president’s message Are you channeling your inner freak? by Alyce Kelly, CHSP
Freak Out! I feel like I need to write this in pink ink...our speaker, Dave Rendall, was on point with his message. I bought the book and I am trying hard to incorporate his message into everyday issues. I hope you all are as well. Graylyn did an amazing job of making our chapter feel welcome and special. The food was wonderful and the band was terrific on Thursday evening during the reception.

We had our first board meeting of the year and one of the decisions that we made was to earmark money to go to the MPI Foundation for scholarships. If you haven’t done so, I encourage you to log onto the Global website (http://www.mpiweb.org/foundation/Grantsand-Scholarships) and research the scholarships that are available to all members. I have personally received one, know others that have received scholarships and our chapter as a whole has received two scholarships. There are opportunities for scholarships to attend chapter meetings, WEC, CMP designation, etc. This is a huge benefit of your membership in MPI. Don’t let it go by. Our chapter has such a good vibe right now with excitement from new members and us “old timers.” Let’s keep that energy going. September will be awesome with our Business Exchange in Raleigh at the Marriott Crabtree; they always go above and beyond.

Mary G. Mora
I am the Abundant Talent Connector and Owner of MGM Speakers Bureau, a Talent Agency. Our business doors opened officially January 2009.
Tell me about your job and the organization you are with. MGM Speakers Bureau is based in North Carolina and available worldwide. Connecting companies, associations, non-profit and for profit organizations, event and meeting professionals, who are looking for customized programs that ignite and inspire participants to take action, is my job priority. Our roster includes inspirational, keynote and motivational speakers; entertainers; masters of ceremony; athletes; international authors; training consultants; life/business coaches, and more! What are your hobbies and what do you do for fun? I enjoy meeting new people, reading, and trying new recipes.
Why did you join MPI-CC? I did research on organizations to join and MPI and MPICC were always at the top. Learning more about the industry that I participate in and work with, and building those relationships is a plus. If you were able to meet a famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and why? I would have enjoyed meeting Jackie Kennedy Onassis. I think that behind her gentle persona she was a very strong and intelligent woman, with a great sense of style. What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry? Although the hours may be long and at the beginning, the pay may be low, persistence and education do pay off. MPI has all the resources that you need to advance in your job. Visiting locations, attending events, and making connections make it all worth it. n

The July MPI-CC chapter meeting, held at the Graylyn International Conference Center in Winston-Salem, NC, focused on differentiation and uniqueness. David Rendall, author of The Freak Factor, delivered two powerful education sessions exploring how weaknesses can be positioned for success. On July 27, Rendall shared how organizations and individuals can innovate by differentiating themselves from the competition. In “Oppositioning: One Surprising Strategy for Innovation and Differentiation,” Rendall suggested organizations and individuals capitalize on their uniqueness and use their apparent weaknesses to their advantage. Companies tend to strategize using the same strengths and weaknesses as their competitors, which leads to companies looking alike to the customer, Rendall explained. Rather, companies should expand on what makes them different from the competition. Rendall shared examples of organizations going against industry trends. One such company was the outdoor gear and apparel retailer REI. Instead of pushing customers to shop on Black Friday, REI encouraged them to enjoy the outdoors with their loved ones. REI closed its stores on Black Friday and paid its employees to take the day off. By doing so, REI reinforced its culture and values, which

resonated with its core customer base. In the July 28 session, “The Freak Factor: Discovering Uniqueness by Flaunting Weakness,” Rendall encouraged audience members to build on their strengths instead of trying to fix their weaknesses. Uniqueness can be reframed in a positive way, he explained. “What makes us weird also makes us wonderful,” Rendall stressed. “What makes us weak also makes us strong.” Rendall recommended appreciating and amplifying weaknesses instead of eliminating them. He encouraged audience members to create situations in which their strengths are maximized and they are not rejected for their weaknesses. “Don’t try to fit in,” he advised. “Find the right fit.” n

The Education & Business Exchange on September 28 & 29 will include a useful range of professional development sessions for MPI-CC members, such as a session based on the belief that good communication skills are the foundation of relationships and the lifeblood of effective leadership, teamwork, and organizational performance. The event will take place at the newly renovated Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley Mall Hotel. Thursday’s session titled “Conscious Communication for Leadership & Teamwork” will be led by the communication expert Dr. Rick Brinkman. You may realize the importance of a project or idea, but how do you communicate it effectively to others so it’s not only understood, but also embraced? In this session, attendees can expect to learn verbal and nonverbal cues that persuasive people use to influence and motivate others. This program reveals the skills you unconsciously use, so you can use them on purpose in your most challenging relationships. Attendees will learn the language of influence that positively affects the behavior of team members on a daily basis, and how to choose the right format and timing for your message.

Beth Tanner, Program Specialist at Duke Cancer Network and MPI-CC Planner, just completed another successful three-day meeting hosted by MPI-CC member hotel, the Omni Grove Park Inn, in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Beth looked to members of MPI-CC and partnered with Jean Travers of HelmsBriscoe and Allison Locke of the Grove Park Inn to make this a very successful event for all. Asheville is a great place to have a meeting! The Silent Auction committee is already working hard to raise money for MPI-CC and has successfully raised over $1,400 with our raffle, silent auction and Bidding for Good in July. Bidding for Good will happen again in September 2017, November 2017, January 2018 and March 2018, and coincide with raffles and silent auctions.
