PREKINDER - TERM 2

TERM OVERVIEW

PRE-KINDER TERM 2 2026

During Term 2, we look forward to continuing to extend and build on each child’s developing skills in a supportiv e and engaging environment. As friendships grow and strengthen, we will prov ide opportunities for children to further develop their social confidence and communication within the group. Physical development remains a key focus, with experiences designed to support both large muscle movement and fine motor skills. Our group times will continue to be fun and meaningful part of the day, where new concepts are introduced and children can further develop their literacy and numeracy understandings. We a re excited to build on the foundations from Term 1 and to see each child continue to flourish.

OUR APPROACHES TO LEARNING FOR TERM 2

In Term 2, our approach to learning continues to focus on fostering curiosity, confidence, and a genuine love of learning Through a balance of play -based experiences and intentional teaching, educators will support children moment by moment -asking questions, extending thinking and guiding new discoveries. We encourage children to take risks, have a go and understand that learning is a process that takes time and practice. Group times, hands -on activities and everyday interactions all provide opportunities for children to build independence, resilience and problem -solving skills. We aim for each child to feel confident to explore, participate and engage in their learning.

PREKINDER - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

The Pre-Lit Program will continue to support the children’s early literacy skills. Grounded in evidencebased practices, Pre-Lit offers a systematic, skills -based approach applicable to all students, establishing a robust foundation for reading acquisition. This term we will expand their knowledge of syllables and segmenting words, letter awareness and identifying beginning sounds.

Term 2 we introduce the children to our Letterland Program. Letterland is a multisensory way to teach children about letters and sounds.

The letters for this term are M, S, T, A, F, D, I, R, G, O

SCIENCE

In a preschool environment, Science is naturally woven into children’s play as they explore, question and make sense of the world around them. Through activities such as water and sand play, building, painting and outdoor exploration, the children experiment, observe changes and develop early inquiry skills

No doubt Professor Squigglebotoom will make an appearance to do an experiment.

VISUAL ARTS

MATHEMATICS

Students will build on their knowledge of numbers 1 -5. We will continue to break each number down and build our understanding of what each number means. We will continue to practice our colours and shapes and introduce repeating patterns to the children.

HSIE

W e will focus on helping children develop a strong sense of belonging and connection to the world. Through our weekly themes, children will explore different aspects of their environment, community and relationships in a meaningful way. We will provide opportunities for the children to ask questions, share their ideas and build an awa reness of how they fit withing their classroom, community and the wider world.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will explore speaking and singing voices through a range of vocal exploration activities, songs, and chants linked to the weekly learning themes. They will develop listening skills by hearing and identifying contrasts such as high/low, fast/slow, and sound/silence. Students will respond to a wide variety of folk and cla ssical music through movement.

PREKINDER - TERM 2

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

PreKinder work on SeeSaw in relation to the weekly themes.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Through songs and storytelling, Pre K will explore some of the foundational stories in the bible. We take time to think about what morals might be in each story and we practice listening to each other.

WELLBEING

We will continue to make social interactions our focus. Giving the children language and tools to cope in a variety of social situations. The valued characters and Bluey will be there to help us deliver and develop these skills.

Using the framework from URSTRONG we will learn about the friend-o-meter and what the coloured zones mean and how to move between them.

PDHPE

Students will continue to develop locomotor skills such as running, jumping, hopping and galloping. In addition, we will continue to explore ball skills such as catching, throwing, kicking, underarm rolling and striking. Students will be given opportunities to perform and analyse various situations that utilise these fundamental movement skills and investigate ways of performing the above skills individually and as part of a group.

LIBRARY

Throughout weekly library lessons, students are encouraged to foster a love of books, by exploring a wide range of literature. Students will respond to a range of texts by drawing on their own experiences, their imagination, and sharing their ideas. Students are encouraged to borrow in each session.

PREKINDER - TERM 2

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• Pre-K hours

Doors will open 8:40am ready to start our day. Please sign your child in each day. Pre-K ends 3 :00 pm. If your child is attending Gowrie they will move to that space.

• Libra ry Days : Every Tuesday and Friday. Please pack a library bag.

• PE Days: Every Tuesday and Friday. Please wear the play -based uniform and joggers .

• Information: Please check your information pockets and the notice board in the foyer on a regular basis.

• Drink bottle: We encourage students to drink water regularly at school. Please ensure they pack their own drink bottle every day.

• Clothing As we move into the cooler months, please make sure your child has appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. In Term s 2 and 3 , just pack a coat everyday just to be sure. Even if the weather is cold, it is important we get outside to play.

• Spare clothes: Please ensure your child always has a change of clothes in their bags

COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHOOL

Open and honest communication between parents and Pre-kinder teachers is essential to supporting each child’s learning and wellbeing. We value strong partnerships with families and encourage parents to share information, ask questions, and celebrate successes with us. On a day -to-day basis, parents have regular contact with the Pre-Kinder staff to share updates or ask questions. If a matter requires more time or a deeper discussion, a longer meeting can be arranged

KINDERGARTEN - TERM 2

TERM OVERVIEW

TERM 2 2026

A very warm welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had a lovely holiday with your families. It has been a delight to welcome the children back into the classroom and to hear the many adventures had over the break. Term 2 brings not only the colder weather, but another term of exciting learning in K indergarten. In addition to our classroom learning, students will be involved in the Athletics Carnival, National Simultaneous Storytime and a visit to Millthorpe Museum. Please monitor The Hub for further details.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher via the school diary or Junior School office email throughout the term , if you have any matter to discuss.

APPROACHES TO TEACHING AND LEARNING IN TERM 2

Our program balances formal learning opportunities with a range of hands -on tasks and play based experiences across the subject areas.

We will continue to distribute homework books every Monday. Please return books on Friday and ensure they travel to and from school in their plastic pockets for longevity. When your child is confident in recalling, reading and blending sounds together he/she is ready to share home readers with you. Readers will be sent home on a Monday, to be returned the following Friday. Please ensure you sign the yellow reading log every time your child reads. Each child is on their own reading journey and will be ready for readers at different times. We will be holding a Reading Information Evening on Monday , 4 May 5 :30pm in the Kindergarten classroom This session will provide families with an overview of our reading program, including our approach to phonics, how reading skills are explicitly taught, and ways you can support your child’s reading development at home.

KINDERGARTEN - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEWS

ENGLISH

By the end of Term 2 students will have been taught all 26 sounds and letter names. They will practise:

- applying this knowledge when spelling and reading

- blending and segmenting 3 and 4 letter words fluently

- writing simple sentences including full stops

- learn high frequency ‘tricky’ words Through our storybook sessions they will:

- practise their speaking and listening skills

- explore narrative and procedural text types develop comprehension strategies, including making predictions and connections

SCIENCE

Our question: How do the properties of materials affect how they are used? Students will explore different materials using their senses, investigating how they can be bent and stretched. They will use descriptive language to share their observations and discover how materials are chosen for everyday objects

VISUAL ARTS

Students will explore different kinds of things and experiences in their making of artworks this term. They will explore art forms, including painting, printmaking and fibre while making artworks. Art appreciating will focus on the work of Henri Matisse, in particular his technique ‘Drawing with scissors.’

MATHEMATICS

Students will build upon and develop the skills taught in Term 1. We will be covering the following topic areas:

- Data and position

- 3D shapes

- numbers to 20

- Addition and subtraction

- Forming and sharing groups (foundations of multiplication and division)

We will focus on developing these skills through explicit teaching and hands on lessons using manipulatives.

HSIE

This term students will learn about their own history and that of their family. As participants in their own history, students build on their knowledge and understanding of how the past is different from the present.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will continue to explore speaking and singing voices through various vocal exploration activities, songs and chants. They will develop skills in hearing and identifying different elements of music. Students will respond to music through movement listening to a wide variety of music.

KINDERGARTEN - TERM 2

WELLBEING

In Term 2, we will explore how we grow and learn new things. Students will practice setting simple goals, trying their best, and being brave when things feel tricky. We will focus on building positive habits and understanding that making mistakes helps us learn.

PDHPE

In PDHPE students will identify how respectful relationships and safety contribute to wellbeing, with a specific focus on personal safety. Students learn to recognise trusted people they can go to for help, understand what private means in relation to their body and personal boundaries, and begin to explore the concept of consent in simple, age-appropriate ways. Students in PE will start ball movement games focusing on passing, throwing, and catching while continuing to develop skills to work as part of a team.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

In Religious Education this term we will be looking at characters in the Bible whose lives were changed by God and how they became Bible Heroes. We look at how God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

In Digital Technology students will design and create a cubby house using different three-dimensional tools. They will develop their skills in computer assisted design using applications such as Minecraft Education and Tinkercad. As a class they will design and print a cubby house in 3D using our 3D printers.

LIBRARY

The focus in library is how we can learn about others and their unique family structure through stories in picture books. Other key events will be addressed such as ANZAC Day, Mothers’ Day, National Simultaneous Story Time, and Reconciliation Week. Borrowing of resources is included in each library lesson.

Diaries are for students and teachers to record goals and events and to teach students how to organise themselves. Students need to have their diary with them every day.

Welcome to Term 2 in Year 1 for 2026. We are excited to be working alongside you and your children this year as we embark on many great learning experiences and adventures. Our aim as Year 1 classroom teachers is to provide an engaging, safe and challenging learning environment where children can enjoy the opportunities presented. We look forward to working with your children to support their academic, social and emotional growth throughout the year ahead.

YEAR 1 - TERM 2

WELCOME BACK

Dear Year 1 Families,

Welcome back to Term 2 after, a refreshing holiday break. A full program is planned for the term which will help develop the whole child. Winter will soon be upon us with chilly mornings ahead. Please pack a coat or warm puffer vest so that your child keeps warm and the cooler weather doesn’t sneak up and surprise us . We have an exciting term exploring our Key Learning Areas of Science and Geography where we will be learning about Australian megafauna and exploring Orange as the ‘Colour City’.

Reading groups has become a much-loved activity during the Year 1 learning week. Term 2, will see the class build their recall of high frequency words, reading fluency and develop skills in comprehension and vocabulary.

HOME LEARNING

Each week, the Home Learning folder will arrive home on Monday and is due back to school on Friday. The students are to complete three pages of their Home Learning Activity book. Home learning consists of spelling and rhyming words, reading words, an English activity alongside a mathematics basic skills page. Each activity has been designed for a consistent and predictable review of learning that has occurred in the classroom, with the idea that students should be able to complete independently but under supervision. Students should spend a total of ten minutes on learning activities and ten minutes of reading out loud A ‘Home Reading Diary’ will be included to record the home reading students have completed each week.

FABULOUS FRIENDS FOLDER

This year, Year 1 students will have the opportunity to add to a class ‘Fabulous Friends’ folder. One child each week is assigned author rights as they follow the prompts listed to record information about their hobbies, things they enjoy doing and special facts about their families. Children might like to include photographs of special events, holidays and important people to them. The folder will arrive home on a Monday and over the course of the week children can build their entry, returning the folder the following Monday. All entries will be shared with the class, offering further opportunities for the children to develop their oral communication and listening skills. The ‘Fabulous Friends Folder’ will begin its household visits in T erm 2. Enjoy sharing the folder with your family.

YEAR 1 - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEWS

ENGLISH

English

This unit covers -

-Instruction of phonemes, digraphs including oral and written reviews

-Learning and reading tricky words

-Grammar - nouns and verbs

-Storybook lessons where each session had a particular focus: comprehension, visualisation and story summarising, oral expression, vocabulary work, creative writing

-Sentence writing - capital letters and full stops , compound sentences.

SCIENCE- GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

In this unit, students will explore evidence of the past that provides us with information about animals that have become extinct, such as dinosaurs, mammoths , and the Tasmanian Tiger (thylacine). They will examine the evidence (fossils, skeletons, photos and video images), posing questions to gather data about what we know about these animals: their size, appearance, diet, movement, time of existence etc, as well as learning about the possible reasons for their demise. Students will consider the authority of the information collected, drawing comparisons with personal data. They will draw upon this data to write explanations for their disappearance, outlining the causes and effects through simple and compound sentences.

MATHEMATICS

Your child will be working through hands on learning activities around the syllabus strands Working Mathematically, Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability.

Learning focus for Term 2 will include: review of basic skills.

Weeks 1 -2 - Two-digit numbers and beyond, counting sequences of ones and tens, groups of ten in whole numbers.

Week 3 - 2D shapes

Week 4 – Combining and separating numbers

Week 5 - Forming groups (multiplication and division)

Week 6 - Two- Dimensional Spatial structure (Area)

Week 7 - 2D shapes and transformation

Week 8 - Three-dimensional spatial structure (3D objects)

HSIE-GEOGRAPHY

Students will study our city Orange the colour city. It is known as ‘The Colour City’ due to its distinct seasons. They will investigate different places and spaces around Orange.

YEAR 1 - TERM 2

VISUAL ARTS

Students will explore different kinds of subject matter and concepts in their making of artworks this term. They will explore the art forms, including painting and printmaking. Art appreciating will focus on the work of Vincent van Gogh.

WELLBEING

Students are reminded of the Kinross Wolaroi expectations and routines. A strong focus is placed on fostering a warm and inclusive sense of belonging within the classroom, with particular emphasis on the School Value of Respect. Through learning about friendships, students revisit whole-school language and develop respectful ways to communicate, cooperate and resolve challenges, adding practical strategies to their wellbeing toolbox.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Year 1 Will be learning how our school values are based in biblical stories. We will read stories from the bible and try to identify the school value we can see in the story. Year one will then get the chance to reflect on where they can demonstrate that value at school.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

In Digital Technology this term the students will create a stop motion animation report in conjunction with their Science and Technology unit examining dinosaurs. Movie-making skills that are developed include filming, editing and adding audio.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will listen to, respond and sing a range of songs with a theme of animals with a focus on Australian megafauna. They will learn untuned and tuned percussion parts to accompany a dinosaur rap about Megafauna.

Students will participate in Choir each week, where they will explore their vocal abilities, develop ensemble-singing skills, learn new repertoire, and engage in body percussion and movement activities.

PDHPE

Throughout PDHPE in Term 2, Year 1 will learn how safe choices protect their bodies and support the wellbeing of themselves and those around them. Students build knowledge and skills across sun safety, road safety, water safety, and local environmental safety, exploring why protective behav iours matter and how they demonstrate respect for self and others. During practical lessons, students will start ball movement games focusing on passing, throwing, and catching while continuing to develop skills to work as part of a team.

Dear Parents ,

Welcome back to what will be a fast paced yet rewarding term for your child. We hope you have all had a restful holiday and were able to enjoy some quality time with your family and friends.

In Term 2, we look forward to working alongside your child across all Key Learning Areas. Highlights include a deep dive into our new Science unit exploring the magic of the night sky, where students will investigate patterns and wonder about the world bey ond Earth. Our literacy rotations will provide purposeful practice to build confidence and independence in reading, writing and spelling. Students will also engage in a class novel study of George’s Marvellous Medicine, exploring characters, events and themes in preparation for our exciting theatre excursion to see the live production. Our wellbeing focus this term centres on building positive relationships, using the language and strategies of URSTRONG to support students in developing friendship skills, confidence and respectful communication.

Please see below a snapshot of the learning that will take place in all subjects throughout this term. We look forward to working with the KWS community this term as we continue to bring the best out of the learning experience for your child.

YEAR 2 - TERM 2

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

This will occur daily during the morning session. Please pack a separate container or small piece of fresh fruit or vegetable for your child to eat during this time. Keeping this separate to their lunch box really helps with the organisation of our morning routine.

Library day (NB change of day) : Every Wednesday. Please pack a library bag.

PE Day: Continues every Tuesday. Please wear the play -based uniform and joggers on this day.

Drink bottle:

We encourage students to drink water regularly at school. Please ensure they pack their own drink bottle every day.

HOME LEARNING

Like Term 1, Home Learning will continue to be distributed every Monday in a plastic folder to complete throughout the week. Students will be expected to return their Home Learning folder every Friday for marking as well as their home reader.

Across KWS, students are strongly encouraged to participate in Home Learning to support and reinforce their learning. If there are any difficulties completing the tasks, please contact your child’s classroom teacher so we can provide support.

YEAR 2 - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

Year 2 will continue English investigations using the InitiaLit program as our foundation for learning. Key investigations include:

• Constructing and exploring narrative, informative and persuasive texts

• Reading to make meaning by analysing the author’s purpose and using comprehension strategies such as connecting, visualising and inferring

• Developing grammar knowledge with a focus on verbs and adverbs

• Strengthening spelling skills through spelling choices for the sounds /ar/, /er/, /oy/ and common suffixes

• Sharing news and collaborating with peers to build confidence in speaking and listening

SCIENCE

This term in Science, students will explore The Magic of the Night Sky, investigating what we can see in the sky during the day and night and why it changes. Through hands -on investigations, students will learn about the Sun’s movement, how shadows change throughout the day, how we can use shadows to tell the time, and why the Moon appears different across the month. Students will also explore how First Nations Peoples understand and share stories about the sky, and will communicate their learning through models, observations and creative responses.

MATHEMATICS

Students will engage in practical mathematical investigations using concrete materials to support understanding and build confidence across a range of mathematical concepts. These hands -on experiences allow students to consolidate skills and develop flexible problem -solving strategies.

GEOGRAPHY

This term, students will explore the ways people connect to places, with a particular focus on Australia and our local area. Through shared conversations, inquiry activities and hands -on investigations, students will examine how places can hold meaning thr ough culture, history, experiences and the environment. A key emphasis will be developing understanding and respect for local Wiradjuri perspectives, alongside broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, recognising the deep and enduring connections First Nations Peoples have with Country. Students will share their thinking through discussion, mapping activities and creative responses as they build an appreciation of the many ways people value and care for places.

YEAR 2 - TERM 2

VISUAL ARTS

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

In Digital Technology this term, Year 2 will use the Spheros to explore planetary motion. They will learn how to code the Spheros to demonstrate how the Earth orbits the sun and the different phases of the moon. Students will also use the 3D printer to print a sun dial and explore the computer aided design program Tinkercad to design their own sun dial.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Will be learning about how our school values are based in biblical stories. We will read stories from the bible and try to identify the school value we can see in the story. Year one will then get the chance to reflect on where they can demonstrate that va lue at school.

WELLBEING

This term, our Year 2 wellbeing focus is on building positive relationships using the language and strategies of URSTRONG. Students are learning how to recognise healthy friendships and use tools such as the Friend- oMeter to manage small problems respectfully and confidently.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will listen to and sing a range of songs practising known concepts. Songs in this unit will be themed to the sky. Students will learn ‘Morning Star, Evening Star’ and explore the story behind the Aboriginal lullaby is it based one T hey will learn Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in Noongar language and create a simple accompaniment using tap sticks and tuned instruments.

Students will participate in Choir each week, where they will explore their vocal abilities, develop ensemble singing skills, learn new repertoire, and engage in body percussion and movement activities.

PDHPE

In PDH students to develop an understanding of how key body organs – the brain, heart, and lungs contribute to health, movement and overall wellbeing. Through handson, movement -based lessons, students learn the function of these organs and how to care for them t hrough healthy choices.

Students in PE will continue to develop their gross motor skills playing team games, which involve strategy and teamwork

TERM 2 2026

Welcome to Term 2! We hope you have had a wonderful holiday and ready for an exciting term ahead. It has been lovely to welcome students back and hear all about their adventures during the holidays. Reflecting on Term 1, we had a wonderful array of learning opportunities including our friendship day workshop, designing and building our insulated hot chocolate covers, swimming lessons and immersing ourselves into weekly wellbeing lessons. Home Learning

Students are encouraged to tailor home learning to complement their learning goals. Reading regularly is encouraged. The opportunity to read out loud to a household member provides your child with the chance to read with expression and increase fluency. This term, Home Learning will continue to have the same focus areas of Term 1. There will be tasks related to English (spelling, comprehension and reading), Maths (maths mentals and review of content covered in class) and other project -based learning tasks.

YEAR 3 - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

Through a variety of shared reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, students will investigate effective techniques used by authors to engage readers. Analysing these techniques, students will be focus on skills to apply these devices to their own writing.

- They will compose and analyse informative texts . We will deep dive into the world of Antarctica and we will be comparing text types. Students will be developing their own skills in building information reports relative to classroom topics.

- Reading: specific skills and strategies for reading and comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning.

- Spelling: alphabetical order, morphemic word families, spelling rules, word origins and homophones.

- Handwriting: letter formation, relative size, introduction to cursive writing.

SCIENCE

Students will be diving into exploring the concept of the human body. Students will explore how body systems, particularly the skeletal and muscular systems, work together to enable movement in humans and animals. They will learn to distinguish between vertebrates and invertebrates and compare how these animals move in different environments.

VISUAL ARTS- MRS HOLMES

In Visual Arts this term Year Three will be exploring a unit based on still life representations. They will be creating a series of artworks using a variety of media including charcoal, pastel, paint and ink. Reflecting on still life works by Van Gogh, Gra ce Cossington Smith and Pablo Picasso will further develop their understanding of the many ways objects can be represented, especially through three dimensions.

MATHEMATICS

Your child will be working through hands on learning activities around the syllabus strands of Data, Representing Numbers using Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Geometric Measure (Length), Area and Multiplication and Division.

Students will use efficient mental and written strategies with increasing fluency to solve problems. They will use appropriate terminology to describe and link mathematical ideas, check statements for accuracy and explain their reasoning. Students will work mathematically with: - whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, 2D space, length and data. They will be exploring the use of technology to investigate mathematical concepts and check their solutions.

HSIE

T his term, students will complete a study of identity and diversity in both a local and broader context. Moving from the heritage of their local area, students explore the historical features and diversity of their community. Students explain how and why there has been change and continuity in communities and daily life. They identify traces of the past in the present and can explain their significance within the Central West region. We will complete a study of the exploration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.

P ERFORMING ARTS- MRS SINCLAIR

In Music, students will build upon prior knowledge by listening to and singing a variety of folk songs and chants recognising and identifying rhythmic and melodic symbols. They will engage in partner and circle dances, rhythm, body percussion and movement activities.

I n Choir, students will broaden their vocal range, explore singing in parts, expand their choral repertoire and participate in body percussion and movement activities.

YEAR 3 - TERM 2

WELLBEING

In Term 2, students explore the Wellbeing pillar of Relationships. Following our Friendship workshop at the end of term 1, students will put their skills into practice. Students are encouraged to explore their roles and responsibilities within these interactions both in person and online. Students will develop an appreciation for diversity and accept all cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. Students will be encouraged to develop effective strategies and behaviours that will empower them to manage authentic relationships and establish personal boundaries.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

In Term 2 , We are breaking down what happens in a chapel service. We will look at why we sing, what is a prayer, why do we have readings, and why things are set out the way they are. This will help our students when they help to lead our services. Our classes will be inclusive and exploratory , with the hope that each child feels comfortable asking questions and exploring what it is to be at a U niting C hurch school.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

In Digital Technology this term Year 3 will create a multimodal report on a local historical building. They will develop their movie-making skills by using iMovie and learn to insert footage, images, title slides, audio recordings and soundtracks.

PDHPE

During PE students will explore a range of striking games to develop a range of new skills. Throughout these games students will develop teamwork. communicaition and problem -solving skills.

Students will discover factors that influence personal identity, who they are, what they believe and activities they enjoy. Alongside this we will continue to explore ways to be inclusive and respectful.

LIBRARY

This term, students will develop their research skills and will explore a simple search process. Other key events will be addressed such as ANZAC Day, Mothers’ Day, National Simultaneous Story Time and Reconciliation Week. Borrowing of resources is included in each library lesson.

TERM 2 2026

Dear Parents ,

Welcome back to Term 2. We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday and are returning feeling refreshed and ready for a busy and rewarding term ahead. Throughout Term 2, our focus will be on providing rich, engaging and meaningful learning experiences, both within the classroom and through connections with the wider school community. We aim to continue building curiosity, independence and confidence in all learners.

We will continue to encourage students to actively demonstrate our school values of Respect, Inclusiveness, Courage, Commitment and Resilience in their daily actions. These values remain central to fostering a positive, supportive and inclusive classroom environment where every student feels safe, valued and motivated to learn.

Building on the strong foundations established in Term 1, students will extend their learning across all key areas. We were particularly proud of the way students embraced challenges last term, showing persistence and a willingness to take on more complex tasks. This term, we will continue to support each student to take ownership of their learning, set goals and strive for personal growth.

A highlight of the term will be the upcoming Athletics Carnival, where students will have the opportunity to demonstrate teamwork, sportsmanship and perseverance. This event provides a wonderful extension of our PDH learning, encouraging active participation and a healthy, positive attitude towards physical activity. We are looking forward to a term filled with exciting opportunities, continued growth and many successes for all students.

YEAR 4 - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

We continue daily fluency sessions that support students in strengthening their reading and comprehension skills through engagement with a variety of meaningful texts, while handwriting sessions will focus on progressing towards the ‘NSW Foundation Cursive’ style, including weekly lessons on correct pencil grip, posture and composition. In addition, three spelling lessons each week will continue to build students’ understanding of spelling rules and patterns.

Students will study persuasive devices through an indepth analysis of the text ‘ Ned Kelly and the Green Sash’. These devices will be implement ed by creating a persuasive speech on ‘How to make KWS more sustainable’. This will integrate with Geography focusing on sustainability issues within the school.

Students will also study poetry through an in-depth analysis of ‘ Bindi’ and ‘Fire’. Through this unit, they will learn figurative language techniques and use them to create, publish and perform their own poems.

SCIENCE

Students will explore how natural forces shape Earth’s surface, from the impact of wind, water, and living organisms on weathering rocks to dramatic changes caused by earthquakes and volcanoes. They will investigate Earth’s internal structure and observe how moving water contributes to erosion. Through Aboriginal Dreaming and Torres Strait Islander Legends, students will also gain cultural insights into landscape formation.

MATHEMATICS

This term students start APSMO problem solving lessons each week and engage in a range of hands -on learning activities starting with length and. Daily revision will be an important part of each lesson, helping students strengthen number sense, recall and essential mathematical skills across all areas of the syllabus. A strong emphasis will be placed on verbal reasoning and mathematical justification, encouraging students to explain how they arrived at an answer rather than focusing solely on correctness. Problem -solving will also be a key focus, supporting students to apply their knowledge confidently and think critically in a range of mathematical contexts.

Our focus this term in Geography is on the role each individual plays in leading a sustainable life. We will look at the local school community and, linking to the Science task, encourage students to create a sustainable solution to composting. Students will also visit the Orange Resource Recovery Centre to learn firsthand what our community does with their waste.

YEAR 4 - TERM 2

VISUAL ARTS

Year 4 will be exploring art from different cultures this term. Starting with Rangoli Art, a deep dive into this traditional art form will see students better understand this practice. Inspired by this practice, they will create their own artworks using ra dial symmetry. Moving onto contemporary First Nations’ Artist Ray Mudjanji and students will create their own inspired Superhero comic strips.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will study instruments of the orchestra. They will listen to and describe the tone quality of each family of instruments as well as analysing the way instruments create their sound. Students will also research junk percussion orchestras and invest igate ways of creating their own junk percussion using recycled items found at home and school. This will support work they will be undertaking in Geography. I n Choir, students will broaden their vocal range, explore singing in parts, expand their choral repertoire and participate in body percussion and movement activities .

PDHPE

Students in PE will continue to participate in a range of team games, with a focus on how to overcome challenges through teamwork, problem solving skills, and perseverance. Students will Identify and engage in games /sport from around the world and describe how participation can bring people together

The Year 5 teaching team is delighted to welcome families back for Term 2. As a cohort, we remain committed to cultivating a culture of learning in which students are encouraged to think creatively, engage purposefully and pursue excellence across all aspects of school life.

Through the consistent demonstration of respect, integrity and responsibility, students will continue to develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of personal achievement. We uphold high expectations for all learners and value the collaborative partnerships between students, staff and families that underpin a successful and supportive learning environment.

Active participation within the classroom and the broader school community remains a central focus of our Year 5 program, as we recognise the important role engagement plays in fostering both academic growth and personal development.

We are excited for the breadth of learning opportunities and experiences planned throughout the term, each designed to enrich student learning, strengthen peer relationships and further develop a cohesive and positive classroom culture.

Adding to the enthusiasm for the months ahead, excitement has already begun to build for the Year 5/6 production of The Wrong Way Round, which will be performed at the end of Term 3. Students are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to be involved in this significant co-curricular experience, and we look forward to seeing their talents and confidence flourish throughout the preparation pr ocess.

In Year 5, we place a deliberate emphasis on the development of character, responsibility and a genuine spirit of service. YEAR 5 - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

We will be reading the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio as an entry point to a broader exploration of social justice, looking at how authors use characterisation and pointof -view to evoke emotions. The empathy experienced by students for the protagonist, August will be the foundations for discussions about other aspects and types of social justice. Throughout this unit we introduce the purpose, genre and delve into persuasive writing. Students identify and explore the language features of persuasive texts by engaging in proofreading and editing skills to independently write a persuasive text, using appropriate text structure, language, and features. Students will also look at Solli Raphaels’ text ‘Spotlight’. Students will look at his work, learn conventions of poetry and will become inspired to develop their own poems.

SCIENCE

This term in Science, students will explore the vastness and complexity of space, developing their understanding of key astronomical features including stars, galaxies, nebulae, and black holes. They will also investigate the technologies and scientific advancements that have enabled humans to observe, study and explore the universe, deepening their appreciation of humanity’s ongoing quest to understand the cosmos.

MATHEMATICS

In Maths this term we will focus on:

• Multiplication and division

• Fractions and decimals

• Representing Numbers

• 3D Spatial Structure

Whilst learning about these concepts we will not only cover specific strategies and skills, but students will also apply their knowledge through real-world problemsolving investigations.

HSIE

This unit looks at events that affected the colonies. It examines frontier conflict and the internal exploration of Australia. This unit helps students to develop an understanding of when and why the other Australian colonies were established and how new places were found.

YEAR 5 - TERM 2

VISUAL ARTS

Students will be introduced to the artmaking practice of textile art. Through this introduction they will create their own ‘felt friend’, an animal, plant or fish. They will be given a design brief and need to design within its parameters. Students will develop their fine motor skills through pattern cutting, felt cutting and sewing. They will also learn to follow their plans and sketches to create a final object. Colour theory will be introduced with a particular focus on complimentary colours. This forms part of the study of one of the elements of design.

WELLBEING

Students will take part in weekly lessons based on the URStrong program, aimed at teaching conflict resolution, problem solving, positive communication skills at an age-appropriate level. Students will also use the Grow Your Mind and the Smiling Minds program to develop self -awareness and mindfulness.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

This term year 5 will explore what is a sacrament. We specifically look at Weddings, Baptism and Communion. We look at biblical accounts of each of these and finish the term with a recreation of the sacrament the class most wants to see.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will create and perform a simple melodic ostinato with a familiar song and learn and perform a cup-pattern routine in small groups . They will demonstrate their learning through an individual performance using lyrics, solfa, time names and a self -selected rhythmic pattern.

Students will participate in Choir each week, where they will develop their vocal range and ensemble singing skills, expand their choral repertoire and engage in body percussion and movement activities.

PDHPE

During PE, students will explore specific offensive and defensive games. These games will develop gross -motor skills, catching, striking and throwing.

During term 2 students will explore positive decision making, who influences decisions and evaluates the consequences of choices they make.

LIBRARY

Students will complete an inclusion awareness program during Library this term. They will also develop their questioning and thinking skills as they engage with a walking, talking encyclopedia on everything to do with Space! Key events will be addressed s uch as Mothers’ Day, National Simultaneous Story Time and Reconciliation Week. Borrowing of resources is included in each library lesson.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

In Digital Technology the students will develop coding skills using Spheros and recreate the Solar System in groups using multiple spheros. In the second half of the term they will examine the International Space Station then using Minecraft Education each student design and create a module that could be added to the ISS.

Dear Year 6 Families,

Welcome back to Term 2!

We hope the holidays were filled with rest, fun and special moments with family and friends. As a team, we are thrilled to be continuing the Year 6 journey together and are looking forward to another exciting and rewarding term.

This term holds many wonderful learning experiences, with one of the highlights being our much-anticipated excursion to Canberra ( Week 9, 17 – 19 June) This academic excursion offers a fantastic opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of Australian history and government, as well as strengthen friendships and independence in a fun and engaging way.

Year 6 continues to be a time for students to grow as leaders of our Junior School. Whether they are leading in a formal role or through their everyday actions, we encourage each student to set a positive example through their attitude, effort and respect for people and place A focus of our Year 6 Leadership this term is taking pride in our uniform presentation and the care of our school environment, modelling to younger students at Kinross what it means to be tidy , respectful and proud of our magnificent community.

OUR GRADE GOALS FOR TERM 2

• Develop deeper critical thinking and comprehension skills by analysing a range of texts, including historical and contemporary genres, with a focus on identifying themes, perspectives and author intent

YEAR 6 - TERM 2

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

Weeks 1 – 4: Students will investigate how significant historical events can be represented across different genres and explore a range of texts focusing on the Wave Hill Walk-Off led by Vincent Lingiari. Students will create their own hybrid text about a notable Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander figure.

Weeks 5 -10 : Students will gain a deeper understanding of the textual concepts of ‘characterisation’ and ‘narrative’. Through the text Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief , students will explore the development of characters as depicted through their appearance, words, thoughts and actions, creating imaginative and informative texts, drawing on their knowledge of characterisation.

SCIENCE

In this semester long unit, students will continue to consider and consolidate the nature of human body systems, with a particular focus on the similarities and differences between body systems. They will begin by reviewing the structure and function of the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems, examining how these systems work individually and together.

Through Senior School Science Laboratory lessons, s tudents will design and conduct several fair tests, analys e their data and draw conclusions.

VISUAL ARTS

‘10 Ways of Thinking Through Drawing’ is a unit of work exploring the works of William Kentridge. Crossing over with learning in HSIE, students will look at the ways that migration has affected the creation of art throughout modern history and the representation of these migrant stories.

Drawing with different implements, experimenting with shadows and highlights as well as collage works will be created.

MATHEMATICS

During mathematical studies, students will continue to build their mathematical fluency and understanding of the following concepts:

This term, students will explore self -awareness, personal strengths, and emotional wellbeing. They will learn strategies for self -care, managing change and building resilience. Students will also challenge stereotypes, practice gratitude and self -compassion, and reflect on their learning to set future goals.

PDHPE

Students in PE will collaborate to create physically active games, incorporating rules and scoring systems that are fair and inclusive. Students will plan, advertise and implement their games throughout the term.

In PDH, s tudents will examine a variety of scenarios to identify factors that help them recognise when action is needed to protect their own safety or the safety of others. They will research and identify trusted people, places and sources of information they can turn to for support or assistance. Students will also develop and rehearse practical action plans they can apply in different situations where they may face risk.
