A handful of events take place Friday, including a farmers market at 3 p.m. at the old Butler Fire Station, 120 W. Main St., and the Sons of the American Legion hosting a whole hog sausage dinner at 5 p.m. at the legion post

Blood drive coming to Butler BUTLER — The American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive in Butler from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21. People who are at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission in Indiana), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors age 18 and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. New band director hired BY JEFF JONES AND KATHRYN BASSETT jjones@kpcmedia.com kbassett@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Calling it “the hardest decision of my career,” marching band director James Graham is leaving Eastside High School to become DeKalb Middle School’s band director. In six years, Graham quickly helped build Eastside’s marching band and instrumental music programs into highly-respected groups. In November, under Graham’s direction, the Eastside Marching Blazer Pride band made its first-ever appearance at the Indiana State School Music Association state finals. Three times in the previous four years, the Blazers advanced to the semi-state level,

ASHLEY — The DeKalb County Genealogy Society will hold its annual banquet at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Masonic Lodge on Hobart Street, under the “Smiley Face” water tower in Ashley. Dave Fry will present a program about the Auburn Rubber Co., covering the history of the business and sharing photos of the company and its various toys. Keplinger’s foggy morning photo taken at her brother’s soccer practice garnered first-place in the youth photography category. Timmerman’s acrylic rendering of a dream catcher was first in youth art. Cosmo taught this kid how to laugh
50TH ANNIVERSARY

Jerome (Jerry) and Carolyn K. (Fogle) Vinson of St. Joe will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, Aug. 17. They were married Aug. 17, 1963 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Auburn while Jerry was home on leave from the U.S. Navy. They have three children and their spouses, Jeffery (Dana) Vinson and Curtus (Brenda) Vinson of St. Joe and Lisa (Scott) Carey of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and eight grandchildren. Jerry retired from B.F. Goodrich in 1994 after 30 years of service. Carolyn retired in 1996 after 20 years of service at Ralph Sechler & Sons. A surprise 50th anniversary celebration took place July 6.
You probably don’t know his name or his face, but if you grew up watching Captain Kangaroo like me, you saw Cosmo Allegretti’s work every morning. Allegretti, 86, died last month in Phoenix, Ariz. On Captain Kangaroo, Allegretti was the man behind puppets Bunny Rabbit and Mr. Moose. For those of you too young JUST to have enjoyed THINKING the show, OUT the silent LOUD Bunny Jeff Jones Rabbit played tricks on the Captain in order to snatch carrots from the Captain’s coat. The Allegretti-voiced Mr. Moose relished cracking knock-knock jokes and dropping Ping-Pong balls on the Captain.
Allegretti also donned a costume as Dancing Bear and provided voices for Grandfather Clock and the Magic Drawing Board. Originally deemed as “too tough” and scary to appear on the children’s show, Allegretti eventually did make on-screen appearances as Dennis the Apprentice. You don’t find shows like Captain Kangaroo anymore. Its popularity — spanning nearly 30 years, from 1955 to 1984 — demonstrates the quality of its message. Captain Kangaroo — the late Bob Keeshan — read stories and sang songs, and was a gentle, grandfather-type figure to his audience. Captain Kangaroo — and by extension Allegretti’s characters — left an impact on me. How could you not laugh when Mr. Moose managed to trick the Captain and drop those hundreds of Ping-Pong balls? The mischievous, spectacled Bunny Rabbit was resourceful when it came to sneaking a carrot from the Captain.

AREA DEATHS Robert Meyer EDGERTON, OHIO — Robert R. Meyer, 83, of Edgerton, Ohio, died at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 in his home after an extended illness. Mr. Meyer was a 1948 graduate of Edgerton High School, and served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. In the early 1960s he operated Meyer Foodland in Edgerton, and from Meyer 1965-1980, operated the Meyer Standard Oil Station in Butler, Indiana. He and his wife then operated Meyer Furniture in Butler for 15 years until their retirement in 1994. While in business, he
was active in the Butler Retail Merchants Association and the Butler Chamber of Commerce, was a charter member of the Butler Lions Club, and was a member of the Butler American Legion. He served two terms on the Edgerton Village Council, and in retirement, volunteered at the Edgerton Senior Center transporting senior citizens, and was a member of the Friends of the Edgerton Library Board. Robert R. Meyer was born on Jan. 17, 1930 in Edgerton, the son of Leonard H. and Goldie E. (Blaisdell) Meyer. He married Maxine R. Zerkle on Nov. 28, 1952 in Angola, and she survives. Also surviving are one son, Douglas (Ruth) Meyer of West Unity, Ohio; two daughters, Denise (Gary) Whonsetler of Huntertown, Indiana, and Donna (Joe McGill) Meyer of

band director at a nearby high school in northwest Ohio, Yoder explained.
