We all put our heads together and decided this would be the year. The year we break down barriers. The year we challenge ourselves and each other. new member spotlight New Member Spotlight: Sarah Casella by Amelia Hodges, CMM, CMP
Why did you join MPI-CC? I joined MPI-CC for several reasons. Mainly because it’s a great community to be a part of, not just professionally but personally. There’s a sense of belonging and purpose when you are a part of something bigger than yourself Sarah Casella and MPI-CC is a wonderful way to be involved. While I am a Meeting Planner, I work for a company in an industry that is very niche and no one else does what I do. Joining MPI-CC allows me to connect with so many more professionals who share a similar passion and profession, who I can learn from and lean on to grow and improve. Being a part of MPI-CC also provides great tools towards earning my CMP. I look forward to volunteering, joining committees, and taking advantage of every opportunity available. What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry? In the 4 years I’ve been out of school, I’ve worked in banquets, guest reception, conference services, catering, sales, weddings, and corporate planning. The advice I would give to someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry is do not be surprised if you end up hating what you thought you were going to love, and loving something you thought you were going to hate. You never know when your strengths and passions will align so take advantage of every opportunity that offers new experiences. What is your current role, and how did you get involved in the meeting industry? I am the Meeting & Event Planner for McGill & Hill Group. MHG is a financial, legal, and business consulting group that works exclusively with dentists and dental specialists. We are based in Charlotte but have clients all over the country. My role is to plan and coordinate all of our marketing and internal events (i.e. Continuing Education Seminars, Webinars, Trade Shows, Speaking Engagements, Town Hall Meetings, Staff Retreats, Holiday Parties, etc.). I hold a BSBA in Hospitality & Tourism Management from Appalachian State University. All throughout college and immediately after I worked

in hospitality. One opportunity after the next provided the necessary experience to qualify me for the role I’m in now. I have been with this company just over two years and it’s been a wonderful place to develop as a young meeting planner. What are your hobbies and what do you enjoy outside of event planning? I spend much of my downtime watching documentaries or reading about movies, television series, actors, directors, writers, etc. mostly from the “Golden Age of Hollywood.” I’m a huge Potterhead and Star Wars nerd! I have a knack for writing poems for special occasions my friends or family members are having. I enjoy staying active. I just completed my first obstacle course race and already signed up for two more plus my first half marathon. I have a pretty versatile vinyl collection that I love adding to. And of course, I love spending time with my friends and family whether it’s Bachelor nights, kickball games, concerts, ice cream runs, or enjoying a glass of wine in the backyard around the fire. n

Alan Kleinfeld, director of emergency planning at Arrive Conference Solutions, will bring three invaluable safety topics to the July meeting. With over 25 years in meeting management and over 15 years in public safety, Kleinfeld is an expert in the industry. His safety topics have included site selection, safety overview, emergency operations and event safety. board meeting highlights May Board Meeting Recap by Christine Irwin, CMP, The Management Office
May was a very busy, but very productive board meeting for the 2018-2019 Board of Directors. We welcomed our new 2019-2020 board members to join us for the board meeting to get a feel for how they run and to be part of the conversations regarding the 2019-2020 year. We approved a 2019-2020 budget, 18-month calendar and business plan. The incoming board has set their goals high and we are so excited about what this year is going to bring for the chapter. The Office of the President presented policy manual changes that reflect the positive changes we made on the board this year. Probably the most exciting conversation we had was around our 18-month calendar. For those that don’t know, we are moving our November 2019 meeting a week later to avoid coinciding with the AENC Fall meeting. We are thrilled to announce we will hold the majority of the meeting at the Omni Charlotte (downtown) with the networking reception at Strike City Bowling Alley at the EpiCentre. Yes, bowling will be included in your standard registration fee! Mark your calendars to join in on the fun. November 14-15, 2019 Omni Charlotte Hotel and Strike City – Charlotte, NC
options for a “Roadshow” around the two states. Stay tuned for more exciting information coming on that. The Board also voted to approve The Management Office contract for two more years. We are THRILLED to continue on this journey with MPI-CC and help the board and the membership make MPI-CC the best chapter it can be.
