THE BIG VICTORY

owgli sits on the back of Rama, the great herd-bull. He takes the cattle to the grazing ground at the edge of the plain where the Waingunga comes out of the jungle. The buffaloes usually like pools and muddy places, where they lie in the warm mud for hours. Mowgli drops from Rama´s neck and he sees Gray Brother waiting for him.
“Ah,” says Gray Brother, “I am here waiting for you. What is the meaning of this cattle-herding work?”

VELKÉ VÍTĚZSTVÍ
M
auglí sedí na zádech Rámy, obrovského plemenného býka. Žene dobytek na pastvinu k okraji planiny, kde vytéká Vaingunga z džungle. Buvoli mají obvykle rádi jezírka a bahnitá místa, kde mohou v teplém bahně hodiny ležet.

“It is an order,” says Mowgli. “I am a village herder for a while. Is there any news of Shere Khan?” “He is looking for you and wants to kill you.” “Ok,” says Mowgli. “We need to keep an eye on him.” Then he picks out a shady place, lays down and sleeps while the buffaloes graze around him. Herding in India is one of the laziest things in the world. The cattle move and lie down and move on again. The buffaloes settle down into the muddy pools one after another, and work their way into the mud until only their noses and blue eyes show above the surface. Then they lie like logs and enjoy it. Children play, sing songs, weave little baskets of dried grass and put grasshoppers in them, make necklaces of red and black jungle nuts, watch lizards on a rock and make mud castles with mud figures of men. Then evening comes and the children call out, and drive the cattle across the grey plain back to the twinkling village lights. Day after day Mowgli leads the buffaloes out to their wallows and day after day he sees Gray Brother. “I met Tabaqui in the dawn and now I know Shere Khan´s plans. He will wait for you at the village gate this evening.” “Is his stomach full or does he hunt empty?” says Mowgli, because the answer means life and death to him. “He killed at dawn. A pig. Shere Khan could never fast, even for the sake of revenge.”

„Je to příkaz,“ odpoví Mauglí. „Jsem na nějakou dobu vesnickým pasáčkem. Máš nějaké zprávy o Šér Chánovi?“ „Hledá tě a chce tě zabít.“ „Dobře,“ řekne Mauglí. Pak přijde večer a děti volají a ženou dobytek přes šedou planinu zpět k mihotajícím světlům vesnice. Prase. Šér Chán by nikdy nehladověl ani kvůli pomstě.“

“Oh! Fool! He is full and he thinks I will wait till he gets his sleep! Tell me, where does he lie up? Ten of us could kill him when he lies.” “He swam far down the Waingunga,” says Gray Brother. Mowgli stands with his finger in his mouth thinking. “The big ravine of the Waingunga. It opens out on the plain not far from here. I can take the herd around to the entrance to the ravine through the jungle and then along it, but he could sneak out the other side. We must block that end. These buffaloes will not charge unless they catch his scent, and I can not speak their language. Gray Brother, can you cut the herd in two for me?” “Perhaps. But we will need help,” says Gray Brother. Then Mowgli sees a huge grey head he knows so well. “Akela! Akela!” says Mowgli, clapping his hands. “I am so glad to see you, my old friend! We have a big job ahead of us. Cut the herd in two, Akela. Keep the cows and calves together, and the bulls and the buffaloes apart.” The two wolves run in and out of the herd and separate it into two parts. Not even six men could divide the heard so neatly. “What now?” asks Akela. “They are trying to join again.” Mowgli jumps on to Rama´s back. “Drive the bulls away to the left, Akela. Gray Brother, hold the cows together, and drive them into the foot of the ravine. “ “How far?” asks Gray Brother.

„Ach! Mauglí stojí s prstem v puse a přemýšlí. Nechej krávy a telata pohromadě a býky a buvoly postav zvlášť.“ Dva vlci vběhnou do stáda a rozdělí jej na dvě části. Ani šest mužů by nedokázalo rozdělit stádo tak hezky.
