charge of sound. Bob Novy returned as the pageant’s master of ceremonies this year, marking his 19th appearance. Red Cross plans local blood drives The American Red Cross has scheduled two blood donation drives in DeKalb County: • Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Commons at DeKalb High School , 3424 C.R. 427 in Waterloo. This is a Bleed for the Band blood drive. • Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the American Legion post, 118 N. Broadway, Butler. While all blood types are needed, Type O is in highest demand because it is the only type that be transfused

to patients in other blood groups such as A, B and AB. Hospitals also use Type O-negative blood in most emergency trauma cases when a patient’s blood type is not known. The Red Cross is encouraging Type O donors to schedule and keep appointments, or to optimize their donations by making double red cell donations. Donors who meet certain criteria may be eligible to safely donate two units of red cells through the automated donation process.

Decorations also include an artist rendering of possible future improvements at Auburn’s Sixth and Main street. The Auburn Garden Club takes credit for the cheery piano located among the plants and flowers in Courtyard Park. As bright as the flowers themselves, the piano is a shade of sunny yellow. “Bloom Where You Are Planted” is painted across the front. Other decorations include illustrations of watermelon, flowers and the sun. Bennett said she will decorate a piano that is outside of her art gallery, Expressions, on South Main Street. “The piano dates to the mid- to late 1930s. It will be decorated with art deco designs and colors,” Bennett said. Children involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program will leave their mark on a piano located outside of the Mad Anthony Tap Room on North Main Street. The youngsters have been invited to leave their fingerprint in paint on the piano and artists Leah Whitted and Laurel Steffen will render the impressions into bugs and other designs, Bennett said. “We’re all excited about it,“ Bennett said of the exhibit. “There has been a lot of interest. It’s exciting to see how people have jumped on board.” “Pianos on the Square is the Auburn Arts Commission’s first public art project to have exhibits

in multiple communities. This ties in nicely with our mission to serve all of DeKalb County in encouraging the arts,” said commission president Sheryl Prentice. “Garrett, Waterloo and Butler are all excited to be included, and I hope this project inspires other countywide efforts to bring art experiences to everyone,” Prentice said.
