president’s message Success is Not Just Connecting WOW! Can you believe it is already fall? Where did the time go? First things first: I have to SHOUT OUT the Business XChange team and committee. I hope you had the chance to attend our September Chapter Meeting and Business XChange but if you didn’t, we missed you! The team’s goal was to continue to evolve the way we meet and do business. Overall the feedback has been so positive and to see the way it all came together on Friday morning was inspiring. We have so many passionate, excited, and smart MPI-CC members who want to help each other succeed. Business success is not just connecting with all the meeting planners in the room and leaving with 10 RFPs, it is building relationships with everyone because business can come from a supplier or a planner alike. That was certainly a great takeaway!

Two-and-a-half months into the new fiscal year and this Board already has so many great things happening! The first couple of weeks were spent getting accustomed to new roles and honing in on ideas that each department wanted to focus on. At this board meeting, we really put pen to paper to determine how and when all action items from the July board meeting would get accomplished. A task force will be put together to determine the best ways to increase planner attendance. The Office of the President will lead that task force and the goal is to begin implementing the new programs by the January meeting. Our Marketing/Communications team will be working hand-in-hand with Membership Engagement to work on how and when we are communicating to our members. We want to make sure that you are receiving the information you need, when you need it. These

departments will present their ideas to the Board at the Mid-Year Retreat in November. The Chapter was awarded a free membership renewal incentive to use this year for meeting certain metric goals with Global. The Board decided that this will be given to the Volunteer of the Year Award Winner at the Annual meeting. The Volunteer of the Year is chosen from each of the Helping Hand Award winners throughout the fiscal year, so be sure to nominate your peers! The Marketing Team is looking into new tools to use for our communications/email system. We hope to be able to implement a new platform along with a new registration system by the new year.

MPI-CC INDEPENDENT/SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS PILOT MEETING by Rod Abraham
On September 26, the first day of our Business XChange Chapter meeting, we had a one-hour “Meet-Up” of people interested in MPI’s Independent/Small Business Owners (ISBO) Community. ISBO is one of many “Communities” launched last year to meet the needs of special interest groups within MPI’s membership. Each community has its own Advisory Board to recommend activities to meet the needs of their group. All communities are managed by Kristi Sanders, CMP, CMM, HMCC, MPI’s Director of Community. (Note: This is a very challenging job handled with impressive dexterity and enthusiasm.) The purpose of this pilot meet-up was to explain the concept and gain feedback as to priorities as defined by attendees. Turn-out was small (several others expressed interest but were not able to attend), but the group was representative of a cross-section of the ISBO community. Most were seasoned veterans of the industry but indicated they really felt alone when it came to running a business, even if they were a one-person business. Simply put, we’re all good at managing or servicing meetings/events but most of us are new at running a business. Each person identified their biggest concern(s) with which they need help. How to generate business was at the top of the list (it always is). Technology and the business management side were also identified as concerns.

Three observations: 1.
Chapters that cover a large geographical area (like Carolinas) will have to offer sessions in multiple metro areas.
2.
Many who need help with the ABC’s may not be able to afford attending WEC. Meeting their needs may involve a combination of virtual, regional and chapter level activities.
3.
Networking opportunities are welcomed by all. Just to talk with someone who has the same challenges (and maybe has a solution that works for them) is both helpful and re-assuring.
