Well, I don’t know about you but I have had enough winter weather!! Most of you all know that I am in the hotel business on the beach. I am accustomed to having to deal with the “H” word, hurricane, and the implications of that event in regards to meetings, reservation cancellations, etc. But, boy did I get a whole new education about weather last month with all that snow! I think I have lived in Eastern North Carolina too long--I was convinced it would be gone in a day and our MPI-CC chapter meeting would take place. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans. After Governor Cooper’s press conference, The Management Office, as well as members of the office of the President, got on the phone. For the safety of not only our members but also the hotel staff at the Embassy Suites Charlotte Uptown, we collectively made the decision to cancel the meeting. This was truly a lesson in crisis management to ensure the safety of meeting attendees. At the time of writing this message to you, we are still working through the implications of the cancellation. Be patient, we will get answers to you soon. Our March meeting is coming up soon. I am excited to welcome you all to the StateView Hotel in Raleigh March 15 – 16, 2018. I believe this is the first time in my 17 years with MPI-CC that we have had to cancel a meeting….I miss you all! n

My favorite part of MPI Chapter Meetings is getting to know our New Members! Our fantastic members are definitely what make us a successful chapter. Please take a minute to read and learn a little about Petrina Lawrence. We are so happy to have her as a member of the MPI-CC team!

Where do you currently work and how long have you been there?
I have worked at the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association for six years.
admired. I would enjoy having a conversation with him. What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry? I would recommend that someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry shadow or take advantage of an internship. This is a great business, but there are many levels to what we do that people looking in may not be aware of. I think people see what we do as somewhat glamorous, and it is. However, some things, such as budgeting for an event are not. There is value to knowing that there are many things involved with planning and executing an event to someone interested in pursuing a career in meeting planning. I also recommend that they start small. Begin by planning a small event. Once you’re ready to plan a large event, it’s helpful to view it as many small events. n
Tell me about your job and the organization you are with. I am the Project Manager in charge of all events, convention and affiliate members/sponsors. I love what I do and enjoy seeing projects come together. My biggest reward is seeing attendees enjoying the events and the gratitude from them for all that my team does. NCADA is a small trade association with only eight employees. It’s a fun, fast-paced environment. What are your hobbies and what do you do for fun? I love to garden, read and power walk! I’m very passionate about health and wellness and enjoy coaching others in my spare time. Why did you join MPI?

MPI-CC Celebrates Black History Month by Jean Travers
Black History Month started in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” a term coined by noted African American historian and scholar, Carter G. Woodson. Finally, 50 years later in 1976, Black History Month officially became a month-long celebration.
Myron Jones was chosen as our first black Supplier of the Year in 2016. Extremely active in the industry, Myron is also a two-time Pat-on-the-BackAward winner and a busy committee member. He serves our association as well as others in the industry with great care and prides himself on keeping a personal touch in his business.
At MPI-CC, we support black history all year long. This month on social media and in print, we are honored to share two of our amazing members’ stories that have made a tremendous impact on the success of our chapter.

A Uniquely Italian Experience SITE+MPI Global Forum- Rome, Italy, January 12-14, 2018 For the first time ever, Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI), partnered to gather the best and brightest across the meetings and incentive travel industries. This joint conference allowed industry members the opportunity to expand their skills in both specialties and network with key leaders across industries from around the world at one event, maximizing ROI and eliminating the need to attend two conferences this year. Proudly, MPI-CC was well-represented in Rome by myself (American Meetings & Events, Inc.) and Benny Williford (Pinnacle Keynote Speakers), both longtime members of the association. This historic event had over 600 meeting and incentive professionals from around the world, representing more than 50 countries. It was hosted by the Italian chapter of SITE and MPI and was an awesome experience. We started the Rome
adventure with a pre-meeting private tour of the unbelievably beautiful Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum. The innovative educational forum featured three highlighted presenters: Alrerto Angela, Paleontologist, Journalist- “A Day in the Life of Rome” Frans Johansson, CEO The Medici Group- “The Medici Effect-Unleash Creativity & Innovation” Julie Cottineau, Best-selling Author, former VP of Brand, Richard Branson’s Virgin Company- “Twist Your Experience-Take the Magic Home” It was a three day forum filled with outstanding sessions and interesting people from around the globe. We experienced a collaborative, exclusive environment for networking and business exchanges. The final night’s elegant dinner was a celebration at Villa Miani, former host venue of the G7 Summit, overlooking the scenic city of Rome. And, oh yes, the food! Perfect pizza and wonderful wine! Delightful cuisine and beautiful, friendly people. Ancient history surrounded us every place we looked and walked. We enjoyed meeting lots of new friends from a variety of cultures and countries. It was truly an educational, fun, and memorable experience in every way. Ready to go again! n

Kennedy “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” – Warren Bennis Over the last several months, the Nominating Committee reviewed board applications, interviewed candidates and asked, “What does the future of the MPI Carolinas Chapter Board of Directors look like?” The discussions were very purposeful and mindful of the future of the Carolinas Chapter and took into consideration where the member is looking to grow personally and professionally within the Chapter. The committee looked at each nominee’s individual skills, dedication and integrity to provide outstanding leadership to our chapter during his or her term of office. Our 2018-2019 Board Members are dedicated leaders with a strong passion for the Carolinas Chapter and they have served the chapter in a number of ways. As a chapter, we approved the 2018-2019 Board Slate and these leaders were presented to MPI Global. Please congratulate the following members and make plans to attend the Annual Meeting in Wilmington, NC, where these leaders will be installed during the awards banquet on May 17, 2018.
