Disc golf popularity expands local tournament By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com
The Three Rivers Open disc golf tournament has swelled to two days for 2013. Amateurs will play Saturday, Aug. 17, and professionals will compete Sunday, Aug. 18. An informal doubles event and golf clinic will be held Friday, Aug. 16. All events will be held at Swinney Park. “Last year we had just one day, and it was just too many people to handle on one day so we had to break it up with the amateurs one day and pros on the other,” said Brian Miller, a local disc golf professional and a member of the governing committee of Fort Disc Golf Club. The tournament will draw from league play at Shoaff Park, Moser Park in New Haven, and East and West Swinney. Other players are welcome, too. “Last year we had 92 amateurs and 50 pros, and this year we’re expecting

The Fort Wayne Department of Parks and Recreation recently authorized another course. “We just got permission to put in a course at Tillman Park on the south side of Fort Wayne,” Miller said. “We haven’t done much work yet, but we’re pretty

Jimmy Ray’s Bar-B-Que will serve on site both days. Players pay an entry fee for the tournament, but spectators are admitted free. Amateurs play for funny money to spend on disc golf equipment from the golf club or from one of the title sponsors, Dynamic Discs. The other main sponsor is B.F. Goodrich. Professionals play for cash, and for points in the statewide standings. The Three Rivers Open is event No. 7 of the Northern Indiana Summer Series. Fort Wayne pro Koontz was 11th in the state standings after six events, although he played in only two of the events up to July 13. Pros also can earn cash from their season performance in the state series. Miller is a touring pro, who plays in about 15 events each year. He will compete as far away as Minnesota or Kansas, wherever he can drive in one day. Miller was one
of the rookies of the year in 2008, according to Disc Golf magazine. He enjoys the sponsorship of Dynamic Discs, which he described as one of the leading disc golf retailers. On July 3, he was at the company’s headquarters in Emporia, Kansas, helping to prepare for the amateur world championships. “It will have a huge economic impact for the community,” he said. “So we’re in town visiting family and helping get it ready.” Now back in Fort Wayne, he is organizing and publicizing the Three Rivers Open. “We’d like to invite anyone who’s interested to come and watch the regional professionals on Sunday,” he said. The band Urban Legend brings its rhythm and blues and rock and soul to Georgetown Square from 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 26 for the Georgetown Fridays concert series. Admission is free. Band spokesman Mark Gevaart said the band opened its season with New Haven Canal Days, and then opened the Friday Nites Live concert series at Jefferson Pointe. “We were asked to open Jefferson Pointe for the first show of the summer, and this was our sixth year to work Jefferson Pointe,” he said. “We’ve also done several weddings this spring and into June.” The band also had a July 3 date in Battle Creek, Mich. The evening of Aug. 17, the band will play at Taste of Roanoke. Georgetown Square launched the three-concert summer series June 28 with the the classic rock of the Junk Yard Band. The final concert date is Aug. 23, with Top-40 country band Renegade and an intermission performance by members of the Snider High School marching band.

Urban Legends publicity promises classics from the ’60s to today. The band has been playing in the Fort Wayne area for more than six years, including 2011 and 2012 appearances at the Three Rivers Festival. Stores to donate backpacks Four area stores will donate backpacks ďŹ lled with school supplies between noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. The Cellular Connection, the largest Verizon Premium Wireless Retailer in the U.S., in a joint effort with its customers, is donating 60,000 backpacks through its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway initiative. More than 400 participating TCC stores across the U.S. are inviting local families to bring their children to the store during the give-away to receive back-
packs ďŹ lled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more. Backpacks will be given away on a ďŹ rst-come, ďŹ rst-served basis while supplies last. Participating stores in Fort Wayne are located at: 6404 W. Jefferson Blvd., Suite A; 6821 Lima Road; 10132 Maysville Road; and 5956 Stellhorn Road, Suite C. “This is an exciting time for me,” said Kenneth Folks, who assumed the office of superintendent of East Allen County Schools on July 1. “I know there are lots of challenges,” Folks said in an interview. “There are challenges in all school corporations — challenges with budget, finance, curriculum — but I’m just looking forward to getting out and meeting with everybody.” The Allen County native planned to visit Principal Neal Brown III at Leo Jr./ Sr. High School on July 12, completing his first round of visits to the four high schools. Folks’ most recent post was as assistant superintendent of Marion Community Schools. His previous positions include two Northwest Allen County Schools administrative posts and a Norwell position. He replaced Superintendent Karyle Green, whose last day at the New Haven office was March 1. Folks planned to visit every school before a July 16 meet-and-greet at the

EACS Administration Building. He said EACS Public Relations Liaison Tamyra Kelly suggested the meet-and-greet. “I think it’s a great idea, because it’s definitely what I want to do,” Folks said. On his first day on the job, he visited East Allen University and Principal Doug Hicks, and Paul Harding Junior High School and Principal Teresa Grimaux. Soon after, he visited New Haven, Woodlan and Heritage high schools. “I want to get out to the buildings and meet with the principals and have them show me around and tell me about things they’re concerned about,” Folks said.

Folks said he has met twice with Ron Crosby, the president of the East Allen Educators Association. “We hope to have a good relationship with the teachers association and really have a team effort to improve education in East Allen County Schools,” Folks said. “I had a blast at the Hoagland Days parade, walking down the street, running from one side of the street to the other and introducing myself,” Folks said. He wore a bright orange T-shirt with the motto “Dream It. Do It.” Those T-shirts were another of Kelly’s ideas, he said. “Obviously having been at Norwell and Carroll, I already knew many of the principals, athletic directors and coaches,” Folks said. For now, he is busy meeting with community organizations. When the opportunities arise, he said, he will attend sports, band and other school activities. In the Northwest Allen County Schools, Folks served as principal at Carroll Middle School and later as the first principal of the Carroll Freshman Academy. Having commuted 56 miles each way to Marion for his previous position, Folks welcomes the shorter drive from his Fort Wayne home to his office in New Haven. “My commute to work is about 16, 17 miles, so not too bad,” he said. “It’s not bad to have a little commute. It’s a good time to think about the day ahead, and a little unwind time at the end of the day.” In the interview, he repeated a theme from the June news conference at which he was introduced. “It’s gotta be a team effort,” he said. “That’s what I’m used to. I’m used to working in teams where we collaborate and we reach consensus whenever we can.”

The Shoaff Park tennis courts are getting a new look, at a cost of about $90,000. Steve Schuhmacher, the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department’s superintendent of parks and grounds and capital improvements, included Shoaff Park in a recent report to the Park Board. “The surfacing on the tennis courts has deteriorated and reached the end of its life cycle, and we just need to go in and put a new surfacing on it,” Schuhmacher told this newspaper. “And we’re looking at some new fencing around

the outside of it, to spruce it up, to make it a little more usable. And we’ll get some new nets on the tennis courts.” Those new nets were in place before the Fourth of July. Schuhmacher said the Shoaff tennis courts see about average use among the city’s tennis courts. “We don’t have tournaments or anything like that. It’s recreational use,” he said. Shoaff Park offers four tennis courts. In all, Fort Wayne Parks offer 62 outdoors tennis courts, including 39 with lights. Schuhmacher said he expects the work to be complete by fall.
Shoaff Park, at 6401 St. Joe Road, covers 184.5 acres. The land was purchased in 1955, with a donation from the Shoaff family. According to the city parks’ website, “Though Shoaff’s most distinguishing feature is the natural beauty of its wooden areas, it is also distinguished by the fact that is offers the most amenities of any park.” The park offers boating, golf, Frisbee/disc golf, pavilions, a playground, a splash pad, ball diamonds, soccer fields, and basketball and tennis courts, plus 1.3 miles of riverbank and a boat ramp. Ag Appreciation Day celebrates role in economy By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com
The fourth annual Ag Appreciation Day to be held July 31 at Jefferson Park will allow the New Haven Chamber of Commerce to recognize the farm community. “We don’t have a lot of farmers that are chamber members, but we have a lot of companies that are members of the chamber that are involved with agriculture,” said Charles Hatten, chamber CEO and president. Those companies provide mortgages, rent or sell farm equip-
ment, or buy products from the farmers, he said. “So it’s a big part of our community, an important segment,” Hatten said. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jefferson Park, 1720 S. Webster Road, New Haven. Admission is free. The Heritage and Woodlan chapters of the FFA will be on hand to prepare food, assist the vendors and help with parking. The whole-hog pork sandwiches will be served for a freewill offering. “We’re hoping that each chapter will have 15
to 20 kids,” said Mike Shirey, the Heritage FFA adviser. “The kids are looking forward to it. It’s an opportunity for them to partner with a lot of agricultural businesses that partner with us throughout the year.” Rod McKee, the Woodlan FFA adviser, said his chapter will cooperate with the Heritage chapter, helping vendors unload, help with parking, collecting trash. “All of that is important,” he said. “We are serving our community.” The Heritage FFA also

It was just not a good idea to get the guys out of the field.” Hatten said he expected 300 to 500 people to attend. Speakers will include Jon Cavanaugh, the marketing director for Central States Enterprises. “Central States is the event sponsor, so we really appreciate them doing that,” Hatten said. Others expected to participate include: Purdue
University corn expert and professor of agronomy Robert L. Nielson; Purdue soybean expert and assistant professor of agronomy Shaun N. Casteel; Purdue professor of agricultural economics Christopher A. Hurt; and David Kohli, a commodities analyst for the Fort Wayne branch office of Allendale Inc. Rob Winters, the farm director of WOWO, will emcee the event. Hatten said U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., and U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, also have been invited to attend.
Hatten said the crunch of legislation might keep Stutzman in Washington. “So he might be stuck there,” Hatten said. “But if not, he will be here. He’s been here in the past. He’s a big supporter.” Hatten said the Indiana Pork Producers Association is donating the pork for the sandwiches. “We’re expecting a really good day,” Hatten said. $40,000 Lincoln grant helps Science Central Science Central, a Fort Wayne gateway to informal science education, has received a $40,000 grant from the Lincoln Financial Foundation for the center’s Lincoln Financial Foundation Demonstration Theater. The theater is the keystone of Science Central’s internal demonstration programs, providing a setting where students and visitors of all ages can participate in hands-on science demonstrations and activities. Lincoln Foundation has been the primary sponsor for the programs and events taking place in the theater space, and for supplies needed to conduct the demonstrations provided daily. Lincoln Foundation has funded the purchase of numerous items for the theater, including an
Electrostatic Generator; air pressure equipment; Tornado Gun; sound system upgrades; and even ingredients needed to make liquid nitrogen ice cream, a favorite Science Central activity. Funding also assists with programming for special events, such as Doctors Day and Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown Day. “We are very grateful to Lincoln Foundation for their ongoing support of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Demonstration Theater,” said Science Central Executive Director Martin S. Fisher. “Our job at Science Central is to help pique an interest in science, show real-world connections to science, and hopefully even inspire people to pursue careers that involve science, technology, engineering and

took extra time to prepare this year. “People have been walking into my office to get the schedule, and calling on the phone, and they start calling the middle of April,” she said. “This year we’re going to have something new, a concert after school starts, on the 21st of August,” she said. “People said ‘Nobody cares that school has started. Go ahead and have more music.’” “It’s just something that has grown and grown,” Krisher said of the concert series. “It’s paid for by Aboite Township taxpayers,” she said. “It’s not a county park; it’s a township park.” Many taxpayers enjoy the park’s sports programs, or have children or grandchildren who enjoy the playground. “This is something especially for people who don’t see it on a regular basis,” she said. “I just feel that it’s another way for the taxpayer to take advantage of something that we have as a township.” The bands are well-known in the Fort Wayne area, she said. Many of the bands have ties to nearby neighborhoods in Aboite Township.

Jesters program serves artists with disabilities The Jesters program at the University of Saint Francis will offer a free performing arts program for people with disabilities on Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m. on July 30, Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Sept. 3 at the USF dance studio in the back of the North Campus building. The six-week summer program will include dance/ movement, stories, theatre, percussion and music (instrumental and voice) activities, and will create a template for next year’s Jesters performance in spring 2014. Participants may take part in the performance, but are not required to do so. The program is free to anyone with a disability, regardless of his
or her involvement with the traditional Jesters program held annually September through March. Sponsored by USF since its founding in 1978, the Jesters is a performing group of people with mild to severe developmental/ physical disabilities. Each year, the program provides 20 weeks of customized, structured performing arts activities. Each spring, the Jesters program culminates in an original multi-media performance. The purpose of the Jesters is to enhance quality of life for people with disabilities by engaging them in the creative arts. The vision is to help people with
disabilities develop self-expression, self-esteem, socialization and other life skills while providing learning opportunities to the USF community and the community at large. The program is made possible in part through funding by the AWS Foundation. The Police Athletic League Inc. is taking registration for the tackle football program. Players must be age 9 to age 12 on determination day, which is Aug. 15. Call (260) 432-2122. PAL requests a donation of $70 per family. Waivers are available for families in hardship. The donation includes all equipment. PAL will organize 13 teams of 43 players each, with games to be played at schools around Allen County. Players of all experience levels are guaranteed game time. Practice begins Aug. 17. League games begin after Labor Day. The tournament begins Oct. 12 and ends with the PAL Bowl Oct. 26 at Homestead High School. Teams will be divided into a north division and a south division, said Steve Butz, program coordinator. “We break it down to a junior varsity green team, a junior varsity orange team, and then a varsity team,” he said. “So it’s actually three teams within one team.” Those divisions ensure that each athlete receives playing time, he said. “Our No. 1 emphasis at this age is to go out and learn skills involved in tackle football,” he said. “Along with that comes life lessons, and that goes along with winning and losing. Everybody wants to win, but not everybody can win, so we’re trying to get each of them to give their best effort and we’ll go from there.” “And that way when you come into middle school. and you have to determine which sports are right for you, you have some exposure to football and you can make a choice,” Butz said. Butz said the program is a fixture in Fort Wayne. “When we first started back in ’69 it was all police officers doing the program, but because of all the programs going on we had to extend it to other people,” he said. “So right now it’s more citizen volunteers, but we have a few police officers sprinkled in there, too.” Butz said the Fort Wayne program served former NFL players Rod Woodson, in 1977, and Jason Fabini, in 1984. PAL also offers basketball, cheerleading, ballet, and self-defense programs. The PAL Center is at 2121 Olladale Drive.
