Why did you join MPI-CC? I joined MPI because I wanted to be able to network with industry professionals to get fresh ideas. Things are always changing and it’s great to be able to see what is trending! What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in our industry?
What led you to your current position at Carolinas AGC? I have been with Carolinas AGC for 13 years and have worked in multiple departments. When this job [Director of Meetings and Events] became available, I thought it would be a great fit. I love it, even though planning 90-100 meetings & events per year can get a little overwhelming at times. I have a great team that is always there when I need them. What are your hobbies and what do you enjoy outside of event planning? I have 2.5-year-old twin girls, McKenzie and Brooklyn, so all my spare time is spent chasing them around and finding new things to keep them entertained. n

Any number of scenarios can put meeting planners and their attendees in danger, from wildfires and mass shootings to power outages and even a power cord that has not been taped down. Alan Kleinfeld, CMP, trained by the Department of Homeland Security and an expert on event safety and security shared with more than 75 meeting professionals in attendance several key areas on which to focus. It can be overwhelming as we think of the things that can go wrong and it is that fear of the unknown that sometimes prevents us from taking everyday precautions regarding the safety and security of our surroundings. Examples were brought up, such as private security for high profile individuals to obligations of venues to provide written Active Shooter Plans. Members of the audience were quick to share personal experiences involving safety issues. (I wonder who is going to guard that Judge?)
Get your checklist started: medical emergency, fire, food allergies, airborne disease, active shooter, weather event, crowd control, lighting, drone usage and so much more. (Who knew drones were an issue?) Thank you, Alan, for the great list of resources (posted on our MPI-CC Facebook page). MPI-CC at World Education Congress in Toronto by Nicole Keshler
Wow! What a turnout we had all the way up in Toronto for MPI’s World Education Congress. MPI-Carolinas Chapter ended up having nearly 50 members in attendance at WEC. If you haven’t had a chance to attend MPI’s largest education conference I strongly recommend you take the time to apply for a scholarship through the MPI Foundation. WEC provides a great chance to gain 10-15 CEUs, network with members from across the world, and enjoy a new city with your chapter friends. The education alone is well worth your time out of the office. MPI really kicks it into high gear at WEC and brings in the best speakers and educators. I have only attended twice now but I know some of our members have attended for over 10 years and have had many memorable experiences. WEC is also a chance to do business. There is a hosted buyer program for planners and suppliers to meet one-on-one and hopefully connect for future business opportunities.

A First-Timer Goes to WEC on Scholarship by Mica Parekh, CMP
As a first-time WEC attendee on a scholarship kindly provided by our MPI Foundation, I was overwhelmed in a good way by all the education choices that were available to me in this amazing industry. The event was organized phenomenally. The speakers were dynamic and full of life ~ happy to give us all they had to help us be better in our industry! The whole experience motivated and inspired me in so many ways! As good as the education was the networking, which is invaluable to my business. The event not only promoted networking but laid the ground work for an amazing networking experience in the days ahead of the event. My take-aways are the education and the relationships that were built at this meeting. I am forever grateful for the opportunity!

Our first Board meeting of the year was a very enthusiastic and productive one. You could feel the energy radiating from every single board member! We started out the Board meeting with takeaways from MPI Global’s Chapter Business Summit in which we were fortunate to have five of our board members attend. Each person in attendance sat in sessions pertinent to their department and they all came back with some really great ideas from Global and other chapters. We’re excited to start implementing a lot of those ideas this year! We then moved on to a strategic discussion surrounding our fall Business XChange and overall chapter planner attendance and engagement. The XChange team presented some exciting things they are working on for this year’s event including a modified format where we will mix traditional trade show networking with one-on-one planner appointments.
The Education team is going to tie in some very relevant sessions to this event. This year’s event will be a nice segue into the 2020 MPI-CC Roadshow. In regards to planner attendance and engagement within the chapter, we spent a good amount of time coming up with ideas and ways we can increase this across the board. We are looking to change the way we operate – making our events and association more meaningful for planners to become engaged in. We won’t give away all our exciting new ideas, but just know that your Board has this top of mind and will be working diligently this year to make changes. Look for more to come VERY soon! MEETINGS MEAN BUSINESS by Molly Johnson, CMP
By now you have heard of Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) which is celebrated across the globe every April. We spend a good one to two months ramping up to this one day to advocate for our industry and then don’t really think about it again until the next year. Why aren’t we letting people know about the contributions our industry makes all year round? The meetings industry creates jobs and stimulates the economy. We should be proud to be in an industry that impacts our communities in such a positive way and share what we do with every opportunity we have.
FORWARD MOMENTUM It Comes Naturally.
Here are some things that you can do to keep the momentum going all year: • Be sure to let every planner that hosts a conference in your town or at your facility know what the economic impact of their event was to your city. Often planners are not aware of the true impact their event has; they are a great resource in spreading the value of meetings. In addition to the financial impact, let the planner know how many employees worked thanks to their meetings. (Hotels can get the economic impact of a group amount from their local Convention and Visitor Bureau.) • Use social media to thank groups when they depart and include what the economic impact was so your local followers are aware. Also include any CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activity the group may have done to help the local community. • Whenever possible, invite the local press to cover a conference you are hosting. The more that local residents are aware of the impact that conferences have on our cities, the better. Also, have the press include how much visitors offset local taxes. • Know your stats so you can share at events where you may be socializing with your elected officials. Remember, anyone can run for office but most of them have no clue about our industry and what it brings to our economy so we need to educate them when we have an opportunity. • Check the Meeting Mean Business website regularly for social media campaigns that you can share as well as other tools. Face-to-face meetings have been taking place since the beginning of time and they have shaped the world we live in today. Every meeting we host is important to that group and is part of their history. What a great feeling to know every day, we make history working in this impactful industry.
