KAM 2023 Legislative Dinner

KNOXVILLE ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

The KAM held its Annual Legislative Dinner in November this year which was well attended by both area legislators and KAM/Region 7 members. This year was extra special as it was the first time in many years that KAM once again had meeting space to host the event in-house in the new KAM Conference Center. Each legislator in attendance was afforded the opportunity to speak to our membership about what they viewed as important legislation for the upcoming session. Additionally, members presented to our legislators issues of importance in the medical profession and with patient advocacy. With the grand opening of the KAPA Kitchen just days away, KAPA staff was on hand to conduct tours of the new pantry and answer questions about how physicians in our area were caring for our neighbors in need.

ACADEMY NEWS FOUNDATION PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The philanthropic arm of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine (KAM), the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Foundation (KAMF) develops community initiatives to improve the overall health of our community, which spreads throughout East Tennessee. KAMF and KAM leaders convene regularly to ensure these projects are effective in achieving this mission. This past year, we’ve had many successes worth sharing. First, Knoxville Area Project Access (KAPA) continues to thrive. KAPA is a broad-based community charity which facilitates access to care for low-income, uninsured individuals in the community. Since 2006, KAPA has coordinated over 1 million encounters, more than $400 million dollars in donated services to more than 34,000 members of our community. What an accomplishment! This work could not be done without our network of over 2,900 physicians and providers, and all our area hospitals. I won’t be the first, nor the last, to say, “Thank you!” KAPA’s continued success paves the way for additional projects to develop. Two initiatives, KAPA Connects and KAPA Kitchen, are capitalizing on this momentum. KAPA Connects addresses social service barriers to accessing health care. Such barriers include anything from housing, to transportation, to drug and alcohol dependency. The program also supports health literacy in our community through medical education activities. KAMF’s latest project, KAPA Kitchen, tackles the growing challenge of food insecurity and its impact on well-being. With help from the American Heart Association and Second Harvest Food Bank, this emergency food pantry allows patients to obtain immediate food and/or hygiene products while coordinating access to care and other full-service food pantry partners. Heart and diabetic healthy options are available as well as diet education resources. Another new project this year is the Tennessee Community Resource Network (TCRN). A culmination of the efforts described above, so to speak, TCRN is a partnership between KAMF/KAPA and the East Tennessee Health Information Network (ETHIN). It brings KAMF/KAPA successes to a state-wide platform to connect

community-based organizations, traditional health care providers, and behavioral health providers across the state to enhance the health and well-being of all Tennesseans. Case management services, navigation services, donated care, and support services addressing social determinants of health come together on this platform to promote community health. Through coordinated data and information sharing, the network addresses gaps in needed services on the individual, whole-person level. Earlier this year, I was fortunate to sit down with the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Health, Dr. Ralph Alvarado, and the Medical Director of KAPA/TCRN, Dr. Jack Lacey, to promote KAMF, KAPA, and TCRN and to assess how best KAMF and KAPA’s successes can be coordinated and expanded across the state. On the fundraising side, KAPA’s largest yearly fundraiser, the KAPA Boot Scootin’ Ball, was a major success. We traded in our boots for flip flops and moonshine for margaritas for a night of fun, fellowship, and fundraising with The Caribbean Chillers, a Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band. The silent auction was a major hit, and the theme of the night inspired many to donate. Thank you to all our sponsors and contributors as this event sets the budget for many KAMF projects, ensuring all initiatives have adequate funding and opportunity to achieve our mission. One major upcoming event to highlight is the VIPs at Sea. In addition to serving the underserved, the KAMF mission of supporting community health also means ensuring the well-being of physicians who care for us. In 2023, this event included 8-night cruise aboard the Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas and featured some of today’s most prominent speakers on physician well-being! CME sessions allow for ample leisure time and a fun-filled week in the Caribbean. To quote Owen Arthur, the Caribbean statesman from Barbados, “For he who has health has hope; and he who has hope, has everything.” Thank you for reading and thank you for your commitment to helping others. – Patrick D. McFarland, MD, MBA

TENNESSEE COMMUNITY RESOURCE NETWORK Who is TCRN? A partnership between the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Foundation/Knoxville Area Project Access and the East Tennessee Health Information Network (etHIN). What is TCRN? A state-wide platform to connect community based organizations, traditional healthcare, behavioral health, and other health impacting providers in order to equitably enhance the health and well-being of all Tennesseans.

CLIENT DASHBOARD Client dashboard allows all care team members to see current needs, what needs have been addressed, and who is currently working with the client. Dashboard displays needs in traditional medical, behavioral health, and social services sectors in compliance with applicable state and federal laws.

Current integrations with etHIN include: Master Person Index (MPI) and Admission, Discharge, Transfer (ADT). The MPI includes over 2 million unique individuals for which demographic information can be pulled into the TCRN database eliminating data entry. The ADT integration allows for better continuity of care across sectors.

INTEGRATIONS WITH ETHIN

RESOURCE DIRECTORY The resource directory provides one tool to house all community resources whether they are medical, behavioral, or social. Multiple referrals can be sent at once eliminating duplicate data entry. The closed loop referrals allow for status updates as they become available.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU? CMS has released new Z codes which specifically address social determinants of health (SDoH). Hospitals and providers will be required to complete SDoH screenings and refer patients to resources as a standard for both CMS and Joint Commission. The development of G codes by CMS allows for reimbursement for SDoH screening and coordination of care. TCRN has developed a revenue sharing model in which providers can send TCRN a list of patients needing assessments and SDoH referrals and TCRN will coordinate appropriate care and report back to the provider for reimbursement.

For more information about TCRN or the revenue sharing model contact

ACADEMY NEWS KAPA Medical Encounters Exceed the 1 Million Mark! Did you know that the KAMF’s Knoxville Area Project Access program, also known as KAPA, is one of the largest project access programs in the nation? Since its inception in 2006, over $400 million dollars in donated care has been coordinated with more than one million medical encounters achieved thanks to the physicians of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine and all our local area hospitals. This year has been a year of growth for KAPA as we have now expanded to service patients from 23 counties. With this expansion, KAPA has also had to expand our volunteer physician base in those additional counties to ensure we have adequate clinics in all areas, as not to overload our volunteer providers in Knoxville. Currently, almost 3,000 physicians and physician extenders volunteer to see KAPA patients without charge. To facilitate this new growth for KAPA, several new employees have been added to the KAPA staff and team of volunteers. Since the Affordable Care Act was instituted, KAPA has not only coordinated donated healthcare for those patients without any other access to healthcare, but we have assured that those individuals who qualify for a subsidy in the Federal Marketplace be enrolled in an insurance plan. We have done this by maintaining a staff of Navigators who are all Federally Certified ACA Counselors. The KAM Foundation leadership believes that service is important as it ensures that our physicians can receive compensation if a possible payer exists for these patients. As part of our expansion, KAPA has also been busy developing new partnerships with local social service and church organizations. Our newest partners include: Second Harvest Food Bank, The American Heart Association, KARM, Boys and Girls Clubs of East TN, Knoxville Urban

14 | KNOXVILLE MED CINE

League, Faith Promise Church, and Living Hope Community Church. Partnering with local churches and social services has been valuable as we continue to coordinate not only medical services but also the social determinates of health such as transportation, housing, food, job assistance, etc. The social determinates of health can often be a major factor in overall patient healthcare outcomes. Because of effect of food insecurities among the underserved, the KAM Foundation founded and launched the KAPA Kitchen on November 15, 2023. In just the first two weeks, over 500 individuals have received food assistance, including more than 100 holiday turkey meals at Thanksgiving. The pantry is our largest project this year that was developed to serve our KAPA patients with items to meet their needs including healthy choices for food and personal hygiene products. In just a little over 2 months the office space once filled with cubicles has now been transformed into a complete pantry. This could not have happened without the help and support of all our partners and business supporters. Because of the generosity of our community, our partners, and the support of volunteers who believe in the vision as much as we do, no patient will ever leave our office hungry. Whereas, 2023 has been a year of growth for KAPA, with the support of the local physician community, we believe the best is yet to come! If you haven’t had an opportunity to tour the KAPA Kitchen yet or if you would like more info on all the KAPA Happenings, please call or email Rob Patrick, our KAPA Executive Director at 865-531-2766, Ext. 2500 or rpatrick@knoxvillemedicine.org.

KAM KNOXVILLE ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

Grand Opening November 2023 The Knoxville Academy of Medicine Foundation recently opened KAPA Kitchen, a food pantry that operates on-site to provide immediate food assistance for clients experiencing food insecurity. Our foundation supports low-income, medically underserved residents who have limited access to food, transportation, employment, housing, childcare, nutritious food, and internet THE services. The connection between food insecurity and chronic illness has been extensively researched and documented. KAPA Lack of access to fresh, nutritious food increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and disabilities resulting from these illnesses. Moreover, the rate of food insecurity is higher among minority populations. Through KAPA, we have made significant progress in removing structural barriers to health, particularly for racial and ethnic minority groups. However, there is still much work to be

done. A 2021 national health study found that family food insecurity rates were significantly higher among non-Hispanic other and multiple races (12.7%) and non-Hispanic Black (12.2%) individuals compared to non-Hispanic White (4.1%) and nonHispanic Asian (3.7%) adults. We believe that by addressing food insecurity, we can improve population health for all demographics. Lower food security is associated with a higher probability of chronic diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, diabetes, and kidney disease. Income is not as strongly associated with chronic diseases as food insecurity. If you would like to contribute or volunteer to help out in the development of the KAPA Kitchen, contact Rob Patrick, KAPA Executive Director at rpatrick@knoxvillemedicine.org or call (865) 531-2766 Ext. 2500.

KAM LAUNCHES VIPs at SEA in 2023 The KAMF launched their first VIPs at Sea cruise in February 2023 with physicians and their significant others from across the state participating. Onboard the Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, World Class speakers, Wayne Sotile, PhD and Mukta Panda, MD brought engaging thought-provoking information and participants enjoyed earning CME learning concepts through engaging participation programming that even included bumper cars! Dr. Edward Capparelli, 2022-2023 TMA President, also shared information on physician well-being. Dr Capparelli, ran on the platform of physician wellness and has been diligent in addressing the issues impacting our medical providers. While this was not the typical classroom CME, and the schedule pro-

It was not altogether surprising as to why the program was nominated for a national award from AAMSE (American Association of Medical Society Executive)! We are now partnering with medical societies across the country so they may offer the program to their physicians! ACADEMY NEWS New Benefit Programing Launched in 2023 With the continued rising number of area physicians experiencing burnout and fleeing from the profession coupled with the AMA forecasted physician shortage that is said to impact us in 2025, the KAM has continued to find ways to expand services and provide additional resources to our medical professionals. KAM Cares about well-being education. Our new VIPs at Sea program launched this year and focuses on well-being education for physician and their significant other. In 2023 the KAMF launched our first VIPs at Sea cruise that was offered to physicians across the entire state of Tennessee. Attendees were awarded up to 23 hours of CME provided from revered wellness speakers Wayne Sotile, PhD, Mukta Panda, MD and Edward Capparelli, MD. The event featured some impactful CME opportunity that was both engaging and educational for both the physician and their significant other. The program was nominated for a national award and has since been shared with medical societies across the country. KAM Cares about making physicians lives easier and more enjoyable. Recognizing the need for physicians to have a resource for relaxation and business travel, the KAM has launched our VIP Physician Concierge Travel Service. We are now connected to Travel Leaders International and Nexion Travel Service, which are among the leading travel companies in the nation. As a member benefit physicians and their staff now have access to hotel, air, cruise, and car rental at special cost savings rates. KAM Cares for our physicians! KAM’s physician hotline has been active for many years, however, studies have shown that hotline utilization across the country is significantly low for the population. Over the course of the last few years, the KAM has sought to provide a better resource for

our members and studied best practices of how to improve well-being programs and increase utilization. Our findings point to a model that includes a trusted relationship with a counselor that understands how to help navigate through tough times and is non-reportable. We launched our enhanced program in 2023 with our first KAM Care Coach Rob Patrick. Prior to joining us, Rob was on staff at a large multi-site church where he served as the Groups, Missions, Guest Services and Next Steps Pastor for over 12 years. While on staff there, Rob also launched the Stephen Ministry which is a National Organization for grief coaching. He has developed and organized a large coaching structure model to provide care and support for many leaders and coaches. Rob has a long history of working in and leading large organizations in the marketplace prior to his pastoral role. Within all the roles he has had over 35+ years, he has had many opportunities to serve as a mentor, coach, pastoral counselor, and people developer. Some of the areas of counseling experience he excels in include: grief, marriage, relationship, and conflict resolution. He is excited to bring his Care Coach experience to help care for our amazing Doctors who give so much to others in our community. Our care coach program focuses on meeting our members in their need and supplying them with an avenue to find assistance and hope to help restore their joy in practicing medicine. Rob, will be at all our KAM events to build relationships with our members and their families. We would encourage you to get to know Rob as you will find him to be most helpful and a great resource. If you would like to speak with Rob Patrick, he can be reached at (865) 531-2766 ext 2500. KAM Cares!
