What I have continued to learn over the last few months is the importance of relationships. More than ever during these times, planners need suppliers and suppliers need planners to be successful. We must work together as a team to be creative and come up with ideas and strategies to support each other. Throughout this transition to virtual and hybrid events, there are still ways that planners and suppliers can partner, and we must hold those important conversations to create opportunities. While we have not met face-to-face for many months now, we have been able to keep members connected through virtual education, networking trivia, and Spark Sessions. We appreciate all the attendees and exhibitors who participated in our Virtual Tradeshow and Education. I hope that we delivered relevant and timely education that will increase your personal and professional development. The importance of high-quality education continues to be the foundation of our chapter and it will continue in new, innovative formats as we move forward. As a chapter, we are focused on member relationships, advocating for our members to receive financial support from global, and keeping our chapter in business. Again, I appreciate your support as we continue to bond together to be the MPI family we are and will always be. Where do you currently work and how long have you been there? American Society of Echocardiography, Durham, NC; Since 12/17/2018. Tell me about your position and the organization you are with. We are a medical association of professionals working to advance cardiovascular ultrasound and improve lives through excellence in education, research, innovation, advocacy and service to the profession and the public. I am a meeting planner for our live courses offered in conjunction with our education department. What are your hobbies? Reading Scandinavian murder mysteries, learning Swedish, running, and gardening. What do you do for fun? Kickboxing. Why did you join MPI Carolinas? I’ll admit, it came with my WEC conference registration, but getting the membership with the conference registration was an incentive to coming to WEC 2020 my first time. If you were able to meet a famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and why? I’m never good at this question, but someone pointed out to me I should say “Oprah Winfrey” because she’s met everyone – so she could tell me anything about anyone else! What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry? Start at a hotel and work front desk and reservations! What is your ideal vacation/vacation spot? The Caribbean.

MPI WEC Grapevine: Reunite for Recovery
Meeting professionals gathered online and in person for MPI’s annual World Education Congress. Themed “Reunite for Recovery,” the hybrid event focused on community and the industry moving forward safely. More than 600 professionals attended the event in Grapevine, Texas, while 1,000+ participated virtually. Even though the event looked and felt different from prior years, it still offered opportunities for learning and networking. Nicole Keshler, national sales manager at Greater Raleigh CVB, compared her virtual experience with previous WECs, summarizing her experience with the following pros/cons list: Pros: •
Great education and much needed content

Opportunity to network, even virtually

One-on-one appointments in the appointment platform that is open the whole month of November (Hosted Buyer program)

Sense of community and engagement

Live interviews with in-person meeting attendees and MPI administration

Tradeshow platform was lacking from a profile standpoint
Christine Irwin, CMP, meeting planner with The Management Office, also attended virtually. “While it wasn't the same as being in person, I thought that Global did a really good job of thinking through how to make it a true hybrid event,” she said. “During the general sessions, I felt super engaged...almost as if they were catering more to us virtually than in-person attendees. Virtual attendees were also using the chat function the entire time, so it was nice to be able to talk to others throughout the general sessions.” Irwin noted the breakout sessions for the virtual audience weren't pre-recorded or streamed from the live sessions. The speakers presented their session once for the in-person audience and a second time online specifically for the virtual audience. For myself, WEC was the first in-person conference I attended in 2020. WEC was a good opportunity to experience and learn best practices for hosting meetings during COVID times, as well as attend presentations on topics such as inclusive leadership and contracts and liability. I’m grateful to the MPI Foundation for my WEC scholarship. Without the scholarship, I would not have been able to participate. A few takeaways from the in-person event: Partnership is key. MPI and the Gaylord Texas worked together to have several hand sanitizer stations placed throughout the venue, signage (on walls, floors and screens) for physical distancing and safety reminders, and plexiglass partitions at buffet stations between attendees and servers. MPI WEC Grapevine: Reunite for Recovery Continued from page 19 Physicians, S.C., provided on-site daily temperature checks and medical care, if needed. More communication is better. Even with a mobile app and signage, there was still some confusion about when you needed a wristband, whether you were supposed to go to the same seat for the general sessions each day, the schedule, and what the protocol was for high temperatures and positive rapid COVID test results. It was also challenging for servers to hear attendees in the buffet line at lunch due to the live music, as well as for attendees reading the food station signs due to the small font size and placement of the signs. We need reminders. While plenty of precautions were taken by MPI, it’s easy for attendees to forget to change behaviors that were once considered normal at meetings. For example, while the hotel added adapters to the coffee and water urns so you can fill your cup without pressing the lever with your hand, some people would forget they shouldn’t use the same cup for refills. And when it came to wearing masks, reminders still needed to be made. Volunteers held signs in hallways that said, “Mask up y’all,” and announcements were made in general sessions to “remember to wear your mask.” However, at the receptions and during breakout sessions, there were attendees spotted not wearing masks when they were not eating or drinking. Throughout the conference, many participants shared they were uncomfortable with directly confronting others about mask compliance. Throughout WEC, it was clear participants were excited to be together, in-person and online, and that we are all learning what works best when it comes to coronavirus event safety strategies.
