Our big build begins Construction is underway at our new Mordi Aquatic Centre. Builders ADCO are now onsite and with site-levelling underway, those of you who live and work locally will have noticed some activity. The centre – our largest ever project – is being built next to Jack Grut Reserve on Governor Road in Mordialloc. ADCO is an industry leader in aquatic and leisure centre delivery in Victoria, having completed more than 50 large scale aquatic and community leisure centres in the past few years. More than 10,600 community submissions across six stages of consultation have helped shape this exciting new centre. Creative St Brigid’s PS, Mordialloc students have also been inspired.

Thanks for all the feedback! Revitalising shopping strips and activity centres

We’ve been getting on with the projects and initiatives we know are important to you. More shopping strips have been spruced up, more playgrounds revamped and sports facilities upgraded, new cycling/walking paths added and so much more. As part of our Talking Kingston platform, more than 459 of you submitted ideas on how we can best spend your rates.

Walk along Charman Road, Mentone and you’ll notice a new footpath, beautiful street furniture and a new welcome sign. This fresh new look is part of our Small Shopping Centres Improvement plan. Como Parade, Mentone has had an upgraded with a new footpath, drainage imporvements, new seating and bins and the footpath at Nepean Highway, Bonbeach has been upgraded. The Mentone Heritage Station Arts & Craft Market is a lively addition to the shopping area. It’s a bustling monthly fixture in the piazza behind the old station.

Work will start mid next year on the revitalisation of Edithvale shopping strip, Nepean Highway following feedback from local traders and the broader community. New drainage, seating, pavements, street furniture, landscaping and an accessible parking bay are planned.

Adding more cycling/walking paths Our Walking and Cycling Plan 2023–2028 includes 40 projects suggested by our community and we’ve been getting on with adding more shared paths, bicycle lanes, traffic signals and crossings.

Those submissions helped shape our 2024/25 Budget and we’ve been getting on with your top priorities and bringing your ideas to life. We’re now seeking ideas for the 2025/26 Budget at yourkingstonyoursay.com. au/talking-kingston Here are a few projects we know you’ll love! A healthier Kingston.

In the past year, we’ve completed 14 projects, including a path from Kingston Road to Victory Road, Clarinda, the Longbeach Trail, Aspendale and a path at Tootal Road, Dingley Village. Another 28 projects are at concept or design stage.

Improving sporting facilities Heatherton Cricket Club will soon enjoy the upgrades at Heatherton Recreation Reserve, including renovation, ground leveling and re-turfing to the centre Wicket table.

Southern United hockey players look forward to a resurfaced pitch at Kingston Heath Reserve.

Southern Road Reserve, Mentone has benefited from drainage and a new irrigation system as well as new goals posts, surface levelling and returfing. A new cricket wicket has also been added.

At Kingston Heath Reserve returfing work is underway on the hockey pitch. The project involves removing the entire layer of existing synthetic grass and shock pad, which will be recycled at a specialised facility and then replaced with a brand-new, world-class sand filled synthetic grass surface, including a new shock pad.

Revamping playgrounds and open space Great community engagement helped us develop our Play Your Way Strategy and we’ve been continuing to revamp and build new playgrounds. The little playground in Brownfield Street Reserve, Mordialloc has been rejuvenated with a dual swing set, accessible carousel, a junior and senior combination unit, nature play area and more. McDonald-Healy Reserve playground, Parkdale now has a wonderful revamp with a triple swing set, a combination unit, nature play area, accessible picnic setting, wheelchair-accessible sand play table and a new drinking fountain.

And Granary Lane, Mentone now has a beautiful little pocket park with colourful curved seating, tables and grassed areas. The old toilet block artwork is displayed in the new park. We worked with Cleanaway to create the stunning Victory Road Reserve, Clarinda Hundreds of trees, thousands of shrubs and grasses, a fenced offleash dog park, fitness stations and lookout have been added to the former landfill.

Improving traffic flow and safety One of Kingston’s most dangerous local road intersections – Crawford Road and The Parade, in Clarinda – now has traffic islands providing refuge for pedestrians and encouraging vehicles to slow and/or stop. A range of other projects include signalisation of Thames

Promenade and Scotch Parade, Chelsea, a bicycle ramp on Thames Promenade and speed cushion installations in various locations including Rowans Road, Moorabbin, Mentone Parade, Mentone and Eel Race Road, Carrum. These improve road safety pedestrians and cyclists.

Graffiti removal is important to our community and we have four crews on the road every day cleaning up streets and buildings. You can report graffiti on our website or via the Snap Send Solve app. We also have free graffiti removal kits and wipes available to residents and businesses from our Customer Service Centre at Cheltenham. In other public space improvements, we’ve added a new all-abilities, all-gender toilet block on the popular community walking and cycling path near Nest Café in Waterways. Informing on community safety We’ve been talking all things safety with you at a range of community information sessions. Our safety display at Spring Fair in Clayton South included emergency services with vehicles and Coffee with a Cop events offered community members and traders an opportunity to engage with local police in a relaxed and informal setting. Victoria Police shared information leaflets with practical advice and tips.

We’ve also hosted fire safety and water safety information sessions. Following recent requests for lighting from the local community, we’ve installed five solar-powered lights along the popular pedestrian pathway within Glyn Court/Chelsea

Walk or cycle the coast on the fabulous Bay Trail, stopping off for a coffee, ice cream or fish n chips along the route.

Did you know? The Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands is 261 hectares of freshwater swamps and marshlands and is listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Kingston Arts present Melbourne’s big names and new talent and our gallery spaces host professional and emerging artists. Over summer there’s plenty for the whole family. Moorabbin Music + Arts Festival returns (21-23 February) bringing Kingston Arts Centre alive with music, art installations, hands-on workshops, crafts, kids’ activities and cultural performances. Be summer safe Summer is a season of relaxation and fun but it’s also a time to take stock of safety messages. Here are a few tips on taking care of yourself and others to ensure an enjoyable break.

Beach safety

% Ensure your pool/spa fence is compliant – check regularly. × Never leave pool gates propped open. % Always empty inflatable pools and paddling pools immediately after use. % Ensure your children learn to swim.

The surf can be unpredictable, so: % swim between the red and yellow flags at a lifesaver-patrolled beach % read the safety signs – and ask a lifeguard for safety advice % know the conditions, know your limits, swim with a buddy % always watch your children when around water × and don’t jump off piers and jetties, you never know what’s beneath the surface.

Beat the heat Heat can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion which can lead to life-threatening heatstroke. Older people, young children and people with a medical condition are most at risk. Stay safe by: % drinking plenty of water % never leaving anyone or pets in a car % staying somewhere cool % planning ahead.

Bushfires If you are holidaying in a bushfire prone area, work out your level of risk and prepare a survival plan.

Let’s keep our beaches clean We love the beach and urge everyone not to leave their litter on it.

Rubbish left on our beaches is not only an eyesore but damaging to the environment. Together with our community we encourage all beachgoers to use bins provided or take their rubbish home. Beach-loving families, life savers and swimmers have gotten behind our anti-littering Bin it or swim in it campaign to help protect our beautiful coastline. With summer underway, we’re calling on everyone using the beach to respect the natural environment and other beach users. Dispose of litter correctly to prevent pollution of our beaches and bay.

We have 13 kilometres of stunning coastline in Kingston. Let’s take pride in it. It’s easy – take your rubbish to the nearest bin or into a bag to take home for disposal.

Bins at the beach Let’s all work towards a cleaner, wildlife-friendly beach without overflowing bins that are used as dumping spots for gazebos, chairs, Eskys and more. To help prevent that and reduce litter, the bins have been moved to beach access points, including pathways and car parks where trucks can empty them more often during the day without waiting for crowds to vacate the busy beaches.

Podcasters’ doco creates a buzz Two young documentary makers are getting industry attention for a series they made at Westall Library’s recording booth. Callum Wright and Jacob Grozdanovski recorded documentary No Tone Unturned which takes a deep dive into Australia’s most iconic albums. The show was part of the official selection for Sydney Web Fest 2024 and the podcasters have been nominated for an award for Best Concept in Non-Fiction Audio at New Zealand Web Fest. The best friends said the availability of recording equipment and space at Westall Library was instrumental in them getting their show from idea to recorded.

From Santa story times to book groups, interesting classes to book and music borrowing and so much more, our eight branches provide an array of educational, fun and informative goings-on. Eisteddfod by the Bay is preparing to celebrate its 70th anniversary next year. The City of Kingston Aria from Grand Opera – the highlight of the Eisteddfod by the Bay Senior Adult Vocal Section – was held recently at the Kingston Arts Centre. The eisteddfod was formerly the Mordialloc Eisteddfod and is a not-for-profit community organisation run by passionate volunteers. It has five sections – Speech and Drama, Choral, Junior Vocal, Senior Vocal and Pianoforte. The eisteddfod provides a platform for young actors, singers, and pianists the opportunity to perform for a professional adjudicator, who provides a written critique of their performance. Many eisteddfod winners go on to enjoy a professional career.

Kingston comprises two road networks – those managed by us and roads managed by Department of Transport and Planning (DTP).

Despite a gloomy start to the morning, Spring Fair day turned out bright and sunny – perfect conditions for the biggest crowd ever seen at the event.

To report a pothole or road maintenance issue on a DTP-managed road, you can fill out an online form on the VicRoads website or, if it’s an urgent road hazard, you can call their 24/7 hotline on 13 11 70.

We estimate that there were more than 5,000 attendees at Clayton South’s Keeley Park.

INSPIRING YOUNG LEADERS Incredible resilience and determination are the hallmarks of our Young Citizen of the Year 2024, Kala Petronijevic. Despite severe vision impairment, Kala has excelled academically and has introduced blind tennis to Cheltenham, creating an inclusive space for children with vision impairments to enjoy sports.

The Dingley Venturers Group is Kingston’s Young Community Group of the Year. From mentoring younger scouts to volunteering on ANZAC Day, at park cleanups, and events, they consistently give back. Our annual Youth Awards are open to 12–25-year-olds. Platform 81, home of Kingston Youth Services.

LEVELLING THE PLAYING FIELD More than 100 Kingston children will get their first taste of sport this summer as we partner with charity Team Sports 4 All. With support from the Australian Sports Commission, we’ve launched the Fair Play Project to cover the costs of sport for children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Team Sports 4 All will continue to fund and support them. To be eligible families must live in Kingston, have a current health care card and/or reside in government housing and/or are an asylum seeker/refugee; have a child aged between 5-18 with an interest in and capacity to commit to a team sport and a parent/ carer who can support them. Support for our younger community Kingston Youth Services delivers a wide range of programs and services to young people across the City of Kingston. From providing hands-on experiences in volunteering through FReeZA and Youth ACT to opportunities to connect socially through YA Chat, YS Art Club and the Drop In Program. Young people are also connected to mentors through L2P in order to safely reach their driving hours and achieve their Learner’s.

A festive sparkle We’ve responded to community calls for greater investment in decorations to bring a sense of community pride at this special time of year. We listened to your appeal for more festive cheer in our shopping precincts with 10 locations getting a Christmas touch up. Large shiny stars and colourful Christmas trees are cheering up Carrum foreshore, Dingley Village, Moorabbin Station and Arts precinct, at Aspendale, Edithvale, Highett and Parkdale shops. Enjoy the festive vibe at Mentone Heritage Station and Gardens, The Strand, Chelsea, the entrance to Beeson Reserve and Edithvale.

RECYCLING, FOOD & GARDEN WASTE COLLECTION 2025 Your recycling and food and garden waste bins are collected on alternate weeks on the same day as your landfill bin. There will be no changes to your bin collection days or frequency in 2025. Collections will take place on public holidays, including Christmas Day.
