ANGOLA — When it comes to picking wedding colors, usually the bride makes the decision. “Actually, it’s the bride who determines when they look for dresses and try to match it,” said Mitch Davis, proprietor of Mitchell’s Clothing and Tuxes, Angola. “Every guy will say, ‘it’s what she wants.’ If you have any questions — go black (with tuxedos).” Davis said currently, the big colors in tuxedos are bright and all hues of purple, golds, Malibu blue and lime. Then, there’s camouflage for the hunting enthusiast. “Cummerbunds are coming back with bow ties, tails. The big thing is
slim-fitting tuxedos that are more form fitting,” he said. “There’s slider ties, adjustable clips, pre-tied ties. There’s two styles of pants — pleat front and plain fronts. All tuxedo pants are adjustable waist and there’s notch lapels.” Workers at Baker’s Acres, Angola, also said bright colors are in with currently every shade of green and blue big for weddings, with pink still being used. Bridal bouquets are usually handtied with a variety of colorful flowers used with the likes of homegrown lilies, alstromeria, hydrangeas and calla lilies. At aboutflowersblog.com, the top color trends this fall are: tangerine tango (a strong orange red), solar power, bell flower, cabaret, margarita, sweet lilac and cockatoo. Flower trends are roses, gerbeia, stock, carnations, delphinium, asters and orchids. The top colors of roses are milva, an orange-coral blend, conga, a bright yellow, and charlotte, a dark, velvety textured rose. The most memorable ingredient of most wedding receptions is generally not the dance scene or the table centerpieces or even the flowing booze. It’s the food. A good cut of meat or nicely prepared chicken breast can be a longtime talking point for a wedding goer. A robust buffet with hit sides can make a reception remarkable. Such an integral part of that special event doesn’t come without a price tag, either, and caters say marrying a budget with a quality
menu is the tricky formula that can make a reception. Todd Carteaux, co-owner of the St. James in Avilla, said when a couple comes into his restaurant to talk reception grub, his first question is budget, and most of the time, the bride and groom will answer it before he asks. “One of the first concerns would be the budget and how many guests they have in their party,� said Carteaux. “The bride and groom must have it figured out how much they can afford and what they can serve within that budget, so the first
thing you have to do is establish a budget. “To be honest, the driving factor is the budget.� For Erika Jordan and her husband Brian, who tied the knot in June, the Auburn couple’s main concern was what to feed their guests, and — more importantly — Brian, who Erika described as “really picky.� The couple hired a wedding planner to manage their event, and after the Jordan’s gave her a budget, she returned with a menu of food options that fit within it. What developed was a ham and chicken meal that “everyone absolutely loved,” said Erika. “Really, our main thing was, what do we think everyone’s going to like?” said Erika. “We were on a budget, definitely, and it was hard trying to get everything to fit into that budget, but (the wedding planner) had a whole list of stuff we could choose from and we chose what we wanted.” For those without budgetary restraints, Carteaux said there’s a dining experience to fit any reception. Reception cuisine at the St. James starts at $13.95 per guest and includes a buffet of chicken, three side dishes, salad, dessert, baked bread and a beverage. Cost goes up from there. If a couple wants two meats or three meats on their spread, plan on opening the wallet more and more, because “the most entrees you have, the higher the cost is,” said Carteaux. And if the bride and groom want to class things up a bit, well, there’s a dinner to suit that, too. The St. James has a plated dinner option that allows guests to pick their dinner from a menu as if they are dining at a restaurant. Those formal cuisine options can include prime rib, New York strip, rib-eye, chicken, cod or shrimp, with a bevy of side options to complement.

said he’ll order in whatever a bride and groom desires — again, at a price. “We try to be flexible,” he said. “Everybody has different needs and we try to meet the needs of our guests.” Carteaux said the St. James’ goal is to service and please not just the bride and groom, but every guest, to make the event as enjoyable as possible, and the same hope goes into the initial cuisine selection process. Choosing a cuisine should be a fun experience, he said. For the Jordans, it was. “It was very enjoyable,” said Erika Jordan. “We got to taste it and everything first, so it was a lot of fun.”

While the wedding season is typically from May until October, getting married during the holidays is another option. The season can bring extra joy with the backdrop of wintry weather, family gatherings and thanksgiving. Paul Greibel, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church has married couples the Saturday after Thanksgiving, during Christmastime and in smaller private ceremonies on New Year’s Day. He considers it a beautiful time of the year to get married. “Christmas is the greatest expression of God’s love for us,” he said. “It’s a beautiful expression of the couple’s love.” With all the seasonal bliss, and holiday festivities, getting married during holidays can create a different set of circumstances for couples: there are clear disadvantages and advantages. There is no perfect time to get married; however, it is good to be aware of the issues that can arise during the holiday season. “It’s obvious that people are already very busy,” Greibel said. Here are things to consider when getting married during the holiday season: • Consider your guests. Many already have family obligations during the holidays and it’s one of the busiest times of the year. Fewer guests may be able to attend. for a wedding. If you have a hard time deciding what colors to choose, this is a clear advantage. Also, it can cut your decorating budget in half. However, if you prefer colors that do not mix with red, green or gold, this may be a disadvantage. • Plan the wedding strategically. If Christmas falls on Friday, most clergy members would prefer not having a wedding on a Saturday. Greibel suggests having the wedding a week before or after Christmas. • Be aware of church services. Many churches have Christmas Eve or Christmas Days services, and some may have Advent services, plays or choir concerts during the season. • Banquet halls sometimes decorate for the holiday season, requiring little to no decorations. However, this is not always the norm. The ACD Automobile Museum in Auburn shies away from this trend to offer customers the option to decorate for any occasion. Be sure to ask the facility if they decorate for the season. • There’s a trick to choosing flowers. Brides do not have to go the typical route of gold and glitter on flowers. according to Wilson, flowers during this time should not rise in price. Instead, the most expensive time to buy flowers is Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. • Don’t forget about the weather. Winter weather is always fickle and there is no prediction of what will happen. Remember that out-of-town guests may be delayed because of snow or inclement weather. • Always start early on everything, but if you have your heart set on getting married during this time of year, reception halls fill up fast. Most are booked a year in advance for corporate Christmas parties and family functions. December is the busiest season; however, November and January are the slow months. Some halls may offer discounts during this time. • Consider the extra cost for holiday labor. Catering services charge more for labor on a holiday, such as New Year’s Day or New Year’s Eve. • Remember the feeling of the season. While there is no perfect time to get married, the holiday season can be wonderful time for couples to share their love with friends and family.

Photographer prepares for wedding … on other side of the lens BY ABBEY MEYER abbey@ameyerphoto.com. I eat, sleep and breathe weddings. As owner of A. Meyer Photography, for the last four years, I have been helping brides and grooms remember the biggest day of their lives. Along with photography, I’ve helped brides with everything from figuring out their ceremony order and wedding colors to picking out their wedding dress. I attend at least 20 weddings a year. But now I’m the bride-to-be. My fiancé, Caleb, and I met when we were freshmen at Valparaiso University. Our relationship was textbook “meant-to-be.” He and I quickly became true best friends and started dating only a week after we met. It was a whirlwind relationship. We graduated together this spring, and now we’re racing against time again to finish planning our wedding. I was told wedding planning was going to be tough. Caleb and I are a few weeks shy of a year into our engagement, but it still feels as if we have another year’s worth of things to do to get ready for our day in November. Caleb has tried his best to be as involved in the planning as he possibly can, bless his heart, but there’s only so much a math teacher like himself can do. A majority of wedding planning requires a large dose of artistic creativity, which he lacks greatly. He’s made up for it, though, by taking care of other things that need to be done in order

to become husband and wife — things they don’t mention on TLC — such as finding a place to live, applying for credit cards and “bringing home the bacon” to pay for our rent. In all other areas, my mother has been heaven-sent. She took the catering and reservations under her wing, and has done an amazing job at organizing every last detail. I’d be a mess without her! University’s campus. We met, attended church every week and were engaged in this chapel. As for the reception, we chose the lobby of the art center, just steps away from the ceremony. We both have been employed there, and as an art major, I spent most of my college career in the classrooms of this building! Most of the other decisions were also easy. While shooting other weddings, I compiled in my head likes and dislikes. The bridesmaid dresses are to be teal like a wedding I shot in Chicago — tuxes are to be gray like the wedding in Grand Rapids. I want yellow Craspedia flowers, also known as “Billy Buttonsâ€? on every table, like the wedding in Valparaiso ‌ and am inspired to have a candy buffet instead of a cake like the wedding in Indianapolis. A group of photographers who I’ve been in fellowship with for the last few years will shoot our wedding. abbey@ameyerphoto.com “Guys, guys, you have to come see this, there’s something strange happening outside!� I watched the chapel soundman run down the aisle toward us. “Quick before it stops!� he yelled. “I thought I saw lights!� I followed everyone down to the front doors of the chapel, hiding behind my band mates, scared to death I was going to see glowing orbs or aliens on the lawn. It was pitch dark outside, except for the glow from the chapel on the prayer labyrinth. I saw a figure sitting on a ledge. After my eyes adjusted, I realized it was Caleb. He was all dressed up in his hakis and a nice shirt and had a little box in his hand. I immediately knew what was happening, and stood at the door, still
hiding behind the guys, and started crying. Caleb motioned for me to come closer. I stumbled over to him, barely able to see through my tears. Wedding receptions can and should be fun, unique BY BOB BUTTGEN If you’re looking for some creative ideas to incorporate into your wedding reception, don’t be afraid to think outside the traditional wedding box. There are plenty of ways to wow your guests and leave your mark on the big day. Alyssa Miller, events and marketing manager the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, has seen her fair share of wedding receptions. Here are a few trends Miller has spottted at wedding receptions held at her venue. • Food Stations. “Where instead of plated or buffet style meals we are seeing a lot of stations where it is a mashed potato bar, fajita bar, salad station or a kids station,” she said. • Candy Bars. Use them with the color scheme to match wedding colors. Miller also has seen popcorn bars with different flavors of popcorn.

• Pre-wedding reveals. The bride and groom have a pre-wedding reveal and most do it for the privacy and intimacy that it allows, but then it also allows them to get pictures together before the wedding so they can join the reception immediately after the ceremony • Unique guestbook. Guestsbooks have dramatically changed in the past year or so with photo booksigning, photo booths, thumb print trees, Polaroid, photos of th ecouple that guests are invited to sign, picture frames, etc. There’s also the idea of giving your guest disposable cameras but with the advent of digital photography, that trend has slowed down. At a wedding reception held recently in Ligonier, a humorous photo of the couple was handed out and guests were invited to write a funny caption for the photo. The DJ then read most of them to the audience.

Other wedding reception trends from around the nation include: • S’mores bar. Talk to your caterer or venue to set up a bar focused on grown-up version of the traditional child-hood favorite, complete with graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate, caramel, Nutella or liquer-infused dipping sauces in a toasting station. • Sports bar. If there’s a big game on your wedding day, prevent guests from constantly checking their phones for the score and embrace it. Set up a small, special area at your reception with a bigscreen TV where guests can periodically catch up on the action. Add a few gameday-style appetizers and special décor, such as a patch of Astroturf and barware and napkins with your fave team’s logo or mascot, to highlight the area. • Cupcake decorating station. Also, wedding planners suggest having your emcee or the person giving the welcome speech recognize the people who came from out of town and the states or countries from where they came. It makes those people feel special. Another tip offered: Seat the older guests away from the DJ or band’s speakers, and the younger guests closer to the speakers. Older guests are much more sensitive to music than your friends.

Weddings are filled with many emotions: happiness, excitement and anticipation, to name a few. With all of the positive emotions a wedding may drum up, in the mix there may be a few negative ones, including feelings of being overwhelmed at all the details that need to be completed on a deadline. One aspect of wedding planning that tends to send people into panic is wedding reception seating arrangements. The thought of having 200 friends and family members together under one roof — and then attempting

to seat them next to an acceptable group of people — can cause some couples to hyperventilate. Every family has its ups and downs, and there are certain people who get along well and a few who clash. Ensuring that a wedding is memorable for all the right reasons (and not for the brawl at table 3) is why seating arrangements are so important. Many couples can use a little advice when seating guests, while others would love another person to handle the seating arrangements for them. • Place yourselves, as well as the bridal party, at a separate table that is in a prime location in the room. Be sure to allow the spouses or dates of bridal party members at the same table so couples remain together. • Some couples choose to seat both sets of parents at one table together — the parents’ table. Grandparents may also be seated at this table, depending on the number of people each table can accommodate. • If children under the age of 7 are invited, they should be seated with their parents. Children between ages 7 and 14 can be seated at a separate kids’ table. • Be mindful of guests with disabilities or mobility issues. Seat them close to the door, bathrooms or food station. A wedding-day toast doesn’t have to cause stress BY METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
Wedding days are typically steeped in tradition. Whether it’s the hours before the wedding or the bride’s attire or the first dance, it seems no aspect of a couple’s big day isn’t accompanied by some ages-old tradition. One of the more enjoyable wedding day traditions is the toast. Once the reception has begun, the maid of honor and the best man are trusted to toast the new bride and groom. Such toasts are typically heartfelt and humorous, but there are also a few guidelines to follow
to ensure the toast is memorable for all the right reasons. • Stand up! Stand up when delivering a wedding toast. Sitting down won’t command the guests’ attention, and your voice likely won’t carry as well if you’re sitting down. • Don’t go too long. A good wedding toast shouldn’t stretch beyond five minutes. Long-winded toasts could come off as rambling and incoherent, and the guests will likely tune out if the toast goes longer than five minutes. • Introduce yourself. Just because you’re a maid of honor or a best man doesn’t mean all of the guests know your relationship with the bride or groom.
Make it brief, but provide an explanation of your relationship. • Keep the toast appropriate. Many adults who have been to a wedding or two in their day have a story about a wedding toast gone awry. While these stories are humorous, no best man or maid of honor wants to have similar stories told about his or her toasts. Make the toast appropriate, keeping in mind there might be some younger guests in attendance. In addition, avoid references to past relationships. Such references are awkward and uncomfortable. • Don’t make it an “inside” joke. Maids of honor or best men are typically close friends or siblings of the bride and See TOAST page 18

way all guests can understand. • Make it personal. A personal anecdote is a nice touch. Such anecdotes can be about anything, whether it’s the first time you met your friend’s nowspouse or, if you’re not related to the
bride or groom, how you met. • Steer clear of the bar before the toast. Many a well-intentioned wedding toast has gone horribly wrong thanks to alcohol. Maids of honor and best men should abstain from alcohol before their toasts to avoid embarrassing themselves and the bride and groom. If you’re especially nervous, maybe a drink can help calm your nerves. But if you’re going to drink before the toast, be sure to drink only in moderation. • Practice beforehand. Very few people can survive “wingingâ€? a wedding toast. Practice the toast beforehand so you’re comfortable with what you’re going to say before the moment arrives. • Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Weddings are typically laid back and fun affairs, so don’t stress about giving the perfect toast. If the toast comes off as genuine and stays appropriate, it’s a good toast.

Fillings help make flavorful cakes BY MICHAEL HAYNES
mhaynes@kpcnews.net FREMONT — Buttercream and vanilla wedding cakes are traditional choices for any wedding. For a more flavorful cake option, cakes with filling can be an alternative. Kay Kunce of Fremont is the superintendent of Steuben County’s 4-H cake decorating contest. She has been making cakes when she can for her family and friends for more than 30 years. Kunce said cakes with fillings makes it moist and gives it more flavor. “It gives it another texture and taste,” said Kunce. Fillings in cakes are becoming more and more popular, according to Kunce.
Wedding facts • “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Lady in Red” are the two most popular first dance songs (even though 87 percent of brides wear white). • Only 19 percent of couples rely on a wedding planner. • Ancient Romans broke a cake over the bride’s head to symbolize fertility. Today, brides must be fortunate to have only a little cake smashed in their faces! • The English believe a spider found in a wedding dress means good luck. • In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the best day to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health. • Ancient Romans studied pig entrails to determine the luckiest time to marry. • Seventeen tons of gold are made into wedding rings each year in the United States.
Jessica Myers, who is referred through Dutch Heritage Bakery in Spencerville, has been making cakes for about 14 years. “It’s sort of like having a piece of toast without jelly on it,” Myers said, comparing it to cakes without a filling layer. “Toast has its own flavor, but the jelly really gives it some pizzazz.” Cakes with filling are made by putting a thin layer of filling on top of one cake and putting another cake layer on top of the filling. Fillings can be fruit fillings, such as strawberry, cherry, raspberry, apple, lemon or other flavors, like cream cheese or chocolate Bavarian cream. See FLAVORFUL CAKES page 22

Kunce said she likes putting raspberry filling in her cakes. “It’s my family’s favorite,” she said. Myers said a chocolate Bavarian cream cake with raspberry filling is a good combination. “My mom thinks a raspberry cake with lemon filling is the ticket,” said Myers. “She thinks it’s the bomb.” Myers did warn that sometimes the weight of tiered wedding cakes can be a problem if the cake is not done right. “You have the risk of the possibility of it oozing,” Myers said. Though buttercream and vanilla cakes can be good, Kunce said cakes with fillings can be a flavorful choice. “It does add to the cake,” Kunce said. “It’s more colorful … and has better flavor.”
