New coach likes Blazers’ heart, passion BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — New Eastside softball coach Courtney Sliger sees heart and passion in players as the 2017 season begins. Sliger played two years at DeKalb and two years at Lakewood Park, helping the Panthers to back-to-back Class A state championships in 2012 and 2013. “The players have heart and passion, two things that are vital in winning games,” Sliger said. “Their hard work was evident during the off-season, rolling right into the regular season. Never satisfied is the standout quality for every single player on this team. “A bad throw, an error, or an OK hit? The players desire more,” she explained. “They want to achieve a sense of perfection. This has only made it that much easier to be involved in the program. Since the girls are so eager to learn and get better, I am able to teach and mentor this team with ease.” The 2016 Blazers finished 21-7, winning the Northeast Corner Conference regularseason championship and their third sectional title in a row. Sliger will be assisted by returning assistant coaches Mike Hartman and Tony Salinas and returning reserve coaches Jill Richman and Audrey Wicker. All-state selection Ashton Miller was a key cog in that success. Last year, she set an Eastside record with a .570 batting average to go with 53 hits, 15 doubles, 37 runs scored and 24 runs batted in. She was a perfect 31-of-31 in stolen bases and struck out just twice all season. In the circle, Miller was 16-5 with a 1.38 earned run average. She struck out 218 batters while walking just 38 in 147 innings. Also lost to graduation was first baseman Casey Whitman, who batted .274 with 23 hits and 18 runs batted in. Chelsea Torres both saw varsity pitching time last year. Their workload will naturally increase in 2017. Sophomore Jahnna Weaver, who pitched mostly on the reserve team, will also be in the varsity mix. Torres was 3-1 in 27 innings and a 3.11 earned run average. She struck out 21 and walked six. Hartman pitched 11 innings, going 2-1 with a 6.36 earned run average and five strikeouts. Senior Mataya Nickolson returns behind the plate. While her season was cut short due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident, when healthy, Nickolson batted .340 with 16 hits and 13 runs batted in. As a freshman, Shyan McKinley was called upon to take over when Nickolson got hurt. She batted .231 with 18 hits, including three doubles, and drove in 13 runs. McKinley may see playing time at first or in the outfield as well as behind the plate. Senior Tarese Huff returns at third base. She batted .225 with 16 hits and 15 runs batted in last season. Junior Raegan Johnson returns at second.

The Blazers are strong up the middle with sophomore Brittany Salinas returning at shortstop and junior Lexi Gearhart back to patrol center field. As a sophomore, Gearhart batted .306, with 22 hits, two doubles, three triples, 18 runs and 12 runs batted in. Salinas batted .307 with 27 hits, three doubles, a triple, 23 runs scored and 14 knocked in. She also stole 19 bases. Senior Ruby Redinger (.222, nine runs scored) returns in the outfield. Senior Miranda Morr and junior Haleigh Czaja will get looks at first base. Junior Julia Baker could see playing time at second. Brynn Phillips could contribute at first base or in the outfield. Sliger attends Huntington University, and will graduate in May with a nursing degree and a minor in psychology. She

has played softball since age six, and has coached travel softball for several seasons. “I love this team’s drive, their motivations, passions, and heart to not only win games, but to be better women,” Sliger said. “They never give up on plays in practice, and are never satisfied. This allows me to push them more and more to become better softball players.” If anything, Sliger doesn’t want her players to be so hard on themselves. “Greatness and achievement come with the rough times,” she said. “That’s what will sharpen their games as well as character. “With the background and tradition of this team, a goal for us is to win sectionals,” Sliger said. “With the heart that these girls have, they can achieve anything they put their minds to, and I can’t wait to watch it all happen.”

Experienced Blazers ready for big 2017 BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Nine players return with significant varsity experience for Eastside’s baseball team this season. Second-year head coach Aaron Willard has five returning pitchers and four players who have signed to play college baseball. Seniors Cade Willard, Conner Dove, Jackson White, Matt David and Dalton Rieke all saw time on the mound for the Blazers. Willard compiled a 5-1 record in 52 innings. He recorded 65 strikeouts and an 0.808 earned run average. He had one save and walked just 16 batters all season. He has signed to play baseball at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne. Dove was 5-2 last season, recording 31 strikeouts while walking 13 in 36 innings. He recorded a 1.70 ERA. Dove has signed to play baseball and football at Trine University. Jackson White compiled a 3-2 record in 26 innings last year. He recorded 29 strikeouts and just seven walks to go with a 2.39 ERA. White has signed to play baseball at Franklin College. David was 1-2 with 22 strikeouts, eight walks and a 1.27 ERA in 22 innings. Rieke appeared in just over nine innings for Eastside. Dove, who will also play in the infield when not pitching, had a team-leading .385 batting average, with 30 hits in 78 plate appearances. He recorded eight doubles and drove in 19 runs. As a freshman, Joe White batted .361 with 22 hits in 61 at-bats, driving in 10 runs. White will catch, play infield or outfield this season. Willard and junior Caleb Ballentine each batted .357 for the Blazers last year. Willard had 30 hits in 84 at-bats.

He had a team-leading four home runs, drove in 17 and scored 29 times. Ballentine was 25-of-70 at the plate. He knocked in a team-best 23 runs. Infielder Zach Orn, who has signed to play baseball at Valparaiso University, batted .354, recording 29 hits in 82 plate appearances. Orn had a team-best 12 doubles and scored 25 runs. Orn could also pitch some for the Blazers. Senior Jordan Yoder returns at an outfield position this season. He batted .268, scoring 15 runs last season. Lost to graduation was center fielder Jon Imhoff. Imhoff batted .254, scoring 18 runs last season. Returning to the Eastside coaching staff are assistants Tony Emenhiser, Garth Fiedler and John Gravante. The Blazers open their season at Woodlan Thursday, followed by four home games (DeKalb on April 4, Antwerp, Ohio on April 7 and a doubleheader with Hicksville, Ohio on April 8).

Boys track team has many strengths BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — New boys track coach Seth Wilcox said his team has several strong points entering the 2017 season. Wilcox, who has coached the Eastside girls team the past three seasons, has 29 athletes, including nine seniors, nine juniors, three sophomores, six freshmen and two exchange students on the boys team. The Blazers finished 5-2 in dual meets last year under then-coach Josh Schache, who led the boys team for 10 seasons. Schache is now an administrator in the East Noble system. “This early season has been great so far,” Wilcox said. “This is a group that loves to win. It has definitely added a competitive element to our workouts. “The guys’ team has some strengths everywhere,” the Blazer coach said. Several seniors have taken on leadership roles that are so important to success. “Jacob Thompson and Jacob Eck are leading the throwers this season. Keezan Jarrard has been a leader to the sprinters. Zac Kaiser has been a great

leader overall, and really pushes the distance team,” Wilcox said. “Remington Cline is going to be a great asset to the team,” Wilcox added. “He is an excellent hurdler, but he is also a kid that you can put anywhere and know that he will compete.” Juniors Aaron Dean and Keenon

advanced to the regional meet with a time of 11.61 seconds in the 100-meter dash at the Angola Sectional. Staley will also compete in the long jump. Freshman Gezahagne Biddle, a regional qualifier in cross country, juniors Spencer Geyer and Grayson Vestergaard and senior Travis Wasson are expected to contribute in distance events. Junior Jordan Esposito is expected to help in the high jump and long jump. “The guys want to be competitive as a team at the NECC and sectional meets,” Wilcox said. “There are many athletes who want to advance to the regional meet, and a few that would love to get to Bloomington (state finals) in June.” Todd Mason is overseeing the boys team while coaching sprints and relays. Ryan Spiess returns to coach distance runners. Kagan Gentry is back coaching throwing events. Wilcox is coaching hurdles and jumping events. The Blazers will compete at East Noble on April 4. The only home meet is May 2 against Garrett.

Smith will give depth to the sprint events. Dean will compete in the long jump. Juniors Austin Antrup and Andrew Steffen will compete in the throwing events. Wilcox noted there are some younger athletes who should be able to give the team depth in several events as well. Last year, Thompson set the Eastside record with a throw of 157 feet, 9 inches in the distance. His best throw in the shot put is 45 feet. He was first in the discus at the Angola Sectional, second at the Northeast Corner Conference meet and fifth at the Marion Regional. As a sophomore, he advanced to the state track finals in the discus. He was fourth at the NECC meet in the shot put. Cline’s best time in the 110-meter high hurdles is 15.9 seconds and 42.48 seconds in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. A regional qualifier in the 200-meter dash, Jarrard’s best time in the event is 23.7 seconds. He is a past sectional champion in the 4x100-meter relay. Last year as a freshman, Trey Staley

Blazer girls excited for potential in 2017 BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Eastside’s girls track team has several key people returning along with some new faces in different spots this season. It has coach Seth Wilcox eager for the season to begin. There are just three seniors on the team, although three very good ones. Back are Audri Delagrange, Emma Moughler and Hannah Yoder. Delagrange placed eighth at the Northeast Corner Conference meet in the discus and has the ability to crack the 100-foot barrier. Moughler, a state qualifier in the high jump two seasons ago, last year placed second at the NECC meet in the event and won the sectional title. Moughler, who holds the school record in the 400-meter dash, will compete in sprint events. Yoder was second in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles and just missed advancing in the 300-meter hurdles at sectionals. She was runner-up in both events at the NECC meet. She holds the school record in the 100 hurdles. Eastside finished 2-5 in dual meets last season and placed sixth at the NECC meet. Junior Olivia Yoder returns in the throws. She was sixth at the NECC meet in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Erika Brock, Abbi Kreidt and Krystal Renfrow should contribute in the sprints. Brock is also slated to run the hurdle events. Kreidt is expected to compete in the long jump. In addition to Delagrange and Olivia Yoder in the throws, contenders in those events include Maddisyn Heffley, Kylie Webb and Chloe Whitman. Heffley will compete in the pole vault. Distance runners include Kristin Brown, Lindsey Beard and Maria Rohr.

“We are loaded up in the sprints, hurdles and field events,” Wilcox said. “We have a lot of talent that we will be continually trying to figure out where they will do their best. “Hannah, Emma and Audri have already left a great impact on this program,” he added. “They are looking forward to have great senior seasons and leading this team this season. “The girls want to be competitive as a team at the NECC and sectional meets,” Wilcox said. “There are many athletes who want to advance to the regional meet, and a few that would love to get to Bloomington (state finals) in June.” Todd Mason is overseeing the boys team while coaching sprints and relays.
