President’s Message Summer Vibrations: Reflecting on Our Progress Together Summer is my favorite season, offering a valuable opportunity to pause, recharge, and reconnect with loved ones. It is also an ideal time to evaluate the goals we established at the start of the year and make any necessary adjustments. During our recent mid-year retreat, the MPI Carolinas Chapter board did exactly that. Seth Macchi LEMG President
Our progress is guided by a comprehensive business plan developed each fall to ensure the chapter continues moving in a positive direction. At the mid-year retreat, we reviewed this plan to assess our performance. I am proud to report that we are on track for a fantastic year! Our board remains dedicated to providing a high-value experience for our members through excellent educational programs, engaging networking events, and supportive environments for professional and personal growth. On another note, I recently attended the WEC event in San Antonio, where I met with numerous event professionals, planners, and chapter leaders. Hearing about the innovative work being done by chapters worldwide was truly inspiring and provided a wonderful opportunity to benchmark our own chapter's progress against global standards. As you enjoy your summer, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your year so far and determine if you are meeting your personal and professional objectives. Should you need any support, please do not hesitate to contact the MPI Carolinas Chapter board. We are committed to your success because when you succeed, our entire chapter wins. Have a wonderful summer!

Our Members New Member Spotlight Jackie Tattersall NC Courage
Where do you currently work and how long have you been there? I currently work for the NC Courage, North Carolina’s professional women’s soccer team, and have been with the organization for about a month. Tell me about your position and the organization you are with.
Why did you join MPI Carolinas Chapter? I joined MPI Carolinas to connect with fellow industry professionals, build meaningful relationships, and discover local suppliers to partner with as I continue getting established in the area.
As the Sr. Events Manager for the NC Courage, I oversee the planning and execution of a diverse range of events across multiple departments, including partnerships, community engagement, and ticketing. This role plays a critical part in bringing the club’s brand to life through impactful experiences that strengthen relationships with fans, partners, and key stakeholders.
What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry?
What are your hobbies?
What is your ideal vacation/vacation spot?
My hobbies include hiking, getting outdoors, and exploring the local food scene, I’m excited to discover everything the Carolinas have to offer!
My ideal vacation spot is anywhere by the ocean, preferably right on the beach. There’s nothing better than soaking up some vitamin D and relaxing to the smell of salt air.
My advice for anyone interested in pursuing a career in this industry is to volunteer and gain as much hands-on experience as possible across the different segments of our field. I’d also encourage you to never be afraid to ask questions—no matter how big or small.

Alone in the car with the stereo blaring, I sing every word of each track. For the drive home, I'm 15 years old again and the music is the most important thing in my life. Favorite Vacation Spot? Anywhere I can try new, local food specialties. Some standouts: grilled Caribbean lobster on the beachfront in Saint Martin, Okonomiyaki fresh from the griddle in Hiroshima, and five spiced seasoned fried chicken cutlet, xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and milk tea in Taipei's night markets.
What's your favorite part of being a member of MPI Carolinas Chapter? Attending amazing events I didn’t have to plan (special shout out to the Board and Director of Meeting Planning)! It’s the perfect mix of making new friends, catching up with familiar faces, and always learning something new along the way. Carolina Blitz | Summer 2026 | 7

Building Connections & Confidence:
New Member Mix & Mingle + Membership 101 The MPI Carolinas Chapter recently revamped our New Member Lunch & Learn, and added a new member and first-time attendee mix and mingle to all future onsite events. These events were designed with one goal in mind: to ensure every member feels welcomed, informed, and empowered to make the most of their MPI journey.
New Member Mix & Mingle: Where Connections Begin The Mix & Mingle at the spring chapter meeting created the perfect setting for new members to meet chapter leaders, committee representatives, and fellow industry professionals in a relaxed and welcoming environment. From corporate planners to suppliers and everything in between, the room was filled with diverse experience and shared enthusiasm for the meetings and events industry. Attendees had the opportunity to: • Learn about upcoming programs and networking opportunities • Discover ways to get involved through committees and volunteer roles • Ask questions in an open, supportive setting
Membership 101: A Fresh Take on a Familiar Favorite Many of our longtime members may remember this session as the New Member Lunch & Learn — a program traditionally designed to welcome those who had just joined the MPI Carolinas Chapter.
This year, we’ve refreshed and reimagined the experience. Now branded as Membership 101, the program has been thoughtfully revamped to serve not only our newest members, but also those who have been part of Meeting Professionals International for months — or even years — and could benefit from a refresher. Let’s be honest: platforms evolve, leadership teams change, benefits expand, and it’s easy to forget exactly where to find certain resources or how to maximize everything your membership offers. Membership 101 was redesigned to bridge that gap. The updated session provides: • A guided walkthrough of where to find key chapter and global MPI resources • A reintroduction to the current board and committee leaders • Clear direction on who to contact for specific needs • Updates on member benefits, tools, and engagement opportunities • Practical tips for getting more involved — at any stage of membership By expanding the focus beyond brand-new members, we create space for reconnection and renewed engagement. Whether you joined last month or several years ago, Membership 101 ensures you feel confident navigating your MPI benefits and connected to the leadership team supporting you. Membership isn’t just about joining — it’s about fully engaging.

Hidden costs also begin to disappear. With ample onsite parking, complimentary Wi-Fi in both guest rooms and meeting spaces, and a wide range of dining and entertainment options already located on property, many groups eliminate the need for outside transportation or additional venue rentals. Flexibility Where It Matters Most Audio-visual production is another area where costs can quickly add up. Kalahari takes a flexible approach by offering fully equipped meeting rooms with modern technology while still allowing planners to bring in their own AV vendors or equipment if preferred. This gives organizations the freedom to design the production setup that best fits their needs and budget. A New Destination for the Carolinas Meeting Community
One Roof, Endless Possibilities: Why All-Inclusive Event Venues are the Cost-Effective Solution for Planners By: Kalahari Resorts & Conventions When are you opening in Spotsylvania County, Virginia? Some of the biggest event planning expenses aren’t obvious at first: transportation logistics, venue fees, coordinating multiple vendors, the list goes on. Increasingly, teams are discovering that choosing a destination designed to host everything in one place can simplify planning and even reduce overall event costs. That’s where Kalahari Resorts & Conventions stands apart. Across its five destinations, Kalahari has built a reputation for pairing expansive convention space with a fully integrated resort experience. For planners, that means lodging, meeting venues, catering, entertainment, and attendee experiences all come together in one thoughtfully designed property. The result is an event environment where logistics become easier to manage and budgets stretch further. Savings That Go Beyond the Meeting Room One of the most significant advantages of hosting events at an all-under-one-roof destination is the ability to bundle key elements of the program. At Kalahari, planners often find that group guest room blocks and food and beverage commitments can help offset or reduce meeting space rental costs. When major components of an event are consolidated under a single agreement, planners gain more flexibility in how their budgets are allocated.
For MPI Carolinas planners looking ahead to future programs, an exciting new option is on the horizon. Kalahari Resorts & Conventions is bringing its signature allunder-one-roof experience to Spotsylvania, Virginia, with a new property set to open in late 2026. Located just off the I-95 corridor between Washington D.C. and Richmond, Spotsylvania offers easy drive access for attendees across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, including Northern Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, and beyond. For many groups, that means eliminating the need for air travel – reducing both costs and complexity. The destination will introduce expansive convention space paired with the same integrated resort environment Kalahari is known for nationwide, including on-site dining, entertainment, and its signature indoor waterpark - all included with overnight stays. Interest is already building quickly, with teams across the region securing dates well in advance. For planners, it’s an opportunity to host large-scale meetings in a destination that combines accessibility with a built-in attendee experience. Beyond the business agenda, Kalahari’s resort environment creates natural opportunities for networking and connection, all with a single, cohesive setting. The result is fewer moving parts for planners, and more memorable, engaging experiences for attendees. As organizations continue looking for ways to maximize both budgets and attendee experiences, destinations like Kalahari Resorts & Conventions are proving that sometimes the smartest way to plan big is to keep everything under one roof.

MPI CAROLINAS
Spring Chapter Meeting Recap Greensboro Was Full of Big Ideas, Real Conversations, and Practical Takeaways If you missed the MPI Carolinas Spring Chapter Meeting in April at the Sheraton Greensboro Hotel at Four Seasons, you missed much more than educational sessions — you missed meaningful conversations, fresh perspectives, and the kind of networking energy that reminds us why this industry thrives on human connection. From communication strategies and public speaking tips to networking psychology and music licensing insights, attendees walked away with practical tools they could immediately apply to their meetings, teams, and careers.
“Small Talk Is Actually a Big Thing” — Bill Ganon Bill Ganon kicked off the event with an engaging and interactive networking session that immediately energized the room. Attendees paired up with people they didn’t know, creating instant connections and proving his point that networking works best when we focus on genuine human interaction. One of the biggest takeaways? People remember verbs, not titles. Instead of predictable introductions, Bill encouraged attendees to create memorable openings that spark curiosity and conversation. He also reminded us: “If you want to be interesting, you have to be interested.” From asking stronger follow-up questions to learning how to gracefully exit conversations while keeping the door open for future connection, attendees walked away with practical networking strategies they could immediately use at our chapter meetings and beyond.
Managing Remote Work Without Burnout — Marcey Rader Marcey Rader’s session on leading remote teams struck a chord with attendees navigating nonstop notifications, overlapping communication channels, and what she described as “urgency addiction.” 16 | Carolina Blitz | Summer 2026
When she asked, “How many of you feel like Siri or Alexa for your teams?” the laughter that erupted throughout the room said everything. Her session focused on creating guardrails for healthier, clearer, and more effective communication. One of the strongest reminders from the session was: Reactive is not the same as responsive. Marcey challenged attendees to rethink how teams communicate and collaborate, especially in remote environments where overcommunication can quickly lead to burnout. She encouraged attendees to implement practical strategies like doing one task for yourself before opening email, creating a “sundown checklist” to better close out the workday, and using communication matrices to reduce redundancy across multiple channels. Her session served as a powerful reminder that sustainable performance starts with healthier communication habits because, ultimately: Health powers performance.
Public Speaking Tips Every Meeting Professional Needed Lauren Ansley’s session on public speaking delivered actionable advice that resonated whether attendees regularly take the stage or support speakers behind the scenes. The interactive workshop focused on helping meeting professionals communicate with confidence, structure messages clearly without memorizing scripts, and create stronger audience engagement through intentional delivery. One takeaway that especially resonated with attendees was the reminder not to just stand behind your exhibit table, Lauren encouraged us to focus on engaging the people walking by. She reinforced that connection and presence matter just as much as content.
Lauren’s session also highlighted the value of collaborative learning. The recap discussion at the end allowed attendees to build on each other’s insights and capture ideas they may have otherwise missed. Another practical tip many attendees appreciated was scheduling dedicated time after conferences to revisit presentation screenshots, notes, and new connections while everything is still fresh. Reinforcing what you learned and who you met helps transform new conference connections into meaningful, longterm relationships that can create lasting impact.
Music Licensing: The Session Nobody Realized They Needed Michael Farrell’s session on music licensing turned out to be one of the most eye-opening conversations of the conference. Many attendees admitted they had never fully considered the legal and ethical responsibilities surrounding music at meetings and events. Michael reminded us of a common misconception in the industry that music is free. In reality, the cost to obtain a music license is often minimal compared to the incredible value music brings to the overall experience.
The offsite bowling activity sponsored by Visit Greensboro added another level of connection and fun to the experience. It gave attendees the opportunity to relax, laugh, and build relationships in a more casual environment — proving once again that some of the strongest industry connections are built outside the meeting room. The Spring Chapter Meeting demonstrated exactly why MPI Carolinas Chapter events continue to stand out: meaningful education paired with authentic connection and memorable shared experiences. We’re looking ahead to our next opportunity to gather at the Summer 2026 Chapter Meeting on August 27–28, at The Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem. This meeting is being intentionally designed as a unique experience that only the premier luxury boutique atmosphere of The Graylyn Estate can offer — blending education, connection, and elevated hospitality in a truly unforgettable setting. If Greensboro was any indication of what’s ahead, this is one meeting you will not want to miss.
Candice Batts, CMP Medical Leverage Education Committee Chair
He explained that anytime music is performed, played, broadcast, or otherwise communicated publicly at an event, licensing requirements may apply. Attendees gained valuable insight into the organizations responsible for managing performance rights, including SESAC, ASCAP, and BMI. Perhaps the biggest surprise for many in the room was learning that the ultimate responsibility falls on the end user — not the AV company or the meeting planner. The session sparked important conversations around compliance, risk management, and the behind-the-scenes responsibilities that many planners may unknowingly overlook. It was a powerful reminder that even the smallest event details can carry significant legal and financial implications.
Beyond the Sessions: The Real Magic Was the Connection While the education sessions delivered tremendous value, some of the best moments happened in between. Networking breaks and post-session conversations created opportunities for attendees to exchange ideas, strengthen relationships, and continue discussions sparked during the sessions.

A Keynote That Challenges and Inspires Event strategist and keynote speaker Andrew Roby, will deliver an unforgettable session on The Experience Gap: Why Great Meetings Still Create Frustrated Attendees.
Honoring Legacy and Expanding Perspective Adding depth and historical perspective, Calvin Stovall presents a powerful session: Hidden Hospitality: The Black Legacy of Hotel, Motel, and Resort Ownership.
This keynote will expand on the gap between planners and hospitality professionals, and how their measurements of success differ, often leading to frustration on both ends. Planners and hospitality professionals will be challenged to rethink one of the industry’s most dangerous assumptions: that operational alignment automatically creates experiential alignment.
Based on his NAACP Image Award-nominated book, Stovall highlights the untold stories of Black entrepreneurs who built and operated hotels, motels, and resorts from the pioneer days through the Civil Rights era. Attendees will gain insight into the immense challenges these leaders faced, and the resilience and innovation that fueled their success.
This keynote will challenge attendees to look beyond logistics and examine the invisible points where guest trust is either built or broken.
Elevating Experiences Through Wellness Ashley Brooke Jones will also lead an interactive session: The Wellness Effect: Elevating Meetings Through Mind-Body Integration. As attendee expectations evolve, wellness has become a strategic tool for enhancing engagement, connection, and retention. Ashley will share how planners can intentionally incorporate wellness into meetings, conferences, and retreats—regardless of budget or scale.
Don’t Miss This Signature Summer Event The Summer MPI Carolinas Chapter Meeting is more than a gathering—it’s an opportunity to recharge your creativity, expand your network, and gain fresh perspectives from industry-leading voices.

Shaping the Future of Meetings A Recap of GMID 2026
On May 6, 2026, the Carolinas hospitality, meetings and event professional community gathered at the Embassy Suites Charlotte/Concord Golf Resort and Spa to celebrate Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID). This year’s event proved exactly why face-to-face meetings remain irreplaceable, delivering an afternoon packed with data-driven insights, leadership conversations, and high-energy networking. From the seamless arrival experience to the networking reception, the energy was palpable. As Malinda Harrell with Visit Raleigh succinctly put it: "Loved every minute of it!" Here is a look back at the moments, insights, and takeaways that defined GMID 2026.
By the Numbers: North Carolina’s Travel Outlook Following a warm welcome and lunch, sponsored by Visit Charlotte, attendees settled in for a crucial pulse-check on the local industry. Marlise Taylor, Research Director at Visit NC, took the stage for her presentation, State of the State: The Outlook for Travel and Meetings in North Carolina. Taylor delivered a comprehensive forecast that painted a bright picture for the region. Her insights highlighted North Carolina's resilient tourism economy and provided event professionals with the essential metrics needed to navigate shifting client demands, budget trends, and hospitality growth over the coming year.
The Power Panel: Courage, Heart, and Belonging The afternoon’s most talked-about session, Powering What’s Next: AI, Wellness, DEI, and Community Impact in Meetings, brought together a powerhouse lineup of industry leaders: • TK Knight (VP, Sales & Executive Director, Visit Charlotte) • Lisa Luks (Managing Director, HelmsBriscoe) • Melissa Klingberg (CAE Account Executive, THM) • Gissell Moronta (SVP, Sales & Marketing, Atrium Hospitality) – Moderator
"Loved every minute of it!" 20 | Carolina Blitz | Summer 2026

While the conversation deftly navigated the technological disruptions of AI and the evolving necessity of wellness in events, it was the raw, transparent discussion around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) that left a lasting impression on the room. Reflecting on the session, moderator Gissell Moronta described the panel as "brave," noting how the speakers leaned into a topic that has often been heavily politicized. "These brilliant women approached it with both courage and heart," Moronta shared. "The most powerful takeaway was this: DEI is not just a corporate initiative or political conversation. It is personal. It is about YOU making people feel like they belong, creating access for others, and showing kindness, inclusion, and grace. Don’t wait for a company to create or cancel an initiative. You can make a difference in how you treat the people around you. In short: be kind."
Leadership with a Spark of Excitement Closing out the educational tracks was John Edwards, the aptly titled Chief Excitement Officer of The Edwards Group. His session, Leadership for Tomorrow: Inspiring Teams in a Changing Hospitality Landscape, was an injection of pure energy. Edwards challenged leaders to rethink how they motivate workforce talent in an industry undergoing rapid cultural and technological transformation. He emphasized adaptability, empathy, and the importance of maintaining an infectious enthusiasm to drive team retention and event excellence.
Connection and Celebration The day concluded with a vibrant Networking Reception. Surrounded by peers and partners, attendees traded business cards, digested the day's heavy-hitting topics, and celebrated the collective resilience of the meetings industry. GMID 2026 successfully reinforced a vital truth: when the meetings industry connects, the economic and human impact ripples far beyond the ballroom. Another GMID success thanks to the brilliant efforts of the MPI Carolinas Chapter, speakers, meeting partners and fellows, and annual sponsors. Giving Back Together Strengthening Our Communities Through CSR One of the most meaningful ways our chapter demonstrates leadership is through our commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and community engagement. By strengthening partnerships with local nonprofits throughout the Carolinas, we create opportunities for members to make a lasting impact while fostering stronger connections within our communities. As part of our ongoing initiative to integrate CSR into chapter meetings and events, we have incorporated community-focused activities that allow members to give back while networking and learning together. These efforts not only support worthy causes but also reinforce the important role the events industry plays in building stronger, more resilient communities.
Spring 2026 Community Giveback Project Food and Supplies Drive Benefiting Greensboro Urban Ministries Food Pantry – Greensboro At our Spring Chapter Meeting, members came together to collect an impressive 217 pounds of food and essential supplies for the Greensboro Urban Ministries Food Pantry. The pantry provides emergency groceries to community members who are struggling to access the nutritious and adequate food necessary to maintain a healthy diet. Through the generosity of our chapter members, these donations will help

address food insecurity and support individuals and families throughout the Greensboro community.
Looking Ahead These successful projects demonstrate the power of collective action and the positive impact our chapter can have when we unite around a common purpose. As we continue to strengthen community partnerships across the Carolinas, we look forward to expanding our CSR efforts through future chapter events, volunteer opportunities, environmental initiatives, and donation drives. At our upcoming Summer Chapter Meeting, we will be hosting a Back-to-School Drive. We are asking attendees to pack a little extra in their bags by bringing back-to-school related items for students and/or teachers. Thank you to all our members who contribute their time, resources, and generosity. Together, we are creating meaningful change and exemplifying the spirit of service that defines our association.
