Prevent stormwater pollution by not blowing, sweeping, raking or hosing yard waste into the street, gutter, or storm drain. Alternatively, leave grass clippings on your lawn after mowing, or compost your clippings and yard waste. Whether it’s a new custom home or total renovation of an existing home, we employ the services of the finest tradespersons in the industry, each a craftsman in their respective trade. Either Mike Gepfert (Owner) or Justin Bell (Project Manager) is on-site almost daily ensuring the vision of the owners is effectively communicated to and carried out by each trade. To maintain that level of personal interaction, we intentionally limit the number of projects we undertake at one time. Our Parade entry this year, like many
homes we have built, started as a dream. My wife and I have owned our waterfront property on Lake George since 2001, however the property had actually been in my family since the mid-70’s. The existing cottage was not salvageable, and was non-conforming according to the current zoning standard, so tearing it down was the only option. We knew the design and construction of a new home would be a challenge – our lot is only 32’ wide – but we loved the location and decided to see what we could do with it. Initial sketches confirmed that getting a year-round home on our lot that was functional and aesthetically pleasing was going to be a challenge, but we were committed. So much so that I decided to double-down on the challenge and see if I could design a home that met all our needs and wants, fit on our lot, and did NOT require a single variance. The result is Long Tall Sally. At 20’ wide she is sleek, she is unique, and we hope you come and see her.
The design is primarily Craftsman-style with a few modern touches, some retro components, and a lot of fun. The main level consists of an oversize single-car garage/man-cave, a spacious foyer, a fun half-bath with a hammered-copper fish vessel sink bowl, a large kitchen with custom cabinets offering lots of storage, and a functional island with seating which flows into the dining and living areas. The second level houses 2 bedrooms, a flex room, and a spacious Master Suite with private balcony, walk-in closet, office, and Master Bath with custom-tiled walk-in steam shower. The attention to detail, creativity in design, and careful planning are evident throughout this home. There is no wasted space. Housing Trends for Baby Boomers New Features Keep Pace with this Active Generation Baby boomers, who were the largest American generation until the Millennials took over, are either retired or quickly nearing retirement age. Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964 and who count more than 76 million, may be getting older, but they are definitely not ready to head to the retirement home! The boomer generation is more active than generations past, has a more sophisticated style and wants options and choices in their homes. Whether they are selling the homes where they raised their children and heading to sunnier pastures, or staying put and redesigning to accommodate their retired lifestyle, boomers are making an impact on housing trends. Some features that home builders and remodelers are seeing as they begin to cater to the boomers include: Home Offices: Some boomers are choosing to work past the age of 65. As they transition from a traditional 9-to-5 job, however, they want home offices for flexibility. A second career or part-time employment often eliminates the hassle of commuting while keeping them active and bringing in supplementary income. Tech/Media Centers: The tech-savvy boomer generation wants top-of-the-line amenities for their homes such as a media room with surround sound and central control systems, which manage all media sources in one location. lighting and security features. Wider Doors and Hallways: As a person ages, there is a likelihood that use of a wheelchair might become a necessity. Designing a home that is livable now but can transition and be functional as the occupant ages is important in ensuring that the home will be a good long-term investment. Better Lighting/Bigger Windows: The need for more lighting usually increases as we grow older. To accommodate this, builders are adding more windows and making them larger to let in more natural light. They are also adding more light fixtures in areas including under cabinets and in stairwells. Multiple switches to reduce the number of trips and dimmer controls to eliminate glare are other options. First-Floor Bedrooms and Bathrooms: More than 40% of new homes have master suites downstairs, a 15% increase over a decade ago. Boomers not wishing to go up and down stairs with bad knees and aching backs have helped fuel this trend. Easy to Maintain Exteriors/ Landscaping: Yard work, painting, and other landscaping chores may no longer be enjoyable to aging home owners. People who move to a new home when they retire may opt for a maintenance-free community. Q. In the near future, my wife and I are going to build a house on some land that we have out in the country. We have been doing some research on what we want to build. I have seen lots of information on the green building and zero energy homes of today, but how effective are some of the odd elements of this type of construction? I have talked to a builder and it seems like he is not really doing anything different than when we built several years ago. Should I look for SQUARE more dramatic CORNERS differences in a new home today? Dean Jeff Deahl of DeKalb County. A. These trends are not new, and, yes, there are things that we do differently every year in making a home the best it can be. Some of these changes are subtle in an ongoing effort to make more energy efficient and also lessening our footprint for future generations. Building green is an effort to use products that are sustainable or recycled. There is also an effort to use products that are American made, decreasing shipping and transportation efforts. When striving for energy efficiency improvements going zero costs more money and requires design and additional effort beyond standard construction. Some relatively new techniques that most quality builders are incorporating today include insulated headers in exterior walls over doors and windows or in two story homes; actually moving the header load into the engineered floor above to allow full insulation where the headers used to be; and taller heels on the roof trusses so that full insulation in the attic can go all the way out to the exterior wall. Improved air sealing and insulation is always a good investment. High efficiency HVAC equipment and air quality techniques are also a no brainer.

Like many others, I lost friends on Sept. 11, 2001. As a museum professional and historian dedicated to the study of objects and their role in culture, I am pleased to highlight the new memorial and museum. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum debuted with ceremony and remembrance in May. Located on eight of the 16 acres of the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan, the memorial, designed by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, honors the 2,983 people who were killed in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Feb. 26, 1993. The memorial consists of two reflecting pools formed in the footprints of the original Twin Tower buildings. Designed by lead architects Davis Brody Bond of New York City, the museum is sited below ground and displays artifacts linked to the events of 9/11, while telling the stories of loss, compassion and recovery through displays, multimedia and interactive exhibits. Davis Brody Bond is the lead architect on the museum project sited below the Memorial plaza. Architect Steven Davis said, “The magnitude of the historic
importance of the site and its symbolism made it essential for us to find a balance between the collective and the individual experience.” The architectural firm was established in 1952 by Lewis Davis and Samuel Brody and became Davis Brody Bond in 1990. Today, it is one of the leading architecART & tural firms in ANTIQUES America. Over the years, Davis Brody Bond Dr. Lori has designed buildings for prestigious universities such as Cornell, Northwestern, Princeton and Columbia.
