SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE R.E.M. TRIBUTE R.E.M. was an American alternative rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. The band released their debut single, "Radio Free Europe," in 1981 on the independent label Hib-Tone, which gained them local notoriety and led to a recording contract with IRS Records. R.E.M. released their debut album Murmur in 1983, which was ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine as the number one album of the year (beating out Michael Jackson’s Thriller). They defined the indie rock or college rock sound of the 1980s and were influential on bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and Coldplay. They would go on to release international hits such as “The One I Love,” “Stand,” “Orange Crush,” “Losing My Religion,” “Shiny Happy People,” “Everybody Hurts,” and “Man on the Moon.”
R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024. SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE was formed in 2024 as a tribute to R.E.M. with the aim of authentically recreating the sound of the band. The performance includes songs from the first nine R.E.M. albums that will appeal to die-hard R.E.M. fans as well as those who only know the hits.
