Halloween: Invitation to the Occult?

The celebration of the pagan festival of Halloween is now a multi-billion dollar merchandiser's market. Fifty percent of Americans will decorate for Halloween (compared to over 80% for Christmas). It is now the third most popular party activity, after the Superbowl and New Year's Eve.

This is always a difficult time for Christians, especially those with children. It is also a dangerous time for some, since many of the seemingly "harmless" involvements associated with Halloween can also be "entries" for the occult, and can prove very tragic for the unwary.

There is only one true God (Isa 44:6, 8: 46:9). Thus, only one true religion. Scripture declares "all gods of the nations are idols" (Ps 96:5). All false religion and idolatry is by definition involved in demon worship - whether or not the participants recognize it (Acts 26:18). Hence Paul's concern. The spiritual power and reality behind idols involves demons (I Cor 10:20, Ps 106:37). The Bible tells us to shun occultic practices. This series will help you understand the Pagan background to the modern Halloween traditions practiced today.

TDEAR FRIENDS

here are moments when it seems time freezes. During that instant, everything around us is preserved as a mental still shot that allows us to process the dramatic shift in our understanding of the events that have rocked our world. I clearly remember where I was as a twelve-year-old boy on November 22, 1963, when President John Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas. It seemed that I suddenly grew up in that moment to understand the terrible condition of the world.

I remember January 28, 1986, when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded after only 73 seconds of flight. I received the shocking news while I was working as a management consultant at Hughes Aircraft in Southern California. It all seemed unbelievable as the technology of space flight seemed to be safely predictable. Suddenly, I was reminded of the constant risk of thinking that we “have everything covered.” Perhaps all these sudden changes are there to remind us that the course of life is not predictable. As Chuck Missler used to often say, “Life is not linear.”

With the tragic event on September 10, 2025, I was once again horrified by the unexpected news of the assassination of Charlie Kirk. As the days passed, the ripple effect of that momentous event would shake the whole world. For some, it would become a wake-up call. For others, it would become a call to action. In either case, it will go down in history as the turning point for the silenced masses to finally stand up and speak up for Biblical truth.

In His Service,

ANOTHER GREAT AWAKENING?

As the shocking news of the assassination of Charlie Kirk was graphically revealed to the world, many were left stunned and speechless as they attempted to comprehend the impact of this horrible event. In the days following, social media portals were red hot with messages of sorrow and support for this fallen leader of Turning Point USA. The common thread seemed to be that this young man, 31 years old, had somehow touched the central nervous system in society that yearns for communion and compassion. By his own admission, his ultimate objective was simple. When asked, “If you could be associated with one thing, how would you want to be remembered?” Charlie answered, “I want to be remembered for courage for my faith.”

As the world would soon understand that the “faith” Charlie spoke about was a life-changing belief in Jesus Christ as the only source of salvation

Ron Matsen President, Koinonia House

for mankind. Because of this foundational understanding, he built all of his speeches and public debates on the simple truths that flow out of this Biblical worldview. Therefore, as the light of his message reached further and further into the dark realm of popular moral relativism, it is no wonder that with each new opportunity came more vehement opposition.

(Oct. 14, 1993 – Sept. 10, 2025)

Thus, with a single shot on September 10, 2025, his voice was silenced, but his message became amplified as the world gathered to contemplate, consolidate, and communicate Charlie’s core beliefs. With the global broadcast of the September 21, 2025, Memorial Service in Glendale, Arizona, came a resounding testimony that a “turning point” for the nations had been reached. Many who were among the 65,000-plus attendees say they witnessed a spiritual awakening that seemed to stir the hearts with a desire to “be like Charlie.”

The First Great Awakening

The First Great Awakening was a Protestant religious movement that took place in the American Colonies during the eighteenth century, from the 1730s through the 1760s. It followed on the heels and in part a response to the Age of Enlightenment, which was known for a time of scientific and philosophical advancement. This turbulent period was also a time of questioning the credibility and reliability of the Bible. This growing skepticism concerning the inspiration of the Bible radically reshaped European thought and moved the traditional moral precepts into uncharted waters. Thus, society found itself drifting on the everchanging tides of situational ethics and moral relativism.

The First Great Awakening is most well-known for creating an emphasis on spiritual devotion, individualism, and freedom that contributed to the ideals of the American Revolution. The movement was led by influential men like George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards. Edwards

Charles James Kirk

emphasized human sinfulness and divine judgment in his sermons, including “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” as he encouraged people to repent and ask God to save them.

The Second Great Awakening

The Second Great Awakening in North America rejected the skepticism that was the by-product of the Age of Enlightenment. Beginning in the early nineteen hundreds, evangelists like Charles G Finney began to stoke the flames of revival in Western New York. His fiery sermons moved many of his listeners to “repent and return” to authentic Christian values and doctrines. He inspired many others who copied his direct style, which saw dramatic results throughout the United States.

Although historians try to dissect the ebb and tide of religious cycles, I honestly think they miss the point that “Awakenings” happen naturally after a period when night is finishing.

The Jesus Movement

During the late 1960s, the youth in Western society grew tired of the post-World War II societal corruption and materialism that consumed

so many resources. These baby boomers would rebel in a countercultural movement that rejected the mores of mainstream values. The movement originated on college campuses in the United States, although it spread to other countries, including Canada and Britain. The name “hippie” was derived from the word “hip” which simply means to be modern and relevant. It was use to characterize young people searching for deeper meaning. This movement reached its pinnacle in 1969 when more than half a million hippies arrived at the Woodstock Festival in Upstate New York. By the early nineteen seventies, the “good feelings” and cultural optimism had begun to fade as the seeds of their “sex, drugs, and rock ‘ n ‘ roll” lifestyle were yielding the predictable fruit of discontentment and confusion. Therefore, many found themselves spiritually unfilled after seeking the empty promises of hedonism.

Many trace the beginning of the Jesus movement to 1969 and the “summer of love.” As tens of thousands of hippies descended on San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district, there was a specific effort to engage this lost generation and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Without centralized direction or organization, Christian young people began to lead these disillusioned Hippies into a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ by simply sharing the fundamental truth of the Bible.

Spencer Dryden, Marty Balin, and Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane performing at the Fantasy Fair, early June 1967. Haight-Ashbury, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

Out of this Holy-Spirit-orchestrated movement, thousands and thousands of former “dropouts” would become “plugged into” the foundational core of an evangelical awakening that is still seen today.

Another Great Awakening?

I have heard from numerous people who attended or heard the memorial service for Charlie Kirk report that they had never experienced anything like that before. During a live episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show,” Megyn said that Kirk was “sent by God to change minds and hearts on the most important, divisive, and difficult issues of our time. They both said that they witnessed the power and presence of the Holy Spirit as never before.

When you consider the events that led up to that fateful day, you can see the ingredients that preceded all previous great awakenings. The battleground on college campuses over the past decade had seen the rise of darkness and the decay of the moral foundation of society worldwide. Young people were being forced to accept directions that came from a broken moral compass. Gaslighting was being used as a form of psychological abuse where the academic elite caused students to question their sanity, memories, or perception of reality leaving them with no real foundation for their own conservative worldview. Navigating through the fog of gender confusion, speculation masquerading as science, the advocacy for violence toward those who have a competing ideology, and general verbal assault, left these bewildered students as helpless victims. All of this served to delegitimize any thoughts that contradicted the accepted narrative of the so-called progressives.

Against the demand for capitulation from the ruling minority, a streetlevel rebellion began to emerge. In 2023, at Asbury University, students spontaneously stayed in Hughes Auditorium following a regularly scheduled chapel service for a time of worship and prayer. News of the revival largely spread on social media, as the participants were mainly members of Generation Z (students in their 20s). It was reportedly attended by approximately 15,000 people each day.

Another point of interest is that the world watches in amazement as faith meets football. It wasn’t that long ago that the only kneeling you’d see at a sporting event was being carried out by those who were protesting during the American National Anthem. Now the focus has changed to watching both college and professional players meet on the playing field to spend time in prayer together. For the second year in a row, Ohio State University (OSU) football players shared the gospel during a campus event filled with praise music, prayer, and baptisms. On Monday evening, September 8, 2025, about 2,000 people attended “Fall Kickoff: An Invitation to Jesus,” listening to athletes’ testimonies and committing or recommitting to the Christian faith. Athletes behind a growing spiritual movement on the University of Pittsburgh campus say the “presence of God was tangible” during a recent first-of-its-kind evangelistic event on their campus.

In parallel to this outpouring, college campuses all over the United States were hosting open-forum debates to challenge the progressive status quo. Although now Turning Point USA is the ensign of this movement, many other Christian apologists have been battling on American campuses for decades. As the seeds of truth were relentlessly sown in the hearts of the listeners, I believe we are now beginning to see the fruit of open minds and open hearts being turned to Jesus Christ as the only answer to the primary questions concerning the meaning of life.

What’s Next?

During each of the previous “awakenings,” some traditional churches were left sitting as observers while the flow of revival swept by them, creating new avenues for outreach and discipleship. Therefore, the Church of Today needs to open its arms to the Church of Tomorrow by embracing and encouraging this new breed of energized young Christians

so that the foundational Biblical truths remain intact and their leaders take advantage of the experience from those who have gone before them in previous awakenings.

THE TESTING AND TURNING POINT OF A NATION

The Sins of Judah: From David’s Throne to Babylonian Exile and the Power of Repentance

The history of ancient Israel, particularly the southern kingdom of Judah, is a tragic tale of covenant, betrayal, and God’s divine mercy as recorded in numerous manuscripts of antiquities. Spanning from the reign of King David around 1000 BC to the fall of King Zedekiah in 586 BC, this period witnessed a cycle of faithfulness, moral decay, and prophetic warnings. The countless wicked sins that ultimately led to Judah’s captivity in Babylon were not isolated acts, but a persistent pattern of idolatry, injustice, and covenant-breaking that provoked God’s judgment. Yet, interwoven in this narrative is a theme of hope: when the people turned back to God through genuine repentance and reform, His judgment was often stayed or delayed, demonstrating His longsuffering and desire for restoration (Ezekiel 36:26).

The Golden Age and the Seeds of Sin: From David to Solomon

King David, described in the Bible as “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14), established the kingdom of Israel, rooted in devotion to Yahweh, the God of Israel. His reign was marked by military victories, the centralization of worship in Jerusalem, and the composition of psalms that exalted God’s law. However, David was not immune to sin; his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah (2 Samuel 11) continued a precedent for moral failings among Israel’s leaders. These personal sins, while forgiven after repentance, foreshadowed broader national issues.

David’s son Solomon inherited a prosperous kingdom and built the magnificent First Temple (960 BC) in Jerusalem as a symbol of God’s presence (1 Kings 6-8). Initially wise and faithful, Solomon’s later years introduced the seeds of Judah’s downfall. Influenced by his many foreign wives, he tolerated and even participated in idolatry, building high places for pagan gods like Ashtoreth, Chemosh, and Molech (1 Kings 11:4-8). This amalgamation of Yahweh worship with other gods violated the first commandment of the Mosaic Covenant: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). Solomon’s actions divided the kingdom after his death in 931 BC, splitting it into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. While Israel fell to Assyria in 722 BC due to similar sins, Judah’s story continued, plagued by recurring idolatry.

The Divided Kingdom: Idolatry and Injustice in Judah

Following the split, Judah’s kings ruled from Jerusalem, with the Davidic dynasty providing a thread of continuity. However, the Bible’s historical books (1-2 Kings and 1-2 Chronicles) portray a fluctuating commitment to God’s law. Many kings perpetuated or exacerbated the sins begun under Solomon:

• Rehoboam and Abijah (931-913 B.C): Rehoboam’s harsh rule led to the division, and he allowed high places and Asherah poles, symbols of Canaanite fertility cults, to proliferate (1 Kings 14:22-24). This idolatry included sacred prostitution, a direct affront to God’s holiness.

• Asa and Jehoshaphat (913-841 B.C): These kings initiated reforms, removing idols and seeking God, which temporarily stayed judgment (2 Chronicles 15:12-15). Asa’s removal of high places and Jehoshaphat’s promotion of Torah teaching illustrate how repentance could bring prosperity and peace.

• The Cycle of Wicked Kings: Subsequent rulers like Jehoram, Ahaziah, and Athaliah introduced Baal worship, influenced by alliances with the northern kingdom (2 Kings 8:18). Queen Athaliah’s usurpation and promotion of paganism nearly extinguished the Davidic line (2 Kings 11).

The core sins during this era were twofold: idolatry and injustice. Idolatry manifested in the worship of false gods, child sacrifices to Molech (2 Kings 16:3), and the desecration of the Temple. Sins of injustice included oppression of the poor, corrupt judges, and false prophets who endorsed immorality (Amos 2:6-8; Micah 3:1-3). Prophets like Isaiah and Micah warned that these violations of the covenant, given at Sinai, invited divine wrath, likening Judah to Sodom and Gomorrah (Isaiah 1:9-10).

The

Height of Apostasy: From

Hezekiah to Zedekiah

The late kingdom period saw dramatic swings between reform and relapse, culminating in exile.

• Hezekiah (715-686 BC): Facing Assyrian threats, Hezekiah purged idols, destroyed the bronze serpent from Moses’ time (which had become an idol), and centralized worship in Jerusalem (2 Kings 18:3-6). His repentance and trust in God led to miraculous deliverance from Sennacherib’s siege (2 Kings 19). This illustrates how turning to God could avert disaster; Isaiah prophesied that God would defend Jerusalem

“for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David” (2 Kings 19:34).

• Manasseh and Amon (686-640 BC): Manasseh reversed Hezekiah’s reforms, rebuilding high places, practicing sorcery, and shedding innocent blood (2 Kings 21:2-9). His 55-year reign is cited as a primary cause of Judah’s doom, as God declared through prophets that Jerusalem would be wiped clean like a dish (2 Kings 21:13). Amon continued this wickedness briefly.

• Josiah (640-609 BC): A bright spot of reform, Josiah rediscovered the Book of the Law, tore down idols, and celebrated Passover (2 Kings 22-23). His heartfelt repentance delayed judgment: God promised, “Because your heart was responsive... I will not bring disaster in your lifetime” (2 Kings 22:19-20). However, the reforms were superficial for many, and sin persisted.

Engraving by the German painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (March 26, 1794 - May 24, 1872)

• The Final Kings: Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah (609-586 BC): These rulers ignored prophetic warnings from Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Jehoiakim burned Jeremiah’s scroll (Jeremiah 36), symbolizing his rejection of God’s word. Zedekiah, the last king, vacillated between alliances with Egypt and Babylon while doing evil in the eyes of the LORD (2 Kings 24-25).

Jeremiah prophesied that by breaking the covenant, oppressing the vulnerable, and trusting in false security, Judah’s fate was sealed (Jeremiah 2:13; 7:5-7).

The accumulation of these sins provoked God’s divine judgment.

As foretold, the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem multiple times, concluding in 586 BC with the city’s destruction, the Temple’s burning, and the exile of Judah’s elite to Babylon (2 Kings 25:8-21). This captivity, lasting about 70 years, fulfilled prophecies like Jeremiah 25:11-12, serving as punishment for centuries of unrighteousness.

The Mercy in Judgment: How Repentance Stays God’s Hand

Throughout this history, the Bible emphasizes that God’s judgment is not capricious but a response to persistent sin, often after repeated warnings. Prophets like Hosea portrayed God’s relationship with Israel as a faithful husband to an unfaithful wife, longing for reconciliation (Hosea 2:14-23). Yet, divine patience has limits; as Ezekiel noted, the people’s sins had “filled the measure” (Ezekiel 9:9-10).

Deportation of the Jews to the Babylonian captivity. Wood engraving after a painting (1865) by Eduard Bendemann (1811 - 1889)

Crucially, repentance could, and did, stay God’s judgment. Examples include:

• Hezekiah’s Prayer: Facing terminal illness and national threat, his tears and humility extended his life and saved Jerusalem (Isaiah 38:1-5).

• Josiah’s Reforms: His actions postponed exile, showing that national revival could mitigate consequences.

• Broader Biblical Principle: Passages like 2 Chronicles 7:14 promise, “If my people... humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” This echoes in Jonah’s story, where Nineveh’s repentance averted destruction (Jonah 3).

Even in exile, hope persisted. Jeremiah encouraged the captives to seek God wholeheartedly, promising restoration (Jeremiah 29:10-14). The return under Cyrus in 538 BC validated this: turning back to God stays His judgment, offering renewal.

Lessons for Today

The chronicle from David to Zedekiah serves as a cautionary narrative in Scripture, illustrating how personal and national sins erode covenant blessings. Idolatry, whether ancient Baal or modern equivalents like materialism and self-seeking, invites divine discipline. Yet, the overarching message is one of grace: God is “slow to anger and abounding in love” (Exodus 34:6), eager to relent when hearts turn to Him. For contemporary readers, this history underscores the timeless call, reminding us that no sin is beyond forgiveness if met with genuine repentance and obedience. As the Psalmist declares, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth” (Psalm 145:18).

K-HOUSE STATEMENT OF FAITH

The Bible is the very Word of God, is inerrant in its original autographs, and is fully and totally and uniquely reliable as the primary guide to all actions and commitments; That Jesus Christ is God Incarnate, became man to fulfill a destiny on our behalf, was crucified, buried, and bodily resurrected, is presently seated on His Father’s Throne, and will soon return to establish His Kingdom on the Planet Earth.

That, in the meantime, the Holy Spirit is uniquely active in pursuing His mission in calling, equipping, and empowering believers, and is essential for any and all of the pursuits to be fruitful and effective.

KOINONIA…

…is a New Testament word which is most often translated to mean “communication,” “fellowship,” or “communion.” Koinonia House, or K-House as we are affectionately called, is dedicated to the development and distribution of materials for encouraging and facilitating serious study of the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization.
