Baseball team seeks more success in 2016 BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — You’ll still find Aaron Willard wearing the trademark green and gold Eastside hat with the white script E in the third-base dugout, but this year, it will be on the baseball field. After more than 500 victories in 23 seasons, Willard has traded the softball coaching reins for baseball. Willard takes over for Jason Pierce, now at Churubusco, and inherits loads of talent from a team that went 14-10 last season. “In softball, we had a system that we did for a number of years,” Willard said. “I didn’t have to teach it to everybody, (except for) the new kids coming in. “It’s been a little bit of an adjustment, where maybe now, kids look at me and don’t really understand what’s going on. The older kids can’t teach the younger kids yet, so that’s been the biggest adjustment. I like to go pretty quick, so I’ve had to slow down a little bit, but so far, so good. The kids have been very committed. “It’s going to be an adjustment for me. Softball, it’s 60 feet (between the bases), baseball is 90. Getting a feel for when to

send kids, when to tag, when not to tag, when to bunt, when not to bunt, some of that I think is instinct. Aaron Willard Dove “I’ve seen enough of summer baseball that I think I have that instinct of when things could happen. I just don’t have the practical side of things yet,” he said. “It’s going to take me a little bit to get adjusted, but (the March 23 scrimmage) is a start.” Eastside’s strength will be on the mound, with three solid starters in juniors Conner Dove, Jackson White and Cade Willard. Dove missed all of last season with a knee injury, but was 3-3 as a freshman with 40 strikeouts in just over 51 innings and a 3.52 earned run average. White took on much of Dove’s workload last year, and posted solid numbers. White was 3-3 with 32 strikeouts and a 2.89 earned run average in just over

38 innings. Cade Willard dominated opponents last year, compiling a 6-1 record, Jksn. White Cade Willard 84 strikeouts and just 22 walks in 57 innings. His earned run average was a stellar 0.366 with three saves. “Those three are our nucleus,” coach Willard said. Junior Matt David (0-1, 1.31 earned run average in five innings), junior lefty Dalton Rieke, junior Zach Orn and sophomore Caleb Ballentine could also see mound duty for the Blazers. Senior Cory Franz (.288 batting average, 21 hits, 16 runs, 11 steals) and freshman Joe White will share catching duties for the Blazers. When he doesn’t pitch, Dove will play third base, with David or Brennan Biddle there at other times. Dove batted .301 as a freshman with 25 hits.

Orn will play shortstop. Orn saw varsity action late in the season after batting .574 at the reserve level. “He’s a very nice player,” coach Willard said. “He’s athletic and he’s a good fielder.” Ballentine, who mostly played third last year, will move to second base this year. Rieke and sophomore Riley Thompson will play first base. Rieke batted .279 with 19 hits and 10 runs scored a year ago. Several players could see time in the Blazer outfield, including Biddle, Willard, senior Jon Imhoff, and juniors Dan Carnahan and Jordan Yoder. Imhoff had a team-leading .333 average in 78 at-bats last year. He had 26 hits, scored 11 times and drove in 11. Imhoff also had 10 stolen bases. Willard batted .294 with 25 hits, five doubles and 11 runs scored. He swiped nine bases. Carnahan batted .433 at the reserve level and Yoder batted .359. “Our seniors (Franz and Imhoff) would like to win the sectional, win our conference and we’d like to win the conference tournament,” coach Willard said. ➤ Baseball, Page 9

Eastside boys putting puzzle together BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — The 2016 Eastside boys track season will be a matter of fitting pieces of the puzzle together. Last year, the pieces fit quite nicely, with P.J. Dean and Jacob Thompson becoming Eastside’s first state qualifiers since 1992. Dean placed 11th of 29 competitors in the long jump. He broke a 23-yearold school record at 22 feet, 8 inches while winning a sectional championship. Thompson was 25th in the discus and obliterated Eastside’s school record with a throw of 156-8 at the regional meet. There are just 22 athletes out for the team, and veteran head coach Josh Schache is counting on several returnees to make up for points lost from nine seniors, including Dean, Jesse Eck and Ethan Moughler. Those three comprised three-fourths of Eastside’s sectional championship and school-record-holding 4x100-meter relay team. Two athletes who also had turns on the 4x100 relay team are back, however,

in senior Codey Ross and junior Keezan Jarrard. Ross joined with Dean, Eck and Beard Biddle Moughler when that quartet set the record at the NECC meet at 44.26 seconds. When Ross was unable to run at the sectional meet, Jarrard filled in nicely, and at the regionals, he and the other three tied the newly-minted record. “The leadership, the excitement and the fun are going to be extremely hard to replace,” Schache said. “(Keezan) has a motor that will not stop, and he understands he is going to have to fill some of the voids we have.” Jarrard will primarily run the 200- and 400-meter dashes and others. Having experience against the best competition in the state will only help Thompson, Schache believes.

“His confidence and work ethic went through the roof,” the Blazer coach said of Jarrard Thompson Thompson. “He is already a very self-driven kid, and to a point, he overachieved his goals last year. Now, knowing what he can do, he has set very high goals and we have very high expectations for him. “He wants to win conference and sectional which are more than possible,” Schache said. “He wants to win regional and place in the top five at state. We are looking for a huge improvement in the shot put. If he can develop in that, he will be one of the best throwers in the area.” Ross and fellow seniors Tyler Beard, Keagan Biddle, Travis Kreidt and Steven Truelove should be able to score points consistently for Eastside.

Ross will compete in the 400, pole vault and relays. Beard returns in the 800. Biddle will run the 1,600 and 3,200. Kreidt and Truelove will run the hurdle events. Zac Kaiser will compete in the 800 and relays. Sophomore Aaron Dean has the knowledge and ability of his brother, Schache said. It’s a matter of developing his explosiveness. Dean will also compete in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Also helping out in the sprints will be McCullough Baysden, Logan Hegerfeld and Trey Staley. In addition to Thompson, Jacob Eck and Andrew Steffen will compete in throwing events. “Right now, we are trying to just put the puzzle together,” Schache said. “Losing everyone that we did last year is hard. They complimented each other very well. That is what we are trying to get back to. “I haven’t said this in a very long time, but our goal is going to be to develop as the season progresses and see where we end up at the end of the year.

Business as usual for softball Blazers BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — While there are new and different faces — both on the playing roster and in coaching capacities — it’s business as usual for Eastside’s softball team. Brock Treesh, who served as an assistant coach during last season’s 20-14 campaign that included a sectional championship, takes over the program as head coach. Mike Hartman, also an assistant coach last year, moves up to the varsity program with Treesh. Longtime head coach Aaron Willard has traded the softball job to be Eastside’s baseball coach after racking up more than 500 victories in 23 seasons. “Coming into the head coaching job this year has been pretty smooth,” Treesh said. “The buy-in from all of the players has been great. I believe it has helped me not being a new face. We have been going two days a week with open gyms since football season.” Having six returning players from last year’s sectional championship team doesn’t hurt either.

Senior Ashton Miller is back in the circle following a 13-9 campaign that included Treesh Huff 232 strikeouts and a 1.94 earned run average. Miller led off for the Blazers last year and posted team bests in average (.479), hits (57), runs scored (44), doubles (7), triples (5), home runs (4) and stolen bases (16 of 17). She drove in 19 runs. When she’s not pitching, Miller will play shortstop after playing some first and second base last year. “Her ability on the field speaks for itself,” Treesh said. “She is a player you can put anywhere and she will be just fine. Players look to her for leadership and that is very important.” Senior Casey Whitman saw time at first and second base as well as designated player. She had 15 hits and drove in nine

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Eastside’s golf team has one senior and new coaches for 2016. Landen Brow, a two-time All-Northeast Corner Conference selection, will be something of a coach on the course for the younger players. The father-son tandem of Lonny and Seth Emenhiser will serve as co-coaches for the golf team. Seth is a former Eastside golfer. “I am excited to be able to coach this team with the person who has taught me everything that I know about golf,” Seth Emenhiser said. “He will be coaching the team while I am finishing up school for the semester, and then once I am done for the semester, we will both be coaching. “Every person has a different approach to the game, and my dad will be able to help them with their approach to every course,” the younger Emenhiser said. “All eight golfers are extremely competitive, and all of them want to be on the varsity team,” he added. “All eight will improve throughout the season, and they

will be at their peak around the NECC conference tournament and sectionals. “I S. Emenhiser Brow expect big things from Landen,” the Eastside coach said. “He has a great golf swing, and he will play a huge part in the leadership role on this team. Landen understands the game, and he will be able to help out the younger talent on the team.” Brow was named most valuable golfer at 2015 team awards night. Juniors Kameron Hoff and Nick Miller are also returning varsity players. Hoff was named most improved golfer on last year’s squad. “Nick will be the vocal leader on the team,” Emenhiser said. “Nick is always ➤ Golf, Page 9

runs a year ago. “I have now coached Casey in two sports, and her leadership is the Miller Nickolson best I have seen,” Treesh said. “She is the ultimate teammate, and she will be vital to our success this year.” Junior Mataya Nickolson returns behind the plate for the Blazers, where she had a .298 batting average with 31 hits, 17 runs scored and 18 batted in. She connected for seven doubles and swiped nine bases. “Her abilities behind the plate are great, and we are looking for great things from her this year both defensively and offensively,” Treesh said. Junior Tarese Huff returns at third base. She had 19 hits with four doubles and drove in nine runs last year. “We are looking for some big things for her,” Treesh said. “Her abilities at third give us strong corners.”

Junior Autumn Graber returns in right field. Sophomore Lexi Gearhart moves from left to center field. Graber batted .143 in 42 plate appearances with six hits and four runs batted in. Gearhart batted .100 in 60 plate appearances. She scored 14 runs. “(Autumn) has been a great leader,” Treesh said. “This year, we will need her bat. I believe this is the year her abilities on offense and defense will be on display and it will be a good year for her. “(Lexi) has worked very hard coming into this season,” the Blazer coach said. “Her intangibles are great, and her leadership in the outfield will be huge this year.” Backing up Miller in the pitching circle are sophomore Chelsea Torres and junior Jessica Hartman. Both pitched at the reserve level, although Torres did get into two varsity games. Torres can also play first. Hartman is a utility player capable of playing third or left field. Blazer girls short on numbers, not talent BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — There are just 14 athletes on Eastside’s girls track team, but there’s plenty of talent to go around, according to coach Seth Wilcox. Juniors Emma Moughler and Hannah Yoder have accumulated boatloads of points the past two seasons, but as they are among the most experienced members of the team, Wilcox is counting on both to take on leadership roles. Both are off to solid starts, having qualified for the HSR state indoor finals in at Purdue University in West Lafayette. Moughler returns after becoming the first Eastside girl to reach the state finals since 1993. At the state finals in Bloomington last June, Moughler tied for 13th place after clearing 5 feet, 3 inches. Returning to the state finals isn’t guaranteed, but according to Wilcox, Moughler wants to do that and more. “Emma wants to be on the podium this year at state,” he said. “The experience she gained last year has given her a lot of confidence this season. Emma understands

that it is hard to get back to state, but she is already more focused this year than last year.” Moughler’s personal best in high jump is 5-4, accomplished last year at the Northeast Corner Conference meet last year. Eastside’s DeWeese school record of 5-6 is attainable. Moughler was a three-event regional qualifier last season. She holds the school record at 1:01.45 in the 400-meter dash and has a respectable best of 16-3 in the long jump. Yoder was a solid competWebb itor in both hurdle events last year, just missing a spot at regionals, placing fourth in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles. She will also compete in the 300-meter hurdles. At a March 12 indoor meet at Trine University, she ran a time of 10.21 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Maddisyn Heffley also returns in both hurdle events as well as long jump.

“We’re a very young team,” Wilcox said. “We only have one senior this year in Cooper Handshoe. This is her first year running track, so we’re still trying to find a place for her. “So far this spring, sophomores Kylie Webb and Moughler Olivia Yoder have shown huge improvements in shot put,” Wilcox said. At Trine on March 12, Yoder’s best throw was 28-9 1/2. Webb was right behind at 28-7. Hailey Casto and Audri Delagrange will also compete in throwing events for Eastside. Delagrange showed great potential in the H. Yoder discus last year, recording career-best throws of 96-3 at both the Turtle Town Invitational and NECC meet. Freshman Abbi Kreidt will be expected to contribute in sprints. At the Trine meet, Kreidt ran 8.69 seconds in the 60-meter dash. Kreidt also competes in high jump.

Another freshman, MaryLou DeWeese, could make contributions in distance events. With Hannah Yoder, DeWeese was a regional qualifier this fall for Eastside’s cross-country team. In addition to DeWeese in distance events, cross-country teammates Kristin Brown and Faith Schlie, plus Maria Rohr, give the Blazers depth and experience. Handshoe, Kreidt and first-year runner Lindsey Beard will compete in sprints. Beard, Brown and Schlie will run middle distance events. “We only have 14 girls out this season, but I think most of those 14 will be big contributors this season,” Wilcox said. “When I had the girls write down their team goals for this year, some of the ones that came up a lot were placing high in the NECC meet, placing high at the Turtle Town Relays and showing improvement every meet through the year. “I think those are great girls that the girls have really started taking ownership in,” he said. “I think we’re going to have a very competitive, fun season.” Eastside has four home meets this season, beginning Wednesday against Woodlan.

Baseball from Page 3 Another goal is to get past the 20-win plateau, something that an Eastside baseball hasn’t accomplished since the 2000 season. “The evaluation for me is short-term, but I think it’s a pretty good group,” coach Willard said. “Underneath, I really like our freshman class. Some of those kids will push for varsity time before it’s all said and done. “They’re very coachable and they’ve worked hard,” the Blazer coach continued.

straight, and I can see Julius scoring low on all of those courses.” While new to the game, Emenhiser said Leeper is coachable, “and once he learns the game, he will improve throughout the season.” The Blazer coaches will emphasize course management with every hole. “Golf is all about management and strategy,” Emenhiser said. “You need to go into each hole and have a plan where you want to hit each shot. Everyone of these kids want to hit the ball 300 yards every time, but they must be smart with every one of their shots. They need to have great golf management from tee to green.
