NEWS IN BRIEF Jail inmate’s death ruled a suicide FORT WAYNE — A DeKalb County Jail inmate who died Sunday at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne took his own life, the Allen County Coroner’s Office has ruled. An autopsy on Jessie J. Roby, 26, of Waterloo was performed Tuesday at the Indiana Forensic Center. The autopsy found Roby died from anoxic brain injury due to asphyxia due to hanging, said a news release from the coroner’s office. The manner of death was ruled to be suicide. DeKalb County Sheriff Don Lauer said Roby was found unconscious in a segregation cell at the jail at 11:28 p.m. Saturday. Confinement officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until EMS personnel and Auburn Fire Department first responders arrived. Roby was transferred to Parkview Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Roby had been in the jail since June 4, when he was booked on a charge of failing to appear at a court hearing regarding his arson case. On July 3, Roby pleaded guilty to the arson charge and was sentenced to two years in the county jail. With Indiana good-behavior credit, Roby could have been released as early as April 2014. Roby admitted to setting fire to a car in Waterloo in October 2012. In addition to his jail time, he was fined $1 and ordered to pay court costs. Lauer said a confinement officer watching a video monitoring system discovered the suicide. Roby had been moved to a segregation cell within the 24 hours prior to the suicide because of disciplinary issues, Lauer said.

Online student registration now open GARRETT — The GarrettKeyser-Butler School District online student registration for the 2013-2014 school year is open. If the enrollment process was not completed in the spring, parents are asked to complete this process now. The system is a secure and green process, which allows the district to verify all student demographic, emergency and medical information for your
child prior to the start of the new school year. The system will also allow you to electronically sign the annual permission forms for school district policies. This online process replaces all the hard copy student registration and permission forms. Letters were sent home to parents in May with instructions on how to access the system for their student.
Parents can also access this information by logging onto the schools website at www.gkb.k12. in.us and clicking on the Registration Tab. Parents of new students should contact the school prior to completing the online registration process. The online registration process must be completed for your student to start school on Aug. 12. For those who do not have
internet access or have questions, the Garrett Learning Center will be open for you complete this process on July 30 from 6-8 p.m. and on July 31 from 10 a.m. to noon and 2-4 p.m. Parents with questions about completing the registration can contact J. GHS students can use sports, activities for credit By Sue Carpenter scarpenter@kpcmedia.com GARRETT — The GarrettKeyser-Butler school board gave its approval Monday to allow activities outside the classroom to count toward physical education courses for high school students. The flex-credit policy would allow students who participate on sports teams, dance and band to earn class credit. Garrett High School Principal Matt Smith said the program was released by the Indiana Department of Education a few years ago, and he only recently found the need to implement it at Garrett. Smith said he researched policies for other schools
throughout the state and asked himself the question, “How does it fit Garrett High School?” Smith presented a compilation of all the pieces to fit toward the class requirements. “This policy puts ownership back on students,” Smith said. “It requires quite a bit of maturity and self-discipline. The flex credit shifts seat time to standards-based performance.” Components require a student to be involved in a physical activity, team sport and skill development or competition. Each participating students will create a Google calendar to share with the class mentor and provide a 3- to 5-page research project

involving subjects such as sportsmanship, social behavior and rules. A written reflection on the course is also required. A student must describe a significant experience or life lesson learned from
the activity. Students who cannot fulfill the class requirements will be reassigned to standard classrooms, Smith said. Any student who breaks team rules or violates the standards of a sport or activity also must return to standard classrooms. “This program really came to the forefront by a band student,” said Superintendent Dennis Stockdale. “She did research and homework and pointed to band and the rigors of marching.” Stockdale said it started him thinking that if an opportunity came up, he would like to see it Student credits, Page 5
County demands cleanup of abandoned mobile home park By Aaron Organ aorgan@kpcmedia.com AUBURN — The DeKalb County Commissioners on Monday ordered notification to the owners of a badly deteriorated mobile home park demanding action toward cleaning the site. The commissioners, at the urging of building and planning consulting inspector Don Myers, told the department to send a letter to the owner of the Hidden Valley Mobile Home Park — a Virginia-based holding company, ATCF REO Holdings LLC, according to the county assessor’s office. The letter will allow 30 days to act on cleaning the 10.94 acres just east of the county line on S.R. 8. Among the handful of mobile homes still at the site, each is missing exterior and interior walls and stripped
to its frame. Many still have abandoned recliners and mattresses inside. The ground around them is littered in layers of discarded furniture and household items, trash, debris and other materials. Earlier this year, county zoning administrator Clint Knauer told this newspaper that Hidden Valley violates county codes, and said his office had deemed the park a “public environmental nuisance,” due to excessive trash and debris. That tag gave the county grounds to take additional steps to see the property is cleaned should the landowner not fulfill an order. The county now is ready to pursue additional steps. AUBURN — Judge Kevin Wallace sentenced four people for criminal offenses during hearings Monday in DeKalb Superior Court I. • Derek Bryner of the 3900 block of C.R. 57, Butler, was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in jail for intimidation, a Class D felony. In a separate case, Bryner received a one-year suspended sentence and one year of probation for
invasion of privacy, a Class A misdemeanor. The sentences will be served consecutively. He was fined $1 and must pay court costs in each case. • Jeremy Putman of the 1100 block of Auburn Drive, Auburn, received a one-year suspended sentence and one year of probation for battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor. He was fined $1 and must pay court costs. • Janette Bennett of the 600 block of North Van Buren Street, Auburn, was
sentenced to 1 1/2 years in jail, all suspended except 90 days, for theft, a Class D felony. She received credit against the sentence for time already served in jail while the case was pending. She was placed on probation through Dec. 9, 2014, and was fined $1. She must pay court costs. • Kyle Cooke of Knox was placed on the judgment withheld program fort being a minor consuming alcohol. If he successfully completes the program, the charge will be dismissed.

Wendy Kay Yoder, 50, of the 1500 block of Dallas Street, Auburn, was arrested Thursday at 8:35 p.m. by the Auburn Police Department on a charge of Battery, a Class B misdemeanor. Elgin Sponhower, 32, of Auburn, was arrested Thursday at 7:11 p.m. by the DeKalb County Police Department on charge of three counts of auto theft; possession of methamphetamine, a Class D felony; and resisting law enforcement and possession of paraphernalia, Class A misdemeanors. BUTLER — Stanley David Emenhiser, 78, formerly of St. Joe, Ind., died Monday, July 22, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was born on October 1, 1934, in Fort Wayne to the late Charles W. and Ruth Irene (Heckler) Emenhiser. Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey (Diana) Emenhiser of Garrett, Ind., and Gene (Sandy) Emenhiser of St. Joe, Ind.; two daughters, Tina (Scott) Thayer of Canton, Mich., and Debra Emenhiser (Ramie Palmerton) of Auburn, Ind.; his grandchildren, Kristi, Joshua and Wesley Emenhiser, Nikki Karr, Robert and Ryan Emenhiser, Emily and Joe Thayer, Justin Endsley, and Haley Palmerton; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry Emenhiser of Butler, Ind., and Michael Emenhiser of Woodburn, Ind.; and three sisters, Mary Giesman of Indianapolis, Ind., Ruth Ann Wonderly of Hicksville, Ohio, and Gloria Inlow of Harlan, Ind. Mary Brown GARRETT — Mary D. Brown, 72, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at her home in Garrett. Mrs. Brown worked at Magnavox in Garrett, retiring in 1997. She was a member of the Garrett United Methodist Church. Mary loved to crochet, read, travel, but above all, she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was born May 12, 1941, in Harlan, Indiana, to Oren H. and Blanche E. (Lyons) Leavell. Mary married Robert G. Brown on Nov. 29, 1958, in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa, and he survives in Garrett. Also surviving are three daughters Mrs. Brown and sons-in-law, Jody L. and John Leslie of Kendallville, Sharon K. Brown of Garrett, and Jeannie M. and Craig Wehr of Auburn; six grandchildren, Jeremy Dean, Nathaniel Leslie, John Allen Leslie, Kyle Wehr, Kelsey Wehr, and Madison Wehr; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Fred and Kathy Leavell of Hicksville, Ohio, and Edward “Carl” Leavell of Waterloo, Iowa; and two sisters, Rose Battenburg of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Elsie Love of Harlan, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Leavell; and five sisters, Anna Mae Adams, Elberta Lindabury, Hazel Thomas, Betty Neely, and Ruth Ard. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 S. Center St., Auburn, with Pastor Allison Yankey officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Creek Cemetery in rural Garrett. maybe we’ll be a response.” Myers told the commissioners he’s spent months trying to track down the owner of property, which had been a local man before it was sold to the holding company. The county has had sporadic contact with
that company, Myers said, adding that it has tailed off lately. Knauer told this newspaper earlier this year that the county had ordered the owner in late winter to clean the site in “a timely fashion,” which has been ignored.

Dare to Dream Youth Ranch hosts day camp for Cancer Services clients FORT WAYNE — Dare to Dream Youth Ranch hosted a day camp for children with cancer in partnership with Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana last Saturday. The children and their families enjoyed a day of horseback riding, games, and ranch experiences. “Our partnership with Dare to Dream Youth Ranch for this event gave these brave kids and their families the opportunity to do fun activities that enrich their experience and build emotional strength for the challenges they face,” said Tina Roy, Assistant Program Director at Cancer Services. “We’re committed to making a positive impact on the lives of these families in a number of ways, and this day camp is just one of them. 145 golfers sign up for alumni event Maria wins the day While contemplating how I was going to start the write up of the 30th annual Greater Garrett alumni golf outing one thing kept going through my mind — Dante’s Inferno. It seemed that we were all condemned to eternal heat that has consumed us the last week or so. But then Friday dawned and there was a ALUMNI rustle of leaves when I arrived at GOLF 6:45 a.m. REPORT Hope against Aaron hope that we Smith would at least have a slight breeze to give 145 golfers some relief during the morning. We got off at approximately 8:20 and it wasn’t all that bad when the carts were underway. After the third hole, we began to feel a change in the air and the leaves. You could actually see the
underside of the leaves as the wind began to pick up and to make a long story short, my mind reverted to Paint Your Wagon and the song “They Call the wind Maria.” So from the Inferno, we at least got some relief from the excessive heat. Thank you! Maria.
First Flight For the first time in a long time we had the first three places determined without any ties. The first-place winner this year was the team of Merlin Bartels, John Moats, Tony Foar and Joe Newbauer. Merlin must have worked his magic as the improvement from 66 last year to 59 this year was just short of a miracle. Second place went to the team of Dave “Daffy” Claxton, Paul Warfield, John Dudash and Dave VanDerbosch. They made a four-stroke improvement to finish at 60 or 12-under-par. Nice improvement. The flex class will be open only to personalized learning students this year under the pilot program and perhaps open it to the general student body next year. Asked by a board member how the program would impact standard gym classes, Stockdale responded that instructors have been trying to reduce the size of enrollment in general physical education, and the flex-credit policy would help. Smith noted a student could use an activity only once year and would need to use a different activity for the second portion of the program. Stockdale told the board he led tours of the new high school for the Garrett High School class of 1963 during the recent alumni weekend. He also reported the cost for employee health insurance will see no increase due to healthy lifestyle measures implemented for the staff.
Personnel hired The board approved hiring Tanya August as elementary school speech pathologist and the resigna-
tion of Kathryn Purdy as elementary school special education instructor. The board approved several high school coaches — Brett Ratcliffe as head baseball coach; Bill Thomas, Sam Tipton, Andy Zaebst, and Andrew Townsley as assistant football coaches; Ray Placencia and Butch Johnson as volunteer football coaches; Chase Hall as football volunteer kicking coach for both the high school and middle school; Anne Shenk as volleyball assistant coach; Brett Davis as volleyball volunteer assistant coach; Julie Christensen as head cheer coach; Tori Cox and Becca Christensen as cheer volunteer assistant coaches; and Jackie Hood as cross country assistant coach. The board also approved three coaches for the middle school — Jake Clifford and Ryan Hathaway as eighthgrade football coaches; and Emilia Jones as volleyball coach. All three coached at the high school last year.

$3,500 for a used 2002 Dixie Chopper 72-inch mower; • to dispose of surplus personal property through online auctions, recycling, or declaring it worthless property; • to approve a temporary, one-half high school English class for the first semester only to be paid for out of the Imagining and Creating Grant fund, to help with personalized learning; • to amend high school course offerings by adding physical education I and II flex-credit courses; • to approve the resolution of the Board of School Trustees of the Garrett-Keyser-Butler CSD regarding Addendum A of the Anthem Master contract; • to amend the classified employee handbook; • to approve a compensation package for administrative staff; • to approve the agreement of Ashley Malfait as technology integration and curriculum content coach, to be paid out of the Imagining and Creating Grant fund; and • to update the staff long-term disability-income protection policy.

A little more practice and a couple of putts that can drop but didn’t this year will put you in the top three. Three teams at 10-under were Chad Harshman, Ty Maggert, Bob Bell and Tim Lemper. Backing up four strokes from last year was the team of Rocky and Todd Rowe, Cleo Miller and Ron Toll. Ron played this year in memory of his father, Gaylord who was a longtime supporter of the Alumni. R.I.P. Gaylord. Improving five shots from last year’s 70 were the boys from 61, Rick Reeves, John Flora, Mike Kock and
Curt Harriman. This is an improvement from where they have been the last few years. Keep working on your game boys and I will put back in the championship flight. Improving four stokes to a 65 was the team of Allen Brand and nephew Stan Huffer with help from James Vaughn who makes the trip every year with his mom, Carolyn. The only 66 was the team of Clay Beber, Dan Weimer, Todd Sattison and Brian Vogel. See ya’ next year. Leading four teams at 67 was the team of Larry Hixson, Henry Chairs, and Jim “The Murph” Murphy. Giving up four strokes from last year was the Kleeman brothers Mike and Tom with Ron and Kenny Cutler. Also Travis Gaar, Matt Cole, James Degitz and Josh Vanderbosch came in
five-under-par. Good game and see you next year. The three-man team of ageless Herb Kleeman, Kim Shumway and Bob Novy turned in a 67 as well. Good playing and Herb said he had to keep carrying you guys. All alone at 68 were Nick and Cheryl Hoot, and Mary Baughman and Jim Krause. Mary and Jim got to the course from Chicago with 30 minutes to spare. All the way from California to play in the alumni outing. They were rewarded with winning the only skin of the day in the first flight and split the money with Nick and Cheryl. Each pair got over $100. Makes it worthwhile. Congratulations and thanks for coming. Seventy was a good score for Tim Lantz, Tim Griffin and Steve Kennedy. Glad you could make it this year. A six-shot improvement over last year by the Fearsome Foursome — Harold Kleeman, Harold Custer, Al Souder and John Behler. Improvements like this will get you coming back year after year. You are an inspiration to us younger players. Improving one stroke this year with a 70 is the team of Doug, Gene, Bret Cramer and Jim Neeley. One-under-par was the team of Mark and Jed Feagler and Greg Heal. And last but not least it’s old John Kelley’s class of ‘62. Reserve Early - Don’t Be Disappointed
For the first time in awhile we had an outright winner in the championship flight. Usually we have to go to backup but this year it was the younger guns of Paul and Tony Surfus, Mark Steigmeyer and Kyle Branscum with an outstanding 12-under-par and they all played from the blue tees. That is some fine golfing boys and we will see you back here next year to defend your title. Pushing them all the way was the class of ‘64 playing from the white tees and shot five strokes better than last year for a 61. Perennial favorites Dan Brinkerhoff, Scott LaTurner, Curt and Adam Custer dropped a shot from last year’s 61 to stand alone in third place with a 62. Very consistent year-after-year. Class of 1981 members Jed Melott, Chris Hoeffel and Jeff Schendel also shot a 62. Four teams shot 63s. Jim Vogel, Kip Maggert, Greg Velpel and Steve Boman —that was one shot worse than last year. New team of Scott and Dale Pfeiffer and Tim and Chris Vogel did a nice job the first time out with another 63. The 2008 graduates got it together for another 63 with and eagle thrown in for good measure. I spent 20 minutes trying to read their scorecard. Very creative, boys. Last year’s champions, Greg Shippy, Kim Dove and a couple of sons Justin and Eric Shippy came back to defend their title and fell a little short as they were four shots off last year’s winning score of 59, still a 63 isn’t bad. Thanks for coming to defend your title. Team Frog, Bruce Nason, Wayne Peters and Todd Steward were one of four teams to shoot 64. Threesome Jeff Morris, Greg Grubb and Scott High alternated shots and shot another 64. Team Blotkamp — Bob, John, Tom and Ron brought the right team this time and improved seven strokes for another 64. Rounding out the 64s was the team of Walter Beber, Ron Conrad and “Jolly Chisholm” and back after a 15-year hiatus — Aaron Smith. I can see why they didn’t want me after all these years only helped on a few holes. But the teamed improved two strokes from when Hunk Feick was playing with
them. Maybe they will keep me. John and Craig Hutton, Dave Alverson and Steve Steigmeyer shot a 7-under 65. Dropping three strokes from last year was the team of Wayne Bartels, Tom Ely, Kenny Carroll and Paul Ridenhour. Seventy this year and room for improvement next year. Following up this year was an announcer’s nightmare Brad Przymeleski, Greg Pinckney, Doug Mossberger and Dean Weimer. You guys had a great time and you were the class of 1989. When you come back next year you will be in the first flight and then you can do some a**-kicking. A big thank you to all who participated this past year. We continue to be the envy of all the surrounding schools as we far outdraw their events.

There were no skins in the championship flight and as previous rules the skin pot would go to the scholarship fund and I am proud to announce that with that $300. And the $5.00 fee we contributed almost $1,000 to the fund. A job well done classmates. Shout out to my able-bodied workers Sandy and Carol “Gaff sisters.” They know everyone in Garrett so check in time goes fast. Trophies for the oldest Golfer Herb Kleeman at 88 and the coveted Czar award to Wayne Bartels who has supported the golf outing, sports at Garrett High School and untold donated hours to the JAM Center and is very deserving of this award.
