“The Silver Veil” is a legend from Nordic mythology in which the heroine Guna possesses a silver veil that gives her the power to see everything “that has passed and that will happen in the future.”¹ I openly admit that this would be a practical invention—if it actually worked. After all, even Einstein believed: “I am more interested in the future than in the past, because that is where I intend to live.”
There is no shortage of oracles. We know the story of the Pythia as the Oracle of Delphi, just as we know the prophecies of Confucius—or, for those who prefer something more contemporary, the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, as well as Aristotle Onassis, who believed that one should not chase after the future but rather move toward it.
Equally pragmatic was the American futurist Herman Kahn when he said: “Anyone can learn from the past. Today it is important to learn from the future.” Or better still, President Abraham Lincoln with his proposal: “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” The building blocks for shaping the future can be identified today. They are, above all:
• Sustainability
• Capacity for innovation
• Simplicity in installation and operation
• A strong community
And this is what we pragmatically deliver with and through KNX:
• 8,000+ KNX-certified products for all solutions and all use cases, enabling the realization of countless new requirements, ideas, and projects.
• 142,000+ KNX-certified partners forming a close knit network and a strong community in 184 countries.
• 520+ national training centers in 74 countries, pro viding KNX knowledge worldwide.
• Simple, long-term, and sustainable installation, operation, and lifecycle of products and services.
These are the building blocks that make buildings efficient—and make business possible. And in doing so, they make investments efficient and profitable for all stakeholders involved.
“The future is not what happens to you, but what you make of it”.
That is KNX—and that is KNX—and KNX is more.
On the one hand, it is an ecosystem that makes a longterm positive contribution to and for the environment. On the other hand, it is a business case that evaluates profitability and the investments required, while considering strategic orientations and impacts, in order to create a WIN-WIN situation for everyone involved.
One thing is clear: vision needs tradition, and the future needs origins.
All of this is—and has been—KNX. And much more besides:
Namely, a community that for more than 35 years has proactively and interactively delivered solutions together, and will continue to be capable of offering new solutions in the future. KNX therefore provides far more solutions than practice can even pose questions for.
Thus, the mythical veil over the future is lifted, as well as over what can be done to shape it—true to the motto:
The future is not what happens to you, but what you make of it.
KNX. Creates. Future.

Heinz Lux CEO, KNX Association

KNX Association is working to bring even greater simplicity and innovation to its wider ecosystem and deliver long-term positive environmental impact. Discover the work and the initiatives that are underpinning this evolution.
Jean-Christophe is one of the leading KNX experts in the world, with 17 years extensive experience and expertise. He will bring to the President role his in-depth knowledge of Energy Management and System Solutions, and wide-ranging international project management and sales experience across multi-segments. High on Jean-Christophe’s list of priorities The concept of ‘Buildings 4.0’ is bringing the principles of automation, data exchange, and digital technologies into the built environment, working to create more efficient, intelligent, and user-friendly homes and buildings. In parallel, living and working more sustainably has become imperative. From grass-roots movements to national regulations and supranational UN Sustainable Development Goals, the world is working to achieve Net Zero.
Our houses, apartments, hotels, schools, hospitals, factories, and more are a key part of this puzzle. These two evolutions – Buildings 4.0 and sustainability – can work hand in hand. By embedding digital technologies and enabling automation, we can optimise the impact and user experiences of our buildings. And, importantly, environmentally-focused features need not hinder the functionality or user experience of our buildings.
Do smart devices equate to sustainable buildings?
Whilst a rich and diverse ecosystem of device makers and products is essential for innovation, achieving truly ‘smart’ homes and buildings is impossible if said devices cannot seamlessly and securely communicate, share data, and trigger actions. The smart home and building landscape is fragmented, and this can impact the user’s experience, functionality, energy management capabilities, and much more.
Extending this thought, sustainable smart buildings with proactive energy management are only possible when smart devices are fully integrated into a single intelligent system. Stand-alone devices from varying ecosystems may be able to share some high-level
data with one another, but it can only go so far. They will never be able to proactively monitor the building and intelligently take collective action.
This approach to intelligent smart buildings does not need to be complex – not when there is KNX.
KNX enables simpler, more sustainable smart homes and buildings.
A powerful community, creating future-proof technology
The KNX ecosystem has been the standard for smart homes and buildings for 35 years and is defining buildings of the future.
The KNX open standard has created a mature global ecosystem of devices, solutions, services, software, expert installers, and more. The resulting scalable and secure digital platform is electrifying and digitising homes and buildings to optimise and enrich the world around us.
Do smart devices equate to sustainable buildings?
The KNX ecosystem has evolved significantly in recent years, and KNX Association is committed to maintaining the quality and reliability that KNX installations are known for, whilst bringing even greater simplicity to the adoption, implementation, maintenance, and use of innovative KNX systems.
As Jean-Christophe Krieger, President of KNX Association, puts it, “The next decade will be defined by simplicity, and innovation – and KNX is already shaping this future. Together with our global community, we will continue to evolve our technology, lower barriers for newcomers, provide efficiency to our system integrators, and ensure that every KNX installation delivers long-term value for people and the planet. Our strength has always been collaboration and constant movement, and it is this collective spirit that will guide KNX into its next era of leadership.”
In our drive for simplicity, innovation, and sustainability, a wide range of activities is in progress:
• Lowering entry barriers for new audiences: it is important that as many people as possible can understand, adapt, and work with KNX technology. KNX is actively working to help new users get started and give every stakeholder a simple and smooth experience to help them achieve their objectives more easily.
• Improving accessibility to KNX technology: thinking about the technology itself, we are mak-
ing it easier to work with the specifications and access technical guidance, offering greater flexibility for commissioning workflows and boosting interoperability with third-party systems, manufacturers, and tools.
• Faster, simpler tooling: our community of professionals and system integrators is one of our greatest assets. New innovations are set to make project creation, configuration, and maintenance simpler, drastically cutting down the time and complexity involved.
• Harnessing the future: being at the forefront of innovation benefits our ecosystem, implementations, and end-users. We are therefore working on a range of initiatives, including aligning KNX Secure with the CRA (Cyber Resilience Act) and pushing forward with impactful AI initiatives, amongst others.
• Creating positive, long-term impact: sustainability is not just a technical outcome resulting from the right implementation of energy management; it is the positive impact that KNX and its community create every day. KNX smart home and building systems are being implemented today that respect our planet, serve end-users, and preserve our future.
On our journey to enabling simpler, more sustainable smart homes and buildings, our strength is our community. We will continue to champion collaboration in everything we do and welcome feedback and contributions from all stakeholders.

Jean-Christophe Krieger President, KNX Association

The European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is reshaping expectations around cybersecurity for connected products. For manufacturers of both hardware and software, it introduces clear requirements related to secure design, vulnerability handling, and long-term responsibility throughout a product’s lifecycle. In the context of connected buildings, where systems are increasingly IP-based and expected to operate securely for decades, these challenges are particularly relevant. For the KNX ecosystem as a whole, however, the direction set by the CRA is not a sudden change. It reflects a security journey that began many years ago, driven by technical requirements and shared responsibility rather than regulatory pressure.
Long before cybersecurity became a regulatory topic, the KNX community, including both KNX Association and its manufacturers, recognised that openness, interoperability, and long-term stability must be accompanied by robust security mechanisms. This common understanding led to the introduction of KNX Secure, initiated by KNX Association in close alignment with market needs and systematically extended across the KNX ecosystem.
Today, all KNX communication technologies offer security: KNX TP, KNX RF, KNXnet/IP, and KNX IoT, providing authentication, integrity, and confidentiality at protocol level. These mechanisms directly address key CRA principles, such as protection against unauthorised access and resilience against common cyber threats, while preserving full interoperability within the KNX system.
Building on this foundation, KNX Data Secure and KNX IP Secure play a central role in securing KNX installations, particularly in IP-based and hybrid environments. By enabling encrypted and authenticated
communication between devices and systems, they support manufacturers in addressing the increasing cybersecurity expectations placed on connected products.
These security features are not optional extensions but an integral part of the KNX standard. They reflect a consistent approach to security that aligns well with the objectives of the Cyber Resilience Act.
With KNX IoT, security has been considered from the very beginning. As an IPv6-based, IP-native extension of KNX, it incorporates modern security concepts directly into its architecture. This makes KNX IoT well suited for contemporary IoT environments, where cybersecurity is a fundamental requirement rather than a later addition.
KNX IoT also makes use of open-source components, bringing benefits in terms of transparency, innovation, and interoperability. At the same time, the CRA introduces specific considerations related to responsibility and lifecycle management in open-sourcebased solutions. These aspects are well understood, and they are taken into account as KNX IoT and its ecosystem continue to evolve.
The Cyber Resilience Act presents concrete challenges for manufacturers, and KNX Association is addressing them together with its members. By continuously equipping the KNX standard with appropriate security mechanisms and adapting it to an evolving technical and regulatory environment, the Association supports manufacturers in navigating these requirements. In this context, the CRA can be seen as a confirmation of an approach KNX has followed for many years. Security has long been a fundamental aspect of the KNX standard, and it will remain a key focus as connected buildings continue to evolve.

Energy management in homes and buildings is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Buildings are no longer passive consumers of energy, but increasingly act as prosumers, generating, storing, and flexibly consuming energy. This shift affects the entire value chain, from devices and building automation systems to energy management platforms and grid operators. As energy-related assets such as photovoltaic systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and advanced HVAC solutions become more tightly connected, the need for structured, interoperable, and scalable integration becomes critical across all levels. Recent developments within the KNX standard reflect this evolution, addressing these challenges at different levels.
New functional blocks for energy-related applications
Since the release of KNX specifications version 3.0.4, new Functional Blocks have been introduced to enhance interoperability in the energy management domain. These Functional Blocks provide a standardised approach for complex energy-related applications, enabling more consistent integration across manufacturers and systems.
Key application areas include photovoltaic systems, HVAC, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, where devices typically expose a high number of datapoints. By defining common Functional Blocks, KNX reduces ambiguity in interpretation and implementation, allowing systems to interact more predictably and efficiently. This represents an important step toward scalable and interoperable energy management solutions based on KNX.
Alignment with established energy standards
To further strengthen interoperability beyond the building domain, KNX Association is actively collaborating with established initiatives from the energy sector. A key example is the cooperation with the SunSpec Alliance, resulting in a new white paper that de -
scribes the mapping between SunSpec models and the KNX protocol. SunSpec models are widely adopted by major inverter manufacturers and are well known to grid operators. By mapping these models to KNX, this work establishes a clear bridge between building automation and energy systems, facilitating the integration of photovoltaic inverters and related energy assets. This alignment enhances the relevance of KNX in energy management scenarios where interaction with grid-oriented systems is increasingly important. In parallel, a mapping between SAREF4ENER and KNX, within the context of the Code of Conduct for Energy Smart Appliances (an initiative from the EU commission DG ENER), has been created. SAREF (Smart Applications REFerence ontology) is a standardized vocabulary designed by the European standardization committee ETSI to enable different IoT devices and applications do understand each other. SAREF4ENER is the SAREF part specifically dedicated to the energy domain. This activity, currently work in progress, aims to further align KNX with semantic models used in the energy domain, supporting interoperability at a higher, semantic level.
Vertical integration with energy management systems
Energy management devices and appliances are typically more complex than traditional building automation components. Integrating them exclusively through application-level datapoints can result in increased engineering effort and longer deployment times. On top, the communication is mostly between two devices, i.e. the Home Energy Management System and the energy management device (e.g. the inverter of one’s solar panels in one’s home). To address this, KNX introduces a form of vertical integration between devices and Energy Management Systems. This approach allows energy-related devices to expose their functionality in a structured and standardised manner toward an Energy Management System, significantly reducing integration complexity and enabling faster roll-outs. At the same time, this does not replace the well-established horizontal integration via ETS. ETS remains the central tool for commissioning and interoperable configuration across KNX devices.
Complementary work going forward
The combination of enhanced Functional Blocks, alignment with energy-sector standards, and selective vertical integration reflects a pragmatic evolution of KNX. It addresses the specific requirements of energy management while preserving the principles of openness, interoperability, and vendor independence that define the KNX ecosystem.

Schneider Electric continues its journey to make KNX lighting control smarter, stronger, and simpler.
By combining the SpaceLogic KNX DALI Gateway Broadcast Master with two DALI Gateway Broadcast Extensions, it’s now possible to control up to 12 DALI channels unlocking greater scalability for modern lighting projects.
Designed for effortless installation, the solution offers simple commissioning, tool‑free connection, and full KNX Secure certification. Advanced lighting capabilities including color control, tunable white (DT8), and integrated power and energy measurement bring even more value to every project.
And for those who want to push efficiency further, including the Switch Extension enables complete power‑off of all DALI drivers, helping reduce energy consumption to a new minimum. More power. More simplicity. More efficiency. Schneider Electric elevates what’s possible with KNX.

For 35 years, KNX has helped people create buildings that simply work — reliably, at scale, and for the long term. What began as a straightforward approach to lighting control has grown into an open standard trusted in everything from homes and offices to airports, hospitals, infrastructure and even the most unexpected environments. The projects featured here show KNX in action across a wide range of applications. Some are large, some are unusual, all are built on the same foundations: certified interoperability, proven reliability and the freedom to grow, adapt and innovate over time. Together, they illustrate how KNX has evolved — not by chasing trends, but by enabling smart, sustainable solutions that continue to perform, year after year.
The very first KNX installation
When you first start a movement, particularly in pre-social media times, it’s far more likely that you would focus on making it grow rather than documenting your first steps. So how lucky we are to have the memory of KNX Association’s former President, Franz Kammerl, to draw upon to confirm that the first ever KNX project was a lighting control system in the education centre of the Niederbayern-Oberpfalz Handwerkskammer in Schwandorf, Germany. Over 35 years old, first ever KNX installation is still in operation at the education centre of the Niederbayern-Oberpfalz Handwerkskammer in Schwandorf, Germany (image courtesy of Handwerkskammer Niederbayern-Oberpfalz).
According to Mr Kammerl, the late Günter G. Seip, author of the Electrical Installations Handbook, former Director of Siemens, and first President of the EIB Association, was personally involved in the project. It required cooperation between the German installer association ZVEI and Siemens, and was carried out before the technology was officially commercially
available. It used push buttons and binary outputs (6A DIN rail devices) for lighting control of training rooms, and according to the current head of PR and marketing for the Handwerkskammer, Heike Sigel, the majority of the original (then Instabus) components are still in operation, providing control of individual room, group, and central functions. What a fine example of the robustness and reliability of KNX!
One of the first commercial installations
One of the earliest larger-scale KNX installations was an office in Pasching, Austria, which was completed in 1994. It highlights two core strengths of KNX, namely reliability and backwards compatibility. It was equipped with KNX throughout, including the lighting which uses a 0-10V constant light control system. When systems integrator EBG took over management of the project in 2015, the original installer had long since gone out of business, so there was no up-to-date database nor any project documents. However, thanks to the ETS app Reconstruction Tool, EBG was able to read out the entire project and expand it. In 2020, the company integrated automated shading, and now the entire system, which includes 363 KNX devices, can be controlled and monitored by the doorperson.

Another strength of KNX is its flexibility in controlling of a broad range of functions through a huge choice of products. Demonstrating this can be a challenge, but CA Brachtendorf GmbH & Co KG stepped up to the plate with its Smartcube stand in 2005 – the first booth at the IFA fair to showcase home automation. The stand comprised a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and inside and outside entrance areas, with KNX integrating lighting, security, motorised windows, a weather station and an awning. The entire scene was visualised on a home server, and could be controlled via the living room television. This project won the 2006 KNX Award for Publicity.

In 2010, the German electrical association, ZVEH, took on the mantle of providing the most impressive smart home demo, the E-Haus, which is now a mainstay of the biennial Light + Building show in Frankfurt. The E-Haus is full of KNX technology, mixed and matched from numerous vendors, for automating comfort, safety, security, assisted living and energy management and optimisation. It uses AI, voice control, sensors, live weather data and more to control lighting, security cameras, white goods and kitchen devices, PV energy generation and storage, e-charging and heat pumps, monitoring of electricity, water, gas and air quality, human-centric lighting, and various technologies for assisted and accessible living.
KNX has always been used to save energy in buildings, but it reached new heights in 2013 with a ground-breaking project, ‘Finca los Miticos’, a rustic home situated in a remote area of Mallorca, Spain, where there is no grid power. Systems integrator, Smart Building Design GmbH, was tasked with finding a self-sufficient solution that controlled power from wind and solar, backed by an emergency power generator, as well as solving the issue of water supply, heating and sanitation. The telephone and Internet connection were provided via directional radio, and the television via satellite. The installed KNX system controls lighting, shading, heating, ventilation, and even the household appliances, which are adjusted to the available energy source using load shedding, but also the water level in the cistern and the oil level in the oil tank, which serves as backup for the so-
lar thermal system and the 1000-litre storage tank. KNX also manages an alarm system and the monitoring of all technical building services – even the electrical fence surrounding the property. No wonder this project won both the KNX Special Award and the People’s Choice Award in 2014.

Given that 30-40% of global final energy is consumed by buildings, anything that can mitigate this has to be an essential part of the design. London’s City Hall was originally called The Crystal – a Sustainable Cities initiative by Siemens, built at the Royal Docks of the River Thames. It used passive and active design features to save energy, including a high-performance façade system, natural daylight and ventilation, green landscaping, solar panels, e-charging, ground source heat pumps, a solar thermal array, heat recovery, LED lighting, low-voltage switchgear and comprehensive KNX automation. The building was the first to achieve the highest sustainable building accolades from the world’s two leading accreditation bodies, LEED and BREEAM.
According to Abtec Building Technologies who installed the system, KNX was seen as the ideal choice as it allowed multiple disciplines to be easily linked, reducing the installation costs and ensuring interoperability. KNX also ensured the building was future proofed, because its flexibility ensures changes can easily be applied as the building develops and adopts new technologies.
As KNX proved itself over the years, ambitions became bolder and installations grew in scope and size. The Heathrow Terminal 5 project in London was competed by Andromeda Telematics in 2008. The project aimed to provide a robust, scalable lighting solution across the terminal, leveraging KNX/DALI technology integrated with scheduling and PIR presence detection to optimise energy usage and operational efficiency. The automated lighting control significantly reduced energy consumption whilst maintaining safety and comfort for both passengers and staff. Since then, a growing number of airports have taken advantage of KNX, including Daxing International Airport in Beijing, China. Here, up to 35,000 KNX devices have been used to manage all lighting, air-conditioning, blinds and scenes in different areas. At the time
this was said to be one of the largest commercial KNX projects in the Chinese market, and indeed in the world.

KNX in factories
In 2014, The Garden Factory was opened in Neemrana, Rajasthan, India. Comprising two buildings spread across 80 acres, the aim was to merge innovation with nature. This was India’s first Platinum-rated green factory. It used vegetation inside and out to enhance ambient temperatures, air quality, and the visual environment; rainwater harvesting and 100% water recycling; and diagonal orientation of the entire structure to follow the path of the sun, thus maximising the efficiency of its 1.5MW solar PV modules. Systems integrator, Entelechy Systems used KNX to provide energy-efficient automated lighting with a centralised monitoring and control system, and visualisation that has proven to be very helpful in critical preventative and corrective maintenance. Operating statuses are easy to check, and faults can be remedied quickly. Thanks to KNX technology, the system is also easy to modify. In addition to flexibility, this project demonstrates how several sites, using KNX technology, can be incorporated into a single, centralised energy management system, in line with the ‘sustainable city’ concept.

The first KNX camper van, the ‘ProLiner Classic 760 S MEB’, was created as a prototype in 2007 by systems integrator Günther Sumser in Germany. Between then and the project winning the KNX Publicity Award in 2010, the vehicle is said to have covered 22,000km on European roads without a single device failure. It is full of useful features and can sense where people are and what they are doing, setting lighting or entertainment scenes accordingly, with blinds being lowered if the sun is shining. There are also automatic anti-burglary scenes, with alarm messages sent to the owner’s mobile phone.

Since then, KNX has been installed in various types of vehicle, including a truck in Australia by enthusiast Dag Rogge, which was converted into a smart home that could withstand temperatures up to 40C. Also in Australia is a broadcast truck that was fitted out by Systems Intelligence to automate HVAC load shedding and sequencing, phase control, surge protection, fire alarms and metering.
KNX has been fitted into numerous vessels, be they land or sea. An early example was the Pegaso Superyacht project that was carried out in 2011 by KNX Consultants. This features KNX-controlled blinds and curtains, HVAC, door and lockdown security, and integration with highend A/V, IT and communications systems.

From the following examples of winners of the 2024 KNX awards, we can see that the direction of travel for KNX is to reach in to every sector, intelligently automating a broad range of large-scale functions, whilst providing custom comfort and control for the individual. The Imperial Lexis Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is a fine example of this. Not only does the KNX system installed by Seikou Systec help to reduce energy consumption through intelligent resource utilisation and automated room settings, including lighting HVAC and access based on real-time occupancy data, it also allows personalised control of comfort and entertainment via voice or mobile apps.

Looking back over 35 years of KNX projects, one thing stands out above all: the expertise and commitment of the professionals behind them. From the earliest installations to today’s complex, large-scale and unconventional projects, installers, planners and integrators have continually pushed KNX into new environments, solved real-world challenges and turned a common standard into thousands of unique solutions.

The Aldi Logistics Platform Control project by IKNX Ingeníeria is spread across three logistic sites in Spain, and enjoys comprehensive automation. The details are too much to go into here, but it includes monitoring and control of industrial plant, water and electricity resources, including self-generation, alarm systems, lighting and thermal comfort, air quality and more. Whilst there is centralised control from Aldi’s headquarters in Barcelona, which unifies the three independent centres, each centre has its own control in case of a failure at any one site, and each office can be controlled by its occupant for comfort. The KNX system communicates with BACnet, Modbus, DALI and other protocols, and uses KNX IP Secure and KNX Data Secure products to guarantee security of the project.

Since its launch in 2021, ETS6 has continued to evolve to support you in planning, commissioning, and maintaining KNX installations. With each new version, the focus has been on reducing complexity, improving performance, and helping you stay in control, even in large or demanding projects.
ETS6.4 follows this approach with a set of improvements that may seem small individually, but together make daily work more efficient and more comfortable. The emphasis of this new version is on simplifying recurring tasks, improving clarity within projects and strengthening the foundation for future KNX installations.
One of the most noticeable time savings in ETS6.4 comes from improved linking workflows. With the new multi-linking capability, you can link multiple group addresses to multiple communication objects in a single step. Instead of repeating the same action over and over, you simply select several group addresses, hold the Alt key, and complete the linking in one operation. This is especially helpful in larger projects or when working with repeated configurations, where even small improvements quickly add up. The result is a smoother workflow that saves time while keeping full control over the project structure.

Compatibility mode: performance when you need it
ETS6.4 introduces a clearer handling of native and compatibility modes. By default, ETS starts in native 64-bit mode, giving you full performance and access to all available system memory. This makes working with large projects faster and more responsive. When you open a project that contains older plug-ins, ETS6.4 automatically restarts once in compatibility mode to ensure everything works as expected. After closing the project, ETS returns to native mode on the next start. If your daily work still relies heavily on older plug-ins, you can also choose to always start ETS in compatibility mode. Expect an impact on performance, as this forces ETS to 32-bit operation. This approach gives you the best possible performance without losing compatibility with existing projects.
Download via serial number, now automatic
The introduction of download via serial number in earlier ETS6 versions already removed the need to physically access devices to press programming buttons. ETS6.4 goes one step further by allowing you to set this behaviour as the default.
Once enabled, ETS automatically uses download via serial number whenever the serial number of a device is known. This further simplifies commissioning, especially when devices are already installed or difficult to reach.

Automatic backups for peace of mind
Keeping project backups up to date has always been important, and with KNX Secure, it has become even more critical to have access to the latest project version. ETS6.4 introduces an automatic backup option that takes care of this for you.
After you define an archive location and create the first backup, ETS automatically creates a new archive version every time you close the project. This reduces the risk of missing backups and supports smoother collaboration, especially when working with linked folders or shared archive environments.
Better modelling for multi-dwelling units
ETS6.4 improves the way you model multi-dwelling units. Building parts can now be placed within floors, allowing apartments to span multiple levels. This makes it easier for you to reflect real building structures in your projects, such as multi-storey apart-
ments within a single building. While this may appear to be a small change, it brings more clarity and consistency when working on residential and mixed-use buildings.
Native firmware updates directly in ETS
With ETS6.4, the foundation is in place for performing firmware updates directly within ETS. Until now, firmware updates typically required manufacturer-specific ETS apps. In ETS6.4, firmware updates can be handled natively, without additional apps, as long as the devices support this new mechanism. This improvement supports long-term maintenance and aligns with current security and regulatory requirements. As more manufacturers make their devices compatible to this new standardized approach, this new native feature will grow in value over time.
Clearer project overview and navigation
Several usability improvements in ETS6.4 help you keep a better overview of your projects. You can see projects sorted by modified date not only on the dashboard, but also in project drill-down views, both locally and in the archive. This makes it easier for you to quickly return to the project you worked on most recently. Group address views have also been extended with new columns showing the associated room and function. This gives you immediate context when working with group addresses and helps you connect logical building functions with traditional group address structures.

A version focused on everyday work
ETS6.4 does not aim to redefine ETS. Instead, it focuses on making everyday work a little simpler and more efficient. By refining workflows, improving clarity, and reducing manual effort, this new version supports you in delivering reliable KNX installations with confidence. As part of the ongoing development of ETS6, version 6.4 shows how practical improvements, driven by real project experience, continue to strengthen ETS as the central tool for KNX project engineering.
If you already have an ETS6 license, updating to ETS6.4 is free of charge. If you are working with an older ETS version or do not yet have an ETS license, ETS6.4 gives you access to all the latest improvements by ordering your ETS6 license via https://my.knx.org

Each room presents a practical challenge inspired by real KNX applications. To unlock the next door, you analyse the situation, identify the problem, and correct the configuration using ETS6 and KNX Virtual. You work in a realistic digital environment that mirrors everyday KNX project scenarios, without the need for physical devices. Using ETS6, the standard software for KNX configuration, together with KNX Virtual, which simulates a complete KNX installation, you solve typical automation tasks such as correcting lighting behaviour, adjusting HVAC logic, or restoring security functions. This hands-on approach allows you to test solutions freely, learn from mistakes, and gradually build confidence in your troubleshooting skills. Key application areas include photovoltaic systems, HVAC, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, where devices typically expose a high number of datapoints. By defining common Functional Blocks, KNX
reduces ambiguity in interpretation and implementation, allowing systems to interact more predictably and efficiently. This represents an important step toward scalable and interoperable energy management solutions based on KNX.
