Hey Doc!
My Monstera is looking very sad, I feel like I have tried everything to make it better! What's happened to it?
- Thanks, Jono
Hi Jono,

The leaf looks a bit sunburnt, possibly from direct sunlight through a window. The brown and yellow edges suggest a watering issue, both over and underwatering can look similar. Ensure the soil drains well and the plant isn't left sitting in water. Check near the drainage holes in the pot: if it's dry, it's time for water!
Plant Doctor!
Something is eating my Bok Choy, what should I do?
- Thanks, Debra
Hi Debra,
The holes look like caterpillar damage, while the discoloured area near the rib suggests leaf miner. For general caterpillars, an organic spray like Bugtrol works well. Leaf miners are harder to treat with sprays, so removing the affected leaves would be the best solution for that.

At Kings, we’re proud to support community groups who are on a mission to make their neighbourhoods greener.
Everybody Eats is a charity-driven social enterprise with a simple kaupapa: to use food as a tool for bringing people together
What began as a one-night-a-week pop-up has grown into a pioneering social dining movement. Today, we have three full-time restaurants across Te Ika-a-Māui (the North Island), serving thousands of restaurant-quality, three-course meals each month on a pay-what-you-can basis.
Our talented chefs transform rescued, surplus, and donated ingredients into fresh, ever-changing menus each night - supported by an incredible community of volunteers. Our restaurants are warm, inclusive spaces where everyone is welcome to enjoy a nourishing meal, connect with others, and be part of something bigger.
Thanks to the generous support of Kings Plant Barn, our chefs in Auckland have access to home-grown herbs - bringing flavour, flair, and big smiles to our Onehunga and Glen Innes kitchen teams.
The best way to support our kaupapa is to come and dine with us. Every meal makes a difference. Book online or simply come by between 6pm–8pm, Sunday to Thursday.

Eighteen months ago, Edmonton Primary School had a vision to turn an empty grass area into a vegetable garden for the children.
Principal Margaret Samson says “our goal was to create a positive interactive teaching space. There is just so much to learn from gardening and tending plants, this offers unlimited teaching potential”.
Created with a lot of community support, (including Kings Plant Barn), the new garden area is now an all-seasons garden space the school can be proud of and provides a broad range of interactive learning opportunities.
“Gardening and raising plants is a new experience for many of our tamariki. It’s wonderful to see them outside and engaged and interested in all the different aspects of growing healthy plants.” says Principal Samson.

The team at Kings are plant people — passionate and enthusiastic about caring for plants. Get to know a few of our team, and the story of how their love for plants came about. With their expertise and passion, they’re here to help you grow well.

Aaron St Lukes Garden Centre Supervisor
Seven years ago, I decided to stop living for the weekends and pursue something I truly lovegardening. I’ve always noticed plants wherever I go, so taking a summer job at Kings St Lukes felt natural. Seven years later, I’m still here, doing what I love every day.
I grew up in rural Ireland, where life outdoors was second nature - from farm chores to veggie gardens. Most of my knowledge comes from hands-on experience, curiosity, and a love of learning. Gardening, to me, is about tuning into your surroundings and enjoying the process.
When I moved to the city, I stayed connected through community gardens and creating a lush indoor jungle. Now, with my own outdoor space, I’m exploring garden design - an exciting new chapter.
What I love most about Kings is that it never feels like “work.” I get to share my passion, connect with others, and help build their confidence along the way.
Christine Henderson Assistant Manager
I grew up on a farm in Kaitaia, where we had a one-acre vegetable garden and grew all our own fruit. Back then, gardening felt more like a chore than a passion - until a friend later reignited my interest!
Before joining Kings, I spent time volunteering with various community initiatives, including running a community garden. That experience deepened my love for growing and sharing knowledge.
I’ve now been part of the Kings team for 10 years, and I still learn something new every day. I love working outdoors, being surrounded by nature, and helping others grow their own gardens.
One of the best parts of my role is connecting with our customers, they have so much knowledge and enthusiasm, and I’m always learning from them. At the same time, I get to help inspire new gardeners and support their growing journeys.

If you’re growing petunias in pots, use Kings Container Mix as this has the perfect blend of water-storing crystals and wetting agents to keep your plants hydrated and happy!
Petunias planted in the ground or in pots need a thorough watering 2 to 3 times a week, however hanging baskets will require daily watering. Water them slowly allowing the water to sink down to the roots!
When planted into the ground make sure to liquid feed them every month with Aquaticus Garden Booster, from spring through to the end of autumn
as this will encourage root growth and increase microbial activity in the soil. The only pruning required is to remove old flowers (deadhead) as this will encourage repeat flowering.

As Spring breathes new life into your garden, giving your plants the right nutrients is essential. But with so many fertiliser options available, how do you choose between granular, slow-release, and liquid?
Granular Fertiliser
Granular fertilisers are a favourite for many gardeners. They're easy to apply, release nutrients slowly over time, and are great for seasonal feeding. Ideal for borders, lawns and established beds, they work gradually as you water or when it rains, making them a low-maintenance option.
Slow-Release Fertiliser
Slow-release fertilisers offer a convenient, long-lasting option for gardeners who want consistent nutrition without frequent reapplication. They’re designed to release nutrients over an extended period of time, perfect for busy gardeners or those looking to maintain strong, healthy growth with minimal fuss.
Liquid Fertiliser
Liquid fertilisers, on the other hand, offer fast results. Because they're absorbed quickly by plants, they’re perfect for a quick boost or when your plants are showing signs of nutrient deficiency.
So, Which Fertiliser is Best?
If your plants need a quick boost, liquid fertiliser is the way to go as it works fast and can be used on everything from garden beds to pots and containers. For a longer-lasting effect in potted plants, slow-release fertilisers are ideal, gradually feeding over time. Granular fertilisers are best reserved for garden use, where they provide essential nutrients for seasonal feeding.
Still unsure? Pop into your local Kings and we’ll help you choose the perfect fertiliser for your garden.

The only thing more satisfying than growing your own food is growing it organically! Not only are you nourishing your body with chemical-free goodness, but you're also supporting a healthier planet! Whether you’re new to gardening or refining your gardening skills, here’s your quick guide to growing an abundant organic garden.

Start with the Soil
Healthy soil is the foundation of any successful organic garden. In just one teaspoon of nutrient-rich earth, you’ll find billions of beneficial bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms working in harmony to feed your plants, retain moisture, and ward off disease. Enrich your soil by adding organic matter such as Kings Compost and Kings Sheep Pellets, which will provide more food for your plants and the beneficial microbes beneath!
Worm Farm
Transform your kitchen scraps into black gold! Worm farms produce vermicast, a nutrient-
dense soil conditioner and liquid fertiliser that’s ideal for feeding fruits and veggies.
To use as a liquid feed, dilute the worm tea at a 1:10 ratio with water and apply it around the base of your plants. For a soil nutrient boost, gently fork the vermicast solids into your garden beds.
Fungal Friends: Trichoderma
Beneficial fungi like Trichoderma can do wonders for plant health. Found in products like Aquaticus Garden Booster, Trichoderma colonises root zones, enhances growth, and protects against root rot and other soil-borne diseases.
Thirsty Plants and Mulch
Keep your garden hydrated and protected with consistent watering and a layer of mulch. Mulch not only locks in the moisture, but also nurtures the microbial life in the soil. Make sure to maintain a gap of at least 7cm between the mulch and tree trunk to prevent moisture buildup and potential rot issues.
A strong organic garden is your best defence against pests. Prevention goes a long way, and a few smart strategies will keep the bugs at bay without harming the environment. With the right care, your garden becomes a selfsustaining ecosystem that naturally resists infestations.
As a protective measure, use bug netting over vulnerable crops and plant insect-attracting companions like borage, echinacea and hyssop. Consider sacrificial crops to lure pests away.
Some organic sprays include Aquaticus Bugtrol and Grosafe Bioneem.
Fresh compost filled with beneficial microbes is another way to give your garden a boost. If you’ve got the space, place your compost bin directly on your garden beds, nature will do the rest!
Small space? Try a bokashi bin under the sink. When combined with Bokashi Zing Compost, this method breaks down food waste quickly and produces a potent liquid fertiliser.
Weeding might not be glamorous, but it’s essential for an organic garden. Frequent removal keeps competition down and your crops thriving.
Using a Niwashi Grubber or Traditional Garden Tool can be helpful to remove unwanted weeds.
For stubborn patches, opt for an organic solution like Nature's Way Weedkiller, which uses natural fatty acids to break down weeds safely.
Gardening organically is about more than growing, it’s about nurturing. With a bit of care, knowledge, and nature-friendly tools, you’ll create a garden that’s as sustainable as it is satisfying.

Organic fertilisers don’t just feed your plants, they improve the entire soil ecosystem. Over time, this creates a self-sustaining garden that thrives with less intervention.

Spring has arrived, and that means it's prime time to sow and grow tomatoes for a juicy home-grown harvest. Whether planted in garden beds, pots, or containers, tomato plants will reward you with their vibrant and juicy fruit. Follow this guide to ensure a bountiful crop!

Growing From Seed
If you want to explore unique varieties of tomatoes, growing from seed is a great option! Auckland's warm climate allows for seed sowing from mid August, starting in seed trays.
Growing From Seedlings
For a quicker start, try tomato seedlings! Our Super Punnets have individual pockets which ensure their roots won’t get tangled, setting your tomatoes up for fast growth.
Growing From Established Plants
Need a headstart, or playing catch up? Available from mid September, mature plants establish quickly, producing a bountiful harvest to get you snacking on them sooner.
Growing from Grafted Tomatoes
Wanting double the tomatoes? Grafted tomatoes are a great option as they grow faster, are more resilient, and can produce up to twice as much fruit as standard varieties.
Position
Tomatoes need as much sun as possible! Find a warm sunny spot in your garden that gets at least 6-8 hours of sun a day, preferably somewhere sheltered from strong winds but with good airflow. Make sure to rotate your crop placement each year, avoiding areas where tomatoes, potatoes or eggplants grew the previous year to avoid soil-borne diseases.
When planting into containers, make sure to use a specialised Tui Tomato Mix or Living Earth Organic Veggie Mix as these mixes have water crystals for improved moisture retention, as well as slow-release fertiliser to help feed your plants. Make sure to choose your pot wisely to ensure healthy root development, at least a 40L pot for a mature plant.
When planting tomatoes directly into the ground, make sure your soil is free draining and rich in organic matter. To improve the organic content in your soil use a fork to break up the soil and mix in Kings Compost and Kings Sheep Pellets. Dig a hole twice as deep and wide as the pot your plant came in. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the graft is at least 1 cm above the soil line, backfill the hole with your soil blend. Firm the soil down gently and water in well with Aquaticus Organic Garden Booster. Provide a stake to tie your tomato plants to as they grow. Some tomato varieties can reach up to 6ft tall!

Tomatoes thrive with consistent watering and the right nutrients. If planted in the ground, water deeply every second day to encourage strong root development. For potted tomatoes, water daily until it drains from the bottom of the pot - but never let the pot sit in standing water, as this can lead to root rot.
Feeding is just as important. Once your tomato plant begins to flower, apply Kings Liquid Tomato Food every two weeks. This tomatospecific fertiliser is rich in potassium (or potash), which promotes abundant flowering and fruit production. Supplement with Aquaticus Garden Booster once a
month, this organic liquid fertiliser will help your plant develop stronger, healthier roots!
To help your tomato plant focus its energy on producing fruit and flowers, regularly remove side shoots - also known as lateral branches. These small shoots appear in the junction between the main stem and existing branches and can divert valuable nutrients from fruit development. Harvest your tomatoes once they’ve fully ripened on the vine. Depending on the variety, they’ll turn a rich red, golden yellow, or vibrant orange when ready to pick.
Keep your tomato plants healthy by staying ahead of common pests and diseases. To combat blight, spray regularly with Grosafe Free Flo Copper, and use Yates Nature’s Way Fungus Spray to control powdery mildew. For protection against insect pests, apply Yates Success Ultra.
Whatever product you choose, always read and follow the label instructions carefully to ensure safe and effective use. It's best to apply sprays in the evening hours to avoid harming beneficial insects.

These tomatoes are large, juicy, and meaty with a mild, classic tomato flavour! They’re perfect for slicing onto burgers and sandwiches. Their thick flesh and minimal seeds make them a favourite for fresh eating and summer salads.

Roma Roma tomatoes are plum-shaped, meaty, and low in moisture, making them ideal for sauces, pastes, and canning. With their rich, tangy flavour and few seeds, they’re a staple in Italian cooking and a favourite for preserving.

These small, cherry-sized tomatoes are known for their exceptionally sweet flavour and prolific yields. These bite-sized treats grow in long clusters and are perfect for snacking, salads, or roasting.

Black Krim tomatoes are striking heirlooms with deep reddish-purple skin and rich, smoky-sweet flavour. Known for their juicy texture and complex taste, they’re a gourmet favourite—perfect for salads, sandwiches, and fresh slicing.

A classic, reliable heirloom variety known for their smooth, medium-sized fruits and balanced flavour. Vigorous and highyielding, they thrive in a variety of conditions, making them a favourite among home gardeners and market growers alike.

A great organic fertiliser for all plants, trees and shrubs, helping to improve soil structure.
Spring has sprung, bringing warmer weather, longer days, and a garden bursting into bloom - perfect conditions for planting with pollinators in mind.
As bees emerge from their winter hibernation, they are actively seeking food sources to nourish themselves and their colonies. Although the weather can still be a bit unpredictable, now is an ideal time to dedicate a section of your garden to bee-friendly plants. These spring flowers provide
essential pollen and nectar just when bees need it most, and as summer approaches, your garden will continue to support them as they transition to the next wave of blossoms.

With spring in full swing, your indoor jungle is ready to wake up and grow! As days get longer and the sun shines warmer, your houseplants will respond with fresh shoots and vibrant energy. Now’s the time to tweak your care routine - and maybe even give some plants a new place to thrive!

More sunshine means more opportunities for your plants to soak up what they love - but be careful! Bright, indirect light is ideal for most indoor varieties. Too much direct sun can scorch leaves, while too little can stunt growth. Every plant has its own lighting preferences, so take a moment to research your specific greenery before rearranging your space.
As temperatures rise, your plants will naturally get thirstier. Check the soil before watering, poke your finger in or use a moisture meter to see what’s going on below the surface. If it feels like it’s just starting to dry out, it’s time for a drink. Keep an eye out for signs of overwatering like yellowing leaves or soggy soil, roots need room to breathe too!
Now that your plants are actively growing, they’ll need extra nutrients to stay strong. Feed them every 4–6 weeks with a liquid fertiliser like Kings House Plant Fast Food for a quick nutrient boost. Prefer a low-maintenance option? Try Kings Slow Release House Plant Food once in spring and again in summer to keep plants nourished for the long haul.

If your plant’s growth has slowed, roots are poking out the drainage holes, or the soil dries out too fast after watering, it might be time for a bigger pot. That said, don’t rush to repot every new plant — many, like Peace Lilies, Moth Orchids and Anthuriums, prefer a snug home.
When it’s time to repot, go up just one pot size (about 5cm wider). Start with a base of Kings House Plant Mix, then gently remove your plant from its old container. If the roots are tightly packed, a rinse with water can help loosen them. Replant, leaving 3–4cm between the soil and pot rim. Fill around the roots with fresh mix, keeping the stem at its original height. Water thoroughly to settle everything in — and wait a month before feeding again.
Spring is the perfect time to reconnect with your indoor plants and support their seasonal comeback. A little care goes a long way in keeping them lush and lively all year round!

Specially formulated for indoor plants. It also contains slow-release fertiliser that will last up to six months.

Exotic and dramatic, Gloriosa lilies are a true spectacle. With curling, flame-like petals in fiery reds, oranges, and yellows, they seem to dance in mid-air. Their climbing vines and slender stems lend an air of wild elegance.

Hymenocallis unfolds like a star in bloom. Its delicate white petals and long, ribbon-like filaments create a lacy silhouette with a soft, sweet fragrance brings an air of quiet elegance to gardens and waterside beds alike.
For the best results, plant summer bulbs in spring or autumn, depending on the variety. Keep an eye on when they’re available in stores, as that is your cue to get planting! Summer flowering bulbs grow well in full sun regardless if they are in the ground or in pots.
In Ground
Fork the soil to loosen it up, adding in Gypsum ClayBreaker and Kings Potting Mix if needed. If the area tends to get very wet plant the bulbs into a slight mound to keep them growing well.
In Pots or Containers
Make sure there is enough space for the bulbs to grow. Opt for Tui Bulb Mix or Kings Potting Mix for planting.
Depth and spacing: Follow package instructions, but a good rule is to plant bulbs 2–3 times as deep as the bulb is tall.
Orientation: Pointy side up! Most bulbs have a clear top and bottom.

Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil and kick-start root growth.

Watering
Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering - bulbs hate soggy roots, this could also lead to the bulbs rotting.
Feeding
Every three months give your bulbs a side-dressing of Kings Bulb Food to boost flower bud development. Monthly applications of Aquaticus Organic Garden Booster will promote a strong and healthy root system.
Deadheading
Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
Staking
Support taller varieties like Dahlias and Gladioli to prevent wind damage.
With just a little planning and care, summer bulbs can bring months of joy, colour, and fragrance to your garden. So grab your trowel, pick your favourites, and let the summer bloom in full glory!

Choose a sunny, well-draining spot in your garden. Raised beds, large pots, or planter boxes all work beautifully. Most cocktail herbs are low-maintenance and grow well together, making them perfect for patios, balconies, or even windowsills.
To ensure your herbs flourish, it's important to provide the right care and conditions. Most herbs thrive when they receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, so be sure to place them in a sunny spot - whether that's a garden bed, windowsill, or balcony.
Consistent watering is also key. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist, particularly if you're growing herbs in containers, as they tend to dry out more quickly than garden beds. Lastly, don't hesitate to harvest your herbs often.
Regular picking not only gives you a steady supply of fresh flavours but also encourages the plants to produce more lush, healthy growth - benefiting both your kitchen and your garden.

Mint
The star of many cocktails, mint is a must-have. Used in mojitos, juleps, or muddled into lemonade. Grow it in a pot to prevent spreading.

Lemon Balm

Pineapple Sage

Rosemary
These woody herbs infuse beautifully into simple syrups or can be used as stirring sticks for earthy undertones.

Basil
Not just for pesto! Try lemon or Thai basil in gin cocktails for a citrusy kick.
