A MESSAGE

from the MAYOR THE CITY OF KINGSTON IS PROUD TO PRESENT KINGSTON’S SENIORS FESTIVAL WITH A WIDE RANGE OF EVENTS THIS OCTOBER. The Seniors Festival is a time to safely connect with your community, meet new people and above all, celebrate what it means to be a Senior. The Victorian Seniors Festival theme for 2021 is keep’n on. The theme recognises the resilience of Senior Victorians and encourages everyone to get back out there and safely participate in events. Our Festival kicks off on 1 October which is International Day of Older Persons. The United Nations General Assembly designated this day as a day to highlight the important contributions that older people make to society and to raise awareness of the issues and challenges of ageing in today’s world.

We’re looking forward to being able to celebrate together and have some fun after COVID-19 cancelled last year’s festival. Council has worked with local community groups and Senior’s clubs to put together a calendar of exciting activities for everyone to enjoy.

Cr Steve Staikos Mayor, City of Kingston

We’re home to more than 47,000 people aged 55+ and they play a pivotal role in our community.

There are plenty of free and lowcost events and workshops to get involved in that are especially designed for older people so you can learn new skills and make new connections.

There is strong evidence that older people who are socially engaged are happier and healthier than those who are socially isolated, and that the socially engaged have better levels of health and wellbeing (Ageing is Everyone’s Business). That’s a perfect reason for everyone to participate in the Kingston Seniors Festival.

Kingston is a proudly diverse city with residents coming from more than 150 countries, speaking 120 languages and following more than 28 different faiths.

On behalf of Council, I would like to say a special thanks to all the volunteers who have helped to coordinate and plan these wonderful events. Happy Seniors Festival 2021.

SAFELY CONNECTING WITH OUR COMMUNITY

THE KINGSTON SENIORS FESTIVAL CELEBRATES AGEING POSITIVELY THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, RECOGNISING THE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION OLDER PEOPLE MAKE TO OUR COMMUNITY. The Festival is an annual event and is an opportunity for Seniors to learn what activities and services are available to them, as well as an opportunity to join local clubs and groups and make new friends.

INTERVIEW WITH

Fran from Aspendale Seniors Citizens Club (ASCC) FRAN IS A VOLUNTEER AT THE ASPENDALE SENIORS CITIZENS CLUB AND IS PART OF THE TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS WHO ORGANISES ACTIVITIES FOR OLDER PEOPLE EACH WEEK. WHAT IS YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE AT THE ASPENDALE SENIORS CITIZENS CLUB? I organise the social activities for club members. This includes bus and train trips and Christmas in July which we celebrated just before the lockdown. When we can, we celebrate Mothers and Father’s Day at the Club. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A VOLUNTEER WITH ASCC? I have volunteered with the Club for about 8 years. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING A VOLUNTEER AT ASCC? I love seeing everyone enjoying themselves and mingling with others. For some of our members, the Monday concert is their highlight for the week. I love line dancing too. ASCC HAS A LONG HISTORY OF ORGANISING EVENTS FOR THE KINGSTON SENIORS FESTIVAL. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE FESTIVAL? The Festival is a great opportunity to promote our Club and to encourage seniors to come along and join in. ASCC IS KNOWN AS THE ‘HAPPY CLUB’. WHY SHOULD OLDER PEOPLE JOIN THE CLUB? It is mentally important for older people to mix with others and be part of the community. Club members are very friendly and welcoming. When I moved to Kingston 9 years ago, I didn’t know anyone. But now I feel part of the community and I feel wonderful. I’ve been supported during life’s highs and lows and it’s just like a little family. Phone interview with Fran occurred 26th July 2021.

TECH TRYOUTS

Kingston Living Library Project YOUR STORY STARTS HERE Kingston Libraries is looking for seniors in our community with funny, interesting, and inspiring stories to tell. If you know someone who would be willing to tell their story for up to 15 minutes, and be videorecorded for posterity, let us know! Once recorded, our living library books will be featured on Kingston LibraryTube. This pilot project is designed to promote understanding, break down prejudice and embrace senior members of our community by valuing their history and culture. It is inspired by the Human Library© concept started in Copenhagen twenty years ago. The project will culminate in a launch event later in the year and some live storytelling by the participants with a Q&A session. Please contact us on 1300 135 668 or email library@kingston.vic.gov.au and a form will be sent to you to fill out.

JUST A FEW OF OUR FABULOUS, FREE RESOURCES AND SERVICES TO TRY: Want to learn new skills and have a laugh with a like-minded adult group? Come along and give your brain a workout with activities such as quizzes, memory puzzles and word search.

Do you read about new technologies or hear others talking about things like 3D printing, virtual reality, QR codes or Spheros and wonder what the heck it’s all about? This is your chance to explore, discover and most importantly have a go at using technology. At Tech Tryouts, the grown-ups have permission to play.

MAKERS MORNINGS

Come and share your latest project with the group, or just sit and craft with others who enjoy similar hobbies and interests. See new art and craft resources coming into the libraries and swap ideas and techniques while enjoying great comeback.

Keeping Seniors Co DIGITAL LITERACY CLASSES AT KINGSTON LIBRARIES KINGSTON LIBRARIES IS HELPING OLDER PEOPLE KEEP UP WITH TECHNOLOGY TO STAY CONNECTED IN THE MODERN ONLINE WORLD. Workshops are on offer at Kingston Libraries to help beginners find their feet online. The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 have forced a large amount of community interaction online, leaving some people isolated due to a lack of confidence with digital technology. The Kingston Libraries Digital Literacy program began in March this year and feedback from participants has been very positive. One participant shared, “I am now more aware of the jargon used in the online world and the resources available for Seniors.” The workshops are small to promote learning and allow for questions. The topics that are covered include: • The absolute basics • Getting started online • Safety first • Online skills (socialising online, Facebook, camera) • Connecting to others (video calling, Skype, WhatsApp, FaceTime and ZOOM) • Data (what is data, choosing a data plan, managing data, home data vs mobile data) • Wi-Fi and mobile networks • All about apps • Important sites online: Telehealth, MyGov, Consumers Affairs • QR Codes and iPad check-ins at medical practises, hospitals and social settings.

16 KINGSTON SENIORS FESTIVAL 2021

The free program is aimed at seniors who are not confident in the digital world but who are enthusiastic to learn. Beginners with little or no digital skills are encouraged to become involved. iPads are available to borrow for the duration of the program, if you don’t have your own device. In response to the popularity of the program and the excellent reviews from participants, the program has been extended to extra library branches and now will be delivered from the Cheltenham, Chelsea, Parkdale and Dingley Village branches. For more information about the program or to find out how to become involved, phone Kingston Libraries on 1300 135 668 or visit kingston.vic.gov.au/library

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SCAMS SCAMS TARGET PEOPLE OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, AGES AND INCOME LEVELS. ANYONE CAN BE THE VICTIM OF A SCAM. Scams succeed because they look like the real thing and catch you off guard when you’re not expecting it. Scammers are getting smarter and taking advantage of new technology, new products or services and major events to create believable stories that will convince you to give them your money or personal details. PROTECT YOURSELF: Be alert to the fact that scams exist. When dealing with uninvited contacts from people or businesses, whether it’s over the phone, by mail, email, in person or on a social networking site, always consider the possibility that the approach may be a scam. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Do not open suspicious texts, pop-up windows or click on links or attachments in emails. Delete them if you are unsure or suspicious. Do not respond to phone calls about your computer asking for remote access. Hang up, even if they mention a well-known company such as Telstra. Keep your personal details secure. Put a lock on your mailbox and shred your bills and other important documents before throwing them out. Keep your passwords and pin numbers in a safe place. Be very careful about how much personal information you share on social media.

Keep your mobile devices and computers secure. Always use password protection, don’t share access with others, update security software and back up content. Protect your WiFi network with a password and avoid using public computers or WiFi hotspots to access online banking or provide personal information. Choose your passwords carefully. Choose passwords that would be difficult for others to guess and update them regularly. Don’t use the same password for every account or online profile. Be careful when shopping online. Beware of offers that seem too good to be true, and always use an online shopping service that you know and trust. Further information about scams can be found at Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au Source: this information was adapted from Scamwatch which is run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Preventing Falls ACCORDING TO THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF HEALTH AND WELFARE, FALLS ARE AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST CONTRIBUTOR TO HOSPITALISED INJURY CASES AND A LEADING CAUSE OF INJURY DEATHS. Falls can happen to anyone but falls requiring hospitalisation are more common in older people and are most likely to occur in the home. Although many falls do not result in injury, they can create a fear of falling that can result in loss of confidence and can restrict daily activities and chores.

WHAT CAUSES OLDER PEOPLE TO FALL? There are several factors that increase the risk of falling as people age. These include the following: • Changes in your body such as vision problems and loss of feeling • Weakening muscles and stiffening joints • Side effects from some medications • Balance problems • Reduced physical activity • Poor diet and not drinking enough water • Low calcium (can increases the risk of having a fracture if you do fall) • Sore feet or unsafe shoes • Trip hazards like rugs or floor mats, uneven surfaces and poor lighting at home or outside. • Illness, such as an infection or recovering from surgery can temporarily increase our risk of falling.

20 KINGSTON SENIORS FESTIVAL 2021

HOW TO AVOID FALLS? To avoid falls and related injuries, consider the following: • Take steps to improve safety in and around your home (see the following tips). • Look after your health. Stay up to date with routine health checks, eat a healthy diet, and exercise to improve your balance, strength and flexibility. • Wear shoes that are comfortable and fit well. Ensure that the soles of shoes aren’t slippery and that laces are not loose and become a trip hazard.

at Home

HOW TO IMPROVE SAFETY AROUND THE HOME? To increase safety in the home to reduce your risk of falling, consider the following: • Ensure lighting inside and outside the home is good. • Remove clutter and make sure walkways and corridors are kept clear and well lit. • Check that mats and rugs are secure and have no tears or wrinkles. Put adhesive strips on all mats and rugs to avoid slips. • Ensure furniture is sturdy and easy to get into and out of. • Wipe up spills immediately. • Install support rails in the bathroom or near steps. • Ensure clothing and shoes do not become a trip hazard. • Avoid climbing ladders. Ask for help if you need to access something at height, such as changing a light bulb or clearing leaves from outside gutters. • Keep outside paths well swept and repair broken or uneven walking surfaces. • Ask an occupational therapist about ways to make your home safer.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FALL AT HOME? If you happen to have a fall at home, do not panic. Stay still for a few moments and try to relax. If you can get up by yourself, roll over onto your stomach and try to crawl to a stable piece of furniture. Try to get up onto your knees. Push up, using your strongest leg or arm while firmly holding onto the furniture. If you can’t get up by yourself, try to crawl or drag yourself to somewhere on carpet and find anything that can keep you warm, such as bedclothes, a towel or clothing while you wait for help. If you don’t have a personal alarm, call out for help or use an object that you can bang to make a loud noise to alert a neighbour. If you know no one will hear you, keep warm and try to get up again later. For peace of mind, if you are at risk of falls and live on your own, you may wish to consider a personal alarm or safety device which can detect falls or call for help in an emergency. DIAL TRIPLE ZERO (000) FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES. Following a fall, see your doctor to check for injuries and to assess whether there was a medical cause for the fall.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM

Financial Abuse FINANCIAL ABUSE OCCURS WHEN SOMEONE TAKES OR MISUSES YOUR MONEY, ASSETS OR PROPERTY WITHOUT YOU AGREEING. MOST OFTEN, THIS ABUSE IS CARRIED OUT BY SOMEONE KNOWN TO THE OLDER PERSON, WITH MOST ABUSERS BEING AN ADULT CHILD. ABUSERS CAN ALSO BE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS, RELATIVES OR FRIENDS. Financial abuse is classified as elder abuse. It can happen to an older person with other types of abuse such as social abuse or neglect. Financial abuse can often make an older person feel like they no longer have control over their finances or assets and can increase anxiety and stress. It can happen to any older person. Financial abuse can range from minor incidents, such as borrowing small amounts of money and not repaying the loan through to extreme incidents, like misusing the Financial Enduring Power of Attorney.

Regardless, the impact can be significant for an older person and can impact on their lifestyle, leisure and the necessities of life, such as food and housing. Frequently, an older person might rely on family and relatives to assist them with their finances or assets. In these circumstances, an older person can be more vulnerable to abuse if they’re not included in the decisions about their finances. There are many ways that a perpetrator can be financially abusive to an older person. These can include the following examples: • Uses the older person’s money without their consent or knowledge • Signs legal documents on behalf of an older person • Threatens or punishes an older person if they don’t give the perpetrator money • Makes the older person think that they can’t manage their own money • Selling or disposing the older person’s property without permission • Shopping for an older person and not returning any change • Not repaying loans • Not contributing to household expenses • Misusing financial powers under an Enduring Power of Attorney • Taking advantage of the sharing of resources within families These actions take control away from the older person.

PREPARING FOR

SUMMER AS SUMMER APPROACHES, IT’S IMPORTANT TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS, INCLUDING DANGEROUS HEAT AND BUSHFIRE SMOKE. THE KEY POINT TO REMEMBER THIS SUMMER IS TO KEEP COOL. Keep Your Body Cool • Drink cold drinks and eat smaller, cold meals such as salads and fruit. • Wear loose fitting, light coloured clothing. • If you must go outside, apply sunscreen, wear a hat and stay in the shade as much as possible. • Plan your day to be indoors during the hottest parts of the day. If you must go outside, try to do so in the morning when it’s the coolest and keep time outdoors to a minimum. • Put wet towels or cool packs on your arms or neck or put your feet in cool water. • Minimise physical activity and do household chores early in the morning when it’s coolest. Keep Your House Cool • Close windows and doors to keep the heat out. Close curtains and blinds. • Use air conditioning if you have it. Fans can also be effective. • Open windows at night if you can let in cool air. • Know which room in your house is the coolest (this will often be on the ground floor on the south side) and go here in the hottest part of the day. • Try not to use your stove and oven. Source: this information was adapted from NSW Health’s ‘How to stay healthy in the heat’ advice.

SMOKE HAZARDS FROM BUSHFIRE The Summer bushfires over 2019 and 2020 created long periods of poor air quality across much of Melbourne. Some people exposed to smoke may notice irritation to eyes, a runny nose, a sore throat, changes to breathing or a cough. Exposure to bushfire smoke can also cause anxiety and distress. In the event of future bushfires, you can reduce your exposure to hazardous smoke by doing the following: • Keeping doors and windows closed and covering gaps under doors with towels. • Resting indoors in the coolest room in the house. • Avoid activities that make indoor air quality worse such as smoking inside or stirring up dust by sweeping. • Visit local cleaner air spaces. This could be one of the heat refuge spots listed. Source: Bushfire safety information was adapted from the Victorian Government’s “Supporting people when air quality is heavily impacted by bushfire smoke – Guidance for local government”.
