NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents I was pleased to welcome the boys back for the start of the summer term with some long-awaited sunshine and warmth!

In my start of term assembly, I reminded the boys of our core values and challenged each individual to set their goals for the term ahead. There are just fifty full school days until we break up for the summer holiday and in the words of the great Muhammad Ali, it is important to make them all count!

Golfing Success

During the Easter holidays a few staff members took part in the inaugural â€˜Marler Invitationalâ€™ golf tournament.

After 18 holes and some brilliant scrambling golf from Mr Clarke and Mr Cowie the KHS team emerged victorious.

A great day was had by all and we look forward to defending the title next year. Mr Russell

Over the May half term a number of us are going out to visit the school and meet the villagers and we would like to ask if anyone can donate a few items for us to take over. High on their list is waterproof clothing such as mackintoshes, anoraks and cagoules, as it rains hard for six months of the year. Mainly for adults (teachers) please but children's would also be appreciated. They are also keen for some small musical instruments and any easily transportable teaching aids. EARTH DAY Earth Day was on the 22nd April 2018. In order to recognise this important day, 6M learnt more about it during their English comprehension lesson. They learnt that Earth Day is celebrated in 190 countries around the world and that this year's theme is 'End plastic pollution'. Did you know that there is 6.3 billions tonnes of plastic waste on Earth? Having all seen Blue Planet 2, 6M felt very strongly about wanting to get this important message across to our school. They each made a poster explaining how we can make a difference to ending plastic pollution. Look out for these posters for tips and the key '3 Rs'. Re-use, Recycle, Reduce. Well done, boys. IN CLASS WITH RECEPTION AND YEAR 1 In cooking, the boys in Reception and Year 1 learnt to make a sandwich. They chose their own filling jam, cheese or Marmite. There were some interesting combinations. The boys learnt about whole, halves and quarters of their sandwiches. They were brilliant! Mrs Marskell

During the Easter holidays the boys in 7C made some fantastic model cars in preparation for our trip to the Brookland's Museum. The boys also did some brilliant scale drawings to accompany their models. Well done, boys! Mr Russell

6M Maths group made the most of the glorious weather at the end of last week and went outside for a practical lesson. They are currently learning about measuring and estimation. They thoroughly enjoyed measuring various objects outside, including some of the current building fences. One group estimated the length of the tree by measuring its shadow. It was lovely to see them learning so enthusiastically. Miss G McSweeney

On May 12th Year 6 have organised to do a fun run in aid of the Lungi Sierra Leone Charity. This is a great chance for us to work together and raise some money for a fantastic cause. We have an aim of ÂŁ500 and are currently working on the development of a fundraising page. Stay tuned for more updates in the next few weeks! Jensen A - 6R

Funny Bones Reception had a great time in Drama acting out the Funny Bones book. They were all great skeletons.

Squash Success

Mrs Roberts Hadi Y, 6R, was Runner-Up in the Ebbisham Sports Club, Epsom ,in the Neil Desai Tournament. Hadi won 3 matches and a Seminal to get into the Final.

Afternoon Break â€Ś always entertaining and always varied

Lungi Sierra Leone For a number of years now the school have supported the Lungi Sierra Leone charity. This charity is run by a local couple with help from friends both in the UK and in Sierra Leone. Over the years they have built a primary and secondary school in a small village near Freetown and set up a motorbike ambulance service. More recently they set up a diagnostic laboratory, a blood bank and are now starting on a new pre-school. Their aim is to advance education and training, relieve poverty and distress, and promote health within the Tintafor, Kamasondo, Benkeh district of Lungi. At half term, a number of us are going out to visit the school and meet the villagers and we would like to ask if anyone can donate a few items for us to take over. SHOW AND TELL Once a week the Reception boys bring in a toy for Show and Tell. It gives them an opportunity to talk about the toys they have bought in. Sometimes they need encouragement to talk about their toys. I will then ask who, what, why and how questions. The other boys have the opportunity to ask questions about the toy too. Mrs Marskell

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION The annual House Public Speaking competition took place this week. All the finalists spoke with great clarity and confidence, whether it was Prose, Poetry or their own speech, based on the title â€˜Oh, to be in Englandâ€™. Talking to an invited audience and the judges, Miss McSweeney and Mr Brooks, the category winners were announced as Years 3 & 4: Harry L, Years 5 & 6: Raf D and Years 7-10: Harri G. Congratulations to all who took part.

6M Science - the Digestive System

6M have been learning about the digestive system. On Thursday they did a practical lesson to see how it worked in action! Firstly, they chewed bread for one minute to see how saliva works. Then, they carried out an investigation to see what happens to food inside our stomachs. We added coke and bread to a bag and imitated the stomach muscles by squeezing the bag. The boys observed the changes and recorded their findings. We had a lot of fun! Miss McSweeney

SENIOR HOUSE RUGBY

We had a fantastic afternoon of rugby, with all boys in Years 7 and 8 playing in a team. The A team competition was very close, Drake and Nelson drew after the tournament rounds. NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents I should like to thank you, as well as the boys, for your support during this weekâ€™s regulatory ISI inspection. Furthermore, I am gladdened by the commitment shown by my fantastic team of teaching and support staff. I am grateful to them all for their untiring efforts over a busy couple of days. Whilst I am not allowed to share the results of the inspection with you until the official report is unveiled, suffice to say that I will be enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend! Although the report will be entirely prosaic and factual in nature, the inspectors made some very kind comments about our boys and the ethos of the school on an informal basis. We will send out a copy of the official report as soon as it is published by the Independent Schoolsâ€™ Inspectorate, which is likely to be a matter of weeks, but before the end of term. LUNGI SIERRA LEONE CHARITY On Wednesday, we delivered our class assembly. We talked to the school about our planned Fun Run and the Lungi Sierra Leone charity that we are supporting. MAKING OF MODERN BRITAIN TOUR - PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS DAY 1 TO DAY 4. Full report next week.

Wellington House Day, which took place on Friday 27th April, lived up to its name as wellies were certainly needed during the rainy afternoon! Despite the unpleasant weather, the Wellington boys did a fantastic job of setting up a wide range of exciting stalls, from Nerf gun shooting to sales of fruit kebabs! The boys raised nearly ÂŁ500 which will be split equally between our two new charities, the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher and the Children's Trust in Tadworth. A special mention to Jack Fernandez and Frankie Larter who nominated these charities at our last House Meeting and spoke so well about their fantastic work. Here's hoping for sunshine next year! In Science this week, the boys have been learning about seeds and have planted a sunflower seed. We are going to record its growth stage by stage.

May the Force be with you 6M have begun their new Science topic 'Forces'. To kick start their learning, they have learnt about Newton metres and how to measure using a force meter. They enjoyed choosing a variety of different objects around the classroom to measure, including their own chairs! We all look forward to more practical lessons later on in the half term. NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents I was proud to be in my first Kingswood House school photograph on Wednesday the weather was conducive, the boys looked smart and nobody fainted! It was gratifying to see a busy Open Morning on Thursday and we anticipate a similar showing on Saturday. I am looking forward to seeing the boys in Years 7-10 be great ambassadors for the school and ask that they report to Mr Mitchell upon arrival at 9.00am, please. A reminder that we have two excellent seminars for parents during our “Well-being Week” in June. Please make a note of the dates: 12th June for E-Safety with David Blake and 14th June for Mental Health & Well-being with Dick Moore. Both speakers are experts in their field and will be conducting group sessions with the boys, as well as staff, so it would be good to see plenty of parents support these events. You are also warmly invited to visit the Art Exhibition in Langlands which will display pupils’ work from Thursday 17th May until Tuesday 22nd May. Having had a preview, I can assure you that there are some wonderful examples of creativity and talent!

Year 6 Geography 6R have been working extremely hard on their Geography Crossrail projects over the past couple of weeks. Some boys have even spent lunchtimes and time out of school to produce their work - and it certainly showed. I was very impressed with what was presented in our lesson this week. The boys showed excellent subject knowledge and just how creative they can be! I have awarded all the boys a commendation for their efforts as it has been fantastic to see how enthusiastic they have been with their learning. A special â€˜Well Done' to Joseph S and Will M for their outstanding work and miniature model of the Crossrail which is displayed in my classroom. Miss G McSweeney

HOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION 2018 Many congratulations to all the boys who represented their houses in the finals of the Music Competition this week. They are all very talented performers and the competition was fierce. We are very grateful to Mr and Mrs Shelley who adjudicated the competition with a helpful narrative and used their many years of experience to advise and inspire the boys in equal measure. Reception boys enjoyed their Music and Drama lessons ‘al fresco’ this week. One of their activities was to sing in time to the parachute being thrown into the air. They were very enthusiastic and energetic as they did so! Mrs Marskell

Ben I, 9H, has been assisting the boys in Year 2 with their assembly preparation. They are working together to produce a ‘West End musical’ theme; the Year 2 boys writing the lyrics and Ben supporting with original music using his iPad app. It is proving to be a very harmonious working relationship! Ted R, 6M, was featured in the Daily Mail after a fantastic trip with Paddington on the Belmont train, enjoying afternoon tea and story time!

In their maths lesson the boys in Reception and Year 1 were learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We decided to walk around the school to see if we could find any different shapes. They were all brilliant in spotting shapes in all sorts of places. Mrs Marskell

NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents

This week, the Year 8 boys started the first of their preliminary Common Entrance exams in French and mathematics. We wish them well and trust that their hard work will pay dividends. Boys in many other year groups will sit summer assessments after half term and my advice is to prepare for them early, pay attention to getting enough rest and keep to a healthy diet. Some sensible revision over half term is advisable but do not overdo it – it is important to return to school feeling refreshed. In the tests, simply try your hardest and do not give up. No one can ever ask more of you than to give of your best and if you finish the week knowing that you have done so, then you will have achieved an important goal in itself.

Next week, we are looking forward to our Sports Day and hope that the sun will be shining! This is a traditional annual fixture in the Kingswood House calendar and one where I trust good sportsmanship will be as equally evident as athletic prowess. Please bear in mind that the event takes place off-site at The Harrier Centre, Ewell, with a prompt start time of 9.00am and half term commences immediately afterwards at 12.30pm – so all equipment needed over the holiday should be retrieved on Thursday afternoon. ‘Test’-ing morning During their morning PE lesson, Reception, Year 1 and 2 boys had a surprise guest. Can you guess who the wicket keeper and fast bowler was? The boys had an amazing lesson. Lots of shouting: ‘he's out’ , ‘run’ and ‘catch the ball’. Mrs Marskell

The Brooks Building construction began in earnest this week—the diggers arrived! Greeted with great cheers and of huge interest to all the boys, staff included !

Year 3 London Wetlands Centre Trip Year 3 had an exciting day at the London Wetlands Centre. The boys enjoyed a workshop about plant classification, learning to identity them by their leaves. We also went on a habitat trail and bird spotting! Miss S McSweeney

Year 4 had a fantastic and energetic day out at Painshill Park last Friday!

During the morning, we learnt all about Greek mythology; we found our way around the Minotaur's labyrinth wearing blindfolds; became a fierce dragon to chase Jason and the Argonauts; rescued Persephone from the underworld and even became stray cows hiding in the woods from Heracles! The afternoon was spent exploring the woodland and carrying out a mini beast hunt and we finished our day with a trip to the beautiful grotto, decorated with hundreds of crystals. The boys had a wonderful day exploring the grounds and learning from our enthusiastic guide, Adam. It was a successful day and was voted, 'the best school trip ever' by a number of the boys! Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Butser Hill on Thursday 17th May; the weather was stunning and staff and pupils enjoyed every aspect of the day. Boys learned all about the Romans, Celts and Vikings. In fact Butser farm makes the learning experience very real and we all feel like we have seen what it was like to live during those times. Thank you to Mrs Seiver for organizing the trip! Mr Clarke

Our Art Exhibition is now on! A range of variety Artworks and Photographs produced by our pupils is being shown in Langlands Hall. The exhibition will provide you with unforgettable artistic experiences. The Art Exhibition will be on display until Tuesday. Mrs Maciejewska & Mr Bailey

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 visited Penhurst Place, they had a tour of the beautiful house and gardens and learnt how knights dressed for battle. Miss Walliss

Oscar Romero 6M have been studying Oscar Romero. He was the Archbishop of El Salvador who was assassinated in 1980 while celebrating Mass. Romero was increasingly outspoken about injustice by the corrupt military and government in the events leading up to his assassination. The boys coloured in Oscar Romero crosses. Mrs Weston This term, Year 2 have been learning about castles, and have all made their own castles. The castles have been entered into the House Art Competition. Miss Walliss

MOCKTAILS 6M Maths group have been learning about capacity. To finish the topic, the boys designed their own mocktails and today they made them! We had a range of different mocktails from 'Mango Dream' and 'Tropical Fizz'! The boys bought in some of their own ingredients, Mrs Long kindly bought in her smoothie maker and I provided a range of juices to choose from and tropical umbrellas to finish them off! They measured out different amounts of liquids, depending on their recipes. I was able to try all of the drinks and they were delicious! We enjoyed drinking them outside in the sunshine. On Saturday, during Open Morning, the boys in Year 6 ran 5km in aid of the Lungi Sierra Leone Charity.

A massive ‘thank you’ must go to the boys and their parents who gave up their own time to take part. After the run we had a very successful cake sale and the total donations for the day exceeded £210!! A special mention must go to Edward Baker and Ted Reece who both won best dressed, Liam Wade for running with a broken arm and Jenson Anderson who won the overall race (despite Mr. Russell's best efforts!) If anyone else would like to donate then please give your donations to the school office. Thank you!! Mr Russell, Miss McSweeney and Year 6.

NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents You will by now have received a copy of the ISI Inspection Report and I would like to reiterate how pleased we are that the School was found to be fully compliant. This is a significant achievement and I am proud of the staff team for their work in this respect. I would also like to thank Barney Cowie for arranging a fantastic Sports Day; it was a lovely occasion and I was really impressed by the efforts and sportsmanship of all the boys. It was a fitting way to round off a busy first half of the term. In staffing news, I am pleased to announce the promotion of Amanda Black to become Head of Science in September to replace Sue Callaghan. Since her arrival in January, Amanda has proved to be a fine teacher and fully deserves this opportunity, having been selected on merit ahead of other strong candidates – and the fact that she is here already means that there will be a seamless transition. A recruitment process is currently underway to secure an additional science teacher given this internal appointment. I am also delighted to confirm that Harriet Wilson will join us as the Senior SENCo in the autumn term. She is a qualified teacher and currently works for the local authority within the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Department as a senior co-ordinator. Tina O’Regan will continue to work at the School on an occasional basis until the end of the spring term in order to ensure a complete handover. As a replacement for Gemma Lindley, who will be on maternity leave next term, I am delighted to have secured the services of Sachin Sukhdeo. He is currently Head of Mathematics, and on the Senior Leadership Team, at Greenfield School in Woking and was formerly at The Hawthorns School in Bletchingley; he will bring great expertise, having taught the subject up to GCSE, as well as practical experience, to the mathematics department. Additionally, Phillipa Watkins has expressed a wish to step back from her part-time role as Head of Music with the possibility that she may take on a new position to manage the School production and teach Drama. I have already appointed an outstanding full-time Director of Music who will oversee provision across the whole School, and establish it as a GCSE option in the future, but I regret that I cannot yet formally announce his appointment for contractual reasons. Finally, Sarah Dean will be leaving at the end of term with our best wishes; she has been a wonderful teacher for the boys in Year 3 and I am pleased that she will stay in touch as a supply teacher, as well as to assist with trips, as and when needed next year. I am very satisfied with the calibre of our appointments to date and will write with more news in due course. It is worth noting that the School’s investment for the future is significant. It is not merely limited to the new building, a new Design & Technology studio or several other major associated works which will take place over the summer – it is also evident in our expansion of staffing, which will see a new full-time Head of Art, a separate Head of Design & Technology, a new full-time Director of Music and potentially a new position for the teaching of Drama. These are exciting times, for sure, and all the boys will benefit enormously from the additional facilities and personnel. A reminder that Prize Giving will take place on Thursday 5 July at Epsom College. I am looking forward to celebrating the various successes and highlights of our School year at this prestigious event together with our guest, Mr Guy Holloway, who is the Headmaster at Hampton Court House. We will write with further information nearer the time but please ensure you have the date in your diaries. I am introducing a new citizenship prize this year, which will be awarded to a boy in each class, whom we feel has really understood and personified the values of the Kingswood House community. 6M have been learning about air resistance and made their own parachutes to test the effects of air resistance on moving objects. Miss G McSweeney

Reception and Year 1 boys visited the art exhibition and were very interested in all the displays. They then went into the Camera Obscura. The boys discovered it was a box with a tiny hole in the side of it - they crawled into the box and closed the door. It was very dark inside. The boys held a piece of paper up to the hole and were surprised to see a picture of boys playing basketball - but it was upside down. The boys thought this was brilliant, ‘very cool’ they all said.

The first fixtures of the season for both the Colts and Senior Years took place last week. Teams from the 1st XI to the Colts B played Tower House, taking 2 wins out of 5. The games were all close, and very competitive ,with some great individual performances. Hadi Yousaf batted well for the Colts A’s with 25*, and Sam Slaney batted well for the 1st XI and was unlucky to get out.

The U9’s enjoyed a great afternoon at Ewell Castle in the sunshine, with the A team winning by 3 runs, and the B team losing by 2 runs. Some fantastic performances from both teams, the pick

of the players being Jasper Wong and Tahil Rana for the B team, with Noah Seager, Jayden Eddy and George Harvey performing well for the A team.

The boys in Reception have been learning about mini beasts in their French lesson. We read a story about a caterpillar which turns into a beautiful butterfly. Mr Brooks at HQ! Mr Murphy was invited to the Houses of Parliament as a guest of our local MP, Chris Grayling, and asked Mr Brooks to accompany him. They chose a fabulous evening to enjoy the outdoor reception.

Mr Brooks recently played at Twickenham for the Darwin Construction team vs The Houses of Lords and Commons. It was his first outing at the home of rugby during his 50 year career! Congratulations, Mr Brooks. P.S. Heâ€™s on the wing ... Through the Lions Club, our old nursery books have been redeployed to a school in Tanzania. I offer you a warm welcome back for what promises to be an eventful second half of term. As you will see, the new “Peter Brooks Building” is beginning to take shape and I am assured all is on schedule for completion by September. We are proud to host our inaugural “Well-Being Week” at Kingswood House from Monday 11 to Friday 15 June. This will become an annual occurrence and highlights our commitment to safeguarding the boys’ physical, emotional and mental health. This topic correlates with my latest Headmaster’s Blog entitled “The Pursuit of Happiness”, the full version of which is available on the school website, and a significant extract is showcased below: “One of the most important ways to achieve happiness is to engage with other people – fundamentally, to try and work towards their happiness; because, if we do that, we are likely to find happiness ourselves. It is obvious enough that happiness is not found in material possessions – you only have to look at the abysmal tales of woe that have afflicted National Lottery winners over the years - but it certainly can be found in the development of interpersonal relationships and the emotional investment of caring for others. If you set out in pursuit of happiness for its own sake then you are unlikely to find it – but you will certainly find it in everyday life if you are intent on giving happiness to others. There is an old Chinese proverb to this effect, popularised by the American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, which uses a metaphor to compare the pursuit of happiness to chasing a butterfly - ”the more you try to catch it the more elusive it will become; but if you just get on with ordinary things as part of your day to day life, it will come and land on your shoulder.” I very much hope to see many of you join us for the two parental workshops on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, details of which are below. Year 3 have been learning about Judaism. This week they learnt about a special item called a 'mezuzah'. This can be found on the doorways of many Jewish homes. It is a small box and contains a special Hebrew poem inside. The boys made their own 'mezuzah's' and placed their own special messages inside. They decorated them beautifully. Well done, boys! In Class with Reception and Year 1

In maths, the boys are learning about using money to buy goodies from our shop. Each of the boys were asked to bring in a toy to sell and we had really yummy goodies to buy (and eat later!). They bought an item and the shopkeeper had to give the right change. Everyone took a turn at being the shopkeeper. They all had lots of fun! Mrs Marskell

The Gifted, Talented and Interested group recently visited the Houses Of Parliament and had a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster.

KIDS CAN COOK Kids can Cook have been back at school this weekâ€”in their mobile kitchen! All the boys have enjoyed learning new skills. Year 8 boys will cook for our Governors on Monday and then serve the mealâ€”and clear away afterwards! Many thanks to Serena and her team.

Sports Report The 1st XI, enjoyed a fantastic afternoon over at Box Hill in the sunshine. Kingswood House lost the toss and were put into bat, which was perhaps a mistake from Box Hill. Ayaan and Sam Slaney opened the batting and started to score runs very quickly after the first few overs. Sam batted tremendously for 16 overs and continued to impress with his maturity when he knew he was approaching his century. He hit a lovely straight drive for four to reach his total score of 103*, a tremendous achievement for him. We congratulate him on this achievement and hope for many more in the future. KHS ended with a huge score of 218 from 20 overs, meaning that Box Hill would need nearly 11 an over to reach our target. Ollie Taylor also contributed to the runs, with well over 25 runs. We bowled very well, with Matty Hill taking 3 wickets and Conrad Burton being very reliable at Wicket Keeper. We won the game by over 75 runs. The 2nd XI also played Box Hill, and batted and bowled really well. Josh Johns deserves particular mention for his batting form in the last two games, being able to score runs quickly when he is at the crease. The 2nd XI also won their game. The Colts teams took on Chinthurst, who have some very strong cricketers playing for Surrey. The A team played a competitive side but came up short with runs as they took the field in the second innings. Connor Edwards batted particularly well towards the end of the innings and bowled tight overs. The B team played their first ever hard ball game, which was a learning curve for all involved. The C team travelled to Tadworth CC and played a great game. Toby Wardle played particularly well whilst bowling straight for his overs. Well done to all Colts teams for sticking together and staying motivated throughout their games. Sports Day

The Peter Brooks Building is rapidly taking shape.

The large crane has brought in the steel girders and walls after the cement was poured over half term. This week we have seen the building grow at an incredible speed!

Lungi Sierra Leone Mrs Witts led a small group from Kingswood House to visit our charity, Lungi Sierra Leone, over half term. Also on the visit were Miss McSweeney, Mrs Chandler, Mr Russell and two Mr Brooks! Mr Peter Brooks and his son James. The had a very interesting time, visiting the school we support , where Mr Russell, Mr Brooks and Miss McSweeney taught 3 senior classes for one afternoon. Mr Russell was also persuaded to referee a football match against a neighbouring village schoolâ€”unfortunately we lost! They also helped set up the diagnostic medical facility and decorated the Pre-Prep classrooms with various teaching aids. Mrs Witts would like to thank everyone for their generosity as we were able to donate ÂŁ550 to the charity.

NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents We have enjoyed a very fulfilling “Well-Being” week and I thank those of you who attended the parents’ seminars on Tuesday and Thursday. On a related note, I congratulate Form 5S for their outstanding assembly, inspired by the book “Wonder”, which captured our core values and gave us a welcome insight into their aspirations for the future. Further to information gleaned during our recent workshop on e-safety and our ISI inspection feedback, I am reviewing the current policy of allowing Senior boys (Y9-11) access to their mobile telephones during the course of the school day. Please note that this will not affect existing permission to use a mobile telephone during travel to or from school. After consultation with staff and governors, as well as the boys themselves, a decision will be made in time for the start of the new academic year. If any parents feel strongly one way or the other, please email me via Mrs Harding with your thoughts before the end of next week. Congratulations to our Year 8 boys who have achieved commendable results in their recent Common Entrance exams to a number of schools including RGS Guildford, Reigate Grammar, Box Hill, Ewell Castle and Seaford College - as well as our own Senior Years. I wish all the boys well who have assessments next week and trust that Years 7 & 8, who are about to embark on trips to France and Wales respectively, will have a wonderful time. There was a resounding 9 wicket win for our cricket team this week. We won the match against Belmont School at the picturesque Holmbury CC. Congratulations to the 1st XI, and coach, Mr Cowie!

WELL-BEING WEEK Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed indulging in mindfulness this week. We had some good discussions about how to live in the moment, rather than worrying about past events or things that may happen in the future. We then practiced deep breathing. The boys found this skill quite challenging at the beginning but after some practice, all agreed that it relaxed them and bought them back to the present moment. Here are some photos of them enjoying a mindful podcast which allowed them to take time to relax and breathe deeply. I hope they use these skills to help them stay calm during their upcoming exams. Boys in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 attended an E -Safety workshop. They had to work in teams to discuss Good vs Bad regarding the internet, computer games and mobile phones. They all had some very good ideas regarding Good vs Bad. They also worked with 3 different puppets to share the toys in the classroom . It was interesting asking the boys how they could share: ' we could get a timer'; 'we could get a coin and toss it'; 'we can exchange a toy for the one I would like'. Well done to all of them. Matilda the Musical Boys and staff thoroughly enjoyed an evening at Matilda the Musical on Wednesday evening. The boys all behaved brilliantly and were great ambassadors for the school. NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents This has been a quiet week in school with many boys undertaking their end of term assessments. Meanwhile, some of the older boys have enjoyed a fantastic few days away to Walton Firs, Snowdonia or Normandy - I look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they are back in school. It was a great pleasure to see the boys in Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 perform a lovely assembly on Wednesday morning based on the book, “The Day the Crayons Quit!” They all spoke beautifully and it was especially rewarding to see so many parents in attendance. Next week sees ‘the beginning of the end of term’ with some favourite annual events taking place. In particular, the Choir Evening on Wednesday promises to be a very special occasion and I know that Mrs Watkins has been working hard with the boys in preparation for it. I am also excited about seeing “Jollies” for the first time after welcoming grandparents to the school during the morning. Finally, whilst the boys may be feeling a little more relaxed post-exams, a reminder that by contrast the teaching staff are working hard to complete summer reports and grade cards, amongst many other things, with the aim of sending them out to you before the end of term. Your patience and understanding will be appreciated during a very busy time.

Year 8 in Aberdovey, Wales, at the Outward Bound centre

Year 8 boys are enjoying their week-long residential trip in Wales. Some boys spent a morning on the water but all of them spent the afternoon walking to two separate camp sites in Snowdonia National Park where they pitched tents before tucking into army rations! Year 8 continued their adventure in Snowdonia hiking in the mountains around Cadair Idris. They had great fun paddling up the Dovey estuary. Mr Mitchell

Year 8 finished off another adventure packed day with a jetty jump and a trip to one of the best ice cream shops in Wales!

Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 performed a fantastic assembly this week to Mr Murphy and rest of the school. The theme was colours and "The Day the Crayons Quit". Year 2 wrote their own letters to Mr Murphy about quitting as crayons, Year 1 read out their own writing about rainbow animals and Reception sang "I can sing a rainbow ". Miss Walliss

Year 7 arrived safely at their hotel in Le Touquet after an early start. They had a visit to a sea life centre in Boulogne where they saw a variety of creatures, including sea lions, sharks and turtles. The boys visited an underground city - dug out hundreds of years ago but used in both WW1 and WW2. This was followed by a treasure hunt around the city of Boulogne. Mr Clarke

In Class with Reception and Year 1

Over the past five weeks the boys have been watching and recording how their sunflowers have grown and keeping a diary. Mrs Marskell had no success the slugs ate hers! Cameron's did not survive, but he has planted more seeds. Fingers crossed. The rest have grown and some have been put in bigger pots. Well done to the boys and their Mums for all their hard work! In Geography we have been talking about holidays and what we take in our suitcases. Barnaby Bear helped us think of what to take as he went to Mexico. Most of the suitcases had toys and most importantly food. The boys all read out to the class what they were taking. They are all looking forward to going on holiday and packing their own suitcases. This week Year 9 carried out Science practicals for two days. On Monday, they investigated volume and density. They also used potatoes and hydrogen peroxide to observe the effect of temperature on the activity of the enzyme catalase. In these photos boys are putting sugar solutions into Visking tubing. The tubes were tied off at each end and then placed in distilled water. They were investigating the effect of sugar concentration inside the Visking tubing on the rate of osmosis. The tubing acted as a semi-permeable membrane, akin to the surface membrane of a cell. Mrs Callaghan

This week, I attended the Choir Evening at NESCOT on Wednesday and commended our boys for their excellent singing. I also hosted an inaugural Senior Dinner for boys in Years 9 & 10 together with their counterparts from Manor House. Both were wonderfully entertaining events, albeit for different reasons! Thank you to Mrs Watkins, and Mr Rudkin, respectively for arranging them. At the time of writing, we are hosting a large number of grandparents who are touring the school with their grandsons â€“ this calendar event is a particular favourite of mine because it showcases our support of family relationships. It is lovely to see the pride being shown by the boys in their school! Next Thursday, we will be holding our Prize Giving at Epsom College. This is a showpiece occasion and I am looking forward to welcoming Guy Holloway, Headmaster of Hampton Court House, to present the prizes and say a few words - please do arrive in good time for a 7pm start. For the first time, we will be awarding a new Citizenship prize to a boy in every form. I consider this to be an important initiative and it reflects our emphasis on the values of the new Kingswood House Way as a significant currency within our school community. Naturally, it is not possible to give an award to every child, much as we may wish to do so, and my message to those who do not receive a prize on this occasion is to respond positively by showing a great attitude next term. All things French … For their summer term prep, Year 9 boys were asked to do a project, in English, on any aspect of France or a Frenchspeaking country and present it to the class on the Interactive Whiteboard during the last weeks of term. I was surprised and delighted by all their contributions and have been interested and entertained by all of them. Well done, 9H! My particular favourites, so far, have been Ben Inglis’ interpretation of French music through the ages, Jack Fernandes’ description of Tignes, a French ski resort, and George Marsh’s very thorough study of the French-speaking country of Morocco, containing 28 slides of pictures and text, plus explanations in George’s own words. Is there anything George doesn’t know about Morocco? Mrs Taylor

Some unusual photos from Year 6R Design and Technology When we were studying ‘Mechanisms’ the boys had to design a mechanism that dispenses a single sweet from a hopper. There were some ingenious designs, with boys making gears from the inside of laminated cardboard, very cool. In Year 7 they we will experiment with making their own gears from board and working with gear ratios. A big thank you to the recycling bin again for all your support. Mr Bailey

EXCELLENT WORK

Throughout an adventure packed week the boys hiked across mountains, camped by lakes, climbed tall rock faces, canoed on the Dovey estuary and took part in many team building exercises. They certainly exceeded expectations and reached new heights all week! Harry L won Mr March's prize for the 4L Painshill Park poetry competition. Well done, Harry!

Mr Mitchell There was a stellar performance from the Labs in a Lorry

Year 4 had a fantastic day working with the 'Labs in a Lorry' team from Kingston University last Friday. They spent the day learning how to program and control Lego Mindstorm cars, navigate them through obstacle courses and race in the Year 4 Grand Prix! The boys also had the chance to meet 'HAL', a lifelike medical robot, and learn how to take a pulse and listen to a heartbeat. It was a great opportunity for the boys to find out about coding and robotics but most of all, a wonderful team building experience!

Riverhill Himalayan Gardens Boys in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 spent a wonderful day out at these gardens near Sevenoaks in Kent. Having made dream-catchers the boys spent trying them out and also enjoyed a scavenger hunt through the trails and fields. Miss Walliss

As Barnaby Bear recently took a trip over the channel and visited Paris the boys in Reception and Year 1 have spent time investigating the construction of the Eiffel Tower. They then re-created the famous tower using their own building materials. Mrs Malcolm

The boys have been working with black Play Dough. They were very creative and made a chocolate cake for Haaken's Grandma GG, who celebrated her birthday on Sunday. While they were making the cake they decided to sing Happy Birthday to GG. How wonderful are they all! Mrs Marskell

ACE Programme Year 8 continued their After Common Entrance Enrichment Programme with a day hike in the glorious Surrey Hills. The coped brilliantly with the conditions to complete the 10 mile route. Mr Mitchell

Teachers found guilty! Year 8 spent a very interesting afternoon visiting Kingston Crown Court courtesy of school governor, Her Honour Judge Georgina Kent. The boys were fortunate to enact a mock trial. All the boys were assigned roles while Mr Mitchell, Mr Rudkin and Mrs Danks were the defendants accused of stealing sweets! After, a short but intense trial the jury found Mrs Danks innocent but the teachers were sentenced to three months! Fortunately, the sentences were reduced to community service because they had to drive the minibuses back to school! A big thank you to everyone at Kingston Crown Court for arranging this wonderful experience for the boys. Mr Mitchell

NEWS & NOTICES Dear Parents Thank you for your support during my first year. As you will have heard last night at Prize Giving, it has been a busy time and the future developments for the school are hugely exciting. One of the most significant of these is the revised Kingswood House Way, information about which is outlined overleaf, which captures the very essence of our commitment to a well-rounded preparation for â€œLife beyond the School Gateâ€?. I am grateful to all of my academic and support staff for their hard work and it has been heartening to see the progress made by the boys under their tutelage. They are a talented team indeed! UKMT Maths Challenge Congratulations to boys from 7L, 8C and 8T who received their certificates from UKMT for the maths challenge they each completed. Jude P, 8C, achieved Best in School and also received the qualification for the next stage: UKMT Kangaroo stage. Well done, boys! Mrs Lindley

Mustafa Y, 8C, spent an exciting day at his father's work place in Kingston Hospital as part of ACE program and had an insight of NHS working environment.

From Cricket Pavilion to French Room to DT Room! After 13 years “living” in my delightful little red, white and blue abode, I finally have to relinquish it to Mr Bailey! Next term I shall take up residence in the new building but I will always have fond memories of my original Salle de Français. C’est la vie! Au revoir! Madame Taylor

TASS TASK! During our TASS (Thinking and Study Skills) lessons we have been exploring how it might be to be lost in a jungle and how to survive. Using films by Ray Mears, the boys have tried to work out what equipment and provisions would be needed to survive in the jungle. One practical task was to build a shelter from coconut palm leaves (laurel) and see if it survived the Mr March cyclone test, a hairdryer! This will be followed by the flood test, Mr Hylands watering can; the surviving camp structures will be the winners! Well done, Year 7 boys! Mr Bailey

NOWER WOOD Year 10 visited Nower Wood to study Ecology. As well as completing a GCSE core practical, the boys looked at indicator species in ponds, different methods of sampling and the biotic and abiotic factors affecting populations. We had a very productive day. Mrs Callaghan

In Class with Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 The boys had a joint French lesson and we decided to have an end of term French party with French games and food. Everyone took part and all spoke French throughout the party. Thank you Madame Swift! Mrs Marskell

The boys took turns using the camera to take photos of each other. They all really enjoyed posing for the camera. Not bad photos we might have a junior Mr Mitchell in the making! Mrs Marskell

Year 10 boys investigated how surface area affects the rate of a reaction. They reacted different sized pieces of Calcium carbonate with Hydrochloric acid. They measured the time taken to produce 50ml of Carbon dioxide gas. The boys found a positive correlation between larger surface area and the rate of reaction. They explained their results using Collision Theory. Mrs Callaghan

Winning House Outing On Tuesday, the whole of Nelson House was treated to a fabulous day out at Chessington World of Adventures. This was a reward for gaining the most house points, commendations, points for winning sports competitions, points for the Art competition and other events over the past year. We were extremely lucky with the weather, and armed with water bottles and sun cream, we descended on the park for the whole day. The boys were a credit to the school, in every respect, which made for a very enjoyable day for staff and pupils alike. Too many staff to mention, but, Mrs Dean masterminded the whole operation with military precision; a huge thank you to her from all the staff and boys. Mr Bailey
