SUMMER 2021/22
WELCOME As the weather heats up, so does the action across Kingston Libraries. As gateways to knowledge and culture, we all know the fundamental role libraries play. As a place to access key resources, services, and opportunities for learning, our libraries provide a real sense of community for many people. After such a challenging year, we are thrilled to be able to welcome our members and visitors back, as we look forward to another exciting summer program. The Summer Reading Club is back with competitions, challenges, events and activities to keep our younger members busy (see page 4). We are excited about our new and improved children’s area at Parkdale Library, which is now ready for visitors (catch a sneak peek on page 5).

Compliance with government health regulations requires that all visitors and staff aged 16 years and over must be fully vaccinated, unless a valid exemption is supplied.
Our online concert Tracks from the Stacks, featuring local artists pre-recorded live, promises to be a great event in February. Come along to Dingley Village Library in February to hear Lorraine Smith’s amazing tale of discovering a mysterious 16th century manuscript in her Warrnambool bookshop (see page 3). The green thumbs out there can learn more about food forests and seed raising from garden designer Kaye Roberts-Palmer via our YouTube channel (see page 6). All this, plus the continuation of the Home Library Service and support for online learning, means there is something for everyone at Kingston Libraries. SUMMER READING CLUB Kingston Libraries Summer Reading Club is back with competitions, challenges, events and activities to keep you busy these holidays.
This program is about encouraging independent readers up to age 16 to read over the summer break. Register for the Summer Reading Club and simply read 10 books or for 10 hours for your chance to win some fabulous prizes. There will be lots of take-home crafts, ideas for things to do at home, author talks, animal encounters, and Koorie Storytimes, as well as drop-in activities such as Lego®, green screens and Where’s the Tail?

This year for the first time we are encouraging participants to use Beanstack to keep track of your books read and number of reading hours. Create an account for yourself or your family via the free app or at kingstonlibraries.beanstack.com , and let Beanstack track your stats for you. You’ll be connected to Kingston Libraries’ Summer Reading Club Challenge to earn online badges and ‘real’ prizes from the Library too. We go into recess over Christmas, but you can still access activities in our past online sessions by going to our YouTube channel (KingstonLibraryTube) for: Crafty Kids, Little Book Worms, STEAMPunk, Little Bang Discovery On Demand, and of course our back catalogue of virtual storytimes. Storytimes and after school clubs for children will resume in February 2022 in compliance with government regulations.

Bringing the library to you. All year round, Kingston Libraries offer a free home delivery service to local residents who are unable to access the library independently. While our libraries have been closed to help slow the spread of COVID-19, the Kingston Library team have been hard at work expanding the service to as many eligible people as possible and we look forward to continuing this service into the future.
HOW DOES THE HOME LIBRARY SERVICE WORK? Once a month, eligible community members receive a delivery of library items to their door. Upon joining the service, you’re able to let us know the types of items you like to borrow from the library. Our friendly team of librarians and volunteers then select items on your behalf based on your preferences. What can I borrow? You can borrow up to 40 items each month, including: • Books (including large print) • Audiobooks • DVDs • Magazines • Items in community languages.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Community members of any age residing in the City of Kingston who are: • Unable to visit the library due to poor health or mobility challenges • Full-time carers who are unable to visit the library during opening hours • Residents in aged care • People recovering from an injury or illness who require the service temporarily • Children whose parents or guardian fit the above criteria.

BOOK GROUPS Our book groups will go into recess in December and return in March 2022, with first titles being available from February for collection.
Our Friday afternoon book group at Chelsea Library will be moving to the second Monday afternoon of the month at 2pm in 2022. There are plenty of spaces available. NORDIC NOIR
Nordic noir (also known as Scandinavian or Scandi Crime) is a popular sub-genre of crime fiction set in Scandinavia or the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. It’s influenced some British authors whose works are set in the Shetland Isles and Outer Hebrides too. It departs from other crime genres by its inclusion of social criticism. Stories are usually police procedurals featuring a bleak landscape, dark and morally complex mood, and a worn-down detective. The writing is direct and spare. Swedish writer Henning Mankell, creator of the Kurt Wallander series, is sometimes referred to as “the father of Nordic noir”. And its not just books; there’s lots of popular tv series too.

KINGSTON ISO PROJECT We’ve continued collecting items for our Kingston ISO Project in 2021 - snapshots of this very strange time for our local history collection so that future generations of researchers will be able to see what 2020/21 looked like from the perspective of the people living it. In this session we will demonstrate how to set up your digital vaccination certificate in the Service Victoria app on your smartphone. You will learn how to create a MyGov account, link your Medicare, download your certificate, link the certificate to Service Victoria, and even import the certificate into other apps, such as Wallet, on your smartphone. An Australian Government initiative, Be Connected provides access to a range of free self-paced tutorials to help you learn more about technology in your own time, at your own pace.
LinkedIn Learning is free through the library. It has short and long business, computing and creative courses including: Photography, Animation, Ms-Excel, Java Script, Bookkeeping, and so very much more.
Topics include everything from the absolute basics and how to use the internet safely through to connecting online with people through Facetime and Whatsapp.
