communities ASHLEY Industrial expansion and development are on the agenda of the Town of Ashley as it progresses through 2013. Late last year TRIN Inc., a global automotive par ts supplier in Ashley, committed to expand its operations, adding 75 jobs. The company announced it would expand its facilities by up to 4 6,000 square feet with a projected capital investment of approximately $19 million over the next five years. Two other industries are looking to expand in Ashley, and one or two industries are looking at locating in the community, according to town officials. The reconstruction of C.R. 800S to the Family Dollar Distribution Center in Ashley also will be completed this year. The road runs along the DeKalb-Steuben count y line from I-69 at Ashley to Hamilton. Plans also call for the resurfacing of S.R. 4 through Ashley. GOVERNMENT: A three-member town council meets on the second Monday of eac h month. Council members are Don Farrington, president, Randy McEntarfer and Mike Hasselman. The clerk-treasurer is Karen McEntarfer, 587-9276. The official town website is ashley.in.gov. EDUCATION: Country Meadow Elementary School is two miles south of town at C.R. 10 and C.R. 23, serving students from Ashley, Fairfield and Smithfield townships and a portion of Richland Township. The school’s phone numbers are 920-1017 and 587-3371. The town is part of DeKalb Central

United School District, and junior and senior high sc hool students attend DeKalb Middle School and DeKalb High School, between Auburn and Waterloo. RECREATION: Ashley has four parks. Ashley Memorial Park is located on South Union Street under the “smiley” water tower. Sunset Park is at the west end of Ruby and Pearl streets. Carpenter Field is on Ashley’s north side on North Grand Avenue. A children’s playground is outside the Ashley Communit y Center on South Gonser. The Ashley Community Center also offers a gym and fitness center. HEALTH: Cameron Hospital in Angola and DeKalb Health hospital in Auburn both are approximately 15 minutes away. UTILITIES: Residents use the town’s water and sewage systems. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. provides electricity and natural gas. POLICE: Scott Barnhart is the town marshal. AUBURN Auburn is expected to see one of its busiest years in 2013. A sanitary sewer separation on the cit y’s north side

should be completed in 2013, and major rehabilition work on Betz Road and Grandstaff Drive will be done. Seventh Street (S.R. 8) will be repaved, but also will see a new, larger water line inst alled, putting to an end years of line breaks along the stretch. The completion of Auburn Essential Services as a television provider is scheduled to wrapped up this year. GOVERNMENT: Auburn has a mayor and sevenmember common council. Two at-large council members and five district members serve four-year terms. The council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. in Cit y Hall. City officials are Mayor Norman Yoder, ClerkTreasurer Patricia Miller, and council members Kevin Webb, David Painter, Marilyn Gearhart, Dick Stahly, Michael Walter, Jim Finchum and Dennis Ketzenberger. Board of Public Works and Safety members are Yoder, Jack Randinelli and Danny McAfee. The city’s website is ci.auburn.in.us. EDUCATION: Students attend DeKalb High School and DeKalb Middle School north of the city, with two elementary schools, McKenney-Harrison and J.R. Watson, in Auburn. All are par t of the DeKalb Central United School District. Lakewood Park Christian School lies south of Auburn on C.R. 29. RECREATION: Facilities in Auburn include two branches of the YMCA of DeKalb County, the Skatin’ Station, the Auburn Recreation Center bowling lanes, Bridgewater Golf Club, NCG Cinemas and the AuburnGarrett Drive-in on S.R. 8 west of Garrett.

BUTLER With the movement of Butler government offices into the restored Thompson Block building in the 200 block of South Broadway in 2012, attention now turns to pursuing grants for future improvements. Last year, with a federal grant and local funds, Butler erected three new tornado warning sirens. Next on the agenda is pursuit of a Safe Routes to Sc hool sidewalk grant. Butler already has received a planning grant that will include a study of the cit y’s sidewalk inventory and examining routes used to and from schools. Once the study is completed, cit y leaders expect to apply for a sidewalk construction grant. POLICE: Chief Jim Nichols heads a department of six full-time officers and nine reser ves. CORUNNA Corunna lies along the south side of U.S. 6. T he Norfolk Southern railroad runs east-west through the center of town, and S.R. 327 runs north-south through the community. The town is home to Albright’s SuperMarket at the corner of U.S. 6 and S.R. 327. A new fire station on the

north side of U.S. 6 is the site of popular fundraising fish fry meals, served every other Friday evening during much of the year. GOVERNMENT: A three-member town council consists of Lori Hyde, Jay Christian and Steve F aulkner. The clerk-treasurer is Sandy Lynch. The council’s regular meetings occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in Town Hall on S.R. 327 (Bridge Street). EDUCATION: Elementary students attend Country Meadow Elementary School at C.R. 23 and C.R. 10 south of Ashley. Older students attend DeKalb Middle School and DeKalb High School, both on C.R. 427 south of Waterloo. GARRETT A dedication ceremony was held Jan. 20 for the new Garrett High School building. The two-story building offers a state-of-the-art, 21st century school with four specific classrooms to promote project-based learning, plus a media and fine ar ts center. The school was completed in time for the first day of school in August 2012. “Heritage Street,” a main hallway through the school, features Garrett memorabilia celebrating the history of Garrett High School and the Garrett community. The exterior design of the building combines the look of an old train depot with elements of the existing Garrett High School, originally built in 1922. The Garrett Police Department joined Auburn and Waterloo departments in a new countywide dispatch program in June. Garrett leaders are working on a t ax levy to form a new fire protection district that includes the cit y and Keyser Township. Altona town leaders expressed interest in joining the district in the future. T he fire protection territory process is being revisited followed denial at the state level last year. Improvement to the city’s wastewater treatment process will begin in 2013 in order to meet Clean W ater Act requirements. The city was under an Aug. 31, 2012,

deadline to either take action on a proposed treatment system or do nothing and risk heft y fines in cases of overflows. An agreed order with the Indiana Depar tment of Environmental Management expired at the end of August. Estimated cost for the project is $3.9 million. GOVERNMENT: Tonya Hoeffel is the city’s mayor. City council members are Bradley Stump, Todd Sattison, Amanda Charles, Brenda Wigginton and Tim Vogel. The clerk-treasurer is Marcie Conkle with Milton Ortero as city planner and Dan Brinkerhoff as cit y attorney. EDUCATION: Garrett-Keyser-Butler School Corp. includes Garrett High School, Garrett Middle School and J.E. Ober Elementary School on East Houston Street. Matt Smith is the high school principal and Linda DePew is the middle school principal. Tonya Weaver is the elementary school principal. School board members are Wayne Funk, president; Chris Hoeffel, vice president; Tony Griffin, secretary; and Dan Weimer and Terry Yarde, members. The school superintendent is Dennis Stockdale. St. Joseph Catholic School at 301 W. Houston St. offers elementary education through eighth grade. The principal is Kristine Call. RECREATION: Feick Park on Garrett’s southwest side includes the Garrett community pool, which features a giant water slide, and several ball diamonds and basketball courts. The city has three neighborhood parks: East Side Park on East King Street, West Side Park on Ijams Street and Union Street P ark. Ocker

Park’s 20-acre site is on the cit y’s north side on West Railroad Street features a stocked pond for fishing and picnic area and pavilion. Heritage Park with a railroading museum is off Randolph Street on the north side of the railroad. UTILITIES: Garrett Municipal Utilities distributes power generated by American Electric Power Co. and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. supplies natural gas. Water and sewer services are provided by the cit y. The telephone company is Frontier. POLICE: Chief Keith Hefner oversees a st aff of 13 fulltime officers, including one investigator. The department also has one full time administrative assist ant, three part-time officers and four reserve officers. Four reserves are currently undergoing training that should be activated by summer. The Garrett Police Department also utilizes two German Shepherd canines. Dispatching is now handled by DeKalb Count y Central Communications. The Garrett Police Station is located at 200 N. Cowen St. FIRE: The Garrett Fire Department operates out of a six-bay station at 200 N. Cowen St. Fire Chief Dana Treesh and 30 volunteer firefighters provide fire protection for area residents and businesses. David Mix ser ves as the deparment’s chaplain. HEALTH CARE: Miller’s Merry Manor nursing home is on S.R. 327 (South Randolph Street) and is the base for the Garrett unit of DeKalb E MS. DeKalb Health operates a medical clinic in downtown Garrett. Garrett has two dentists, an optometrist and a c hiropractor.

communities Garrett is home to St. Mar tin’s Healthcare Clinic, 1359 S. Randolph St., which provides health care for uninsured residents of DeKalb County. POST OFFICE: 115 W. Keyser St. LIBRARY: Garrett Public Library, on the corner of Houston and Randolph streets, serves Garrett, and Keyser and Butler townships. The building is handicapaccessible. An expansion plan to add a 6,5 00 squarefeet two story addition was approved in mid-February to include additional children and youth areas, two meeting rooms for adults and a second elevator at a new entr y on the south side of the building. T he estimated cost is $1.5 million. The library opened on April 24, 1915. POPULATION: 6,300 is the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimate.

HAMILTON Hamilton lies on the border of Steuben and DeKalb counties and is known for its scenic lakes. The town’s economy is based around tourism at Hamilton Lake, which covers about 800 acres. Downtown Hamilton is located along the south shore of the lake, offering many restaurants, merchants, and professional services. Fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts flock to the town each summer to the lakes and wildlife. The town is looking forward to the completion of the reconstruction of C.R. 800S this summer. The road runs along the DeKalb-Steuben county line from I-69 at

Ashley to Hamilton. The town plans to pave about t wo miles of streets this summer and also expects subst antial growth in the Crystal Bay and Crystal Cove subdivisions. Renovations are taking place at Gnagy Park and the ball fields as part of a team effort between the Hamilton Park Board and Summer League. Updates are being made to the town’s website, hamiltonindiana.org, to make it more user-friendly and to promote activities taking place in the community. GOVERNMENT: The Hamilton Town Council meets on the first Monday of eac h month at 7 p.m. Town Council members are president Mar y Vail, vice

SPENCERVILLE Spencerville is best known for its historic covered bridge, built in 1873. It crosses the St. Joseph River just east of town. The bridge was severely damaged in September 2012 when a semi driver attempted to cross the bridge. The bridge is being rebuilt. GOVERNMENT: Spencerville is not an incorporated town. The Town of Waterloo has received a $1.82 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and a $4.9 million commitment from Amtrak to build a new passenger train station. The station, to be built on the east side of Center Street, will sit on the nor th side of the tracks and will be heated and lighted, with passenger platforms on both sides of the tracks. It will be handicap-accessible and include restrooms. The Waterloo Amtrak station services 19,000-20,000 riders annually, ranking it near the busiest in the st ate. Construction on the new station is expected to begin this year.
