15. Environmental and Political Problems 1. sekce Udělej si myšlenkovou mapu všech věcí, které tě napadají k tématu „Problémy dnešního světa“. Zajímáš se o politiku? O čem jsi v poslední době slyšel/a ve zprávách? Co můžeš udělat ty osobně, abys přispěl/a ke zlepšení životního prostředí? Přiřaď své nápady a myšlenky k těmto oblastem. Sledoval/a jsi průběh války v Iráku?
There are now few societies unaffected by the major environmental problems facing our planet today.
Global Warming One of the most serious problems is global warming. It’s caused by something known as the ‘greenhouse effect,’ because the planet is made to feel like a greenhouse by gases that gather above the surface of the earth, trapping heat near the surface. This warms the planet and damages the environment as a result. Even though many consider global warming a serious threat to the environment, there are some who doubt the severity of its effects. In 2001, for example, US president George W. Bush refused to ratify the Kyoto Treaty, a document which committed industrialised nations to reducing ‘greenhouse gases.’
The Ozone Layer Another serious problem is the destruction of the ozone layer. The ozone layer protects the planet from the sun’s ultra-violet rays, but it’s being damaged by CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), which have been used in the production of plastic foam, fast-food containers, fridges and home insulation. People have only recently discovered the harmful effects that CFCs can have.
home insulation: domovní izolace
