With the Interreg SI-AT project GreenTour, partners from Austria and Slovenia are setting a strong example of sustainable tourism and cross-border cooperation in the heart of the Karawanken mountains.
Under the leadership of the EGTC Geopark KarawankenKaravanke, committed partners – including the Klopeiner See –Südkärnten – Lavanttal Tourism Region (KSL), RRA Koroška, the Institute for Nature Conservation of Slovenia, the Podzemlje Pece Tourist Mine and Museum, and the Tourism Board Eisenkappel-Vellach – combine their expertise to make nature and culture tangible across borders.
At the core of the project are three focus areas: the sustainable maintenance of nature-based infrastructure, the creation of new visitor and interpretation centers within the Geo.Hub network, and innovative visitor flow management strategies
in sensitive natural areas. Together, these elements form the foundation for a respectful and forward-looking tourism development in the region.
INTERREG SI - AT project GreenTour is far more than an EU project – it is a cross-border journey into the heart of nature, driven by shared visions, regional identity, and a commitment to sustainability.
This printed edition invites you to discover both partner regions – Klopeiner See – Südkärnten – Lavanttal and Koroška, explore their key themes, and experience the shared green future of the Karawanken.
Be inspired – by a region where nature, culture, and collaboration know no boundaries.

Carinthia
We’ll admit it—the “½” of our 7 ½ Southern Carinthian lakes is actually the Völkermarkt Reservoir, which in truth is a river, the Drava (Drau). Thanks to its open landscape, excellent water quality, and incredible biodiversity, it’s a true playground for birdwatchers, anglers, hikers, rowers, paddlers, and cyclists alike.
EUROPE’S BEST ROWING WATERS
Rowing elites from around the globe travel to Southern Carinthia to train here, where the reservoir offers world-class conditions. From Olympic champions to weekend athletes, the Drava is prized as both a training ground and competition venue. Families also love it. Canoeing on the reservoir is a highlight, especially as part of the scenic Drava Paddle Trail (Drauradweg).
Anglers will find 54 kilometers of diverse fishing grounds along the reservoir. The upper stretches are shallow and rich in wetlands, while the old riverbed grows steadily deeper. It is an ideal habitat for trout, pike-perch, catfish, and bream.

After all, a castle was never meant to be easy to conquer!
The Karawanken mountains in Southern Carinthia also feature unique geological formations for climbing. It’s no coincidence that UNESCO awarded this landscape the title of Global Geopark. Especially the cross-border areas around the Koschuta and Bad Eisenkappel are true climbing paradises.
GUIDED TOURS AND INTRO COURSES
Certified guides offer tours through climbing routes, hikes, and sport climbing courses. They’re not just pros when it comes to safety—they also share fascinating stories about the geology and landscapes. Celebrate
as the seasons call for it.
In Southern Carinthia, there‘s no such thing as a season without tradition or festivity–and we wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, Brauchtum (custom) lives up to its name: it’s something we both want and need.
At the start of the year, little chapels are carried through the villages, sweet braided loaves are tossed, and hearty sour soup is cooked up to warm the soul. During carnival season, costumed fools chase winter away with bursts of color and cheeky humor.
After cleansing and fasting comes the feasting–and Southern Carinthia’s Easter celebrations are a culinary highlight. From decorative palm bouquets and Easter bonfires to the beloved Easter snack platter with crispy Reindling and homemade meats, tradition is always on the table.
Summer is filled with festivals celebrating art, culture, and regional flavors. Come winter, the region transforms into a haven of magical Advent custom–Perchten parades chase away evil spirits, Christmas trees are lowered into lakes, and the cycle of the year begins anew.

A SPECTACULAR FUSION OF ART, ARCHITECTURE, AND LANDSCAPE
Even without considering the surrounding beauty of Southern Carinthia, Museum Liaunig is worth a visit for its architecture alone.
This striking modern structure—made of sleek, minimalist cubes in steel, glass, and exposed concrete—is Austria’s youngest building to be granted protected heritage status.
Inside, things are just as impressive. One of the largest collections of Austrian art since 1945 awaits, displayed in bright, light-filled galleries. Opened in 2008, the museum also features a sculpture park and its own concert series, Sonusiade. In 2011, it was honored with the Austrian Museum Award.
Werner Berg (1904–1981) had a rare gift for capturing the everyday life around him with powerful simplicity and emotional depth. In recognition of his extraordinary work, the town of Bleiburg dedicated a monographic museum to him in 1968. Located right on the main square, the museum continues to draw attention each year with its engaging special exhibitions.
Over time, the historic building has been expanded with a dramatic skylight hall, a sculpture garden, and a creative workshop. The result is a space where art and architecture seem to interact in their own unique rhythm. Large-scale murals on the museum’s exterior carry the exhibition out into the streets of downtown Bleiburg, seamlessly blending culture with the cityscape.

The old and new Lippitzbach Bridge
In the village of Lippitzbach, echoes of industrial grandeur remain.
Once home to one of the largest and most advanced sheet metal rolling mills in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the site now quietly commemorates its past through the ruins of the old factory, a nearby castle, and the iconic Lippitzbach Bridge.
This historic bridge partially protected as a heritage site is deeply rooted in the hearts of the local community. In fact, when plans surfaced to tear it down, locals rallied in a successful grassroots campaign to save it. Although currently closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, its presence continues to symbolize Ruden‘s proud past.

Hemmaberg, an ancient place of power and mystical sanctuary
AN ANCIENT SANCTUARY OF POWER, NATURE’S ENERGY, A MYSTICAL SPRING, AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURES
Hemmaberg (842 meters) rises from the foothills of the Karawanken Mountains in the Jauntal Valley near the town of Globasnitz. Formed during the Tertiary period some 12 to 14 million years ago, this mountain takes its name from Saint Hemma of Gurk and ranks among Europe’s oldest pilgrimage destinations.
Experts believe the site was first settled over 3,500 years ago in the Neolithic era. Later, the Celts built a permanent settlement called Juenna, named after their deity Jouenat, the namesake of the Jauntal Valley. Excavations have revealed the remains of five churches, as well as associated hospice and residential structures dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. To this day, Hemmaberg continues to yield priceless insights into Europe‘s deep past. Hemmaberg
At the Archaeological Pilgrimage Museum located at the foot of the mountain, you can admire extraordinary finds, including a Bronze Age burial site, a Greek drinking vessel belonging to a prince from around 500 BC, a votive altar to the god Jouenat, and much more. Never has ancient history felt so close.
MYSTERIOUS ROSALIENGROTTE
A miraculous healing spring, a hidden chapel, and Saint Rosalia—the protector against the plague. Tucked into the northern face of Hemmaberg, just below the summit, lies the mystical Rosaliengrotte–a natural cave sanctuary that invites stillness and inner reflection, wrapped in legends and folklore. Within the grotto stands the Rosalien Chapel, where a statue of Saint Rosalia was installed in 1669, commissioned by the superior of Eberndorf Abbey in Maribor. This sacred site is also home to a legendary spring that once supplied water to late Roman settlements. Locals say its healing powers rival those of Lourdes. Visitors are welcome to collect the spring water–a gesture many embrace with heartfelt gratitude.

A Cross-Border Journey into the Heart of Nature
Nestled between the peaks of the Karawanken mountains lies one of Europe’s most inspiring examples of cross-border collaboration: the Karawanken-Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark. From 2023 to 2026, key partners from the Geopark and its surrounding areas in Austria and Slovenia are joining forces to shape the future of sustainable tourism in this shared natural and cultural landscape through the INTERREG SI-AT project GreenTour.
Under the leadership of the EGTC Geopark Karawanken-Karavanke, the managing authority of the UNESCO Global Geopark, the initiative unites strong regional partners, including: KSL Tourism Marketing GmbH (Klopeiner See – Südkärnten –Lavanttal Tourism Region), RRA Koroška (Regional Development Agency for Koroška), the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation, Podzemlje Pece Tourist Mine and Museum, and the Tourism Board Eisenkappel-Vellach
Klopeiner See Südkärnten Lavanttal
Together, these partners share a common goal – to protect and preserve the Geopark’s unique natural treasures while enhancing authentic and responsible travel experiences for visitors seeking meaningful encounters with nature.
Three Pillars of Green Innovation
The GreenTour project is built on three key pillars that shape its activities:
1. Green Care System – a smart, crossborder network dedicated to maintaining and monitoring nature-based infrastructure, ensuring that hiking, biking, and alpine trails remain safe, accessible, and sustainable.
2. Geo.Hub Network – a series of newly developed and revitalized interpretation and visitor centers across the region, where nature meets knowledge, offering visitors insights into geology, biodiversity, and responsible outdoor practices.
3. Visitor Flow Management – innovative, data-driven tools designed to protect sensitive natural zones while offering guests high-quality experiences in suitable areas.
Together, these initiatives not only preserve the fragile mountain ecosystems but also empower local communities, strengthen tourism businesses, and foster cultural exchange across the border.
A Shared Future for Sustainable Tourism
With a total budget of € 1.78 million co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), GreenTour lays the groundwork for a resilient and sustainable future of the joint Karawanken-Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark.
The project brings together municipalities, tourism experts, conservationists, and educators in a true spirit of cross-border collaboration — demonstrating that sustainability transcends boundaries.
As visitors explore the lakes, valleys, and peaks of Southern Carinthia in Austria and Koroška in Slovenia, they become part of this shared story — one of unity, respect, and deep connection with nature.

Radlje ob Dravi has been known as a settlement since Roman times and was first mentioned as a clustered village in 1161 and later as a market town in 1268. This town by the Drava is renowned for its hospitality, sustainability, and not least, its excellent beer and local apple juice.
Since large amounts of hops are grown in the surrounding area, the location of the brewery nearby is not only practical but also logical. Let your taste buds explore the diverse flavours of craft beers, while the youngest visitors can enjoy delicious locally produced apple juice.

Slovenj Jradec
CITY OF PEACE,
AND NATURE
Slovenj Gradec is a cultural hub of the Mislinja Valley and the oldest town in Koroška, as it was granted town rights as early as 1267. Its pleasant location, sheltered between Uršlja Gora and Pohorje, offers visitors well-maintained hiking and cycling trails. The surrounding area, dotted with excellent farm stays, also offers thematic and mountain trails leading to diverse and differently demanding peaks.
After a guided tour of the town center, enjoy a aromatic cup of Wolf coffee
The air is scented with the smell of honey as sweets and honey bread have been produced locally by the Perger family since 1757. Their museum offers a glimpse into the colourful past and wide assortment of unique products.
The town is known for its artists, cultural and social events, as well as the new swimming complex Aqualatio. The Koroška Regional Museum, which is present throughout Koroška and holds many historic secrets of the region, and the Hugo Wolf Museum are especially worth visiting. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška (KGLU) focuses on visual art from the mid- 20th century onward and plays an active social role by addressing often overlooked issues. As a museum of national importance and part of an international network, KGLU preserves mobile cultural heritage while emphasizing educational programs that foster learning and critical thinking. Its vibrant cultural activity has earned the town a strong international reputation, so much so that in 1989 the United Nations awarded it the honorary title Peace Messenger City.
In the town, you will find several boutique accommodations tailored to individual guests. Bicycles can also be rented at various locations for independent exploration. In addition to numerous awards for tidiness, Slovenj Gradec has also received the Slovenia Green Destination – Bronze certificate.
In the wider surroundings of the town, you can discover interesting sacral sites. Through glass floors, St. George reveals a glimpse into the past, while the Church of St. Pankracij above the old square offers an insight into the life of nobles in the Middle Ages. Together with the church on Homec Hill, they form a mythical triangle said to hold secret powers.
Each summer, Slovenj Gradec’s town centre comes alive with film and music. Visitors can enjoy short films from around the world under the stars at Rotenturn Castle, with live music before and after the screenings. A few days earlier, the Zebra Festival delights young audiences with a colourful mix of animated films.
Step back into the Middle Ages, when lords ruled and steel was forged! During the Medieval Prelude (Srednjeveški preludij), the centre of Slovenj Gradec comes alive with music, food, and crafts. Watch blacksmiths at work, explore knights’ weapons and curious torture devices, enjoy the bird show and jester’s tricks, and treat yourself to sweet delights from Perger 1757 confectionery.

Vuzenica
Vuzenica, the seat of the municipality, is a central settlement idyllically situated on the right bank of the Drava. It is distinguished by its reputation as one of the oldest places in the Drava Valley. In the past, rafters floated “flose” here, while carriers busily transported goods along the Drava. Numerous fairs also added to the town’s lively atmosphere.
The remnants of the old castle and the parish church of St. Nicholas still testify to its former glory. The church was once home to Anton Martin Slomšek, a gentle poet and national awakener. Autumn walks in the nearby Dravče, St. Primož on Pohorje, St. Vid, and Šentjanž above Dravče are especially delightful.
The landscape, offering countless opportunities for recreation in unspoilt nature, forest fruits, and homemade delicacies, is interwoven with numerous hiking trails. In Vuzenica you can rent an e-bike and ride it around the nearby and distant surroundings.
NATURE. HISTORY. YOUR STORY.
The large sports park provides exceptional training opportunities. It is also possible to spend the night in the town centre.
Vuzenica is also well worth exploring by bike or on foot, as the experience of nature becomes even greater. The many ascents are always rewarded with magnificent views. Embrace the thrill of outdoor adventures – from mountain landscapes and alpine sports to water activities, Koroška is a true playground for active holidays and outdoor enthusiasts.
