Kingston Grammar School was founded by Royal Charter in 1561 on the instructions of Queen Elizabeth I, but can trace its origins back to the 13th century. 1961 On 4th March 1961, Elizabeth II visited KGS as part of our 400-year anniversary celebrations. Seen here inspecting the School’s Combined Cadet Force, she wore a coat made for the occasion in the KGS red.

QUEEN’S
Named after Sophie Hosking MBE, a former KGS student and Olympic champion, Hosking House was established in 2025. Having won gold at the 2012 London Olympics, Sophie was awarded an MBE in the 2013 New Year Honours list for her services to rowing.
Edward Lovekyn (1239–1310) was Bailiff of Kingston in 1277 and again in 1284. A caterer by trade, he entertained King Edward I twice and provided a lavish feast for his wedding to Princess Margaret of France. The bill was still unpaid at the time of the King’s death and, in return for cancelling the debt, King Edward II granted a licence to Lovekyn to found and endow a chantry chapel.
Named after Queen Elizabeth I, who, on 1st March 1561, set her seal on a Charter which established “to endure for ever in the said town of Kyngestonupon-Thames” the “free grammar school of Queen Elizabeth, for the education, training and instruction of boys and youths in grammar”.

Our house system is at the heart of school life. Upon joining KGS, each student is allocated to one of the six houses, each of which is named after an important figure in the School’s history and has its own emblem. A full programme of house events encourages participation and enjoyment across each age group.

WALWORTH
Old Kingstonian Stanley Shoveller gave his name to our fifth house in September 2016. A consummate hockey player, Shoveller won gold medals in two Olympic Games, either side of the Great War (in which he served with distinction, being awarded the Military Cross).
Richard Taverner (1505–1575) was born in Norfolk and attended Corpus Christi College and Cardinal College, Oxford, going on to work for Cardinal Wolsey. After Wolsey’s fall from grace, he allied himself with Thomas Cromwell, for whom he wrote and translated several works in support of the Reformation.
Sir William Walworth (1322–1385) was influential in London politics and was elected mayor of the Westminster staple in 1369, a position he held until his death. This gave him an intimate knowledge of London’s money markets; he was himself a major lender of money to the crown. He was elected as Sherriff in 1370, a Member of Parliament in 1371, and Lord Mayor for the first time in 1374. Elected as an MP again in 1377, his political influence grew, and he was elected for a second term as Mayor of London.
In 1539, he published his most important work, a translation of the Bible, the first complete version to be printed in England. He declined the offer of a knighthood from Elizabeth I but served as a Justice of the Peace for Oxfordshire, and as High Sherriff of Oxfordshire and Kingston.

We recruit and train our own teachers. Our trainees enrol on a three-year training programme, at the end of which they become fully qualified teachers with Qualified Teacher Status. After attending school in London, Stephen completed his Postgraduate qualification in Education at St. Anne’s College, Oxford University, h aving first achieved his dual honours degree in English & History at the U niversity of Southampton. Stephen believes in the transformational power of education and has never stopped learning.
With over 30 years’ teaching experience, Deb has been at Kingston Grammar School since 1992 and is currently Director of KGS International. She has held several senior roles, including Head of Sixth Form, Assistant Head (Co-Curricular) and Assistant Head (Marketing and Admissions).
He has successfully completed several pre-MBA qualifications with Harvard University in the fields o f finance, marketing, data and sustainability. Beginning his career in 1994 at Maidstone Grammar School in Kent where he t aught English, History, Politics and Classics alongside coaching football, cricket and rugby, Stephen quickly rose to become the first and youngest Assistant Headteacher at the school in 2001. He then went on to become one of the youngest ever secondary Heads in the UK when he was appointed as the Head M aster of Aylesbury Grammar School in 2006. Among other pursuits and interests Stephen is a member of the National Theatre, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Freeman of the City of London, a season ticket holder at Crystal Palace F ootball Club, and a member of the Middlesex Cricket Club. He enjoys working with charitable organisations to support a range of young people as well as enjoying art, live music, sport and time with his family.
Having grown up in rural South Wales, Deb read Geography and Geology at Liverpool University. After several years of travel and a stint working for Lego in Australia, she completed a PGCE at Southampton University. Her teaching career began at Tiffin Girls’ School, but the lure of international travel was strong, and she spent another extended period travelling in South East Asia and Australasia. Deb set up KGS International in 2018 and started working closely with the Mountain Education Group, based in Shanghai, in 2021. Mountain Kingston Bilingual School in Suzhou, west of Shanghai, was opened in 2022. Deb is a committed educationalist and passionate about international education. Her three children are actively involved in sailing, and she has recently been part of the organising committee of the Cadet World Sailing Championships in the UK. A keen traveller, Deb is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is perfectly placed to carry the KGS brand into the international market.
