TINY TOTS RHYME TIME
PRESCHOOL STORYTIME
For babies & toddlers 0-24 months.
For preschool children 2-5 years.
Encourage a love of stories and reading with your baby at our Tiny Tots program. Enjoy an interactive 20 minute session full of songs, rhymes, books and finger play. Learn techniques to develop your child’s early literacy skills and discover the perfect books to choose for baby. Enjoy the company of other babies and parents and get to see our new books for and about babies and toddlers before anyone else.
You and your child will love Storytime at the library! Enjoy a fun 30 minute session of stories, action songs, rhymes and puppets. Storytime helps develop language, literacy and communication skills, and provides an opportunity to socialise with others. Best of all Storytime fosters a love of books and reading! Borrow books after each session to share at home and continue the fun.

1000 BOOKS BEFORE SCHOOL For preschool children 0-5 years. Share 1000 books with your child in the years before they start school to prepare them for formal learning and nurture a love of books, reading and language. It’s never too early to start reading to your child – even newborns. You can read a thousand different books or read one book a thousand times! Books experienced at library story time sessions, preschool, daycare and playgroup can also be counted towards your child’s total. You’ll get a free library bag when you register, there are milestone rewards to collect as you progress through the program, and of course there’s a certificate at the end. The program is completed when your child reaches 1000 books or they start school. Register via the Beanstack App and collect your bag from the library.

Auslan Storytime is held at 10:30am at Cheltenham Library on the second Friday of each month during their regular storytime program and it is also live-streamed.
Perfect for families with young children. A wonderful opportunity for busy parents to enjoy story time at the library with your children. Have fun with stories, songs, rhymes and puppets. SENSITIVE STORYTIME Sensitive Storytime is designed for preschool aged children with additional needs or those who simply prefer a quieter and calmer session. Sensory needs around sound and light are taken into consideration and visual cues are used to help children follow what comes next in the session. Enjoy short stories and songs, followed by simple sensory play in this 30 minute activity. When:

TIPS FOR READING & CHOOSING BOOKS
1 Read to your child for at least 10 minutes a day 2 Have fun with reading – make silly noises, voices and sounds; enjoy cuddles, laughs and actions
3 Look for books with rhythm, rhyme and repetition, and interactive books such as lift-the-flap, touch-and-feel and books that get you to do something
4 Talk about the book and what’s
happening in the pictures and story
5 Reading helps build empathy and exposes your child to different and new experiences
6 Let your child choose books too – they may like the pictures, topic or simply the colours
7 Reading helps develop your
child’s vocabulary as they are exposed to words they may not hear in everyday conversations
8 Let your child see you reading
too – they will want to copy you
9 If you have another language in your home, read the book in that language (or make up a different story to match the pictures)

Collect a take-home craft kit from the library each month. The kit will be themed to match an author, illustrator or genre of book and include a simple craft to do at home and a list of suggested books to borrow and read.
