While paper and canvas were — and continue to be her primary media — she has added another form of expression to her pallet, opening B&B Tattoo at 108 E. Oak St. earlier this month. Opening the business came at the urging of Bonifer’s daughter and her daughter’s fiance. “They were going to do it, and they encouraged me to try it,” Heather Bonifer explained. “I had thought about doing it years and years ago, but I just never did it. Bonifer’s husband John pitched in by buying a tattooing kit. “I’ve been very busy,” she

said, shortly after putting the finishing touches on a tattoo for Tom Davis. While tattoo artists can sanitize tips and needles, Bonifer prefers to use new ones for each and every client. She bases her fees on the complexity of the design. Before she begins inking a design, Bonifer makes sure the client is ready to proceed. “Take time to think about what you want,” Bonifer said. “Make sure where you want it.” Business hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Additional hours are by appointment by calling 908-5739. “I love doing it,” she said. “My kids are older and in school now. I’m not in it to get rich. I’m in it because I like it.”

The Eastside Area Community Foundation, represented by president Jerry Markle, recently presented school supplies for students at Butler Elementary School. Principal Kim Clark was pleased to receive the heaping mound of pens and pencils, crayons, colored pencils, spiral notebooks, rulers, erasers and book bags. The Eastside Foundation plans to award up to $7,000 in grants this fall.

BUTLER — The Eastside Area Community Foundation will award up to $7,000 in grants this fall to worthwhile organizations in eastern DeKalb County, including the Butler, St. Joe and Spencerville areas. While primarily known for awarding scholarships to graduating seniors at Eastside Junior-Senior High School, another arm of the foundation is to support community projects when possible. An example of this is a recent gift of $500 in school supplies to Butler Elementary School. “Because of revenues on our investments, it allows us to set aside $7,000 to be awarded in grants for other community projects within the Eastside district,” explained foundation president Jerry Markle. “We are excited to be able to offer this in grants this year, and hope we are able to reach out and support areas in our community that are normally not reached.” Grant applications are available ➤ Foundation, Page 6

Blazers beat Railroaders 46-22 BY JEFF JONES jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — The Train Trophy is getting a new letter. For the first time in 10 years, and for the first time since the trophy was placed in competition, the award given to the winner of the Eastside-Garrett football game will stay in Butler for a year. Midway through the third quarter Friday, the Blazers broke open what had been a back-and-forth affair with three straight touchdowns on the way to a 46-22 win over the Railroaders. The Blazers piled up 478 yards of total offense for the night, but it was two defensive stops in the third quarter that turned the game decisively in their favor. The teams had just traded third-quarter scores — a 5-yard run by Garrett’s Bryit Sumner and conversion run that put the Railroaders on top 22-21, and a 1-yard run by Eastside’s P.J. Dean that put the hosts back in front, 27-22. The Blazer defense put up a three-and-out, forcing a Garrett punt with just over four minutes to play. It took Eastside just one play — a 60-yard TD run by Dean and Trever Jokoty’s extra point kick — to make it 34-22. On Garrett’s next posses-

Dove, a freshman, completed 8-of-17 passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns. “It means a lot,” said Eastside senior Ryan Liechty as he passed the wooden rivalry trophy among teammates and coaches. “This means everything. It’s awesome.” “It’s something we haven’t felt in a long time,” Renier added. “It’s something for our senior legacy. We’ll always be known for bringing the trophy to Eastside.”

This was Eastside’s first win over Garrett since a 14-7 overtime win in 2004. It is the Blazers’ first time to win the “Train Trophy” since the rivalry award was introduced in 2005. Garrett had won all 10 meetings for the Train Trophy, and leads the all-time series 27-12. The Train Trophy, made by Garrett teacher Jim Slain, is adorned with brass plaques, bearing the year, final score and school logo of the winning team since the cross-county rivals first played in 1981. Because the two teams are in different classes and won’t face each other in the post-season, the Blazers will retain the trophy until next year’s game. Eastside now sports chrome lightning bolts on both sides of its dazzling green helmets. Garrett continues to feature the big “G” on its helmets.

Volunteers needed for Relay For Life AUBURN — The Relay For Life of DeKalb County is in need of volunteers to be a part of the 2014 Relay planning committee. The event is in need of at least two volunteers to co-chair the event as well as volunteers to recruit and mentor fundraising teams, garner support through local businesses and sponsorships, plan entertainment and lend a hand. The volunteers ensure the success of the 2014 Relay For Life of DeKalb County. torres@cancer.org. Relay For Life is a life changing event, that is truly a volunteer driven and implemented event, from start to finish. Relay For Life is a fun and inspirational event that brings together families, friends, businesses, hospitals, schools and faith-based groups to celebrate the lives of those who have had cancer, remember those who lost their battle and to fight back against the disease. Relay For Life is the community’s chance to unite in the fight against cancer and support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Volunteers and participants who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event are making a commitment to let our community know that cancer can be defeated. The event is held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at DeKalb High School with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening, signifying that cancer never sleeps. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but are also encouraged to hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay For Life and continue to raise funds after the event.

POLICE REPORTS Police make arrest Christopher W. Karacson, 33, of the 600 block of C.R. 73, Hamilton, was arrested at 3:11 a.m. Aug. 23 by Butler Police on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated at the Class A and Class C misdemeanor levels.

Backing driver strikes vehicle BUTLER — The vehicles of two Butler men were damaged when one backed out of a parking space into the other at 9:02 p.m. Aug. 20, Butler Police said. Terry L. Burkett, 34, of the 100 block of South Broadway, was backing his 2000 Dodge Caravan from a parking space in the 100 block of West Main Street when he struck a 2008 Ford F-250 truck, driven by Wayne J. Mobley, 34, of the 200 block of West Oak Street.

Church group returns from mission trip BUTLER — The Butler United Methodist Church youth group, along with several adults, recently returned from a mission trip at Red Bird Missions in Beverley, Ky. The group — eight adults and 10 students — spent July 28 to Aug. 3 at the mission. They were split into two groups. One group traveled 45 minutes

BUTLER — A driver leaving a parking lot and a driver backing from a driveway collided in the 300 block of West Main Street at 2:45 p.m. Aug. 23, Butler Police said. Kay A. Shank, 64, of the 5500 block of C.R. 75, St. Joe, told police she was leaving a convenience store parking lot going east. Dale R. Rabineau, 58, of the 300 block of West Main Street, Butler, was backing from his driveway. Police said neither driver saw the other at the time of the collision. Total damage to Shank’s 2007 Chrysler Town & Country van and Rabineau’s 1998 GMC pickup was estimated to be $2,501-$5,000.
