By 2025, Shaw had expanded Ambitious into a fully integrated IP-acquisition and packaging studio, producing content for streaming services, major studios, and international markets. In 2009 Shaw founded Odyssey Media Inc., a boutique studio designed for lower-risk international co-productions. Backed by a $25 million investment fund, he financed over 20 films with combined budgets exceeding $70 million.
Odyssey Media’s notable productions include Drive Hard (filmed in Australia with John Cusack), Pound of Flesh (filmed in China with Jean-Claude Van Damme), and The Town That Came A-Courting (filmed in Canada with Valerie Harper), adapted from a best-selling novel.
Founder – Insight Film Studios
Shaw began his career in 1990 with the creation of Insight Film Studios. Initially producing audio guides for museums, the company soon moved into visual production, creating documentaries and the series Inside Track.
By the early 2000s, Insight shifted toward long-form projects, starting with the 2002 sci-fi film Maximum Surge, made for DVD. Shaw built Insight into Canada’s largest independent film and television production company, producing over 130 titles and managing budgets exceeding $200 million annually.
Significant productions from this period include Battle in Seattle (2007), a political drama with Charlize Theron and Woody Harrelson that earned Leo Award nominations; Helen (2009), starring Ashley Judd, who won a Leo Award for her role; and The Hurt Locker (2008), directed by Kathryn Bigelow, which earned both Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards. Other works include When A Man Falls, starring Timothy Hutton and Sharon Stone, and Personal Effects, starring Ashton Kutcher.
Television credits include the Lifetime series Blood Ties and the Sci Fi series Painkiller Jane. By the mid-2000s, Insight Film Studios had supported thousands of jobs and had contributed over CAD 500 million in economic impact.

Early Career and Education
Shaw studied journalism at Douglas College in British Columbia with an initial goal of becoming a writer. In 1978, he helped launch the Edmonton Sun newspaper, gaining valuable experience in operations and leadership.
In the 1980s, Shaw worked in the computer industry before turning to film production. He studied screenwriting at the Vancouver Film School. He participated in a program through the National Screen Institute (NSI) of Canada that focused on producing for film, television, and digital media.
The NSI program’s producing module covered key skills such as project development, budgeting, financing and funding strategies, production management, scheduling, working with creative teams, and planning distribution and marketing for screen content.
