Thoughts on 'Service' from the Junior School

Page 1

‘SERVICE’ From the Junior School

Service is one of the Round Square IDEALS. On their website it is defined as:

• A spirit of service celebrates personal development through practical experience bringing sustainable support and benefit to others. Keenness and ability to learn in real-world contexts delivers meaningful and lasting value to others as well as to the primary learner. A n understanding and respect for cultural difference develops through shared experience and partnership

• Co-creation of knowledge is underpinned by a genuine desire to work collaboratively to the benefit of individuals, a neighbourhood, city, nation or internationally. Practical experience provokes an emotional and intellectual response, and periods of reflection develop personal literacy through mindful consideration of ability, motivation, beliefs, perceptions, goals and ambition.

• A person living out a spirit of service considers the opportunity, in all aspects of everyday life, to provide for the needs of others and take social action. They seek to ensure that their impact, and the difference they make in the world, are positive. Socially responsible decision-making infuses every area of life from employment and business to personal, financial and domestic decisions.

• Knowledge of how wealth is created, earned, used and managed by individuals and organisations enables consideration of the ethical and social impacts of financial decisions. This develops understanding of how the right application, investment and donation of financial resource can positively impact an individual, community or wider society.

What does Service look like in the Junior School?

Stage 3 Leadership Program

The concept of servant leadership is emphasised with our Year 5 and Year 6 students. This is tied into the Uniting Church ethos through identifying Jesus as a role model for servant leadership.

All our Year 6 students are considered leaders and given leadership opportunities by working in their House teams to prepare and run events for other students, including the House Muster and Round Square Day. Our Year 6 students assist on Morning Duty to greet students when they arrive at school and run assemblies.

Our Year 5 students act as buddies for our Kindergarten students. They help our Kindergarten students adjust to formal schooling, accompanying them in the playground while they settle into formal schooling.

Service-Learning Projects

In Term 2, our School supports a local organisation by donating goods. Our Year 6 House Teams devise a way to support the organisation and then coordinate the student donations. We celebrate these contributions with a Service-Learning Chapel Service.

Eat Up Australia

Kinross Wolaroi School supports Eat Up Australia, an organisation that provides free lunches to vulnerable children. The Junior School Houses are part of the sandwich making roster. Once a term, one of our Houses spends a lunchtime making sandwiches which are delivered to schools in our local area

Bluey uses her imagination to turn everyday moments into fun adventures full of play, learning and social interactions.

Bluey’s character aligns beautifully with the school values, Courage, Respect, Inclusiveness, Resilience and Commitment. These values play an integral role in our day-to-day interactions with the children.

Throughout the year Bluey will help us explore friendships and our curiosity about the world around us.

Bluey will encourage us to find our voice, guide us to listen, be mindful and show us how to be caring and kind. Pre-Kinder are so excited to start their adventures with Bluey.

Bluey has been chosen to be Pre-Kinder’s class mascot.

KINDERGARTEN SNOWY

Our class name is inspired by Hedwig, Harry Potter’s faithful snowy owl- an enduring symbol of loyalty, service, and gentle strength. Just as Hedwig serves her friends with dedication, courage, and quiet care, we will be exploring what it means to serve others in our class, our school, and our wider community

By working together in a spirit of service and celebrating each other’s unique gifts, we can create a warm and supportive environment where every learner thrives. We’re excited for all that lies ahead for Kindergarten Snowy and can’t wait to begin this magical journey of learning and discovery together.

KINDER BEES

Welcome to The Hive

Our class is like a busy beehive we are kind, brave and we look for ways to help our friends, our classroom and our world. Just like bees work together, we learn and grow as a team.

Bees might be small, but they don’t give up. When learning feels tricky, we keep trying, try new things, and learn from our mistakes.

Every bee has an important job in the hive, and every person in our class matters too. We share, take turns, listen, and use kind words so everyone feels safe and included.

Bees are curious explorers, and we are too! We love discovering new things and learning how our actions can help others.

When we are kind, helpful and responsible, we build strong friendships and learn that even small actions can make a big difference.

1E have been named after the Earnest the Elephant. Ernest is the baby in a herd of elephants. This wonderful tale explores how we can get into difficulties and the people you least expect can help and do. Ernest becomes frightened when he finds himself all alone and lost in the jungle. Despite his size the mouse is able to direct Ernest back to the herd and the little elephant is reunited with his mother. The story will be used as a springboard to talk of students own adventures, where they may take risks but with the surety that there is always someone to help you.

1 HORTON 1 HORTON Welcome to

Our class is named after Horton from Horton Hears a Who! by Dr Seuss Horton shows a true spirit of service by noticing when others need help, listening with care, and choosing to take action for the good of others, even when it is not easy. When he hears the tiny Whos, he listens carefully and chooses to help them, even when others do not He takes responsibility for keeping them safe and stands up for what is right. Horton thinks about the needs of others and takes action to help his community In our class, we aim to show service by caring for others, working together, and helping everyone feel valued and included

Year 3 Baymax

Our class chose Baymax from Big Hero Six. He was created with the sole purpose of helping others, Baymax learns and grows through real‑world experiences, showing unwavering commitment to supporting the wellbeing of those around him. His interactions with the wider community demonstrate a deep respect for individual needs, emotions and abilities. He consistently prioritises the needs of others, responds with empathy, and evaluates the impact of his choices to ensure they contribute positively to the wellbeing of individuals and the community.

YEAR 6 UNITY

Joining hands to serve our community

Unity is our class name because it reflects who we are and how we serve Guided by the Round Square ideal of Service, Unity means standing together to help others, support our local community, and take action to make a positive difference. We look beyond ourselves to the wider world, knowing that even small acts of service can create meaningful change

Together, we learn. Together, we serve. Together, we are Unity.
