WELCOME As the colder months approach, what better way to escape the chill than to head to your local library. Kingston Libraries has plenty planned this winter to keep all ages entertained. Now all of our branches are open again, you won’t need to travel far from home to visit one of Kingston’s libraries. The refurbished Highett Library opens its doors on 25 May, the last of our nine branches to re-open. Come in and see what’s new. This July Kingston Libraries is hosting Mystery and Mayhem Month. Featuring talks and workshops by some of Australia’s finest crime writers, movies, a trivia night and more, this is a not-to-be missed month for crime and mystery lovers. Our Chelsea Twilights event series also continues with Chelsea Library offering a range of free activities every Tuesday after dark including movie screenings, music and guest presenters. Don’t forget to check out our Race Around the World school holiday program as well. Pick up a flyer at your local branch to see the range of activities on offer to keep the kids busy. Enjoy everything your local library has to offer throughout winter or curl up on the couch with a good read. Cr Steve Staikos, Mayor Programming is subject to government health regulations. SHORT STORY DISPENSERS You’ll find our new free short story dispensers out and about in Kingston this winter. Check the Library website for their current locations. Try Kingston Libraries’ Short Story Dispensers with 1, 3 and 5 minute curated stories from authors around the globe. Simply select a reading time from the panel and a free original short story will print just for you. With a database of thousands of stories, there’s something for everyone. Take a break from your everyday and enjoy a moment to just read.

Laura Waters shares her story of how and why she set out to walk the untamed landscapes of New Zealand’s Te Araroa track, 3000 kilometres of mountainous trail, emerging 6 months later “rewildered” and transformed. Laura’s story addresses many themes: overcoming anxiety, the healing power of nature, facing fears, and finding and following an authentic life path. Talk followed by book sales and signing. Self-publishing zines has a long history, from personal diaries, to poetry, punk, political, and fantasy/ sci-fi themed publications. Selfpublishing is now easier than ever and, in Melbourne, we’re lucky to have the largest zines festival in Australia. Join two experienced zine makers from the Sticky Institute as they guide us through how to make them and give us their best tips and tricks. All materials will be provided. Bestselling author of Wimmera and The Rip, Mark Brandi will discuss and sign his new thriller The Others – out June 30.
Candice Fox has won back to back Ned Kelly Awards, and has also been collaborating very successfully with the author James Patterson since 2015, with their first book Never Never going straight to number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Her latest novel is The Chase.
Mark Brandi graduated with a criminal justice degree and worked extensively in the justice system, before changing direction and deciding to write. His first novel, Wimmera, won the coveted British Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger, as well as a slew of Australian accolades. His second novel, The Rip, was also published to critical acclaim.
Ellie Marney is an award-winning YA crime author who, due to her meticulous research, may or may not know how to commit the perfect murder. Her titles include None Shall Sleep, the Every trilogy, No Limits, White Night and the Circus Hearts series.

Victoria Police Forensics Parkdale Library Monday 12 July 4pm-5.30pm Join Monica van Wissen from the Victoria Police Forensic Services Department (VPFSD) as she introduces the 18 casework areas of VPFSD, including Major Crime Scene, Ballistics and DNA. This talk will cover some of the types of examinations that can be done and the results that can be found. Bring all the best questions from real cases and crime TV shows and find out more about forensic science. Monica has worked exclusively in Forensic Biology for 18 years, starting her career in volume crime and moving to major crime. Her regular duties include case management, biological examinations, DNA profile interpretation, Court reporting and crime scene examination.
An Afternoon of Melbourne Crime with John Silvester Cheltenham Library Thursday 15 July 2.30pm-3.30pm Spend a criminal afternoon with The Age’s senior crime reporter John Silvester, aka Sly of the Underworld (on 3AW). John Silvester has been reporting crime in Melbourne since the late 1970s. His work was adapted into the top rating Underbelly television series and he has acted as presenter in a series of awardwinning television crime documentaries. Join crime author Garry Disher for a writing workshop in the atmosphere of the historic Chelsea Court House. This workshop is aimed at writers from all genres, not just crime.
Kyle Perry’s work as a counsellor has exposed him to stories and journeys that would fill a hundred books. He follows his breakout novel, The Bluffs, with a new work, The Deep, due out in July - a heartstopping thriller set on the rugged coast of Tasmania about modern-day pirates, family bonds and betrayals, and the hidden dangers that lurk in the deep.
Garry is a Ned Kelly Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, 3-time winner of the German Crime prize and 2-time Ned Kelly award winner. Leigh Redhead has worked on a prawn trawler, as a waitress, exotic dancer, masseuse, teacher and apprentice chef. She is the author of the awardwinning Simone Kirsch private eye series: Peepshow (2004), Rubdown (2005), Cherry Pie (2007) and Thrill City (2010). She has recently completed a stand-alone crime novel set in an alternative community in the early 80s, as part of a PhD in Australian noir fiction.
Amy Suiter Clarke hails from Minnesota where she has set her nail-biting debut novel, Girl, 11 (Text Publishing). A social worker turned true-crime podcaster investigates a decades-old serial killer cold case—only to unwittingly create new victims. Convinced that the serial killer is back, the threat suddenly becomes very personal. Amy Suiter Clarke is a writer and communications specialist who has been recently reviewed in the New York Times. Suzanne Frankham’s debut novel, Shadow Over Edmund Street (Journeys to Words Publishing) is set in the harbour city of Auckland, her one-time hometown. Ruth McIver’s I Shot the Devil (Hachette Australia), is a spellbinding story of murder, trauma and childhoods lost. Set in Southport, in New York state, Erin Sloane was sixteen when a fellow high school senior was murdered by his friends. Twenty years later, Erin thought she’d left the memories and the town behind after lots of pills and alcohol but her ageing father needs her to come back home. Work at a local magazine takes her closer and closer to a terrifying truth, and closer and closer to danger. Ruth McIver recently completed her PhD in true crime inspired fiction at Curtin University. Her first novel, Nothing Gold, was runner up in the inaugural Banjo Prize (2018) and was one of seven novels selected to be pitched at the Bloody Scotland Crime Writing Festival (2014). I Shot the Devil won the 2018 Richell Prize for Emerging Writers, and is released this September. | 9

Learn how to be a family history super sleuth. Dingley Village Library Thursday 22 July 2021 10am-12pm Are there dark rumours about your family history that you would like to uncover? This fun 2-hour workshop will introduce you to a range of Australian and UK crime records and help you to uncover your ancestor’s wicked ways. The workshop is designed for those who have begun a family tree or who are just starting out on their genealogy journey. This will be a hands-on workshop allowing you to investigate members of your family tree. There is a wealth of free records and databases to explore, including free access to Ancestry Library Edition and FindMyPast for Kingston Libraries members. We will look at these and many other research sources.
